We have established the detailed phase diagram of the prototypical deep eutectic solvent ethaline (ethylene glycol / choline chloride 2:1) as a function of the hydration level, in the bulk state and confined in the nanochannels of mesostructured porous silica matrices MCM-41 and SBA-15, with pore radii $R_P$ = 1.8 nm and 4.15 nm. For neat and moderately hydrated DESs, freezing was avoided and glassforming solutions were formed in all cases. For mass fraction of water above a threshold value $W_g'\approx30\%$, crystallization occurred and led to the formation of a maximally-freeze concentrated DES solution. In this case, extremely deep melting depressions were attained in the confined states, due to the combination of confinement and cryoscopic effects. These phenomena were analyzed quantitatively, based on an extended version of the classical Gibbs-Thomson and Raoult thermodynamic approaches. In this framework, the predicted values of the water chemical activity in the confined systems were shown to systematically deviate from those of the bulk counterparts. The origin of this striking observation is discussed with respect to thermodynamic anomalies of water in the 'no-man's land' and to the probable existence of specific nanostructures in DES solutions when manipulated in nanochannels or at interfaces with solids.
We have performed a thorough examination of the reorientational relaxation dynamics and the ionic charge transport of three typical deep eutectic solvents, ethaline, glyceline and reline by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Our experiments cover a broad temperature range from the low-viscosity liquid down to the deeply supercooled state, allowing to investigate the significant influence of glassy freezing on the ionic charge transport in these systems. In addition, we provide evidence for a close coupling of the ionic conductivity in these materials to reorientational dipolar motions which sh…
The spectroscopy and structural dynamics of a deep eutectic mixture (KSCN/acetamide) with varying water content is investigated from 2D IR (with the C-N stretch vibration of the SCN$^-$ anions as the reporter) and THz spectroscopy. Molecular dynamics simulations correctly describe the non-trivial dependence of both spectroscopic signatures depending on water content. For the 2D IR spectra, the MD simulations relate the steep increase in the cross relaxation rate at high water content to parallel alignment of packed SCN$^-$ anions. Conversely, the non-linear increase of the THz absorption with …
We have established a comprehensive study of the molecular dynamics of the menthol-thymol mixture, the prototype of the new class of type V deep eutectic solvents. Dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry were combined to assess the dipolar relaxation and glassy dynamics over an extended range of timescales (10-6-10 2 s) and for eleven different compositions including the two pure constituents. Positive deviations from ideal mixing approximation were demonstrated for both the solvent dielectric strength and the glass transition. They support the idea that preferential H-bo…
In this work, we present the first example of the self-assembly of phospholipid monolayers at the interface between air and an ionic solvent. Deep eutectic solvents are a novel class of environmentally friendly non-aqueous room temperature liquids with tunable properties, that have wide ranging potential applications and are capable of promoting the self-assembly of surfactant molecules. We use a chemically-consistent Bayesian modelling of X-ray and neutron reflectometry measurements to show that these monolayers broadly behave as they do on water. This method allows for the monolayer structur…
We have studied the ionic conductivity and the dipolar reorientational dynamics of aqueous solutions of a prototypical deep eutectic solvent (DES), ethaline, by using dielectric spectroscopy on a broad range of frequency (MHz-Hz) and for temperatures ranging from 128 to 283 K. The fraction of water in the DES was varied systematically to cover different regimes, starting from pure DES and its water-in-DES mixtures to the diluted electrolyte solutions. Depending on these parameters, different physical states were examined, including low viscosity liquid, supercooled viscous liquid, amorphous so…
Lithium-salt-based deep eutectic solvents, where the only cation is Li+, are promising candidates as electrolytes in electrochemical energy-storage devices like batteries. We have performed broadband dielectric spectroscopy on three such systems, covering a broad temperature and dynamic range that extends from the low-viscosity liquid around room temperature down to the glassy state approaching the glass-transition temperature. We detect a relaxational process that can be ascribed to dipolar reorientational dynamics and exhibits the clear signatures of glassy freezing. We find that the tempera…
Polarizable force fields are gradually becoming a common choice for ionic soft matter, in particular for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The CL&Pol force field introduced in 2019 is the first general, transferable and polarizable force field for MD simulations of different types of DESs. The original formulation contains, however, some problems that appear in simulations of ethaline and may also have a broader impact. First, the originally proposed atomic diameter parameters are unbalanced, resulting in too weak interactions between…
We performed rheological measurements of the typical deep eutectic solvents (DESs) glyceline, ethaline, and reline in a very broad temperature and dynamic range, extending from the low-viscosity to the high-viscosity supercooled-liquid regime. We find that the mechanical compliance spectra can be well described by the random free-energy barrier hopping model, while the dielectric spectra on the same materials involve significant contributions arising from reorientational dynamics. The temperature-dependent viscosity and structural relaxation time, revealing non-Arrhenius behavior typical for g…
Using nonequilibrium Langevin dynamics simulations of an electrolyte with explicit solvent particles, we investigate the effect of hydrodynamic interactions on the power spectrum of ionic nanopore currents. At low frequency, we find a power-law dependence of the power spectral density, with an exponent depending on the ion density. Surprisingly, however, the exponent is not affected by the presence of the neutral solvent particles. We conclude that hydrodynamic interactions do not affect the shape of the power spectrum in the frequency range studied.
Over the last couple of decades, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as novel alternatives to ionic liquids that are extensively used in synthesis of innovative materials, metal processing, catalysis, etc. However, their usage is limited, primarily because of the large viscosity and poor conductivity. Therefore, an understanding of the molecular origin of these properties is essential to improve their industrial applicability. Here, we present the report of the nanoscopic diffusion mechanism of acetamide in a DES synthesized with lithium perchlorate as studied using neutron scattering a…
The conformational behavior of a polymer in a critical binary solvent confined in a porous medium is studied. The size of the polymer in bulk, which is mainly governed by the correlation length of the solvent density fluctuations, depends on the proximity to the critical point of the binary mixture. We find that in contrast to the bulk behavior, the conformational properties of the polymer in a porous medium depends strongly on the pore size. The latter controls the correlation length of the solvent density fluctuations and thus determines the polymer size.
Within a dipolar Poisson-Boltzmann theory including electrostatic correlations, we consider the effect of explicit solvent structure on solvent and ion partition confined to charged nanopores. We develop a relaxation scheme for the solution of this highly non-linear integro-differential equation for the electrostatic potential. The scheme is an extension of the approach previously introduced for simple planes (S. Buyukdagli and Ralf Blossey, J. Chem. Phys. 140, 234903 (2014)) to nanoslit geometry. We show that the reduced dielectric response of solvent molecules at the membrane walls gives ris…
Nanoscopic pores are used in various systems to attract nanoparticles. In general the behaviour is a result of two types of interactions: the material specific affinity and the solvent-mediated influence also called the depletion force. The latter is more universal but also much more complex to understand since it requires modeling both the nanoparticle and the solvent. Here, we employed classical density functional theory to determine the forces acting on a nanoparticle near a nanoscopic pore as a function of its hydrophobicity and its size. A simple capillary model is constructed to predict …

The filling behavior of a room temperature solvent, perfluoromethylcyclohexane, in approximately 20 nm nanoporous alumina membranes was investigated in situ with small angle x-ray scattering. Adsorption in the pores was controlled reversibly by varying the chemical potential between the sample and a liquid reservoir via a thermal offset, $Δ$T. The system exhibited a pronounced hysteretic capillary filling transition as liquid was condensed into the nanopores. These results are compared with Kelvin-Cohan theory, with a modified Derjaguin approximation, as well as with predictions by Cole and Sa…
Understanding the stabilities of proteins in nanopores requires a quantitative description of confinement induced interactions between amino acid side chains. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the nature of interactions between the side chain pairs ALA-PHE, SER-ASN and LYS-GLU in bulk water and in water-filled nanopores. The temperature dependence of the bulk solvent potentials of mean force and the interaction free energies in cylindrical and spherical nanopores is used to identify the corresponding entropic and enthalpic components. The entropically stabilized hydrophobic intera…
Accurate modeling of diffusive transport of nanoparticles across nanopores is a particularly challenging problem. The reason is that for such narrow pores the large surface-to-volume ratio amplifies the relevance of the nanoscopic details and of the effective interactions at the interface with pore walls. Close to the pore wall, there is no clear separation between the length scales associated with molecular interactions, layering of the solvent at the interface with the pore and the particle size. Therefore, the standard hydrodynamic arguments may not apply and alternative solutions to determ…
Urea at sufficiently high concentration unfolds the secondary structure of proteins leading to denaturation. In contrast, Choline Chloride (ChCl) and urea, in 1:2 molar ratio form a deep eutectic mixture, a liquid at room temperature and protect proteins from denaturation. In order to get a microscopic picture of this phenomenon, we perform extensive all-atom molecular dynamics simulations on a model protein HP-36. Based on our calculation of Kirkwood-Buff integrals, we analyze the relative accumulation of these osmolytes around the protein. Additional insights are drawn from the analyses of t…
We use Metropolis Monte Carlo and umbrella sampling to calculate the free energies of interaction of two methane molecules and their charged derivatives in cylindrical water-filled pores. Confinement strongly alters the interactions between the nonpolar solutes, and completely eliminates the solvent separated minimum (SSM) that is seen in bulk water. The free energy profiles show that the methane molecules are either in contact or at separations corresponding to the diameter and the length of the cylindrical pore. Analytic calculations that estimate the entropy of the solutes, which are solvat…
