The use of atomically sized quantum systems as highly sensitive measuring devices represents an exciting and quickly growing research field. Here, we explore the properties of a quasiparticle formed by a mobile impurity interacting with a two-dimensional fermionic superfluid. The energy of the quasiparticle is shown to be lowered by superfluid pairing as this increases the compressibility of the Fermi gas, thereby making it easier for the impurity to perturb its surroundings. We demonstrate that the fundamentally discontinuous nature of the superfluid to normal phase transition of a two-dimensional system, leads to a rapid increase in the quasiparticle energy around the critical temperature. The magnitude of this increase exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior as a function of the pairing strength with a sizable maximum in the cross-over region, where the spatial extend of the Cooper pairs is comparable to the interparticle spacing.
Since the quasiparticle energy is measurable with present experimental techniques, our results illustrate how impurities entangled with their environment can serve as useful probes for non-trivial thermal and quantum correlations.
We consider bosonic atoms in an optical lattice at integer filling, tuned to the superfluid-Mott insulator critical point, and coupled to a single, mobile impurity atom of a different species. This setup is inspired by current experiments with quantum gas microscopes, which enable tracking of the impurity motion. We describe the evolution of the impurity motion from quantum wave packet spread at short times, to Brownian diffusion at long times. This dynamics is controlled by the interplay between dangerously irrelevant perturbations at the strongly-interacting field theory describing the super…
In this article we investigate the properties of an impurity immersed in a superfluid of strongly correlated spin 1/2 fermions. For resonant interactions, we first relate the stability diagram of dimer and trimer states to the three-body problem for an impurity interacting with a pair of fermions. Then we calculate the beyond-mean-field corrections to the energy of a weakly interacting impurity. We show that these corrections are divergent and have to be regularized by properly accounting for three-body physics in the problem.
In this article we study the interaction between an impurity and the gas of Bogoliubov excitations of a Fermi superfluid by mapping it on the polaron problem for an impurity in a BEC. The description of the Fermi superfluid across the BEC-BCS crossover regime is based on a recently developed effective field theory presented in [Eur. Phys. J. B 88, 122 (2015)] and provides us with the interaction-dependent dispersion relations for the Bogoliubov excitations. The behavior of the polaronic coupling constant $α$ and of the effective mass of the polaron is examined in a broad window of the BEC-BCS …
In this article we calculate the energy of an impurity weakly coupled to a spin 1/2 fermionic superfluid. We show that the divergences resulting from three-body physics can only be cured using a proper description of the excitations of the many-body background. We highlight the crucial role played by interactions between quasiparticles which are overlooked within BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) mean-field theory of fermionic superfluidity. By contrast, we prove that their addition using the Random Phase Approximation (RPA) allows us to regularize the energy of the impurity. Finally, we show th…
The role of impurities as experimental probes in the detection of quantum material properties is well appreciated. Here we study the effect of a single classical magnetic impurity in trapped ultracold Fermi superfluids. Depending on its shape and strength, a magnetic impurity can induce single or multiple mid-gap bound states in a superfluid Fermi gas. The multiple mid-gap states could coincide with the development of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase within the superfluid. As an analog of the Scanning Tunneling Microscope, we propose a modified RF spectroscopic method to measure…
We consider a localized impurity atom that interacts with a cloud of fermions in the paired state. We develop an effective scattering length description of the interaction between an impurity and a fermionic atom using their vacuum scattering length. Treating the pairing of fermions at the mean-field level, we show that the impurity atom acts like a magnetic impurity in the condensed matter context, and leads to the formation of a pair of Shiba bound states inside the superconducting gap. In addition, the impurity atom can lead to the formation of deeply bound states below the Fermi sea.
In this paper a Gaussian impurity moving through an equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate at T = 0 is studied. The problem can be described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is solved perturbatively. The analysis is done for systems of 2 and 3 spatial dimensions and generalises the work by [G.E. Astrakharchik and L.P. Pitaevskii, Phys. Rev. A 70, 013608 (2004)]. The Bogoliubov equation solutions for the condensate perturbed by a finite impurity are calculated in the co-moving frame, which are formally equivalent up to a dimension dependent form factor for general dimensions. From those solu…
We study polaron excitations induced by an impurity interacting with a two-dimensional $p+ip$ Fermi superfluid. As the Fermi-Fermi pairing interaction is tuned, the background Fermi superfluid undergoes a topological phase transition. We show that such a transition is accompanied by a discontinuity in the second derivative of the polaron energy, regardless of the impurity-fermion interaction. We also identify a polaron to trimer crossover when the Fermi superfluid is in the strongly interacting, thus topologically trivial, regime. However, the trimer state is metastable against the molecular s…
The existence of frictionless flow below a critical velocity for obstacles moving in a superfluid is well established in the context of the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii theory. We calculate the next order correction due to quantum and thermal fluctuations and find a non-zero force acting on a delta-function impurity moving through a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate at all subcritical velocities and at all temperatures. The force occurs due to an imbalance in the Doppler shifts of reflected quantum fluctuations from either side of the impurity. Our calculation is based on a consist…

We theoretically investigate the interplay between the fermionic mobile impurity atoms and a Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) superfluid in a two dimensional optical lattice. We find that the impurity atoms get localized and can form pairs when the interaction between the impurity atoms and the LO superfluid is strong enough. These features are due to the phenomena of self-localization whose underlying mechanism is revealed by an effective model. The impurity atoms with finite concentrations can drive the transition from a two-dimensional-checkerboard-like LO state to a quasi-one-dimensional-stripe-lik…
By means of linear stability analysis (LSA) and direct numerical simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii(GP)equations, we address the impurity induced modulational instability (MI) and the associated nonlinear dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We explore the dual role played by the impurities within the BECs -- the instigation of MI and the dissipation of the initially generated solitary waves. Because of the impurities, the repulsive BECs are even modulationally unstable and this tendency towards MI increases with increasing impurity fraction and superfluid-impurity coupling s…
We present a general and non-invasive probing scheme to perform full momentum-resolved spectroscopy of a cold atomic gas loaded into an optical lattice using a single quantum impurity. The protocol relies on weak collisional interactions and subsequent population measurements of the impurity. By tuning a few controllable external parameters the impurity-lattice interaction can be engineered, and using two sets of measurements, performed with the impurity in two different positions, the full dispersion relation of the superfluid phonons can be reliably extracted.
We investigate theoretically non-magnetic impurity scattering in a one-dimensional atomic topological superfluid in harmonic traps, by solving self-consistently the microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. In sharp contrast to topologically trivial Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer \textit{s}-wave superfluid, topological superfluid can host a mid-gap state that is bound to localized non-magnetic impurity. For strong impurity scattering, the bound state becomes universal, with nearly zero energy and a wave-function that closely follows the symmetry of that of Majorana fermions. We propose that the ob…
We investigate the effect exerted by spin-polarized fermions on the interaction between superfluid bosons for a Bose-Fermi mixture residing on an optical lattice, with particular emphasis on the possibility of an induced phase-separation. Using a set of microscopic parameters relevant to a $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb mixture, we show how the phase-separation criterion may be directly probed by means of the critical superfluid velocity of the bosonic condensate. We report quantitative results for the magnitude of the superfluid velocity and its dependence on the trap depth, the boson-fermion interaction…
We study an impurity atom trapped by an anharmonic potential, immersed within a cold atomic Fermi gas with attractive interactions that realizes the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Considering the qubit comprising the lowest two vibrational energy eigenstates of the impurity, we demonstrate that its dynamics probes the equilibrium density fluctuations encoded in the dynamic structure factor of the superfluid. Observing the impurity's evolution is thus shown to facilitate nondestructive measurements of the superfluid order paramet…
We develop a method to extract the dissipation for a heavy moving impurity immersed in superfluid Fermi gases. The drag force is derived analytically. As a reward, we are able to extract the dynamical structure factor, from which density excitations of the system is carefully examined. We show that dissipations through drag force is associated with two types of excitations, one being single-particle and the other being collective. We map out the critical velocity for dissipation across the BEC-BCS crossover, consistent with existing experiments. For a magnetic impurity, we show that the dissip…
We use variational methods to study a spin impurity in a 1D Bose lattice gas. Both in the strongly interacting superfluid regime and the Mott regime we find that the impurity binds with a hole, forming a polaron. Our calculations for the dispersion of the polaron are consistent with recent experiments by Fukuhara et. al. [Nature Phys. 9, 235 (2013)] and give a better understanding of their numerical simulations. We find that for sufficiently weak interactions there are ranges of momentum for which the polaron is unstable. We propose experimentally studying the stability of the polaron by measu…
We report direct evidence of superfluidity in a quasi two-dimensional Bose gas by observing its dynamical response to a collective excitation. Relying on a novel local correlation analysis, we are able to probe inhomogeneous clouds and reveal their local dynamics. We identify in this way the superfluid and thermal phases inside the gas and locate the boundary at which the Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless crossover occurs. This new analysis also allows to evidence the coupling of the two fluids which induces at finite temperatures damping rates larger than the usual Landau damping.
We present a universal theory for the critical behavior of an impurity at the two-dimensional superfluid-Mott insulator transition. Our analysis is motivated by a numerical study of the Bose-Hubbard model with an impurity site by Huang et al. (Phys. Rev. B 94, 220502 (2016)), who found an impurity phase transition as a function of the trapping potential. The bulk theory is described by the $O(2)$ symmetric Wilson-Fisher conformal field theory, and we model the impurity by a localized spin-1/2 degree of freedom. We also consider a generalized model by considering an $O(N)$ symmetric bulk theory…
The experimental investigation of spontaneously created vortices is of utmost importance for the understanding of quantum phase transitions towards a superfluid phase, especially for two dimensional systems that are expected to be governed by the Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless physics. By means of time resolved near-field interferometry we track the path of such vortices, created at random locations in an exciton-polariton condensate under pulsed non-resonant excitation, to their final pinning positions imposed by the stationary disorder. We formulate a theoretical model that successfully repr…
We analyze the spin dynamics of an out-of-equilibrium large spin dipolar atomic Bose gas in an optical lattice. We observe a smooth crossover from a complex oscillatory behavior to an exponential behavior throughout the Mott to superfluid transition. While both of these regimes are well described by our theoretical models, we provide data in the intermediate regime where dipolar interactions, contact interactions, and super-exchange mechanisms compete. In this strongly correlated regime, spin dynamics and transport are coupled, which challenges theoretical models for quantum magnetism.
We theoretically investigate the critical behavior of second sound mode in a harmonically trapped ultracold atomic Fermi gas with resonant interactions. Near the superfluid phase transition with critical temperature $T_{c}$, the frequency or the sound velocity of second sound mode depends crucially on the critical exponent $β$ of superfluid fraction. In an isotropic harmonic trap, we predict that the mode frequency diverges like $(1-T/T_{c})^{β-1/2}$ when $β<1/2$. In a highly elongated trap, the speed of second sound reduces by a factor $1/\sqrt{2β+1}$ from that in a homogeneous three-dimensio…
We investigate the zero-temperature quasiparticle properties of a mobile impurity immersed in a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid at the crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid, by using a many-body $T$-matrix approach that excludes Efimov trimer bound states. Termed BEC-BCS crossover polaron, or crossover polaron in short, this quasiparticle couples to elementary excitations of a many-body background and therefore could provide a useful probe of the underlying strongly interacting Fermi superfluid. Due to the existence of a signifi…
We determine {à} la Landau the critical velocity $v\_c^{L}$ of a moving impurity in a Fermi superfluid, that is by restricting to the minimal excitation processes of the superfluid. $v\_c^{L}$ is then the minimal velocity at which these processes are energetically allowed. The Fermi superfluid actually exhibits two excitation branches~: one is the fermionic pair-breaking excitation, as predicted by BCS theory; the other one is bosonic and sets pairs into motion, as predicted by Anderson's RPA. $v\_c^{L}$ is the smallest of the two corresponding critical velocities $v\_{c,f}^{L}$ and $v\_{c,b}^…

In a cigar shaped Bose-Einstein condensate, explicit solutions of the coupled mean-field equations, describing defect-grey soliton dynamics are obtained, demonstrating the coexistence of grey soliton and a localized defect. Unlike the case of dark soliton, where the defect trapping center has vanishing superfluid density, the moving grey soliton necessarily possesses a finite superfluid component at the defect location. The wave vector of the impurity is controlled by the velocity of the grey soliton, which has an upper bound. It is found that the presence of the impurity lowers the speed of t…
We study a new type of Fermi polaron induced by an impurity interacting with an ultracold Fermi superfluid. Due to the three-component nature of the system, the polaron can become trimer-like with a non-universal energy spectrum. We identify multiple avoided crossings between impurity- and trimer-like solutions in both the attractive and the repulsive polaron spectra. In particular, the widths of avoided crossings gradually increase as the Fermi superfluid undergoes a crossover from the BCS side towards the BEC side, which suggests instabilities towards three-body losses. Such losses can be re…
We present a systematic investigation of the effects of "nonmagnetic" impurities on the $s$-wave BCS-BEC crossover in atomic Fermi gases within a pairing fluctuation theory. Both pairing and impurity scattering $T$-matrices are treated self-consistently at the same time. While the system is less sensitive to impurity scattering in the Born limit, for strong impurity scatterers, both the frequency and the gap function are highly renormalized, leading to significant suppression of the superfluid $T_c$, the order parameter and the superfluid density. We also find the formation of impurity bands a…
We study a system of periodic Bose condensed atoms coupled to cavity photons using the input-output formalism. We show that the cavity will either act as a through pass Lorentzian filter when the superfluid fraction of the condensate is minimum or completely reflect the input field when the superfluid fraction is maximum. We show that by monitoring the ratio between the transmitted field and the reflected field, one can estimate the superfluid fraction.
A magnetic impurity in a fermionic superfluid hosts bound quasiparticle states known as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. We argue here that, if the impurity is mobile (i.e., has a finite mass), the impurity and its bound YSR quasiparticle move together as a midgap molecule, which has an unusual "Mexican-hat" dispersion that is tunable via the fermion density. We map out the impurity dispersion, which consists of an "atomic" branch (in which the impurity is dressed by quasiparticle pairs) and a "molecular" branch (in which the impurity binds a quasiparticle). We discuss the experimental realizati…
We analyse asymptotically and numerically the motion around a single impurity and a network of impurities inserted in a two-dimensional superfluid. The criticality for the break down of superfluidity is shown to occur when it becomes energetically favourable to create a doublet - the limiting case between a vortex pair and a rarefaction pulse on the surface of the impurity. Depending on the characteristics of the potential representing the impurity different excitation scenarios are shown to exist for a single impurity as well as for a lattice of impurities. Depending on the lattice characteri…
We model the behavior of N classical impurity fields immersed in a larger Bose-Einstein condensate by N+1 coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations in 1, 2, and 3 space dimensions. We discuss the stability of the uniform miscible system and show the importance of surface tension for self localization of the impurity fields. We derive analytically the attractive tail of impurity-impurity interaction due to mediation by the underlying condensate. Assuming all impurity fields interact with the same strength, we explore the resulting phase diagram, which contains four phases: {\it I}) all fields are…
We examine theoretically the visualization of Majorana fermions in a two-dimensional trapped ultracold atomic Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling. By increasing an external Zeeman field, the trapped gas transits from non-topological to topological superfluid, via a mixed phase in which both types of superfluids coexist. We show that the zero-energy Majorana fermion, supported by the topological superfluid and localized at the vortex core, is clearly visible through (i) the core density and (ii) the local density of states, which are readily measurable in experiment. We present a realistic estim…

We present a variational calculation of the energy of an impurity immersed a double Fermi sea of non-interacting Fermions. We show that in the strong-coupling regime, the system undergoes a first order transition between polaronic and trimer states. Our result suggests that the smooth crossover predicted in previous literature for a superfluid background is the consequence of Cooper pairing and is absent in a normal system.
We probe the transition between superfluid and Bose glass phases using quantum quenches of disorder in an ultracold atomic lattice gas that realizes the disordered Bose-Hubbard model. Measurements of excitations generated by the quench exhibit threshold behavior in the disorder strength indicative of a phase transition. Ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations confirm that the appearance of excitations coincides with the equilibrium superfluid--Bose-glass phase boundary at different lattice potential depths. By varying the quench time, we demonstrate the disappearance of an adiabatic timescal…
We propose an experiment to directly probe the non-Abelian statistics of Majorana fermions by braiding them in an s-wave superfluid of ultracold atoms. We show different orders of braiding operations give orthogonal output states that can be distinguished through Raman spectroscopy. Realization of Majorana bound states in an s-wave superfluid requires strong spin-orbital coupling and a controllable Zeeman field in the perpendicular direction. We present a simple laser configuration to generate the artificial spin-orbital coupling and the required Zeeman field in the dark state subspace.
We consider magnetic impurities in a two dimensional superfluid Fermi gas in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. By using the methods of t-matrix and Green's function, we find spin-orbit coupling has some dramatic impacts on the effects of magnetic impurities. For the single impurity problem, the number of bound states localized around the magnetic impurity is doubled. For the finite concentration $n$ of impurities, the energy gap is reduced and the density of states in the gapless region is greatly modified.
We predict a universal mid-gap bound state in topological superfluids, induced by either non-magnetic or magnetic impurities in the strong scattering limit. This universal state is similar to the lowest-energy Caroli-de Gennes-Martricon bound state in a vortex core, but is bound to localized impurities. We argue that the observation of such a universal bound state can be a clear signature for identifying topological superfluids. We theoretically examine our argument for a spin-orbit coupled ultracold atomic Fermi gas trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential, by performing extensive self…
We investigate the periodic Anderson model with attractive interactions by means of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver, we study the competition between the superfluid state and the paramagnetic Kondo insulating state, and determine the phase diagram. At the chemical potential-induced phase transition from the Kondo insulating state to the superfluid state, a low-energy peak characteristic of the superfluid state appears inside the hybridization gap. We also address the effect of the confining potential in optical lattice systems by …
Quantum gases in optical lattices offer an opportunity to experimentally realize and explore condensed matter models in a clean, tunable system. We investigate the Bose-Hubbard model on a microscopic level using single atom-single lattice site imaging; our technique enables space- and time-resolved characterization of the number statistics across the superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition. Site-resolved probing of fluctuations provides us with a sensitive local thermometer, allows us to identify microscopic heterostructures of low entropy Mott domains, and enables us to measure loc…
We investigate the system of a heavy impurity embedded in a paired two-component Fermi gas at the crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid via an extension of the functional determinant approach (FDA). FDA is an exact numerical approach applied to study manifestations of Anderson\textquoteright s orthogonality catastrophe (OC) in the system of a static impurity immersed in an ideal Fermi gas. Here, we extend the FDA to a strongly correlated superfluid background described by a BCS mean-field wavefunction. In contrast to the ideal Fermi g…
We present the Ramsey response and radio-frequency spectroscopy of a heavy impurity immersed in an interacting Fermi superfluid, using exact functional determinant approach. We describe the Fermi superfluid through the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory and investigate the role of the pairing gap on quasiparticle properties revealed by the two spectroscopies. The energy cost for pair breaking prevents Anderson\textquoteright s orthogonality catastrophe that occurs in a non-interacting Fermi gas and allows the existence of polaron quasiparticles in the exactly solvable heavy impurity…
We investigate the long-range behavior of the induced Casimir interaction between two spinless heavy impurities, or polarons, in superfluid cold atomic gases. With the help of effective field theory (EFT) of a Galilean invariant superfluid, we show that the induced impurity-impurity potential at long distance universally shows a relativistic van der Waals-like attraction ($\sim 1/r^7$) resulting from the exchange of two superfluid phonons. We also clarify finite temperature effects from the same two-phonon exchange process. The temperature $T$ introduces the additional length scale $c_s/T$ wit…
We investigate the superfluid behavior of a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^6$Li molecules. In the experiment by Weimer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 095301 (2015) a condensate is stirred by a weak, red-detuned laser beam along a circular path around the trap center. The rate of induced heating increases steeply above a velocity $v_c$, which we define as the critical velocity. Below this velocity, the moving beam creates almost no heating. In this paper, we demonstrate a quantitative understanding of the critical velocity. Using both numerical and analytical methods, we identify the non-zero tem…
In this brief review, we report some new development in the functional determinant approach (FDA), an exact numerical method, in the studies of a heavy quantum impurity immersed in Fermi gases and manipulated with radio-frequency pulses. FDA has been successfully applied to investigate the universal dynamical responses of a heavy impurity in an ultracold ideal Fermi gas in both the time and frequency domain, which allows the exploration of the renowned Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe (OC). In such a system, OC is induced by the multiple particle-hole excitations of the Fermi sea, which is…
We study the notion of superfluid critical velocity in one spatial dimension. It is shown that for heavy impurities with mass $M$ exceeding a critical mass $M_\mathrm{c}$, the dispersion develops periodic metastable branches resulting in dramatic changes of dynamics in the presence of an external driving force. In contrast to smooth Bloch Oscillations for $M<M_\mathrm{c}$, a heavy impurity climbs metastable branches until it reaches a branch termination point or undergoes a random tunneling event, both leading to an abrupt change in velocity and an energy loss. This is predicted to lead to a n…
