For analytic negatively curved Riemannian manifold with analytic strictly convex boundary, we show that the scattering map for the geodesic flow determines the manifold up to isometry. In particular one recovers both the topology and the metric. More generally, our result holds in the analytic category under the no conjugate point and hyperbolic trapped sets assumptions.
We prove that if two non-trapping obstacles in $\mathbb{R}^n$ satisfy some rather weak non-degeneracy conditions and the scattering rays in their exteriors have (almost) the same travelling times or (almost) the same scattering length spectrum, then they coincide.
It was proved in \cite{NS1} that obstacles $K$ in $\R^d$ that are finite disjoint unions of strictly convex domains with $C^3$ boundaries are uniquely determined by the travelling times of billiard trajectories in their exteriors and also by their so called scattering length spectra. However the case $d = 2$ is not properly covered in \cite{NS1}. In the present paper we give a separate different proof of the same result in the case $d = 2$.
In this paper, we consider a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, endowed with a magnetic potential $α$ and a potential $U$. For brevity, this type of systems are called $\MP$-systems. On simple $\MP$-systems, we consider both the boundary rigidity problem and scattering rigidity problem, see the introduction for details. We show that these two problems are equivalent on simple $\MP$-systems. Unlike the cases of geodesic or magnetic systems, knowing boundary action functions or scattering relations for only one energy level is insufficient to uniquely determine a simple $\MP$-system, eve…
Consider a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary endowed with a magnetic field. A path taken by a particle of unit charge, mass, and energy is called a magnetic geodesic. It is shown that if everything is real-analytic, the topology, metric, and magnetic field are uniquely determined by the scattering relation of the magnetic geodesic flow, measured at the boundary. Conjugate points are allowed with minor restrictions. In exchange for the real-analytic assumption, prior results in boundary rigidity are greatly generalized.
Take two isomorphic convex co-compact co-infinite volume Kleinian groups, whose regular sets are diffeomorphic. The quotient of hyperbolic 3-space by these groups gives two hyperbolic 3-manifolds whose scattering operators may be compared. We prove that the operator norm of the difference between the scattering operators is small, then the groups are related by a coorespondingly small quasi-conformal deformation. This in turn implies that the two hyperbolic 3-manifolds are quasi-isometric.
It has been shown in \cite{DPSU} that, under some additional assumptions, two simple domains with the same scattering data are equivalent. We show that the simplicity of a region can be read from the metric in the boundary and the scattering data. This lets us extend the results in \cite{DPSU} to regions with the same scattering data, where only one is known apriori to be simple. We will then use this results to resolve a local version of a question by Robert Bryant. That is, we show that a surface of constant curvature can not be modified in a small region while keeping all the curves of some…
Scattering rigidity of a Riemannian manifold allows one to tell the metric of a manifold with boundary by looking at the directions of geodesics at the boundary. Lens rigidity allows one to tell the metric of a manifold with boundary from the same information plus the length of geodesics. There are a variety of results about lens rigidity but very little is known for scattering rigidity. We will discuss the subtle difference between these two types of rigidities and prove that they are equivalent for two-dimensional simple manifolds with boundaries. In particular, this implies that two-dimensi…
We consider the scattering and lens rigidity of compact surfaces with boundary that have a trapped geodesic. In particular we show that the flat cylinder and the flat Möbius strip are determined by their lens data. We also see by example that the flat Möbius strip is not determined by it's scattering data. We then consider the case of negatively curved cylinders with convex boundary and show that they are lens rigid.
We prove that the flat product metric on $D^n\times S^1$ is scattering rigid where $D^n$ is the unit ball in $\R^n$ and $n\geq 2$. The scattering data (loosely speaking) of a Riemannian manifold with boundary is map $S:U^+\partial M\to U^-\partial M$ from unit vectors $V$ at the boundary that point inward to unit vectors at the boundary that point outwards. The map (where defined) takes $V$ to $γ'_V(T_0)$ where $γ_V$ is the unit speed geodesic determined by $V$ and $T_0$ is the first positive value of $t$ (when it exists) such that $γ_V(t)$ again lies in the boundary. We show that any other Ri…
Consider a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. Assume all maximally extended geodesics intersect the boundary at both ends. Then to each maximal geodesic segment one can form a triple consisting of the initial and final vectors of the segment and the length of the segment. The collection of all such triples comprises the lens data. In this paper, it is shown that in the category of analytic Riemannian manifolds, the lens data uniquely determine the metric up to isometry. There are no convexity assumptions on the boundary, and conjugate points are allowed, but with some restriction.
For a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with strictly convex boundary $\partial M$, the lens data consists in the set of lengths of geodesics $γ$ with endpoints on $\partial M$, together with their endpoints $(x_-,x_+)\in \partial M\times \partial M$ and tangent exit vectors $(v_-,v_+)\in T_{x_-} M\times T_{x_+} M$. We show deformation lens rigidity for a large class of manifolds which includes all manifolds with negative curvature and strictly convex boundary, possibly with non-trivial topology and trapped geodesics. For the same class of manifolds in dimension $2$, we prove that the set of endpoin…
This article is the second in a series of two whose aim is to extend a recent result of Guillarmou-Lefeuvre [arXiv:1806.04218] on the local rigidity of the marked length spectrum from the case of compact negatively-curved Riemannian manifolds to the case of manifolds with hyperbolic cusps. We deal with the nonlinear version of the problem and prove that such manifolds are locally rigid for nonlinear perturbations of the metric that slightly decrease at infinity. Our proof relies on the linear theory addressed in [arXiv:1907.01809] and on a careful analytic study of the generalized X-ray transf…
In this paper we study the embedding of Riemannian manifolds in low codimension. The well-known result of Nash and Kuiper says that any short embedding in codimension one can be uniformly approximated by $C^1$ isometric embeddings. This statement clearly cannot be true for $C^2$ embeddings in general, due to the classical rigidity in the Weyl problem. In fact Borisov extended the latter to embeddings of class $C^{1,α}$ with $α>2/3$. On the other hand he announced in that the Nash-Kuiper statement can be extended to local $C^{1,α}$ embeddings with $α<(1+n+n^2)^{-1}$, where $n$ is the dimension …
Consider a broken geodesics $α([0,l])$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with boundary of dimension $n\geq 3$. The broken geodesics are unions of two geodesics with the property that they have a common end point. Assume that for every broken geodesic $α([0,l])$ starting at and ending to the boundary $\partial M$ we know the starting point and direction $(α(0),α'(0))$, the end point and direction $(α(l),α'(l))$, and the length $l$. We show that this data determines uniquely, up to an isometry, the manifold $(M,g)$. This result has applications in inverse problems on very heterogeneous me…
We consider the motion of a classical colored spinless particle under the influence of an external Yang-Mills potential $A$ on a compact manifold with boundary of dimension $\geq 3$. We show that under suitable convexity assumptions, we can recover the potential $A$, up to gauge transformations, from the lens data of the system, namely, scattering data plus travel times between boundary points.
For a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, endowed with a magnetic potential $α$, we consider the problem of restoring the metric $g$ and the magnetic potential $α$ from the values of the Mañé action potential between boundary points and the associated linearized problem. We study simple magnetic systems. In this case, knowledge of the Mañé action potential is equivalent to knowledge of the scattering relation on the boundary which maps a starting point and a direction of a magnetic geodesic into its end point and direction. This problem can only be solved up to an isometry and a gauge t…
This is a significantly improved version with new applications. We show that there are many cohomogeneity one manifolds which do not admit an analytic invariant metric with non-negative sectional curvature, although they do have a smooth one. In particular, there are no invariant metric with positive curvature.
In this paper, we prove that every real analytic totally nondegenerate model CR manifold of length >= 3 has rigidity. This result was actually conjectured before by Valerii Beloshapka as the so-called "maximum conjecture". It follows that the transformation Lie group of all CR automorphisms associated with each of the mentioned models does not include any nonlinear map.
We characterize the universal covering of connected analytic pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which admit a non-trivial and isometric action of the simple Lie group $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$ with a dense orbit preserving a finite volume. If such manifold is also weakly irreducible we prove that $M$ is isometric to, or a quotient space of, a simple Lie group containing $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$.
Let $σ$ be the scattering relation on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with non-necessarily convex boundary, that maps initial points of geodesic rays on the boundary and initial directions to the outgoing point on the boundary and the outgoing direction. Let $\ell$ be the length of that geodesic ray. We study the question of whether the metric $g$ is uniquely determined, up to an isometry, by knowledge of $σ$ and $\ell$ restricted on some subset $D$. We allow possible conjugate points but we assume that the conormal bundle of the geodesics issued from $D$ covers $T^*M$; and that those geodes…
We study the deformation of spherical conical metrics with at least some of the cone angles larger than $2π$. We show in this note via synthetic geometry that for one family of such metrics, there is local rigidity in the choice of cone positions if angles are fixed. This gives an evidence of the analytic obstruction considered in recent works of Mazzeo and author.
H. Weyl in 1921 demonstrated that for a connected manifold of dimension greater than $1$, if two Riemannian metrics are conformal and have the same geodesics up to a reparametrization, then one metric is a constant scaling of the other one. In the present paper, we investigate the analogous property for sub-Riemannian metrics. In particular, we prove that the analogous statement, called the Weyl projective rigidity, holds either in real analytic category for all sub-Riemannian metrics on distributions with a specific property of their complex abnormal extremals, called minimal order, or in smo…
We are concerned with the global weak rigidity of the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci (GCR) equations on Riemannian manifolds and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds into the Euclidean spaces. We develop a unified intrinsic approach to establish the global weak rigidity of both the GCR equations and isometric immersions of the Riemannian manifolds, independent of the local coordinates, and provide further insights of the previous local results and arguments. The critical case has also been analyzed. To achieve this, we first reformulate the GCR equations with div-curl structure …
Let $M$ be a finite volume analytic pseudo-Riemannian manifold that admits an isometric $G$-action with a dense orbit, where $G$ is a connected non-compact simple Lie group. For low-dimensional $M$, i.e. $\dim(M) < 2\dim(G)$, when the normal bundle to the $G$-orbits is non-integrable and for suitable conditions, we prove that $M$ has a $G$-invariant metric which is locally isometric to a Lie group with a bi-invariant metric (local rigidity theorem). The latter does not require $M$ to be complete as in previous works. We also prove a general result showing that $M$ is, up to a finite covering, …
Let $f: Y \rightarrow X$ be a continuous map between a compact real analytic Kähler manifold $(Y,g)$ and a compact complex {hyperbolic manifold} $(X,g_0)$. In this paper we give a lower bound of the diastatic entropy of $(Y,g)$ in terms of the diastatic entropy of $(X,g_0)$ and the degree of $f$. When the lower bound is attained we get geometric rigidity theorems for the diastatic entropy analogous to the ones obtained by G. Besson, G. Courtois and S. Gallot [2] for the volume entropy. As a corollary, when $X=Y$, we show that the minimal diastatic entropy is achieved if and only if $g$ is holo…
Let $Ω$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary and let $u_t$ be the solution of the heat equation on $Ω$, having constant unit initial data $u_0=1$ and Dirichlet boundary conditions ($u_t=0$ on the boundary, at all times). If at every time $t$ the normal derivative of $u_t$ is a constant function on the boundary, we say that $Ω$ has the {\it constant flow property}. This gives rise to an overdetermined parabolic problem, and our aim is to classify the manifolds having this property. In fact, if the metric is analytic, we prove that $Ω$ has the constant flow property if and only …
We consider local CR-immersions of a strictly pseudoconvex real hypersurface $M\subset\bC^{n+1}$, near a point $p\in M$, into the unit sphere $\mathbb S\subset\bC^{n+d+1}$ with $d>0$. Our main result is that if there is such an immersion $f\colon (M,p)\to \mathbb S$ and $d < n/2$, then $f$ is {\em rigid} in the sense that any other immersion of $(M,p)$ into $\mathbb S$ is of the form $ϕ\circ f$, where $ϕ$ is a biholomorphic automorphism of the unit ball $\mathbb B\subset\bC^{n+d+1}$. As an application of this result, we show that an isolated singularity of an irreducible analytic variety of co…
Let $X\subset P^N$ be a variety (respectively a patch of an analytic submanifold) and let $x\in X$ be a general point. We show that if the projective second fundamental form of $X$ at $x$ is isomorphic to the second fundamental form of a point of a Segre $P^n\times P^m$, $n,m\geq 2$, a Grassmaniann $G(2,n+2)$, $n\geq 4$, or the Cayley plane $OP^2$, then $X$ is the corresponding homogeneous variety (resp. a patch of the corresponding homogeneous variety). If the projective second fundamental form of $X$ at $x$ is isomorphic to the second fundamental form of a point of a Veronese $v_2(P^n)$ and …
