Compact stellar systems such as Ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) and Globular Clusters (GCs) around galaxies are known to be the tracers of the merger events that have been forming these galaxies. Therefore, identifying such systems allows to study galaxies mass assembly, formation and evolution. However, in the lack of spectroscopic information detecting UCDs/GCs using imaging data is very uncertain. Here, we aim to train a machine learning model to separate these objects from the foreground stars and background galaxies using the multi-wavelength imaging data of the Fornax galaxy cluster in 6 filters, namely u, g, r, i, J and Ks. The classes of objects are highly imbalanced which is problematic for many automatic classification techniques. Hence, we employ Synthetic Minority Over-sampling to handle the imbalance of the training data. Then, we compare two classifiers, namely Localized Generalized Matrix Learning Vector Quantization (LGMLVQ) and Random Forest (RF). Both methods are able to identify UCDs/GCs with a precision and a recall of >93 percent and provide relevances that reflect the importance of each feature dimension %(colors and angular sizes) for the classification. Both methods detect angular sizes as important markers for this classification problem. While it is astronomical expectation that color indices of u-i and i-Ks are the most important colors, our analysis shows that colors such as g-r are more informative, potentially because of higher signal-to-noise ratio. Besides the excellent performance the LGMLVQ method allows further interpretability by providing the feature importance for each individual class, class-wise representative samples and the possibility for non-linear visualization of the data as demonstrated in this contribution. We conclude that employing machine learning techniques to identify UCDs/GCs can lead to promising results.
Integrated light (IL) spectroscopy enables studies of stellar populations beyond the Milky Way and its nearest satellites. In this paper, I will review how IL spectroscopy reveals essential information about globular clusters and the assembly histories of their host galaxies, concentrating particularly on the metallicities and detailed chemical abundances of the GCs in M31. I will also briefly mention the effects of multiple populations on IL spectra, and how observations of distant globular clusters help constrain the source(s) of light-element abundance variations. I will end with future per…
The recent measurements of internal variations of helium in Galactic and extragalactic Globular Clusters (GCs) set binding constraints to the models of formation of Multiple Populations (MPs) in GCs, and gave rise, at the same time, to crucial questions related with the influence of the environment on MP formation as well as with the role played by GCs in the early galactic formation. We present the most recent estimates of helium enrichment in the main populations of a large sample of Galactic and extragalactic GCs.
We present a comparison of high-resolution, integrated-light, detailed chemical abundances for Galactic and extragalactic globular clusters in both massive galaxies and dwarf galaxies. We include measurements of Fe, Ca, Si, Na, and Al for globular cluster samples in the Milky Way, M31, Large Magellanic Cloud, and NGC 5128. These and other recent results from our group on M31 and NGC 5128 are the first chemical abundances derived from discrete absorption features in old stars beyond the Milky Way and its nearest neighbors. These abundances can provide both galaxy enrichment histories and constr…
Globular clusters play a role in many areas of astrophysics, ranging from stellar physics to cosmology. New ground-based optical surveys complemented by observations from space-based telescopes with unprecedented near-infrared capabilities will help us solve the puzzles of their formation histories. In this context, the Wide Survey of the Euclid space mission will provide red and near-infrared data over about 15000 square degrees of the sky. Combined with optical photometry from the ground, it will allow us to construct a global picture of the globular cluster populations in both dense and ten…
We present an investigation of potential signatures of the formation of multiple stellar populations in recently formed extragalactic star clusters. All of the Galactic globular clusters for which good samples of individual stellar abundances are available show evidence for multiple populations. This appears to require that multiple episodes of star formation and light element enrichment are the norm in the history of a globular cluster. We show that there are detectable observational signatures of multiple formation events in the unresolved spectra of massive, young extragalactic star cluster…
In the last decade, a new kind of stellar systems has been established that shows properties in between those of globular clusters (GCs) and early-type dwarf galaxies. These so-called ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) have masses in the range 10^6 to 10^8 M_sun and half-light radii of 10-100 pc. The most massive UCDs known to date are predominantly metal-rich and reside in the cores of nearby galaxy clusters. The question arises whether UCDs are just the most massive globular clusters in rich globular cluster systems? Although UCDs and `normal' GCs form a continuous sequence in several param…
The leading method for the determination of relevant stellar population parameters of unresolved extragalactic Globular Clusters is through the study of their integrated spectroscopy, where Balmer line-strength indices are considered to be age sensitive. Previously, a splitting in the highly optimised spectral line-strength index H$β_o$ was observed in a sample of Galactic globular clusters at all metallicities resulting in an apparent "upper branch" and "lower branch" of globular clusters in the H$β_o$ - [MgFe] diagram. This was suggested to be caused by the presence of hot Blue straggler sta…
High resolution integrated light (IL) spectroscopy provides detailed abundances of distant globular clusters whose stars cannot be resolved. Abundance comparisons with other systems (e.g. for chemical tagging) require understanding the systematic offsets that can occur between clusters, such as those due to uncertainties in the underlying stellar population. This paper analyses high resolution IL spectra of the Galactic globular clusters 47 Tuc, M3, M13, NGC 7006, and M15 to (1) quantify potential systematic uncertainties in Fe, Ca, Ti, Ni, Ba, and Eu and (2) identify the most stable abundance…
Globular clusters (GCs) have been at the heart of many longstanding questions in many sub-fields of astronomy and, as such, systematic identification of GCs in external galaxies has immense impacts. In this study, we take advantage of M87's well-studied GC system to implement supervised machine learning (ML) classification algorithms - specifically random forest and neural networks - to identify GCs from foreground stars and background galaxies using ground-based photometry from the Canada-France-Hawai'i Telescope (CFHT). We compare these two ML classification methods to studies of "human-sele…
Studies based on Hubble Space Telescope ($HST$) photometry in F275W, F336W, and F438W have shown that the incidence and complexity of multiple populations (MPs) in Globular Clusters (GCs) depend on cluster mass. This result, however, is based on nearby, low-reddening Galactic GCs, for which we can obtain accurate F275W photometry. In this work we exploit $HST$ photometry in F336W, F438W, and F814W to characterize MPs in 68 Galactic and extragalactic GCs by using the pseudo-color $C_{F336W,F438W,F814W}$, which is more efficient in terms of observation time than the pseudo-color $C_{F275W,F336W,…
Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) have masses of about 100 to 100,000 solar masses. They remain elusive. Observing IMBHs in present-day globular clusters (GCs) would validate a formation channel for seed black holes in the early universe and inform event predictions for gravitational wave facilities. Reaching a large number of GCs per galaxy is key, as models predict that only a few percent will have retained their gravitational-wave fostering IMBHs. Related, many galaxies will need to be examined to establish a robust sample of IMBHs in GCs. These needs can be meet by using a next-generat…
Globular clusters (GCs) are powerful tracers of the galaxy assembly process, and have already been used to obtain a detailed picture of the progenitors of the Milky Way. Using the E-MOSAICS cosmological simulation of a (34.4 Mpc)$^3$ volume that follows the formation and co-evolution of galaxies and their star cluster populations, we develop a method to link the origin of GCs to their observable properties. We capture this complex link using a supervised deep learning algorithm trained on the simulations, and predict the origin of individual GCs (whether they formed in the main progenitor or w…

We present the preliminary results of an image-subtraction analysis of the Galactic globular cluster M79 (NGC 1904), as well as a new investigation of the variable star population in NGC 1851. Both M79 and NGC 1851 have been previously associated with the Canis Major overdensity, which has been suggested to have an extragalactic origin. We found 6 new RR Lyrae in M79, and also recovered 3 previously known RR Lyrae. The average period of the 5 ab-type RR Lyrae is 0.68 ~ d, corresponding to an Oosterhoff II classification -- which is unusual, though not unprecedented, for systems of extragalacti…
We summarize some observational comparison concerning the features of globular clusters (GCs) population in connection to the evolution of King models. We also make a comparison with some extragalactic GCs systems, in order to underline the effects of the main body on the dynamical evolution.
In a previous paper we found that the Globular Clusters of our Galaxy lie around a line in the log(Re), SBe, log(sigma) parameter space, with a moderate degree of scatter and remarkable axi-symmetry. This implies the existence of a purely photometric scaling law obtained by projecting such a line onto the log(Re), SBe plane. Such photometric quantities are readily available for large samples of clusters, as opposed to stellar velocity dispersion data. We study a sample of 129 Galactic and extragalactic clusters on such photometric plane in the V-band. We look for a linear relation between SBe …
Globular clusters (GCs) are old massive star clusters that serve as `fossils' of galaxy formation. The advent of Gaia observatory has enabled detailed kinematics studies of the Galactic GCs and revolutionized our understanding of the connections between GC properties and galaxy assembly. However, lack of kinematic measurements of extragalactic GCs limits the sample size of GC systems that we can fully study. In this work, we present a model for GC formation and evolution, which includes positional and kinematic information of individual GCs by assigning them to particles in the Illustris TNG50…
We investigate archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/SBC F140LP observations of NGC~1399 to search for evidence of multiple stellar populations in extragalactic globular clusters. Enhanced FUV populations are thought to be indicators of He-enhanced second generation populations in globular clusters, specifically extreme/blue horizontal branch stars. Out of 149 globular clusters in the field of view, 58 have far ultraviolet (FUV) counterparts with magnitudes brighter than 28.5. Six of these FUV-deteced globular clusters are also detected in X-rays, including one ultraluminous X-ray source ($L_X >…

NGC 2419 is one of the remotest star clusters in the Milky Way halo and its exact nature is yet unclear: While it has traits reminiscent of a globular cluster (GC), its large radius and suggestions of an abundance spread have fueled the discussion about its origin in an extragalactic environment, possibly the remnants of the accretion of a dwarf galaxy. Here, we present first results from deep intermediate-band photometry of NGC 2419, which enables us to search for chemical (light element) abundance variations, metallicity spreads, and thus multiple stellar populations through well calibrated …
NGC3201 is a globular cluster (GC) which shows very peculiar kinematic characteristics including an extreme radial velocity and a highly retrograde orbit, strongly suggesting an extraGalactic origin. Our aims are to study NGC3201 in the context of multiple populations (MPs), hoping to constrain possible candidates for the self-enrichment by studying the chemical abundance pattern, as well as adding insight into the origin of this intriguing cluster. We present a detailed chemical abundance analysis of eight red giant branch (RGB) stars using high resolution spectroscopy. We measured 29 element…
Nova rates have now been measured for more than a dozen galaxies spanning a wide range of Hubble types. When normalized to the infrared K-band luminosity of the galaxy, the luminosity-specific nova rates typically fall in the range of 1-3 novae per year per 10^10 solar luminosities in K, and do not vary significantly across the Hubble sequence. Preliminary nova rates are presented for three Virgo ellipticals (M49, M84, and M87) with differing globular cluster specific frequencies. No dependence of the luminosity-specific nova rate on globular cluster specific frequency was found. Photometric a…
We present the WiFeS Atlas of Galactic Globular cluster Spectra, a library of integrated spectra of Milky Way and Local Group globular clusters. We used the WiFeS integral field spectrograph on the Australian National University 2.3 m telescope to observe the central regions of 64 Milky Way globular clusters and 22 globular clusters hosted by the Milky Way's low mass satellite galaxies. The spectra have wider wavelength coverage (3300 Å to 9050 Å) and higher spectral resolution (R = 6800) than existing spectral libraries of Milky Way globular clusters. By including Large and Small Magellanic C…
We determine the elemental abundances of nine red giant stars belonging to Palomar 14 (Pal 14). Pal 14 is an outer halo globular cluster (GC) at a distance of \sim 70 kpc. Our abundance analysis is based on high-resolution spectra and one-dimensional stellar model atmospheres. We derived the abundances for the iron peak elements Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, the α-elements O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, the light odd element Na, and the neutron-capture elements Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Eu, Dy, and Cu. Our data do not permit us to investigate light element (i.e., O to Mg) abundance variations. The neutron-capture el…
Two recent empirical developments in the study of extragalactic globular cluster (GC) populations are the color-magnitude relation of the blue GCs (the "blue tilt") and the nonlinearity of the dependence of optical GC colors on metallicity. The color-magnitude relation, interpreted as a mass-metallicity relation, is thought to be a consequence of self-enrichment. Nonlinear color-metallicity relations have been shown to produce bimodal color distributions from unimodal metallicity distributions. We simulate GC populations including both a mass-metallicity scaling relation and nonlinear color-me…
It is widely accepted that individual Galactic globular clusters harbor two coeval generations of stars, the first one born with the `standard' alpha-enhanced metal mixture observed in field Halo objects, the second one characterized by an anticorrelated CN-ONa abundance pattern overimposed on the first generation, alpha-enhanced metal mixture. We have investigated with appropriate stellar population synthesis models how this second generation of stars affects the integrated spectrum of a typical metal rich Galactic globular cluster, like 47Tuc. Our main conclusions are: 1) the age-sensitive B…
Globular clusters are both primary fossils of galactic evolution and formation and are ideal laboratories for constraining the evolution of low-mass and metal-poor stars. RR Lyrae and type II Cepheid variables are low-mass, radially pulsating stars that trace old-age stellar populations. These stellar standard candles in globular clusters are crucial for measuring their precise distances and, in turn, absolute ages, and for the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale. Herein, the evolutionary stages of RR Lyrae and type II Cepheids are discussed, and their pulsation properties, includi…
This review summarises the main properties of Young Massive Clusters (YMCs), including their population properties, particularly focusing on extragalactic cluster samples. We discuss potential biases and caveats that can affect the construction of cluster samples and how incompleteness effects can result in erroneous conclusions regarding the long term survival of clusters. In addition to the luminosity, mass and age distributions of the clusters, we discuss the size distribution and profile evolution of the clusters. We also briefly discuss the stellar populations within YMCs. The final part …
The study of ages, helium mass fraction (Y) and chemical composition of globular clusters in dwarf galaxies is important for understanding the physical conditions at the main evolutionary stages of the host galaxies and for constraining the build-up histories of large galaxies. We present the analysis of integrated-light spectra of 8 extragalactic and 20 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) using our population synthesis method. We calculate synthetic spectra of GCs according to the defined stellar mass functions using model atmospheres and stellar parameters ($[Fe/H]$, $T_{eff}$, and $log g$) set…
It is widely accepted that individual Galactic globular clusters harbor two coeval generations of stars, the first one born with the `standard' $α$-enhanced metal mixture observed in field Halo objects, the second one characterized by an anticorrelated CN-ONa abundance pattern overimposed on the first generation, $α$-enhanced metal mixture. We have investigated with appropriate stellar population synthesis models how this second generation of stars affects the integrated spectrum of a typical metal rich Galactic globular cluster, like 47\,Tuc, focusing our analysis on the widely used Lick-type…
We present a multi-facility study of the optical spectrum of the extragalactic globular cluster RZ2109, which hosts a bright black hole X-ray source. The optical spectrum of RZ2109 shows strong and very broad [O III]λλ4959,5007 emission in addition to the stellar absorption lines typical of a globular cluster. We use observations over an extended period of time to constrain the variability of these [O III] emission lines. We find that the equivalent width of the lines is similar in all of the datasets; the change in L[O III]λ5007 is \ltsim 10% between the first and last observations, which wer…
We investigate the number and type of pulsars that will be discovered with the low-frequency radio telescope LOFAR. We consider different search strategies for the Galaxy, for globular clusters and for other galaxies. We show that a 25-day all-sky Galactic survey can find approximately 900 new pulsars, probing the local pulsar population to a deep luminosity limit. For targets of smaller angular size such as globular clusters and galaxies many LOFAR stations can be combined coherently, to make use of the full sensitivity. Searches of nearby northern-sky globular clusters can find new low lumin…
We use our integrated SDSS photometry for 96 globular clusters in $g$ and $z$, as well as $r$ and $i$ photometry for a subset of 56 clusters, to derive the integrated colour-metallicity relation (CMR) for Galactic globular clusters. We compare this relation to previous work, including extragalactic clusters, and examine the influence of age, present-day mass function variations, structural parameters and the morphology of the horizontal branch on the relation. Moreover, we scrutinise the scatter introduced by foreground extinction (including differential reddening) and show that the scatter in…
Zwicky Transient Facility and Globular Clusters: the gr-Band Period-Luminosity Relations for Mira Variables at Maximum Light and Their Applications to Local Galaxies
Recent spectroscopy on the globular cluster (GC) system of M31 with unprecedented precision witnessed a clear bimodality in absorption-line index distributions of old GCs. Such division of extragalactic GCs, so far asserted mainly by photometric color bimodality, has been viewed as the presence of merely two distinct metallicity subgroups within individual galaxies and forms a critical backbone of various galaxy formation theories. Given that spectroscopy is a more detailed probe into stellar population than photometry, the discovery of index bimodality may point to the very existence of dual …
The discovery both through spectroscopy and photometry of multiple stellar populations in Galactic globular clusters, and in Magellanic Clouds' massive intermediate-age and old clusters, has led to a major change in our views about the formation of these objects. To date, none of the proposed scenarios is able to explain quantitatively all chemical patterns observed in individual clusters, and an extension of the study of multiple populations to resolved extragalactic massive clusters beyond the Magellanic Clouds would be welcome, for it would enable to investigate and characterize the presenc…
Globular clusters (GCs) are bright objects that span a wide range of galactocentric distances, and are thus probes of the structure of dark matter (DM) haloes. In this work, we explore whether the projected radial profiles of GCs can be used to infer the structural properties of their host DM haloes. We use the simulated GC populations in a sample of 166 central galaxies from the $(34.4~\rm cMpc)^3$ periodic volume of the E-MOSAICS project. We find that more massive galaxies host stellar and GC populations with shallower density profiles that are more radially extended. In addition, the metal-…
We investigate the early evolution of two distinct populations of low-mass stars in globular clusters under the influence of primordial gas expulsion driven by supernovae to study if this process can increase the fraction of second generation stars at the level required by observations. We analyse N-body models that take into account the effect of primordial gas expulsion. We divide the stars into two populations which mimic the chemical and dynamical properties of stars in globular clusters so that second generation stars start with a more centrally concentrated distribution. The main effect …
The analysis of pseudo-colour diagrams, the so-called chromosome maps, of Galactic globular clusters (GCs) permits to classify them into type I and type II clusters. Type II GCs are characterized by an above-the-average complexity of their chromosome maps and some of them are known to display star-to-star variations of slow neutron-capture reaction elements including iron. This is at the basis of the hypothesis that type II GCs may have an extragalactic origin and were subsequently accreted by the Milky Way. We performed a Principal Component Analysis to explore possible correlations among var…
Globular clusters (GCs) effectively produce dynamically-formed low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). Observers detect ~100 times more LMXBs per stellar mass in GCs compared to stars in the fields of galaxies. It has also been observationally established that metal-rich GCs are about 3 times more likely to contain an X-ray source than their metal-poor counterparts. Recent observations have shown that this ratio holds in extragalactic GCs for all bright X-ray sources with Lx between 2X10^{37} and 5X10^{38} erg/s. In this Letter, we propose that the observed metallicity dependence of LMXBs in extragal…
Information on globular clusters (GC) formation mechanisms can be gathered by studying the chemical signature of the multiple populations that compose these stellar systems. In particular, we are investigating the anticorrelations among O, Na, Al, and Mg to explore the influence of cluster mass and environment on GCs in the Milky Way and in extragalactic systems. We present here the results obtained on NGC 6139 which, on the basis of its horizontal branch morphology, had been proposed to be dominated by first-generation stars. In our extensive study based on high resolution spectroscopy, the f…
We present a comprehensive multiwavelength photometric analysis of the innermost (3x3 square kpc) 110 globular clusters (GCs) of M87. Their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) were built taking advantage of new ground-based high resolution near-IR imaging aided by adaptive optics at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) combined with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ultraviolet--optical archival data. These GC SEDs are among the best photometrically sampled extragalactic GC SEDs. To compare with our SEDs we constructed equally sampled SEDs of Milky Way GCs. Using both these Milky Way cluster templates a…
Chemical abundances are presented for 25 M31 globular clusters (GCs), based on moderately high resolution (R = 22, 500) H-band integrated light spectra from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). Infrared spectra offer lines from new elements, of different strengths, and at higher excitation potentials compared to the optical. Integrated abundances of C, N, and O are derived from CO, CN, and OH molecular features, while Fe, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, and Ti abundances are derived from atomic features. These abundances are compared to previous results from the optical,…
We present the abundance analysis for a sample of 18 red giant branch stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 4147 based on medium and high resolution spectra. This is the first extensive spectroscopic study of this cluster. We derive abundances of C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Y, Ba, and Eu. We find a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.84+-0.02 and an alpha-enhancement of +0.38+-0.05 (errors on the mean), typical of halo globular clusters in this metallicity regime. A significant spread is observed in the abundances of light elements C, N, O, Na, and Al. In particular we found a Na-…
The present work explores the origin of the formation of star clusters in our Galaxy and in Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) through simulated H-R diagrams and compare those with observed star clusters. The simulation study produces synthetic H-R diagrams by Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique using star formation history (SFH), luminosity function (LF), abundance of heavy metal (Z) and a big library of isochrones as basic inputs and compares them with observed H-R diagrams of various star clusters. The distance based comparison between those two diagrams is carried out through two dimension…
Observed mass-to-light ratios (M/L) of metal-rich globular clusters (GCs) disagree with theoretical predictions. This discrepancy is of fundamental importance since stellar population models provide the stellar masses that underpin most of extragalactic astronomy, near and far. We have derived radial velocities for 1,622 stars located in the centres of 59 Milky Way GCs - twelve of which have no previous kinematic information - using integral-field unit data from the WAGGS project. Using N-body models, we then determine dynamical masses and M/L ratios for the studied clusters. Our sample includ…
We present high spatial resolution, far ultraviolet (FUV) F140LP observations of 12 massive globular clusters in M 31 obtained using the ACS/SBC on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These observations resolve the cluster profiles to scales similar to their core radii and enable the study of the spatial distribution of blue and extreme horizontal branch (HB) stars, which dominate the emission in the F140LP images. We confirm that some of these clusters have excess FUV emission, suggesting additional hot populations beyond those expected by canonical single stellar populations models. We find no…
The observed characteristics of globular cluster (GC) systems, such as metallicity distributions, are commonly used to place constraints on galaxy formation models. However, obtaining reliable metallicity values is particularly difficult because of our limited means to obtain high quality spectroscopy of extragalactic GCs. Often, `color--metallicity relations' are invoked to convert easier-to-obtain photometric measurements into metallicities, but there is no consensus on what form these relations should take. In this paper we make use of multiple photometric datasets and iron metallicity valu…
Recent observations of globular clusters (GCs) suggest that elemental abundance variations may exist between first-generation (1G) stars. We propose that metal abundance ('metallicity') spreads within GC forming giant molecular clouds (GMCs) can influence the iron abundances of future cluster members. To investigate this, we use original hydrodynamical simulations to model GMC formation in a high redshift dwarf galaxy. Our simulations self-consistently model physical processes such as stellar feedback, dust formation and destruction, and molecular gas formation on dust grains, making them well…
(ABRIDGED) The origin of the globular cluster (GC) NGC3201 is under debate. Its retrograde orbit points to an extragalactic origin, but no further chemical evidence supports this idea. Light-element chemical abundances are useful to tag GCs and can be used to shed light on this discussion. We aim to derive CN and CH band strengths for red giant stars in NGC3201 and compare these with photometric indices and high-resolution spectroscopy and discuss in the context of GC chemical tagging. We found three groups in the CN-CH distribution. A main sequence (S1), a secondary less-populated sequence (S…
High-resolution {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} imaging observations show that the radial distribution of the field-decontaminated sample of 162 'blue straggler' stars (BSs) in the $11.7^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ Gyr-old Large Magellanic Cloud cluster Hodge 11 exhibits a clear bimodality. In combination with their distinct loci in color--magnitude space, this offers new evidence in support of theoretical expectations that suggest different BS formation channels as a function of stellar density. In the cluster's color--magnitude diagram, the BSs in the inner 15$"$ (roughly corresponding to the cluster's core…
