In the Penrose process and the Blandford-Znajek mechanism, the rotational energy of a black hole (BH) is extracted via particle fission and magnetic tension, respectively. Recently, inspired by a fundamental trait in plasma astrophysics known as magnetic reconnection (MR), a new energy extraction mechanism based on the fast reconnection of the magnetic field lines inside the ergosphere has been proposed by Comisso and Asenjo. In this paper, we investigate energy extraction caused by MR in the ergosphere of a rapidly spinning BH with broken Lorentz symmetry by a background bumblebee vector field. The desired rotating BH solution differentiates from the standard Kerr BH via the Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) parameter $l$, which comes from nonminimal coupling between the bumblebee field with nonzero vacuum expectation value and gravity. We find that incorporating $l<0$ in the background is in the interest of the energy extraction via MR for the fast-spinning BH surrounded by the plasma with weak magnetization, below what is expected from the scenario by Comisso and Asenjo. Our analysis robustly indicates that the power of energy extraction and efficiency of the plasma energization process through fast MR is more efficient than the Comisso-Asenjo solution, provided that the LSB parameter is negative, $l<0$. Compared to the Blandford-Znajek mechanism arising from the underlying background, we also show that MR is a more efficient energy extraction mechanism if $l<0$.
Recent study shows that the magnetic reconnection can serve as an efficient mechanism to extract energy from rapidly spinning black holes. In this paper, we consider the effects of the tidal charge on the energy extraction via the magnetic reconnection in the backgrounds of a spinning braneworld black hole. With the increase of the tidal charge, we find that both the energies of the accelerated plasma and decelerated plasma decrease for the observer located at infinity. To achieve the purpose extracting the net energy from the black hole, the decelerated plasma should take negative energy. The…
Black holes can accumulate a large amount of energy, responsible for highly energetic astrophysical phenomena Recently, fast magnetic reconnection (MR) of the magnetic field was proposed as a new way to extract energy and in this paper, we investigate this phenomena in a bumblebee Kerr-Sen BH. We find that the presence of the charge parameter strongly changes the simple Kerr case, making this extraction mechanism possible even for not extremely rotating black holes ($a \sim 0.7$). We also show that, under appropriate circumstances, MR is more efficient compared to the Blandford-Znajek mechanis…
We present the results of two-dimensional and three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical numerical simulations of relativistic magnetic reconnection, with particular emphasis on the dynamics of the plasma in a Petschek-type configuration with high Lundquist numbers, S\sim 10^5-10^8. The numerical scheme adopted, allowing for unprecedented accuracy for this type of calculations, is based on high order finite volume and discontinuous Galerkin methods as recently proposed by \citet{Dumbser2009}. The possibility of producing high Lorentz factors is discussed, showing that Lorentz factors close to \si…
We present the results of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical numerical simulations of relativistic magnetic reconnection, with particular emphasis on the dynamics of Petschek-type configurations with high Lundquist numbers, S ~ 10^5-10^8. The numerical scheme adopted, allowing for unprecedented accuracy for this type of calculations, is based on high order finite volume and discontinuous Galerkin methods as recently proposed by Dumbser & Zanotti (2009). The possibility of producing high Lorentz factors is discussed, by studying the effects produced on the dynamics by different magnetization…
We consider the evolution of a cosmic string loop that is captured by a much more massive and compact black hole. We show that after several reconnections that produce ejections of smaller loops, the loop that remains bound to the black hole moves on a nearly-periodic non-self-intersecting trajectory, "the orbit". The orbit evolves due to an energy and angular momentum exchange between the loop and the spinning black hole. We show that such evolution is mathematically equivalent to a certain continuous deformation of an auxiliary closed curve in a 3-dimensional space; for zero black-hole spin …
It has been recently shown that magnetic reconnection can provide us a novel mechanism to extract black hole rotational energy from a Kerr black holes. In this paper, we study the energy extraction from the Kerr-de Sitter black hole via this magnetic reconnection process. The result shows that, with the increase of the cosmological constant, a slowly spinning Kerr-de Sitter black hole can implement the energy extraction better than its Kerr counterpart. Interestingly, although the numerical results show that the maximum values of the power and efficiency slightly decrease with the cosmological…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations in Kerr's background are considered. The region of existence of highly relativistic planar circular orbits of a spinning particle in this background and dependence of the particle's Lorentz $γ$-factor on its spin and radial coordinate are investigated. It is shown that in contrast to the highly relativistic circular orbits of a spinless particle the corresponding orbits of a spinning particle are allowed in much wider space region. Some of these orbits show the significant attractive action of the spin-gravity coupling on a particle and others are caused by t…
The gravitational and electromagnetic fields of a moving charged spinning point particle are obtained in the Lorentz covariant form by transforming the Kerr--Newman solution in Boyer--Lindquist coordinates to the one in the coordinate system which resembles the isotropic coordinates and then covariantizing it. It is shown that the general relativistic proper time at the location of the particle is the same as the special relativistic one and the gravitational and electromagnetic self forces vanish.
In this paper we consider the massive scalar perturbation on the top of a small spinning-like black hole in context of Einstein-bumblebee modified gravity in order to probe the role of spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking on the superradiance scattering and corresponding instability. We show that at the low-frequency limit of the scalar wave the superradiance scattering will be enhanced with the Lorentz-violating parameter $α<0$ and will be weakened with $α>0$. Moreover, by addressing the black hole bomb issue, we extract an improved bound in the instability regime indicating that $α<0$ incre…
The recently constructed Hamiltonians for spinless binary black holes through third post-Newtonian order and for spinning ones through formal second post-Newtonian order, where the spins are counted of zero post-Newtonian order, are transformed into fully canonical center-of-mass and rest-frame variables. The mixture terms in the Hamiltonians between center-of-mass and rest-frame variables are in accordance with the relation between the total linear momentum and the center-of-mass velocity as demanded by global Lorentz invariance. The various generating functions for the center-of-mass and res…
Spinning black holes store rotational energy that can be extracted. When a black hole is immersed in an externally supplied magnetic field, reconnection of magnetic field lines within the ergosphere can generate negative energy (relative to infinity) particles that fall into the black hole event horizon while other particles escape stealing energy from the black hole. We show analytically that energy extraction via magnetic reconnection is possible when the black hole spin is high (dimensionless spin $a\sim1$) and the plasma is strongly magnetized (plasma magnetization $σ_0>1/3$). The paramete…
Einstein-aether theory is extended by allowing for spinning degrees of freedom of the aether. In addition to the acceleration, shear, expansion, and vorticity of the aether velocity field, a spin rotation describing the dynamics of a classical intrinsic angular momentum of the aether is introduced as a kinematic quantity. The action of Einstein-aether theory is augmented by a term quadratic in the spin rotation and by coupling terms with the vorticity and the acceleration. Besides breaking the Lorentz boost invariance, the theory breaks the invariance under spatial rotations in the direction o…

In this paper, we discuss the gravitational field of ultrarelativistic extended spinning objects. For this purpose, we use a solution of the linearized gravitational equations obtained in the frame where such an object is translationally at rest, and boost this solution close to the speed of light. In order to obtain a regular limiting metric for non-spinning matter, it is sufficient to keep the energy of the boosted body fixed. This process is known as the Penrose limit. We demonstrate that in the presence of rotation, an additional rescaling is required for the angular momentum density compo…
When the equatorial spin velocity, $v$, of a charged conducting sphere approaches $c$, the Lorentz force causes a remarkable rearrangement of the total charge $q$. Charge of that sign is confined to a narrow equatorial belt at latitudes $b \leqslant \sqrt{3} (1 - v^2/c^2)^{1/2}$ while charge of the opposite sign occupies most of the sphere's surface. The change in field structure is shown to be a growing contribution of the `magic' electromagnetic field of the charged Kerr-Newman black hole with Newton's G set to zero. The total charge within the narrow equatorial belt grows as $(1-v^2/c^2)^{-…

[Abridged] Electromagnetic emission can be produced as a precursor to the merger, as a prompt emission during the collapse of a NS and at the spin-down stage of the resulting BH. We demonstrate that the time evolution of the axisymmetric force-free magnetic fields can be expressed in terms of the hyperbolic Grad-Shafranov equation. We find exact non-linear time-dependent split-monopole structure of magnetosphere driven by spinning and collapsing NS in Schwarzschild geometry. Based on this solution, we argue that the collapse of a NS into the BH happens smoothly, without natural formation of cu…
