We present a detailed study of the partial rest-optical ($λ_{\mathrm{obs}} \approx 3600-5600\,$Å) spectra of $N = 328$ star-forming galaxies at $0.6 < z < 1.0$ from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C). We compare this sample with low-redshift ($z \sim 0$) galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), intermediate-redshift ($z \sim 1.6$) galaxies from the Fiber Multi-Object Spectrograph (FMOS)-COSMOS Survey, and high-redshift ($z \sim 2$) galaxies from the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS). At a lookback time of $6-8\ \mathrm{Gyr}$, galaxies with stellar masses $\mathrm{log}(\mathrm{M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}}) > 10.25$ appear remarkably similar to $z \sim 0$ galaxies in terms of their nebular excitation, as measured using $\mathrm{[O\,III]}\lambda5008 / \mathrm{H}β$. There is some evidence that $0.6 < z < 1.0$ galaxies with lower $\mathrm{M_{\ast}}$ have higher $\mathrm{[O\,III]}\lambda5008 / \mathrm{H}β$ than $z \sim 0$ galaxies and are more similar to less evolved $z \sim 1.6$ and $z \sim 2$ galaxies, which are offset from the $z \sim 0$ locus at all $\mathrm{M_{\ast}}$. We explore the impact selection effects, contributions from active galactic nuclei, and variations in physical conditions (ionization parameter and gas-phase oxygen abundance) have on the apparent distribution of $\mathrm{[O\,III]}\lambda5008 / \mathrm{H}β$ and find somewhat higher ionization and lower enrichment in $0.6 < z < 1.0$ galaxies with lower $\mathrm{M_{\ast}}$ relative to $z \sim 0$ galaxies. We use new near-infrared spectroscopic observations of $N = 53$ LEGA-C galaxies to investigate other probes of enrichment and excitation. Our analysis demonstrates the importance of obtaining complete rest-optical spectra of galaxies in order to disentangle these effects.

We present the third and final data release of the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C), an ESO/VLT public spectroscopic survey targeting $0.6 < z < 1.0$, Ks-selected galaxies. The data release contains 3528 spectra with measured stellar velocity dispersions and stellar population properties, a 25-fold increase in sample size compared to previous work. This $K_s$-selected sample probes the galaxy population down to $\sim0.3 L^*$, for all colors and morphological types. Along with the spectra we publish a value-added catalog with stellar and ionized gas velocity dispersions, stellar …
We present the second data release of the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C), an ESO 130-night public spectroscopic survey conducted with VIMOS on the Very Large Telescope. We release 1988 spectra with typical continuum S / N ~= 20 /Angstrom of galaxies at 0.6 ~< z ~< 1.0, each observed for ~20 hours and fully reduced with a custom-built pipeline. We also release a catalog with spectroscopic redshifts, emission line fluxes, Lick/IDS indices, and observed stellar and gas velocity dispersions that are spatially integrated quantities including both rotational motions and genuine disp…
We introduce VLT-MUSE observations of the central 2$'\times2'$ (30$\times$30 pc) of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The observations provide an unprecedented spectroscopic census of the massive stars and ionised gas in the vicinity of R136, the young, dense star cluster located in NGC 2070, at the heart of the richest star-forming region in the Local Group. Spectrophotometry and radial-velocity estimates of the nebular gas (superimposed on the stellar spectra) are provided for 2255 point sources extracted from the MUSE datacubes, and we present estimates of stellar radial v…
We provide an overview of Science Verification MUSE observations of NGC 2070, the central region of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Integral-field spectroscopy of the central 2' x 2' region provides the first complete spectroscopic census of its massive star content, nebular conditions and kinematics. The star-formation surface density of NGC 2070 is reminiscent of the intense star-forming knots of high-redshift galaxies, with nebular conditions similar to low-redshift Green Pea galaxies, some of which are Lyman continuum leakers. Uniquely, MUSE permits the star-formation h…
Motivated by the observed differences in the nebular emission of nearby and high-redshift galaxies, we carry out a set of direct numerical simulations of turbulent astrophysical media exposed to a UV background. The simulations assume a metallicity of $Z/Z_{\odot}$=0.5 and explicitly track ionization, recombination, charge transfer, and ion-by-ion radiative cooling for several astrophysically important elements. Each model is run to a global steady state that depends on the ionization parameter $U$, and the one-dimensional turbulent velocity dispersion, $σ_{\rm 1D}$, and the turbulent driving …
We present the results of several collisional-radiative models describing optically-thin emissivities of the main lines in neutral helium formed by recombination, for a grid of electron temperatures and densities, typical of H II regions and Planetary Nebulae. Accurate emissivities are required for example to measure the helium abundance in nebulae and as a consequence its primordial value. We compare our results with those obtained by previous models, finding significant differences, well above the target accuracy of one percent. We discuss in some detail our chosen set of atomic rates and th…
We study the unresolved X-ray emission in three Local Group dwarf elliptical galaxies (NGC 147, NGC 185 and NGC 205) using XMM-Newton observations, which most likely originates from a collection of weak X-ray sources, mainly cataclysmic variables and coronally active binaries. Precise knowledge of this stellar X-ray emission is crucial not only for understanding the relevant stellar astrophysics but also for disentangling and quantifying the thermal emission from diffuse hot gas in nearby galaxies. We find that the integrated X-ray emissivities of the individual dwarf ellipticals agree well wit…

We use \Pab\ (1282~nm) observations from the Hubble Space Telescope ($\HST$) G141 grism to study the star-formation and dust attenuation properties of a sample of 29 low-redshift ($z < 0.287$) galaxies in the CANDELS Ly$α$ Emission at Reionization (CLEAR) survey. We first compare the nebular attenuation from $\Pab/\Ha$ with the stellar attenuation inferred from the spectral energy distribution, finding that the galaxies in our sample are consistent with an average ratio of the continuum attenuation to the nebular gas of 0.44, but with a large amount of excess scatter beyond the observational u…

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the nearby, massive, highly rotating hybrid galaxy UGC~12591, along with observations in UV to FIR bands. HST data in V, I, and H bands is used to disentangle the structural components. Surface photometry shows a dominance of the bulge over the disc with H-band B/D ratio of $69\%$. The spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting reveals an extremely low global star formation rate (SFR) of $\rm\sim0.1-0.2 M_\odot yr^{-1}$, exceptionally low for the galaxy's huge stellar mass of $\rm 1.6\times10^{11}M_\odot$, implying a strong quenching of i…
Medium-band Astrophysics with the Grism of NIRCam In Frontier fields (MAGNIF): Spectroscopic Census of H$α$ Luminosity Functions and Cosmic Star Formation at $z\sim 4.5$ and 6.3
In this work we investigate the nature of 50 overdensities from the catalogue of Froebrich, Scholz, and Raftery (FSR) projected towards the Galactic anticentre, in the sector 160° \leq \ell \leq 200°. The sample contains candidates with |b| \leq 20° classified by FSR as probable open cluster (OC) and labelled with quality flags 2 and 3. Our main purpose is to determine the nature of these OC candidates and the fraction of these objects that are unknown OCs, as well as to derive astrophysical parameters (age, reddening, distance, core and cluster radii) for the clusters and to investigate the r…
Nebular HeII$λ$4686Å~line emission is useful to unveil active galactic nuclei (AGN) residing in actively star-forming (SF) galaxies, typically missed by the standard BPT classification. Here we adopt the HeII diagnostic to identify hidden AGN in the Local Universe using for the first time spatially-resolved data from the Data Release 15 of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO survey (MaNGA DR15). By combining results from HeII and BPT diagnostics, we overall select 459 AGN host candidates ($\sim$10% in MaNGA DR15), out of which 27 are identified as AGN by the HeII diagram only. The HeII-only AGN…
The Galactic B[e] supergiant MWC 137 is surrounded by a large-scale optical nebula. To shed light on the physical conditions and kinematics of the nebula, we analyze the optical forbidden emission lines [NII] 6548,6583 and [SII] 6716,6731 in long-slit spectra taken with ALFOSC at the Nordic Optical Telescope. The radial velocities display a complex behavior but, in general, the northern nebular features are predominantly approaching while the southern ones are mostly receding. The electron density shows strong variations across the nebula with values spreading from about zero to ~800 cm$^{-3}$…
The thermodynamic structure of hot gas in galaxy clusters is sensitive to astrophysical processes and typically difficult to model with galaxy formation simulations. We explore the fraction of cool-core (CC) clusters in a large sample of $370$ clusters from IllustrisTNG, examining six common CC definitions. IllustrisTNG produces continuous CC criteria distributions, the extremes of which are classified as CC and non-cool-core (NCC), and the criteria are increasingly correlated for more massive clusters. At $z=0$, the CC fractions for $2$ criteria are in reasonable agreement with the observed f…
Massive stars and their stellar winds are important for a number of feedback processes. The mass lost in the stellar wind can help determine the end-point of the star as a NS or a BH. However, the impact of mass-loss on the post-Main Sequence evolutionary stage of massive stars is not well understood. Westerlund 1 is an ideal astrophysical laboratory in which to study massive stars and their winds in great detail over a large range of different evolutionary phases. Aims: We aim to study the radio emission from Westerlund 1, in order to measure radio fluxes from the population of massive stars,…
We investigate the origin of extragalactic continuum emission and its relation to the stellar population of a recently discovered peculiar z=3.344 Lyman alpha emitter. Based on an analysis of the broad-band colors and morphology we find further support for the idea that the underlying galaxy is being fed by a large-scale (L > 35 kpc) accretion stream. Archival HST images show small scale (~5 kpc) tentacular filaments converging near a hot-spot of star-formation, possibly fueled by gas falling in along the filaments. The spectral energy distribution of the tentacles is broadly compatible with e…
We present VLT/MUSE observations of NGC 2070, the dominant ionizing nebula of 30 Doradus in the LMC, plus HST/STIS spectroscopy of its central star cluster R136. Integral Field Spectroscopy (MUSE) and pseudo IFS (STIS) together provides a complete census of all massive stars within the central 30x30 parsec^2 of the Tarantula. We discuss the integrated far-UV spectrum of R136, of particular interest for UV studies of young extragalactic star clusters. Strong HeII 1640 emission at very early ages (1-2 Myr) from very massive stars cannot be reproduced by current population synthesis models, even …

Spitzer IRAC observations and stellar photometric catalogs are presented for the Massive Young Star-Forming Complex Study in the Infrared and X-ray (MYStIX). MYStIX is a multiwavelength census of young stellar members of twenty nearby (d < 4 kpc), Galactic, star-forming regions that contain at least one O star. All regions have data available from the Spitzer Space Telescope, consisting of GLIMPSE or other published catalogs for eleven regions and results of our own photometric analysis of archival data for the remaining nine regions. This paper seeks to construct deep and reliable catalogs of…
Symbiotic stars are interacting binary systems with the longest orbital periods. They are typically formed by a white dwarf, a red giant and a nebula. These objects are natural astrophysical laboratories for studying the evolution of binaries. Current estimates of the population of Milky Way symbiotic stars vary from 3000 up to 400000. However, the current census is less than 300. The Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey can obtain hundreds of thousands of stellar spectra per year, providing a good opportunity to search for new symbiotic stars. In this work…
We present the first direct spectroscopic measurement of the stellar velocity dispersion function (VDF) for massive quiescent and star-forming galaxies at $0.6 < z \leq 1.0$. For this analysis we use individual measurements of stellar velocity dispersion from high-S/N spectra from the public Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) survey. We report a remarkable stability of the VDF for both quiescent and star-forming galaxies within this redshift range, though we note the presence of weak evolution in the number densities of star-forming galaxies. We compare both VDFs with previous dir…
Massive, O and early B-type (OB) stars remain incompletely catalogued in the nearby Galaxy due to high extinction, bright visible and infrared nebular emission in H II regions, and high field star contamination. These difficulties are alleviated by restricting the search to stars with X-ray emission. Using the X-ray point sources from the Massive Young star-forming complex Study in Infrared and X-rays (MYStIX) survey of OB-dominated regions, we identify 98 MYStIX candidate OB (MOBc) stars by fitting their 1-8 micron spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with reddened stellar atmosphere models. …
Planetary nebulae (PNe) provide tests of stellar evolution, can serve as tracers of chemical evolution in the Milky Way and other galaxies, and are also used as a calibrator of the cosmological distance ladder. Current and upcoming large scale photometric surveys have the potential to complete the census of PNe in our galaxy and beyond, but it is a challenge to disambiguate partially or fully unresolved PNe from the myriad other sources observed in these surveys. Here we carry out synthetic observations of nebular models to determine $ugrizy$ color-color spaces that can successfully identify P…

We present the completed KMOS$^\mathrm{3D}$ survey $-$ an integral field spectroscopic survey of 739, $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})>9$, galaxies at $0.6<z<2.7$ using the K-band Multi Object Spectrograph (KMOS) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). KMOS$^\mathrm{3D}$ provides a population-wide census of kinematics, star formation, outflows, and nebular gas conditions both on and off the star-forming galaxy main sequence through the spatially resolved and integrated properties of H$α$, [N II], and [S II] emission lines. We detect H$α$ emission for 91% of galaxies on the main sequence of star-formation…
We compute synthetic, rest-frame optical and ultraviolet (UV) emission-line properties of galaxy populations at redshifts from z$\approx$0 to z=8 in a full cosmological framework. We achieve this by coupling, in post-processing, the cosmological IllustrisTNG simulations with new-generation nebular-emission models, accounting for line emission from young stars, post-asymptotic-giant-branch (PAGB) stars, accreting black holes (BHs) and, for the first time, fast radiative shocks. The optical emission-line properties of simulated galaxies dominated by different ionizing sources are largely consist…
We use the Fundamental Plane (FP) to measure the redshift evolution of the dynamical mass-to-light ratio ($M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/L$) and the dynamical-to-stellar mass ratio ($M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/M_*$). Although conventionally used to study the properties of early-type galaxies, we here obtain stellar kinematic measurements from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) Survey for a sample of $\sim1400$ massive ($\log( M_*/M_\odot) >10.5$) galaxies at $0.6<z<1.0$ that span a wide range in star formation activity. In line with previous studies, we find a strong evolution in $M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/L…
Star formation occurs on physical scales corresponding to individual star forming regions, typically of order ~100 parsecs in size, but current observational facilities cannot resolve these scales within field galaxies beyond the local universe. However, the magnification from strong gravitational lensing allows us to measure the properties of these discrete star forming regions within galaxies in the distant universe. New results from multi-wavelength spectroscopic studies of a sample of extremely bright, highly magnified lensed galaxies are revealing the complexity of star formation on sub-g…
We explore the connection between the kinematics, structures and stellar populations of massive galaxies at $0.6<z<1.0$ using the Fundamental Plane (FP). Combining stellar kinematic data from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) survey with structural parameters measured from deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we obtain a sample of 1419 massive ($\log(M_*/M_\odot) >10.5$) galaxies that span a wide range in morphology, star formation activity and environment, and therefore is representative of the massive galaxy population at $z\sim0.8$. We find that quiescent and star-forming …
Mid- and far-infrared (IR) photometric and spectroscopic observations are fundamental to a full understanding of the dust-obscured Universe and the evolution of both star formation and black hole accretion in galaxies. In this work, using the specifications of the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) as a baseline, we investigate the capability to study the dust-obscured Universe of mid- and far-IR photometry at 34 and 70 $μ$m and low-resolution spectroscopy at 17-36 $μ$m using the state-of-the-art Spectro-Photometric Realisations of Infrared-selected Targets at all-…
A decade of study has established that the molecular gas properties of star-forming galaxies follow coherent scaling relations out to z~3, suggesting remarkable regularity of the interplay between molecular gas, star formation, and stellar growth. Passive galaxies, however, are expected to be gas-poor and therefore faint, and thus little is known about molecular gas in passive galaxies beyond the local universe. Here we present deep Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO(2-1) emission in 8 massive (Mstar ~ 10^11 Msol) galaxies at z~0.7 selected to lie a factor o…
In this letter, we investigate the impact of environment on integrated and spatially-resolved stellar kinematics of a sample of massive, quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshift ($0.6<z<1.0$). For this analysis, we combine photometric and spectroscopic parameters from the UltraVISTA and Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) surveys in the COSMOS field and environmental measurements. We analyze the trends with overdensity (1+$δ$) on the rotational support of quiescent galaxies and find no universal trends at either fixed mass or fixed stellar velocity dispersion. This is consistent…
We present a comparison of the observed, spatially integrated stellar and ionized gas velocity dispersions of $\sim1000$ massive ($\log M_{\star}/M_{\odot}\gtrsim\,10.3$) galaxies in the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) survey at $0.6\lesssim\,z\lesssim1.0$. The high $S/N\sim20{\rmÅ^{-1}}$ afforded by 20 hour VLT/VIMOS spectra allows for joint modeling of the stellar continuum and emission lines in all galaxies, spanning the full range of galaxy colors and morphologies. These observed integrated velocity dispersions (denoted as $σ'_{g, int}$ and $σ'_{\star, int}$) are related to…
We present stellar rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles for 104 quiescent galaxies at $z=0.6-1$ from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) spectroscopic survey. Rotation is typically probed across 10-20kpc, or to an average of 2.7${\rm R_e}$. Combined with central stellar velocity dispersions ($σ_0$) this provides the first determination of the dynamical state of a sample selected by a lack of star formation activity at large lookback time. The most massive galaxies ($M_{\star}>2\times10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$) generally show no or little rotation measured at 5kpc ($|V_5|/σ…

My thesis work aims to study the inter-relation between various physical and chemical conditions in a wide range of astrophysical environments. Our studied regions range from the super-hot regions (i.e., nebular, photon-dominated, or photodissociation regions, diffuse area, through which the lights of the background stars can reach us) to the super-cold regions (i.e., dense molecular clouds, proto-planetary disks, etc. where interstellar dust particles absorb all background visible and ultra-violet lights). The chemical complexity of the interstellar cloud gradually evolves due to the evolutio…
The Breakthrough Listen Initiative has embarked on a comprehensive SETI survey of nearby stars in the Milky Way that is vastly superior to previous efforts as measured by a wide range of different metrics. SETI surveys traditionally ignore the fact that they are sensitive to many background objects, in addition to the foreground target star. In order to better appreciate and exploit the presence of extragalactic objects in the field of view, the Aladin sky atlas and NED were employed to make a rudimentary census of extragalactic objects that were serendipitously observed with the 100-m Greenba…
How and when did galaxies form and assemble their stars and stellar mass? The answer to these questions, so crucial to astrophysics and cosmology, requires the full reconstruction of the so called cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD), i.e. the evolution of the average star formation rate per unit volume of the universe. While the SFRD has been reliably traced back to 10-11 billion years ago, its evolution is still poorly constrained at earlier cosmic epochs, and its estimate is mainly based on galaxies luminous in the ultraviolet and with low obscuration by dust. This limited knowledge is…
