In this paper, we focus on decoding nonbinary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in Galois fields of characteristic two via the proximal alternating direction method of multipliers (proximal-ADMM). By exploiting Flanagan/Constant-Weighting embedding techniques and the decomposition technique based on three-variables parity-check equations, two efficient proximal-ADMM decoders for nonbinary LDPC codes are proposed. We show that both of them are theoretically guaranteed convergent to some stationary point of the decoding model and either of their computational complexities in each proximal-ADMM iteration scales linearly with LDPC code's length and the size of the considered Galois field. Moreover, the decoder based on the Constant-Weight embedding technique satisfies the favorable property of codeword symmetry. Simulation results demonstrate their effectiveness in comparison with state-of-the-art LDPC decoders.
We analyze the asymptotic performance of nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes built on the general linear group, when the transmission takes place over the binary erasure channel. We propose an efficient method to derive an upper bound to the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) threshold for nonbinary LDPC codes, and observe that the MAP performance of regular LDPC codes improves with the alphabet size. We then consider nonbinary SC-LDPC codes. We show that the same threshold saturation effect experienced by binary SC-LDPC codes occurs for the nonbinary codes…
In this paper we are concerned with the asymptotic analysis of nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) ensembles defined over GL$\left(2^{m}\right)$ (the general linear group of degree $m$ over GF$\left(2\right)$). Our purpose is to prove threshold saturation when the transmission takes place on the binary erasure channel (BEC). To this end, we establish the duality rule for entropy for nonbinary variable-node (VN) and check-node (CN) convolutional operators to accommodate the nonbinary density evolution (DE) analysis. Based on this, we construct the explicit forms of th…
We analyze nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes built on the general linear group for transmission over the binary erasure channel. We prove threshold saturation of the belief propagation decoding to the potential threshold, by generalizing the proof technique based on potential functions recently introduced by Yedla et al.. The existence of the potential function is also discussed for a vector sparse system in the general case, and some existence conditions are developed. We finally give density evolution and simulation results for several nonbinary SC-LDPC cod…
In this paper, we present a low-complexity joint detection-decoding algorithm for nonbinary LDPC codedmodulation systems. The algorithm combines hard-decision decoding using the message-passing strategy with the signal detector in an iterative manner. It requires low computational complexity, offers good system performance and has a fast rate of decoding convergence. Compared to the q-ary sum-product algorithm (QSPA), it provides an attractive candidate for practical applications of q-ary LDPC codes.
We analyze the asymptotic performance of nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) code ensembles defined over the general linear group on the binary erasure channel. In particular, we prove threshold saturation of belief propagation decoding to the so called potential threshold, using the proof technique based on potential functions introduced by Yedla \textit{et al.}, assuming that the potential function exists. We rewrite the density evolution of nonbinary SC-LDPC codes in an equivalent vector recursion form which is suited for the use of the potential function. We then…

Its main contents are as follows: first, exploiting the decomposition technique based on the three-variables check equation, we formulate the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding problem approximately to a non-convex quadratic program; second, an efficient algorithm based on the proximal-ADMM technique is proposed to solve the formulated QP problem. Exploiting the QP problem's inherent structures, its variables c…

Linear Programming (LP) decoding is emerging as an attractive alternative to decode Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. However, the earliest LP decoders proposed for binary and nonbinary LDPC codes are not suitable for use at moderate and large code lengths. To overcome this problem, Vontobel et al. developed an iterative Low-Complexity LP (LCLP) decoding algorithm for binary LDPC codes. The variable and check node calculations of binary LCLP decoding algorithm are related to those of binary Belief Propagation (BP). The present authors generalized this work to derive an iterative LCLP deco…
Nonbinary LDPC codes have shown superior performance close to the Shannon limit. Compared to binary LDPC codes of similar lengths, they can reach orders of magnitudes lower error rate. However, multitude of design freedoms of nonbinary LDPC codes complicates the practical code and decoder design process. Fast simulations are critically important to evaluate the pros and cons. Rapid prototyping on FPGA is attractive but takes significant design efforts due to its high design complexity. We propose a high-throughput reconfigurable hardware emulation architecture with decoder and peripheral co-de…
This paper is concerned with the application of nonbinary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) codes to binary input inter-symbol interference (ISI) channels. Two low-complexity joint detection/decoding algorithms are proposed. One is referred to as max-log-MAP/X-EMS algorithm, which is implemented by exchanging soft messages between the max-log-MAP detector and the extended min-sum (EMS) decoder. The max-log-MAP/X-EMS algorithm is applicable to general NB-LDPC codes. The other one, referred to as Viterbi/GMLGD algorithm, is designed in particular for majority-logic decodable NB-LDPC codes. The …
Linear Programming (LP) decoding of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes has attracted much attention in the research community in the past few years. LP decoding has been derived for binary and nonbinary linear codes. However, the most important problem with LP decoding for both binary and nonbinary linear codes is that the complexity of standard LP solvers such as the simplex algorithm remains prohibitively large for codes of moderate to large block length. To address this problem, two low-complexity LP (LCLP) decoding algorithms for binary linear codes have been proposed by Vontobel and Ko…
We present an analysis, under iterative decoding, of coset LDPC codes over GF(q), designed for use over arbitrary discrete-memoryless channels (particularly nonbinary and asymmetric channels). We use a random-coset analysis to produce an effect that is similar to output-symmetry with binary channels. We show that the random selection of the nonzero elements of the GF(q) parity-check matrix induces a permutation-invariance property on the densities of the decoder messages, which simplifies their analysis and approximation. We generalize several properties, including symmetry and stability from …
The goal of the paper is to study specific properties of nonbinary low-density parity-check (NB LDPC) codes when used in coded modulation systems. The paper is focused on the practically important NB LDPC codes over extensions of the Galois field GF$(2^m)$ with $m \le 6$ used with QAM signaling. Performance of NB QC LDPC coded transmission strongly depends on mapping of nonbinary symbols to signal constellation points. We obtain a random coding bound on the maximum-likelihood decoding error probability for an ensemble of random irregular NB LDPC codes used with QAM signaling for specific symbo…
This paper presents an efficient quadratic programming (QP) decoder via the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) technique, called QP-ADMM, for binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Its main contents are as follows: first, we relax maximum likelihood (ML) decoding problem to a non-convex quadratic program. Then, we develop an ADMM solving algorithm for the formulated non-convex QP decoding model. In the proposed QP-ADMM decoder, complex Euclidean projections onto the check polytope are eliminated and variables in each updated step can be solved analytically in parallel. M…
In this letter, we develop an efficient linear programming (LP) decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We first relax the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding problem to a LP problem by using check-node decomposition. Then, to solve the resulting LP problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) technique. In addition, the feasibility analysis of the proposed algorithm is presented. Furthermore, through exploiting the sparsity and orthogonality structures of the LP problem, the computational complexity of …
In this paper, we devote to devise a non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder in Galois fields of characteristic two ($\mathbb{F}_{2^q}$) via the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) technique. Through the proposed bit embedding technique and the decomposition technique of the three-variables parity-check equation, an efficient ADMM decoding algorithm for non-binary LDPC codes is proposed. The computation complexity in each ADMM iteration is roughly $\mathcal{O}(nq)$, which is significantly lower than the existing LDPC decoders. Moreover, we prove that the proposed deco…
A new method for low-complexity near-maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the additive white Gaussian noise channel is presented. The proposed method termed belief-propagation--list erasure decoding (BP-LED) is based on erasing carefully chosen unreliable bits performed in case of BP decoding failure. A strategy of introducing erasures into the received vector and a new erasure decoding algorithm are proposed. The new erasure decoding algorithm, called list erasure decoding, combines ML decoding over the BEC with list decoding applied if the ML decoder…
Linear Programming (LP) decoding of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes has attracted much attention in the research community in the past few years. The aim of LP decoding is to develop an algorithm which has error-correcting performance similar to that of the Sum-Product (SP) decoding algorithm, while at the same time it should be amenable to mathematical analysis. The LP decoding algorithm has also been extended to nonbinary linear codes by Flanagan et al. However, the most important problem with LP decoding for both binary and nonbinary linear codes is that the complexity of standard LP …
We examine LDPC codes decoded using linear programming (LP). Four contributions to the LP framework are presented. First, a new method of tightening the LP relaxation, and thus improving the LP decoder, is proposed. Second, we present an algorithm which calculates a lower bound on the minimum distance of a specific code. This algorithm exhibits complexity which scales quadratically with the block length. Third, we propose a method to obtain a tight lower bound on the fractional distance, also with quadratic complexity, and thus less than previously-existing methods. Finally, we show how the fu…
The Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) decoding of Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes has received many attentions due to its excellent performance at the error floor region. In this paper, we develop a parameter-free decoder based on Linear Program (LP) decoding by replacing the binary constraint with the intersection of a box and an $\ell_p$ sphere. An efficient $\ell_2$-box ADMM is designed to handle this model in a distributed fashion. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our decoder attains better adaptability to different Signal-to-Noise Ratio and channels.
In this paper, we develop efficient decoders for non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). We apply ADMM to two decoding problems. The first problem is linear programming (LP) decoding. In order to develop an efficient algorithm, we focus on non-binary codes in fields of characteristic two. This allows us to transform each constraint in $\mathbb{F}_{2^m}$ to a set of constraints in $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ that has a factor graph representation. Applying ADMM to the LP decoding problem results in two types of non-trivial sub-routines…
Linear programming (LP) decoding for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes proposed by Feldman et al. is shown to have theoretical guarantees in several regimes and empirically is not observed to suffer from an error floor. However at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), LP decoding is observed to have worse error performance than belief propagation (BP) decoding. In this paper, we seek to improve LP decoding at low SNRs while still achieving good high SNR performance. We first present a new decoding framework obtained by trying to solve a non-convex optimization problem using the alternating di…
A quantum stabilizer code over GF$(q)$ corresponds to a classical additive code over GF$(q^2)$ that is self-orthogonal with respect to a symplectic inner product. We study the decoding of quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over binary finite fields GF$(q=2^l)$ by the sum-product algorithm, also known as belief propagation (BP). Conventionally, a message in a nonbinary BP for quantum codes over GF$(2^l)$ represents a probability vector over GF$(2^{2l})$, inducing high decoding complexity. In this paper, we explore the property of the symplectic inner product and show that scalar mess…
We propose an approach for optimizing nonbinary (NB) quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes. This approach combines constructing of base parity-check matrices by simulated annealing and labeling the obtained base matrices aimed at maximizing the so-called generalized girth of the NB LDPC code Tanner graph. Tightened random coding bounds based on the average binary spectra for ensembles of "almost regular" NB LDPC codes of finite lengths over extensions of the binary Galois field are derived. The simulated FER performance of the sum-product BP decoding of "almost regular" NB QC-LDPC block codes are prese…
A framework for linear-programming (LP) decoding of nonbinary linear codes over rings is developed. This framework facilitates linear-programming based reception for coded modulation systems which use direct modulation mapping of coded symbols. It is proved that the resulting LP decoder has the 'maximum-likelihood certificate' property. It is also shown that the decoder output is the lowest cost pseudocodeword. Equivalence between pseudocodewords of the linear program and pseudocodewords of graph covers is proved. It is also proved that if the modulator-channel combination satisfies a particul…
Minimum distance is an important parameter of a linear error correcting code. For improved performance of binary Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, we need to have the minimum distance grow fast with n, the codelength. However, the best we can hope for is a linear growth in dmin with n. For binary LDPC codes, the necessary and sufficient conditions on the LDPC ensemble parameters, to ensure linear growth of minimum distance is well established. In the case of non-binary LDPC codes, the structure of logarithmic weight codewords is different from that of binary codes. We have carried out a p…
We study the performance of nonbinary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over finite integer rings over two channels that arise from the Lee metric. The first channel is a discrete memory-less channel (DMC) matched to the Lee metric. The second channel adds to each codeword an error vector of constant Lee weight, where the error vector is picked uniformly at random from the set of vectors of constant Lee weight. It is shown that the marginal conditional distributions of the two channels coincide, in the limit of large block length. Random coding union bounds on the block error probability a…

Inspired by the recent advances in deep learning (DL), this work presents a deep neural network aided decoding algorithm for binary linear codes. Based on the concept of deep unfolding, we design a decoding network by unfolding the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-penalized decoder. In addition, we propose two improved versions of the proposed network. The first one transforms the penalty parameter into a set of iteration-dependent ones, and the second one adopts a specially designed penalty function, which is based on a piecewise linear function with adjustable slopes. Numer…
When binary linear error-correcting codes are used over symmetric channels, a relaxed version of the maximum likelihood decoding problem can be stated as a linear program (LP). This LP decoder can be used to decode error-correcting codes at bit-error-rates comparable to state-of-the-art belief propagation (BP) decoders, but with significantly stronger theoretical guarantees. However, LP decoding when implemented with standard LP solvers does not easily scale to the block lengths of modern error correcting codes. In this paper we draw on decomposition methods from optimization theory, specifica…
