The paper is devoted to problems at the intersection of formal group theory, the theory of Hirzebruch genera, and the theory of elliptic functions.
The elliptic function of level N determines the elliptic genus of level N as a Hirzebruch genus. It is known that the elliptic function of level N is a specialization of the Krichever function that determines the Krichever genus. The Krichever function is the exponential of the universal Buchstaber formal group.
In this work we describe the rings of coefficients of specializations of universal Buchstaber formal groups that correspond to the elliptic genus of level N for N = 2,3,4,5, and 6.
We construct a Thom class in complex equivariant elliptic cohomology extending the equivariant Witten genus. This gives a new proof of the rigidity of the Witten genus, which exhibits a close relationship to recent work on non-equivariant orientations of elliptic spectra.
We define a new elliptic genus psi on the complex bordism ring. With coefficients in Z[1/2], we prove that it induces an isomorphism of the complex bordism ring modulo the ideal which is generated by all differences P(E)-P(E*) of projective bundles and their duals onto a polynomial ring on 4 generators in degrees 2, 4, 6 and 8. As an alternative geometric description of psi, we prove that it is the universal genus which is multiplicative in projective bundles over Calabi-Yau 3-folds. With the help of the q-expansion of modular forms we will see that for a complex manifold M, the value psi(M) i…
Given a height $\leq 2$ Landweber exact $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring $E$ whose homotopy is concentrated in even degrees, we show that any complex orientation of $E$ which satisfies the Ando criterion admits a unique lift to an $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-complex orientation $\mathrm{MU} \to E$. As a consequence, we give a short proof that the level $n$ elliptic genus lifts uniquely to an $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-complex orientation $\mathrm{MU} \to \mathrm{tmf}_1 (n)$ for all $n \geq 2$.
The first purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between equivariant elliptic genera and orbifold elliptic genera. We apply the character theory of Hopkins et. al. to the Borel-equivariant genus associated to the sigma orientation of Ando-Hopkins-Strickland to define an orbifold genus for certain total quotient orbifolds and supersingular elliptic curves. We show that our orbifold genus is given by the same sort of formula as the orbifold ``two-variable'' genus of Dijkgraaf et al. In the case of a finite cyclic orbifold group, we use the characteristic series for the two-variable…
We prove several results about the vanishing of the elliptic genus on positively curved Spin manifolds with logarithmic symmetry rank. The proofs are based on the rigidity of the elliptic genus and Kennard's improvement of the Connectedness Lemma for transversely intersecting, totally geodesic submanifolds.
We explain the relationship between the sigma orientation and Witten genus on the one hand and the two-variable elliptic genus on the other. We show that if E is an elliptic spectrum, then the Theorem of the Cube implies the existence of canonical SU-orientation of the associated spectrum of Jacobi forms. In the case of the elliptic spectrum associated to the Tate curve, this gives the two-variable elliptic genus. We also show that the two-variable genus arises as an instance of the circle-equivariant sigma orientation.
In the paper we study two types of relations: a one is between the elliptic genus of Calabi-Yau manifolds and Jacobi modular forms, another one is between the second quantized elliptic genus, Siegel modular forms and Lorentzian Kac-Moody Lie algebras. We also determine the structure of the graded ring of the weak Jacobi forms with integral Fourier coefficients. It gives us a number of applications to the theory of elliptic genus and of the second quantized elliptic genus.
In this paper we calculate the elliptic genus of certain complete intersections in products of projective spaces. We show that it is equal to the elliptic genus of the Landau-Ginzburg models that are, according to Hori and Vafa, mirror partners of these complete intersections. This provides additional evidence of the validity of their construction.
Multi-fan is an analogous notion of fan. As a fan is associated to a toric variety a multi-fan is associated to a torus orbifold. Orbifold elliptic class and orbifold elliptic genus are defined for a triple of a multi-fan, a set of generating integral vectors of one dimensional cones and a $\mathbb{Q}$ divisor. They are shown to behave functorially with respect to birational morphisms between these triples. The result may be considered as a combinatorial or topological analogue of the main result of Borisov and Libgober, McKay correspondence for elliptic genera, Ann. of Math., 161 (2005).
Several independent articles have observed that the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus has an important feature, which the author calls -1-phenomenon and tells us that the coefficients of the Taylor expansion of the $χ_y$-genus at $y=-1$ have explicit expressions. Hirzebruch's original $χ_y$-genus can be extended towards two directions: the pluri-case and the case of elliptic genus. This paper contains two parts in which we investigate the -1-phenomena in these two generalized cases respectively and show that in each case there exists a -1-phenomenon in a suitable sense. Our main results in the first part…
The circle-equivariant spectrum MString_C is the equivariant analogue of the cobordism spectrum MU<6> of stably almost complex manifolds with c_1=c_2=0. Given a rational elliptic curve C, the second author has defined a ring T-spectrum EC representing the associated T-equivariant elliptic cohomology. The core of the present paper is the construction, when C is a complex elliptic curve, of a map of ring T-spectra MString_C --> EC which is the rational equivariant analogue of the sigma orientation of Ando-Hopkins-Strickland. We support this by a theory of characteristic classes for calculation, …
We provide a differential cocycle model for elliptic cohomology with complex coefficients and use analytic methods to construct a cocycle representative for the Witten class in this language. Our motivation stems from the conjectural connection between 2-dimensional field theories and elliptic cohomology originally due to G. Segal and E. Witten. The specifics of our constructions are informed by the work of S. Stolz and P. Teichner on super Euclidean field theories and K. Costello's construction of the Witten genus using perturbative quantization. As a warm-up, we prove analogous results for s…
The rigidity theorem of Witten-Bott-Taubes-Hirzebruch tells us that, if the circle group acts on a closed almost complex (or more generally unitary) manifold whose first Chern class is divisible by a positive integer N greater than 1, then its equivariant elliptic genus of level N is rigid. Applying this to a non-singular compact toric variety, we see that its elliptic genus of level N is rigid if its first Chern class is divisible by N. But, using a vanishing theorem of Hirzebruch, we can show moreover that the genus actually vanishes. In this note we shall extend this result to torus manifol…
Equivariant localization techniques give a rigorous interpretation of the Witten genus as an integral over the double loop space. This provides a geometric explanation for its modularity properties. It also reveals an interplay between the geometry of double loop spaces and complex analytic elliptic cohomology. In particular, we identify a candidate target for the elliptic Bismut-Chern character.
We define the algebraic elliptic cohomology theory coming from Krichever's elliptic genus as an oriented cohomology theory on smooth varieties over an arbitrary perfect field. We show that in the algebraic cobordism ring with rational coefficients, the ideal generated by differences of classical flops coincides with the kernel of Krichever's elliptic genus. This generalizes a theorem of B. Totaro in the complex analytic setting.
Three types of rigidity theorem for orbifold elliptic genus of level N are proved. The first type deals with the case where N is relatively prime to the orders of all isotropy groups. If the top exterior power of the tangent bundle is divisible by N in the Picard group of orbifold line bundles, then the ofbifold genus of level N suitably modified has rigidity property with respect to compact connected group actions. The second type deals with the divisibility within the Picard group of genuine line bundles. In this case the orbifold elliptic genus itself has rigidity property.
This paper defines a new genus, the Cayley plane genus. By definition it is the universal multiplicative genus for oriented Cayley plane bundles. The main result (Theorem 2) is that it factors (tensor Q) through the product of the Ochanine elliptic genus and the Witten genus---revealing a synergy between these two genera---and that its image is the homogeneous coordinate ring Q[Kum,HP^2,HP^3,CaP^2]/(CaP^3).(HP^3,CaP^2-(HP^2)^2) of the union of the curve of Ochanine elliptic genera and the surface of Witten genera meeting with multiplicity 2 at the point CaP^2=HP^3=HP^2=0 corresponding to the Â…
We generalize the definition of orbifold elliptic genus, and introduce orbifold genera of chromatic level h, using h-tuples rather than pairs of commuting elements. We show that our genera are in fact orbifold invariants, and we prove integrality results for them. If the genus arises from an H-infinity-map into the Morava-Lubin-Tate theory E_h, then we give a formula expressing the orbifold genus of the symmetric powers of a stably almost complex manifold M in terms of the genus of M itself. Our formula is the p-typical analogue of the Dijkgraaf-Moore-Verlinde-Verlinde formula for the orbifold…
