A new unstructured, massively parallel code dedicated to low temperature plasmas, AVIP, is presented to simulate plasma discharges in interaction with combustion. The plasma species are modeled in a drift-diffusion formulation and the Poisson equation is solved consistently with the charged species. Plasma discharges introduce stiff source terms on the reactive Navier-Stokes equations and Riemann solvers, more robust than the schemes available in AVBP, have been implemented in AVIP and reported back in AVBP to solve the reactive Navier-Stokes equations. The validation of all the numerical schemes is carried out in this paper where numerous validation cases are presented for the plasma drift-diffusions equations and the reactive Navier-Stokes equations.
For simulating laser-plasma interactions, we developed a parallel, multi-dimensional, fully relativistically particle-in-cell (PIC) code, named YUNIC. The core algorithm is introduced, including field solver, particle pusher, field interpolation, and current interpolation. In addition to the classical electromagnetic interaction in plasmas, nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production are also implemented based on Monte-Carlo methods to study quantum electrodynamics (QED) processes. We benchmark YUNIC against theories and other PIC codes through several typical case…
The document describes a numerical algorithm for plasms and fluids by the Lagrange method, in which the spatial meshes follow the plasma and fluid behavior. Through the mesh wall the plasma and the fluid do not escape. The 3D Lagrange code is originally designed to simulate a Gold cone plasma, which is relevant to confine an imploding fuel in the cone in inertial confinement fusion. However, the 3D Lagrange code would be applied to simulate plasmas and fluids, which are not deformed seriously. The 3D code is designed in the spatial Cartesian coordinate (x, y, z), and employs the compressible f…
Ray tracing codes are useful to study the electromagnetic wave propagation and absorption in the geometrical optics approximation. In magnetized fusion plasma community, most ray tracing codes assume the plasma density and temperature be functions of the magnetic flux and study waves only inside the last closed flux surface, which are sufficient for the present day tokamak. However, they are difficult to be used for configurations with open magnetic field line plasmas, such as mirror machine and field-reversed-configuration (FRC). We develop a ray tracing code in cylindrical coordinates $(r,ϕ,…
Recently, a comparison of six codes for streamer discharge simulations were performed in [1]. In this comment, we discuss about the big differences between the results obtained by the different codes using the same deterministic model, and raise questions on the convergence of the codes and the minimum spatial resolution that are required for a converged results.
We present a novel implementation of a Monte Carlo particle-following code for solving the distribution function of minority species in fusion plasmas, called ASCOT5, and verify it using theoretical results for neoclassical transport. The code has been developed from ground up with an OpenMP-MPI hybrid paradigm to take full advantage of current and next generation many-core CPUs with multithreading and SIMD operations. Up to 6-fold increase in performance is demonstrated compared to a previous version of the code which only utilizes MPI. The physics model of the code is comprehensively validat…
A new version of GBS (Ricci et al. Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 54, 124047, 2012; Halpern et al. J. Comput. Phys. 315, 388-408, 2016; Paruta et al. Phys. Plasmas 25, 112301, 2018) is described. GBS is a three-dimensional, flux-driven, global, two-fluid turbulence code developed for the self-consistent simulation of plasma turbulence and kinetic neutral dynamics in the tokamak boundary. In the new version presented here, the simulation domain is extended to encompass the whole plasma volume, avoiding an artificial boundary with the core, hence retaining the core-edge-SOL interplay. A new toroid…
The document describes a numerical algorithm to simulate plasmas and fluids in the 3 dimensional space by the Euler method, in which the spatial meshes are fixed to the space. The plasmas and fluids move through the spacial Euler mesh boundary. The Euler method can represent a large deformation of the plasmas and fluids. On the other hand, when the plasmas or fluids are compressed to a high density, the spatial resolution should be ensured to describe the density change precisely. The present 3D Euler code is developed to simulate a nuclear fusion fuel ignition and burning. Therefore, the 3D E…
For the simulation of disruptions in tokamak fusion plasmas, a fluid model describing the evolution of relativistic runaway electrons and their interaction with the background plasma is presented. The overall aim of the model is to self-consistently describe the nonlinear coupled evolution of runaway electrons (REs) and plasma instabilities during disruptions. In this model, the runaway electrons are considered as a separate fluid species in which the initial seed is generated through the Dreicer source, which eventually grows by the avalanche mechanism (further relevant source mechanisms can …
A heat flux deposition code is a very useful tool for the design of plasma-facing components. The classical cosine model representative of the convective parallel heat flux was coded within the standard finite element code of the CEA Castem 2000. Two perturbations to the idealised magnetic surfaces were taken into account: the Shafranov shift and the ripple of the toroidal magnetic field. The calculation scheme -- named Tokaflu -- was confronted to previous computations on bottom modular limiters and to experiments on the inner first wall. The code was used to optimise the shape of future plas…
PoPe (Projection on Proper elements) for code control: verification, numerical convergence and reduced models. Application to plasma turbulence simulations
Proton radiography is used in various high-energy-density (HED) plasma experiments. In this paper, we describe a Monte Carlo and ray-tracing simulation tool called MPRAD that can be used for modeling the deflection of proton beams in arbitrary three dimensional electromagnetic fields, as well as the diffusion of the proton beams by Coulomb scattering and stopping power. The Coulomb scattering and stopping power models in cold matter and fully ionized plasma are combined using interpolation. We discuss the application of MPRAD in a few setups relevant to HED plasma experiments where the plasma …
The dissipation mechanism of the magnetic energy in turbulent collisionless space and astrophysical plasmas is still not well understood. Its investigation requires efficient kinetic simulations of the energy transfer in collisionless plasma turbulence. In this respect, hybrid-kinetic simulations, in which ions are treated as particles and electrons as an inertial fluid, have begun to attract a significant interest recently. Hybrid-kinetic models describe both ion- and electron scale processes by ignoring electron kinetic effects so that they are computationally much less demanding compared to…
For the self-consistent description of various plasma sources operated in the low-pressure (nonlocal, kinetic) regime, the Particle-In-Cell simulation approach, combined with the Monte Carlo treatment of collision processes (PIC/MCC), has become an important tool during the past decades. PIC/MCC simulation codes have been developed and maintained by many research groups, some of these codes are available to the community as freeware resources. While this computational approach has already been present for a number of decades, the rapid evolution of the computing infrastructure makes it increas…
Electromagnetic turbulence is addressed in tokamak and stellarator plasmas with the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell codes ORB5 [E. Lanti et al, Comp. Phys. Comm, vol. 251, 107072 (2020)] and EUTERPE [V. Kornilov et al, Phys. Plasmas, vol. 11, 3196 (2004)]. The large-aspect-ratio tokamak, down-scaled ITER, and Wendelstein 7-X geometries are considered. The main goal is to increase the plasma beta, the machine size, the ion-to-electron mass ratio, as well as to include realistic-geometry features in such simulations. The associated numerical requirements and the computational cost for the ca…
We review the results of the 1st Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) Light Sources Code Comparison Workshop, which was held online on 3rd November 2020. The goal of this workshop was to provide a platform for specialists in EUV light source plasma modeling to benchmark and validate their numerical codes using well-defined case studies. Eight institutions spanning four countries contributed data to the workshop. Two topics were addressed, namely (i) the atomic kinetics and radiative properties of tin plasmas under EUV-generating conditions and (ii) laser absorption in a fully ionized, one-dimensional hyd…
In this work, the FALCON code is adopted for illustrating the features of shear Alfvén and continuous spectra in toroidal fusion plasmas. The FALCON codes employs the local Floquet analysis discussed in [Phys. of Plasmas \textbf{26} (8), 082502 (2019)] for computing global structures of continuous spectra in general toroidal geometry. As particular applications, reference equilibria for the Divertor Tokamak Test and ASDEX Upgrade plasmas are considered. In particular, we illustrate the importance of mode polarization for recognizing the physical relevance of the various branches of the continu…
This paper describes a new code for simulating astrophysical plasmas that solves a hybrid model composed of gyrokinetic ions (GKI) and an isothermal electron fluid (ITEF) [A. Schekochihin et al., Astrophys. J. Suppl. \textbf{182}, 310 (2009)]. This model captures ion kinetic effects that are important near the ion gyro-radius scale while electron kinetic effects are ordered out by an electron-ion mass ratio expansion. The code is developed by incorporating the ITEF approximation into {\tt AstroGK}, an Eulerian $δf$ gyrokinetics code specialized to a slab geometry [R. Numata et al., J. Compute.…
