High-significance measurements of the monopole thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich CMB spectral distortions have the potential to tightly constrain poorly understood baryonic feedback processes. The sky-averaged Compton-y distortion and its relativistic correction are measures of the total thermal energy in electrons in the observable universe and their mean temperature. We use the CAMELS suite of hydrodynamic simulations to explore possible constraints on parameters describing the subgrid implementation of feedback from active galactic nuclei and supernovae, assuming a PIXIE-like measurement. The small 25 Mpc/h CAMELS boxes present challenges due to the significant cosmic variance. We utilize machine learning to construct interpolators through the noisy simulation data. Using the halo model, we translate the simulation halo mass functions into correction factors to reduce cosmic variance where required. Our results depend on the subgrid model. In the case of IllustrisTNG, we find that the best-determined parameter combination can be measured to ~2% and corresponds to a product of AGN and SN feedback. In the case of SIMBA, the tightest constraint is ~0.2% on a ratio between AGN and SN feedback. A second orthogonal parameter combination can be measured to ~8%. Our results demonstrate the significant constraining power a measurement of the late-time spectral distortion monopoles would have for baryonic feedback models.
Baryonic feedback effects consist of a major systematic for upcoming weak-lensing and galaxy-clustering surveys. In this paper, we present an emulator for the baryonic suppression of the matter power spectrum. The emulator is based on the baryonification model, containing seven free parameters that are connected to the gas profiles and stellar abundances in haloes. We show that with the baryonic emulator, we can not only recover the power spectra of hydro-dynamical simulations at sub-percent precision but also establish a connection between the baryonic suppression of the power spectrum and th…
Modern weak-lensing observations are becoming increasingly sensitive to baryonic feedback processes which are still poorly understood. So far, this challenge has been faced either by imposing scale-cuts in the data or by modelling baryonic effects with simple, one-parameter models. In this paper, we rely on a more general, seven-parameter prescription of baryonic feedback effects, which is primarily motivated by observations and has been shown to agree with a plethora of hydrodynamical simulations. By combining weak-lensing data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000) with observations of gas …
In the context of forthcoming galaxy surveys, to ensure unbiased constraints on cosmology and gravity when using non-linear structure information, percent-level accuracy is required when modelling the power spectrum. This calls for frameworks that can accurately capture the relevant physical effects, while allowing for deviations from $Λ$CDM. Massive neutrino and baryonic physics are two of the most relevant such effects. We present an integration of the halo model reaction frameworks for massive neutrinos and beyond-$Λ$CDM cosmologies. The integrated halo model reaction, combined with a pseud…
Measurements of gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) hold the promise of yielding unique insights into cosmology at high redshift. Uncertainties due to baryonic effects associated with galaxy formation and evolution, including gas cooling, star formation, and feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and supernovae, have typically been neglected when forecasting the sensitivity of future CMB surveys. In this paper, we determine the impact of these effects using four suites of hydrodynamical simulations which incorporate various prescriptions for baryonic processes, n…
Understanding nonlinear structure formation is crucial for fully exploring the data generated by stage IV surveys, requiring accurate modelling of the power spectrum. This is challenging for deviations from $Λ$CDM, but we must ensure that alternatives are well tested, to avoid false detections. We present an extension of the halo model reaction framework for interacting dark energy. We modify the halo model including the additional force present in the Dark Scattering model and implement it into ReACT. The reaction is combined with a pseudo spectrum from EuclidEmulator2 and compared to N-body …
We present and test a framework that models the three-dimensional distribution of mass in the Universe as a function of cosmological and astrophysical parameters. Our approach combines two different techniques: a rescaling algorithm that modifies the cosmology of gravity-only N-body simulations, and a baryonification algorithm which mimics the effects of astrophysical processes induced by baryons, such as star formation and AGN feedback. We show how this approach can accurately reproduce the effects of baryons on the matter power spectrum of various state-of-the-art hydro-dynamical simulations…
We use the published Planck and SPT cluster catalogs and recently published $y$-distortion maps to put strong observational limits on the contribution of the fluctuating part of the $y$-type distortions to the $y$-distortion monopole. Our bounds are $5.4\times 10^{-8} < \langle y\rangle < 2.2\times 10^{-6}$. Our upper bound is a factor of 6.8 stronger than the currently best upper $95\%$ confidence limit from COBE-FIRAS of $\langle y\rangle <15\times 10^{-6}$. In the standard cosmology, large scale structure is the only source of such distortions and our limits therefore constrain the baryonic…
Following our previous work(Jiang et al.(2008)), in which we studied the merger time-scale of galaxies in a high-resolution cosmological hydro/N-body simulation, we investigate the potential influence of uncertainties in the numerical implementation of baryonic physics on the merger time-scale. The simulation used in the previous work suffers from the overcooling problem which causes the central galaxies of large halos too massive. This may result in a shortened merger time-scale compared to that in the real universe. We run a similar simulation, but the stellar mass is significantly reduced t…
Numerical simulations show that redshift space distortions (RSD) introduce strong scale dependence in the power spectra of halos, with ten percent deviations relative to linear theory predictions even on relatively large scales (k<0.1h/Mpc) and even in the absence of satellites (which induce Fingers-of-God, FoG, effects). If unmodeled these effects prevent one from extracting cosmological information from RSD surveys. In this paper we use perturbation theory (PT) and halo biasing model and apply it to the distribution function approach to RSD, in which RSD is decomposed into several correlator…

Baryonic feedback can significantly modify the spatial distribution of matter on small scales and create a bulk relative velocity between the dominant cold dark matter and the hot gas. We study the consequences of such bulk motions using two high resolution hydrodynamic simulations, one with no feedback and one with very strong feedback. We find that relative velocities of order $100\ \kms$ are produced in the strong feedback simulation whereas it is much smaller when there is no feedback. Such relative motions induce dipole distortions to the gas, which we quantify by computing the dipole cor…

Accurate cosmology from upcoming weak lensing surveys relies on knowledge of the total matter power spectrum at percent level at scales $k < 10$ $h$/Mpc, for which modelling the impact of baryonic physics is crucial. We compare measurements of the total matter power spectrum from the Horizon cosmological hydrodynamical simulations: a dark matter-only run, one with full baryonic physics, and another lacking Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback. Baryons cause a suppression of power at $k\simeq 10$ $h/$Mpc of $<15\%$ at $z=0$, and an enhancement of a factor of a few at smaller scales due to the …
Departures of the energy spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from a perfect blackbody probe a fundamental property of the universe -- its thermal history. Current upper limits, dating back some 25 years, limit such spectral distortions to 50 parts per million and provide a foundation for the Hot Big Bang model of the early universe. Modern upgrades to the 1980's-era technology behind these limits enable three orders of magnitude or greater improvement in sensitivity. The standard cosmological model provides compelling targets at this sensitivity, spanning cosmic history from the …
An accurate modelling of baryonic feedback effects is required to exploit the full potential of future weak-lensing surveys such as Euclid or LSST. In this second paper in a series of two, we combine Euclid-like mock data of the cosmic shear power spectrum with an eROSITA X-ray mock of the cluster gas fraction to run a combined likelihood analysis including both cosmological and baryonic parameters. Following the first paper of this series, the baryonic effects (based on the baryonic correction model of Schneider et al. 2019) are included in both the tomographic power spectrum and the covarian…
Next-generation weak lensing (WL) surveys, such as by the Vera Rubin Observatory's LSST, the $\textit{Roman}$ Space Telescope, and the $\textit{Euclid}$ space mission, will supply vast amounts of data probing small, highly nonlinear scales. Extracting information from these scales requires higher-order statistics and the controlling of related systematics such as baryonic effects. To account for baryonic effects in cosmological analyses at reduced computational cost, semi-analytic baryonic correction models (BCMs) have been proposed. Here, we study the accuracy of BCMs for WL peak counts, a we…
Feedback processes from baryons are expected to strongly affect weak-lensing observables of current and future cosmological surveys. In this paper we present a new parametrisation of halo profiles based on gas, stellar, and dark matter density components. This parametrisation is used to modify outputs of gravity-only $N$-body simulations (following the prescription of Schneider and Teyssier [1]) in order to mimic baryonic effects on the matter density field. The resulting baryonic correction model relies on a few well motivated physical parameters and is able to reproduce the redshift zero clu…
We develop a model for the matter power spectrum as the sum of Zeldovich approximation and even powers of $k$, i.e., $A_0 - A_2k^2 + A_4k^4 - ...$, compensated at low $k$. With terms up to $k^4$ the model can predict the true power spectrum to a few percent accuracy up to $k\sim 0.7 h \rm{Mpc}^{-1}$, over a wide range of redshifts and models. The $A_n$ coefficients contain information about cosmology, in particular amplitude of fluctuations. We write a simple form of the covariance matrix as a sum of Gaussian part and $A_0$ variance, which reproduces the simulations remarkably well. In contras…
Understanding a behavior of galaxy biasing is crucial for future galaxy redshift surveys. One aim is to measure the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) within the precision of a few percent level. Using 30 large cosmological N-body simulations for a standard LCDM cosmology, we study the halo biasing over a wide redshift range. We compare the simulation results with theoretical predictions proposed by Matsubara (2008) which naturally incorporate the halo bias and redshift-space distortions into their formalism of perturbation theory with a resummation technique via the Lagrangian picture. The p…
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) energy spectrum is a near-perfect blackbody. The standard model of cosmology predicts small spectral distortions to this form, but no such distortion of the sky-averaged CMB spectrum has yet been measured. We calculate the largest expected distortion, which arises from the inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons off hot, free electrons, known as the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. We show that the predicted signal is roughly one order of magnitude below the current bound from the COBE-FIRAS experiment, but can be detected at enormous significanc…
We present a method to extract the redshift-space distortions beta parameter in configuration space with a minimal set of cosmological assumptions. We show that a novel combination of the observed monopole and quadrupole correlation functions can remove efficiently the impact of mild non linearities and redshift errors. The method offers a series of convenient properties: it does not depend on the theoretical linear correlation function, the mean galaxy density is irrelevant, only convolutions are used, there is no explicit dependence on linear bias. Analyses based on dark matter N-body simula…
Ever refined cosmological measurements have established the $Λ$CDM concordance model, with the key cosmological parameters being determined to percent-level precision today. This allows us to make explicit predictions for the spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) created by various processes occurring in the early Universe. Here, we summarize all guaranteed CMB distortions and assess their total uncertainty within $Λ$CDM. We also compare simple methods for approximating them, highlighting some of the subtle aspects when it comes to interpreting future distortion measure…
We study the effect of baryonic processes on the halo mass function in the galaxy cluster mass range using a catalogue of 153 high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations performed with the AMR code ramses. We use the results of our simulations within a simple analytical model to gauge the effects of baryon physics on the halo mass function. Neglect of AGN feedback leads to a significant boost in the cluster mass function similar to that reported by other authors. However, including AGN feedback not only gives rise to systems that are similar to observed galaxy clusters, but they al…

In the near future, cosmology will enter the wide and deep galaxy survey area allowing high-precision studies of the large scale structure of the universe in three dimensions. To test cosmological models and determine their parameters accurately, it is natural to confront data with exact theoretical expectations expressed in the observational parameter space (angles and redshift). The data-driven galaxy number count fluctuations on redshift shells, can be used to build correlation functions $C(θ; z_1, z_2)$ on and between shells which can probe the baryonic acoustic oscillations, the distance-…
Although redshift-space distortions only affect inferred distances and not angles, they still distort the projected angular clustering of galaxy samples selected using redshift dependent quantities. From an Eulerian view-point, this effect is caused by the apparent movement of galaxies into or out of the sample. From a Lagrangian view-point, we find that projecting the redshift-space overdensity field over a finite radial distance does not remove all the anisotropic distortions. We investigate this effect, showing that it strongly boosts the amplitude of clustering for narrow samples and can a…
We use the EAGLE galaxy formation simulation to study the effects of baryons on the power spectrum of the total matter and dark matter distributions and on the velocity fields of dark matter and galaxies. On scales $k{\stackrel{>}{{}_\sim}} 4{h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}}$ the effect of baryons on the amplitude of the total matter power spectrum is greater than $1\%$. The back-reaction of baryons affects the density field of the dark matter at the level of $\sim3\%$ on scales of $1\leq k/({h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}})\leq 5$. The dark matter velocity divergence power spectrum at $k{\stackrel{<}{{}_\sim}}0.5{h\,{\…
We present significant improvements in cosmic distance measurements from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, achieved by applying the reconstruction of the baryonic acoustic feature technique. We show using both data and simulations that the reconstruction technique can often be effective despite patchiness of the survey, significant edge effects and shot-noise. We investigate three redshift bins in the redshift range 0.2<$z$<1, and in all three find improvement after reconstruction in the detection of the baryonic acoustic feature and its usage as a standard ruler. We measure model independent di…
The non-resonant conversion of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons into scalar as well as light pseudoscalar particles such as axion-like particles (ALPs) in the presence of turbulent magnetic fields can cause a unique, spatially fluctuating spectral distortion in the CMB. We use the publicly available Planck temperature maps for the frequency channels (70-545 GHz) to obtain the first ALP distortion map using $45\%$ clean part of the sky. The $95^{th}$ percentile upper limit on the RMS fluctuation of ALP distortions from the cleanest part of the CMB sky at $15$ arcmin angular resolution …

Silk damping of primordial small-scale perturbations in the photon-baryon fluid due to diffusion of photons inevitably creates spectral distortions in the CMB. With the proposed CMB experiment PIXIE it might become possible to measure these distortions and thereby constrain the primordial power spectrum at comoving wavenumbers 50 Mpc^{-1} < k < 10^4 Mpc^{-1}. Since primordial fluctuations in the CMB on these scales are completely erased by Silk damping, these distortions may provide the only way to shed light on otherwise unobservable aspects of inflationary physics. A consistent treatment of …
The redshift-space distortion (RSD) in the observed distribution of galaxies is known as a powerful probe of cosmology. Observations of large-scale RSD have given tight constraints on the linear growth rate of the large-scale structures in the universe. On the other hand, the small-scale RSD, caused by galaxy random motions inside clusters, has not been much used in cosmology, but also has cosmological information because universes with different cosmological parameters have different halo mass functions and virialized velocities. We focus on the projected correlation function $w(r_p)$ and the…
After numerous astronomical and experimental searches, the precise particle nature of dark matter is still unknown. The standard Weakly Interacting Massive Particle(WIMP) dark matter, despite successfully explaining the large-scale features of the universe, has long-standing small-scale issues. The spectral distortion in the Cosmic Microwave Background(CMB) caused by Silk damping in the pre-recombination era allows one to access information on a range of small scales $0.3 \, {\rm Mpc} < k < 10^4 \, \rm Mpc^{-1}$, whose dynamics can be precisely described using linear theory. In this paper, we …
We investigate the impact of statistical and systematic errors on measurements of linear redshift-space distortions (RSD) in future cosmological surveys, analyzing large catalogues of dark-matter halos from the BASICC simulation. These allow us to estimate the dependence of errors on typical survey properties, as volume, galaxy density and mass (i.e. bias factor) of the adopted tracer. We find that measures of the specific growth rate β=f/b using the Hamilton/Kaiser harmonic expansion of the redshift-space correlation function ξ(r_p,π) on scales larger than 3/h Mpc are typically under-estimate…

By using N-body hydrodynamical cosmological simulations in which the chemistry of major metals and molecules is consistently solved for, we study the interaction of metallic fine-structure lines with the CMB. Our analysis shows that the collisional induced emissions in the OI 145 $μ$m and CII 158 $μ$m lines during reionization introduce a distortion of the CMB spectrum at low frequencies ($ν< 300$ GHz) with amplitudes up to $ΔI_ν/B_ν(T_{\rm CMB})\sim 10^{-8}$-$10^{-7}$, i.e., at the $\sim 0.1$ percent level of FIRAS upper limits. Shorter wavelength fine-structure transitions (OI 63 $μ$m, FeII …
Following the pioneering observations with COBE in the early 1990s, studies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) have focused on temperature and polarization anisotropies. CMB spectral distortions - tiny departures of the CMB energy spectrum from that of a perfect blackbody - provide a second, independent probe of fundamental physics, with a reach deep into the primordial Universe. The theoretical foundation of spectral distortions has seen major advances in recent years, which highlight the immense potential of this emerging field. Spectral distortions probe a fundamental property of the …
Accurate mock catalogues are essential for assessing systematics in the cosmological analysis of large galaxy surveys. Anisotropic two-point clustering measurements from the same simulation show some scatter for different lines of sight (LOS), but are on average equal, due to cosmic variance. This results in scatter in the measured cosmological parameters. We use the OuterRim N-body simulation halo catalogue to investigate this, considering the 3 simulation axes as LOS. The quadrupole of the 2-point statistics is particularly sensitive to changes in the LOS, with sub-percent level differences …
