This paper discusses the dilaton, Kähler moduli and hidden sector matter chiral superfields of heterotic $M$-theory vacua in which the hidden sector gauge bundle is chosen to be a line bundle with an anomalous U(1) structure group. For simplicity of notation, the theory is compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold with $h^{1,1}=1$, although all methods and results apply to more general heterotic compactifications. After introducing a non-perturbative $F$-term potential and coupling to supergravity, the canonically normalized scalar and fermion mass eigenstates, evaluated around a fixed supersymmetry breaking vacuum, are computed and the explicit expressions for their masses presented. In addition, the relevant couplings of these eigenstates to themselves and to chiral matter in the observable sector are evaluated. The decay rates of generic observable sector scalars into both moduli and hidden sector matter scalars and fermions are then presented. This opens the door to explicit calculations of the decay of an observable sector cosmological inflaton into moduli and hidden sector dark matter candidates. Finally, an explicit flux and gaugino condensate induced non-perturbative superpotential is introduced which is shown to stabilize three of the four real components of the moduli fields.
We study the moduli spaces of heterotic/type II dual pairs in four dimensions with N=2 supersymmetry corresponding to non-geometric Calabi-Yau backgrounds on the type II side and to T-fold compactifications on the heterotic side. The vector multiplets moduli space receives perturbative corrections in the heterotic description only, and non-perturbative correction in both descriptions. We derive explicitely the perturbative corrections to the heterotic four-dimensional prepotential, using the knowledge of its singularity structure and of the heterotic perturbative duality group. We also derive …
We explore a relation between four-dimensional N=2 heterotic vacua induced by Mirror Symmetry via Heterotic/Type II duality. It allows us to compute the α' corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space of heterotic compactifications on K3xT^2 in the limit of large base of the elliptic K3. We concentrate on the case of point-like instantons on orbifold singularities leading to low-dimensional hypermultiplet moduli spaces.
We explore the moduli space of heterotic strings in two dimensions. In doing so, we introduce new lines of compactified theories with Spin(24) gauge symmetry and discuss compactifications with Wilson lines. The phase structure of d=2 heterotic string theory is examined by classifying the hypersurfaces in moduli space which support massless quanta or discrete states. Finally, we compute the torus amplitude over much of the moduli space.
We analyse the vector bundle moduli arising from generic heterotic compactifications from the point of view of quiver representations. Phenomena such as stability walls, crossing between chambers of supersymmetry, splitting of non-Abelian bundles and dynamic generation of D-terms are succinctly encoded into finite quivers. By studying the Poincaré polynomial of the quiver moduli space using the Reineke formula, we can learn about such useful concepts as Donaldson-Thomas invariants, instanton transitions and supersymmetry breaking.
We present the first example of a Kahler potential for heterotic M-theory which includes gauge bundle moduli. These moduli describe the background gauge field configurations living on the orbifold fixed planes. We concentrate on the bundle moduli describing the size and SU(2) orientation of a gauge five brane - a soliton which is primarily composed of these gauge fields. Our results are valid when the width of this object is small compared to the overall size of the Calabi-Yau threefold. We find that, in general, it is not consistent to truncate away these moduli in a simple manner.
We study supersymmetric compactification to four dimensions with non-zero H-flux in heterotic string theory. The background metric is generically conformally balanced and can be conformally Kahler if the primitive part of the H-flux vanishes. Analyzing the linearized variational equations, we write down necessary conditions for the existence of moduli associated with the metric. In a heterotic model that is dual to a IIB compactification on an orientifold, we find the metric moduli in a fixed H-flux background via duality and check that they satisfy the required conditions. We also discuss exp…
Aiming at improving our knowledge of the low-energy limit of heterotic orbifold compactifications, we determine at lowest order the Kahler potential of matter fields in the case where more than three bulk Kahler moduli appear. Interestingly, bulk matter fields couple to more than one Kahler modulus, a subtle difference with models with only three Kahler moduli that may provide a tool to address the question of moduli stabilization in these models.
Explicit relations among moduli of the Heterotic and Type IIB string theories in 8 dimensions are obtained. We identify the BPS states responsible for gauge enhancements in the type IIB theory and their dual partners in the Heterotic theory compactified with and without Wilson lines. The masses of BPS states in Type IIB string theory compactified on the base space of a elliptically fibred K3 are computed explicitly for the special cases in which the complex structure of the fibre is constant, ie, for constant scalar fields backgrounds.
We present a Kahler potential for four dimensional heterotic M-theory which includes moduli describing a gauge five brane living on one of the orbifold fixed planes. This result can also be thought of as describing compactifications of either of the weakly coupled heterotic strings in the presence of a gauge five brane. This is the first example of a Kahler potential in these theories which includes moduli describing background gauge field configurations. Our results are valid when the solitons width is much smaller than the size scale of the Calabi-Yau threefold and can be used to provide a m…
Heterotic string compactifications on a $K3$ surface $\mathfrak{S}$ depend on a choice of hyperkähler metric, anti-self-dual gauge connection and Kalb-Ramond flux, parametrized by hypermultiplet scalars. The metric on hypermultiplet moduli space is in principle computable within the $(0,2)$ superconformal field theory on the heterotic string worldsheet, although little is known about it in practice. Using duality with type II strings compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold, we predict the form of the quaternion-Kähler metric on hypermultiplet moduli space when $\mathfrak{S}$ is elliptically fib…
In this paper, we present a formalism for computing the non-vanishing Higgs mu-terms in a heterotic standard model. This is accomplished by calculating the cubic product of the cohomology groups associated with the vector bundle moduli (phi), Higgs (H) and Higgs conjugate (Hbar) superfields. This leads to terms proportional to phi H Hbar in the low energy superpotential which, for non-zero moduli expectation values, generate moduli dependent mu-terms of the form <phi> H Hbar. It is found that these interactions are subject to two very restrictive selection rules, each arising from a Leray spec…
Complex structure moduli of a Calabi-Yau threefold in $N=1$ supersymmetric heterotic compactifications can be stabilized by holomorphic vector bundles. The stabilized moduli are determined by a computation of Atiyah class. In this paper, we study how this mechanism work in the context of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds where complex structure moduli space contains two kinds of moduli, ones from base and ones from fibration. With spectral cover bundles, we find three types of situations when holomorphicity of bundles is determined by algebraic cycles supported on special choice of com…
In this brief note we analyse a toy model which can be derived from heterotic string compactifications on half-flat manifolds with SU(3) structure at first order in α' (ie including matter fields). We show that for this model, finding solutions with viable gauge group poses the same problems as finding solutions in the absence of matter fields.
In a recent paper, we derived the leading alpha' corrections to the Kahler potentials for moduli in (0,2) heterotic compactifications. In the same spirit as the LARGE volume stabilization scenario for type IIB orientifolds, we examine whether these quantum corrections, together with a combination of tree-level and non-perturbative superpotentials, are sufficient to stabilize the overall volume modulus at large values. This is not a priori obvious, since the corrections we found are of a lower order than those used in the type IIB setting. Nevertheless, we find that stabilizing the volume at (e…
To understand in detail the contribution of a world-sheet instanton to the superpotential in a heterotic string compactification, one has to understand the moduli dependence (bundle and complex structure moduli) of the one-loop determinants from the fluctuations, which accompany the classical exponential contribution (involving Kähler moduli) when evaluating the world-volume partition function. Here we use techniques to describe geometrically these Pfaffians for spectral bundles over rational base curves in elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds, and provide a (partially exhaustive) list o…
We propose a scenario to stabilize all geometric moduli - that is, the complex structure, Kahler moduli and the dilaton - in smooth heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications without Neveu-Schwarz three-form flux. This is accomplished using the gauge bundle required in any heterotic compactification, whose perturbative effects on the moduli are combined with non-perturbative corrections. We argue that, for appropriate gauge bundles, all complex structure and a large number of other moduli can be perturbatively stabilized - in the most restrictive case, leaving only one combination of Kahler moduli…
We show that fractional flux from Wilson lines can stabilize the moduli of heterotic string compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds. We observe that the Wilson lines used in GUT symmetry breaking naturally induce a fractional flux. When combined with a hidden-sector gaugino condensate, this generates a potential for the complex structure moduli, Kahler moduli, and dilaton. This potential has a supersymmetric AdS minimum at moderately weak coupling and large volume. Notably, the necessary ingredients for this construction are often present in realistic models. We explore the type IIA dual ph…
It is shown that strongly coupled heterotic M-theory with anti-five-branes in the S^1/Z_2 bulk space can have meta-stable vacua which break N=1 supersymmetry and have a small, positive cosmological constant. This is demonstrated for the "minimal" heterotic standard model. This vacuum has the exact MSSM matter spectrum in the observable sector, a trivial hidden sector vector bundle and both five-branes and anti-five-branes in the bulk space. The Kahler moduli for which the cosmological constant has phenomenologically acceptable values are shown to also render the observable sector vector bundle…
Supersymmetric heterotic string models, built from a stable holomorphic vector bundle $V$ on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$, usually come with many vector bundle moduli whose stabilisation is a difficult and complex task. It is therefore of interest to look for bundle constructions which, from the outset, have as few as possible bundle moduli. One way to reach such a set-up is to start from a generic construction and to make discrete modifications of it which are available only over a subset of the bundle moduli space. Turning on such discrete 'twists' constrains the moduli to the corresponding su…
In this paper we study compactifications of heterotic string theory on manifolds satisfying the ddbar-lemma. We consider the Strominger system description of the low energy supergravity to first order in alpha' and show that the moduli of such compactifications are subspaces of familiar cohomology groups such as H^1(TX), H^1(TX*), H^1(End_0(V)) and H^1(End_0(TX)). These groups encode the complex structure, Kahler moduli, bundle moduli and perturbations of the spin connection respectively in the case of a Calabi-Yau compactification. We investigate the fluctuations of only a subset of the condi…
We find attractor equations describing moduli stabilization for heterotic compactifications with generic SU(3)-structure. Complex structure and Kähler moduli are treated on equal footing by using SU(3)xSU(3)-structure at intermediate steps. All independent vacuum data, including VEVs of the stabilized moduli, is encoded in a pair of generating functions that depend on fluxes alone. We work out an explicit example that illustrates our methods.
We discuss non-geometric supersymmetric heterotic string models in D=4, in the framework of the free fermionic construction. We perform a systematic scan of models with four a priori left-right asymmetric Z_2 projections and shifts. We analyze some 2^{20} models, identifying 18 inequivalent classes and addressing variants generated by discrete torsions. They do not contain geometrical or trivial neutral moduli, apart from the dilaton. However, we show the existence of flat directions in the form of exactly marginal deformations and identify patterns of symmetry breaking where product gauge gro…
In this note we analyse the issue of moduli stabilisation in 4d models obtained from heterotic string compactifications on manifolds with SU(3) structure with standard embedding. In order to deal with tractable models we first integrate out the massive fields. We argue that one can not only integrate out the moduli fields, but along the way one has to truncate also the corresponding matter fields. We show that the effective models obtained in this way do not have satisfactory solutions. We also look for stabilised vacua which take into account the presence of the matter fields. We argue that t…
Within a four-dimensional, toroidally compactified heterotic string, we identify (quantized) charge vectors of electrically charged BPS-saturated states (along with the tower of SL(2,Z) related dyonic states), which preserve 1/2 of N=4 supersymmetry and become massless along the hyper-surfaces of enhanced gauge symmetry of the two-torus moduli sub-space. In addition, we identify charge vectors of the dyonic BPS-saturated states (along with the tower of SL(2,Z) related states), which preserve 1/4 of N=4 supersymmetry, and become massless at two points with the maximal gauge symmetry enhancement…
We establish a relation, conjectured recently by E. Witten, between the hypermultiplet moduli space in compactifications of the heterotic string on an A-D-E singularities, and the moduli spaces of three dimensional pure gauge theories with the corresponding A-D-E gauge groups. It is possible to add a bounded number of heterotic fivebranes sitting in the singularity, while (in leading order in $α'$) keeping the heterotic string perturbative. The corresponding hypermultiplet moduli space is given by the moduli space of a three dimensional gauge theory with matter.
We study heterotic string compactifications on nearly Kähler homogeneous spaces, including the gauge field effects which arise at order α'. Using Abelian gauge fields, we are able to solve the Bianchi identity and supersymmetry conditions to this order. The four-dimensional external space-time consists of a domain wall solution with moduli fields varying along the transverse direction. We find that the inclusion of α' corrections improves the moduli stabilization features of this solution. In this case, one of the dilaton and the volume modulus asymptotes to a constant value away from the doma…
We study the problem of string propagation in a general instanton background for the case of the complete heterotic superstring. We define the concept of generalized HyperK\" ahler manifolds and we relate it to (4,4) superconformal theories. We propose a generalized h-map construction that predicts a universal SU(6) symmetry for the modes of the string excitations moving in an instanton background. We also discuss the role of abstract $N$=4 moduli and, applying it to the particular limit case of the solvable SU(2) X R instanton found by Callan et al. we show that it admits deformations and cor…
We present how to construct elliptically fibered K3 surfaces via Weierstrass models which can be parametrized in terms of Wilson lines in the dual heterotic string theory. We work with a subset of reflexive polyhedras that admit two fibers whose moduli spaces contain the ones of the $E_{8}\times E_{8}$ or $\frac{Spin(32)}{\mathbb{Z}_{2}}$ heterotic theory compactified on a two torus without Wilson lines. One can then interpret the additional moduli as a particular Wilson line content in the heterotic strings. A convenient way to find such polytopes is to use graphs of polytopes where links are…
A major problem in discussing heterotic string models is the stabilisation of the many vector bundle moduli via the superpotential generated by world-sheet instantons. In arXiv:1110.6315 we have discussed the method to make a discrete twist in a large and much discussed class of vector bundles such that the generation number gets new contributions (which can be tuned suitably) and at the same time the space of bundle moduli of the new, twisted bundle is a proper subspace (where the 'new', non-generic twist class exists) of the original bundle moduli space; one thus gets a model, closely relate…
Holomorphic gauge fields in N=1 supersymmetric heterotic compactifications can constrain the complex structure moduli of a Calabi-Yau manifold. In this paper, the tools necessary to use holomorphic bundles as a mechanism for moduli stabilization are systematically developed. We review the requisite deformation theory -- including the Atiyah class, which determines the deformations of the complex structure for which the gauge bundle becomes non-holomorphic and, hence, non-supersymmetric. In addition, two equivalent approaches to this mechanism of moduli stabilization are presented. The first is…
We propose that under certain conditions heterotic string compactifications on half-flat and nearly-Kahler manifolds are equivalent. Based on this correspondence we argue that the moduli space of the nearly-Kahler manifolds under discussion consists only of the Kahler deformations moduli space and there is no correspondent for the complex structure deformations.
Compactifications of heterotic string theory on Generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds have been expected to give the same type of flexibility that type IIB compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds have. In this note we generalize the work done on half-flat manifolds by other authors, to show how flux quantization occurs in the general case, by starting with a basis of harmonic forms and then extending it. However it turns out that only the axions associated with the non-harmonic directions in the space of Kaehler moduli, can be stabilized by the geometric (torsion) terms. Also we argue that the…
We present a few remarks on disconnected components of the moduli space of heterotic string compactifications on $T_2$. We show in particular how the eight dimensional CHL heterotic string can be understood in terms of topologically non-trivial $E_8\times E_8$ and $\Spin(32)/Z_2$ vector bundles over the torus, and that the respective moduli spaces coincide.
Type II compactifications with varying string coupling can be described elegantly in F-theory/M-theory as compactifications on U - manifolds. Using a similar approach to describe Super Yang-Mills with a varying coupling constant, we argue that at generic points in Narain moduli space, the $E_8 \times E_8$ Heterotic string compactified on $T^2$ is described in M(atrix) theory by N=4 SYM in 3+1 dimensions with base $S^1 \times CP^1$ and a holomorphically varying coupling constant. The $CP^1$ is best described as the base of an elliptic K3 whose fibre is the complexified coupling constant of the …
We consider non-perturbative superpotentials from world-sheet instantons wrapped on holomorphic genus zero curves in heterotic string theory. These superpotential contributions feature prominently in moduli stabilization and large field axion inflation, which makes their presence or absence, as well as their functional dependence on moduli, an important issue. We develop geometric methods to compute the instanton superpotentials for heterotic string theory with monad and extension bundles. Using our methods, we find a variety of examples with a non-vanishing superpotential. In view of standard…
We study the possibility of obtaining metastable de Sitter vacua of heterotic string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold which are classical and simple in the Kähler moduli sector of the theory. For this, we exploit a known necessary condition on the Kähler potential in N=1-supergravity, which we, under the assumption that only moduli fields contribute to supersymmetry breaking, express in terms of a tensorial eigenvalue problem for the Calabi-Yau triple intersection tensor. For three-dimensional moduli spaces we are able to identify the discriminant of the Calabi-Yau intersection te…
N=2 supersymmetric quantum black holes in the heterotic S-T-U model are presented. In particular three classes of axion-free quantum black holes with half the N=2, D=4 supersymmetries unbroken are considered. First, these quantum black holes are investigated at generic points in moduli space. Then linearized non-abelian black holes are investigated representing a subset of non-abelian black hole solutions at critical points of perturbative gauge symmetry enhancement in moduli space. It is shown that the entropy of linearized non-abelian black holes can be obtained, starting at non-critical poi…
Compactifications of the heterotic string on T^d are the simplest, yet rich enough playgrounds to uncover swampland ideas: the U(1)^{d+16} left-moving gauge symmetry gets enhanced at special points in moduli space only to certain groups. We state criteria, based on lattice embedding techniques, to establish whether a gauge group is realized or not. For generic d, we further show how to obtain the moduli that lead to a given gauge group by modifying the method of deleting nodes in the extended Dynkin diagram of the Narain lattice II_{1,17}. More general algorithms to explore the moduli space ar…
We introduce a method of using the a dual type IIA string to compute alpha'-corrections to the moduli space of heterotic string compactifications. In particular we study the hypermultiplet moduli space of a heterotic string on a K3 surface. One application of this machinery shows that type IIB strings compactified on a Calabi-Yau space suffer from worldsheet instantons, spacetime instantons and, in addition, "mixed" instantons which in a sense are both worldsheet and spacetime. As another application we look at the hyperkaehler limit of the moduli space in which the K3 surface becomes an ALE s…
We revisit the duality between heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x T^2 and type IIA compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold X in the hypermultiplet sector. We derive an explicit map between the field variables of the respective moduli spaces at the level of the classical effective actions. We determine the parametrization of the K3 moduli space consistent with the Ferrara-Sabharwal form. From the expression of the holomorphic prepotential we are led to conjecture that both X and its mirror must be K3 fibrations in order for the type IIA theory to have an heterotic dual. We then focus o…
In this paper we analyze the structure of supersymmetric vacua in compactifications of the heterotic string on certain manifolds with SU(3) structure. We first study the effective theories obtained from compactifications on half-flat manifolds and show that solutions which stabilise the moduli at acceptable values are hard to find. We then derive the effective theories associated with compactification on generalised half-flat manifolds. It is shown that these effective theories are consistent with four-dimensional N=1 supergravity and that the superpotential can be obtained by a Gukov-Vafa-Wit…
Within the context of the weakly coupled E8 x E8 heterotic string, we study the hidden sector of heterotic standard model compactifications to four-dimensions. Specifically, we present a class of hidden sector vector bundles - composed of the direct sum of line bundles only - that, together with an effective bulk five-brane, renders the heterotic standard model entirely N=1 supersymmetric. Two explicit hidden sectors are constructed and analyzed in this context; one with the gauge group E7 x U(1) arising from a single line bundle and a second with an SO(12) x U(1) x U(1) gauge group constructe…
Heterotic string theory compactified on a K3 surface times T^2 is believed to be equivalent to type II string theory on a suitable Calabi-Yau threefold. In particular, it must share the same hypermultiplet moduli space. Building on the known twistorial description on the type II side, and on recent progress on the map between type II and heterotic moduli in the `double scaling' limit (where both the type II and heterotic strings become classical), we provide a new twistorial construction of the hypermultiplet moduli space in this limit which is adapted to the symmetries of the heterotic string…
In this paper, we show that the presence of gauge fields in heterotic Calabi-Yau compacitifications causes the stabilisation of some, or all, of the complex structure moduli of the Calabi-Yau manifold while maintaining a Minkowski vacuum. Certain deformations of the Calabi-Yau complex structure, with all other moduli held fixed, can lead to the gauge bundle becoming non-holomorphic and, hence, non-supersymmetric. This leads to an F-term potential which stabilizes the corresponding complex structure moduli. We use 10- and 4-dimensional field theory arguments as well as a derivation based purely…
The problem of the stabilization of moduli is discussed within the context of compactified strongly coupled heterotic string theory. It is shown that all geometric, vector bundle and five-brane moduli are completely fixed, within a phenomenologically acceptable range, by non-perturbative physics. This result requires, in addition to the full space of moduli, non-vanishing Neveu-Schwarz flux, gaugino condensation with threshold corrections and the explicit form of the Pfaffians in string instanton superpotentials. The stable vacuum presented here has a negative cosmological constant. The possib…
We consider toroidal asymmetric orbifolds of the heterotic string preserving all 16 supercharges, developing a general formalism to study components of the moduli space characterized by rank reduction of the gauge group. In particular we construct six- and four-dimensional heterotic islands with no massless moduli other than the dilaton. The formalism involves the Leech lattice, its automorphisms and their corresponding invariant and normal, or coinvariant, sublattices.
We consider supersymmetric compactifications of type IIB and the weakly coupled heterotic string with G resp.H-flux and gaugino condensation in a hidden sector included. We point out that proper inclusion of the non-perturbative effects changes the Hodge structure of the allowed fluxes in type IIB significantly. In the heterotic theory it is known that, in contrast to the potential read off from dimensional reduction, the effective four-dimensional description demands for consistency a non-vanishing H^{2,1} component if a H^{3,0} component is already present balancing the condensate. The H^{2,…
We investigate the subset of exactly solvable (0,4) world sheet supersymmetric string vacua contained in a recent class of Gepner-like (0,2) superconformal models. The identification of these models with certain points of enhanced gauge symmetry on K_3 x T_2 can be achieved completely. Furthermore, we extend the construction of in general (0,2) supersymmetric exactly solvable models to the case where also a nontrivial part of the vector bundle is embedded into the hidden E_8 gauge group. For some examples we explicitly calculate the enhanced gauge symmetries and show that they open up the way …
The moduli in a 4D N=1 heterotic compactification on an elliptic CY, as well as in the dual F-theoretic compactification, break into "base" parameters which are even (under the natural involution of the elliptic curves), and "fiber" or twisting parameters; the latter include a continuous part which is odd, as well as a discrete part. We interpret all the heterotic moduli in terms of cohomology groups of the spectral covers, and identify them with the corresponding F-theoretic moduli in a certain stable degeneration. The argument is based on the comparison of three geometric objects: the spectr…
In this paper we discuss some aspects of N=1 type I-heterotic string duality in four dimensions. We consider a particular example of a (weak-weak) dual pair where on the type I side there are only D9-branes corresponding to perturbative heterotic description in a certain region of the moduli space. We match the perturbative type I and heterotic tree-level massless spectra via giving certain scalars appropriate vevs, and point out the crucial role of the perturbative superpotential (on the heterotic side) for this matching. We also discuss the role of anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry present in bo…
We study the sub-structure of the heterotic Kahler moduli space due to the presence of non-Abelian internal gauge fields from the perspective of the four-dimensional effective theory. Internal gauge fields can be supersymmetric in some regions of the Kahler moduli space but break supersymmetry in others. In the context of the four-dimensional theory, we investigate what happens when the Kahler moduli are changed from the supersymmetric to the non-supersymmetric region. Our results provide a low-energy description of supersymmetry breaking by internal gauge fields as well as a physical picture …
Heterotic orbifold models are promising candidates for models with MSSM like spectra. But orbifolds only correspond to a special place in moduli space, the bigger picture is described by the moduli space of Calabi-Yau spaces. In this talk we will make explicit connections between both points of view. To this end we study blowups of orbifold singularities using both explicit constructions and toric geometry techniques. We show that matching of all orbifold models in blowups are possible.
