The low energy $S$-matrix which describes non-relativistic scattering arising from finite-range forces has UV/IR symmetries that are hidden in the corresponding effective field theory (EFT) action. It is shown that the $S$-matrix symmetries are manifest as geometric symmetries of the RG flow of coupling constants in the EFT action in both three and two spatial dimensions. An example is given demonstrating that UV/IR symmetry breaking in the $S$-matrix implies strong constraints on the RG flow of the coefficients of the corresponding symmetry-breaking operators in the EFT.
Lam suggested that the PMNS matrix (or at least some of its elements) can be predicted by embedding the residual symmetry of the leptonic mass terms into a bigger symmetry. We analyze the possibility that the residual symmetries consist of involution generators only and explore how Lam's idea can be implemented.
We explore a flavor structure of quarks in the standard model under the assumption that flavor symmetries exist in a theory beyond the standard model, and chase after their properties, using a bottom-up approach. We reacknowledge that a flavor-symmetric part of Yukawa coupling matrix can be realized by a rank-one matrix and a democratic-type one occupies a special position, based on Dirac's naturalness.
Here we propose an $A_4$ flavour symmetry model which implies a lower bound on the neutrinoless double beta decay rate, corresponding to an effective mass parameter $M_{ee} \gsim 0.03$ eV, and a direct correlation between the expected magnitude of CP violation in neutrino oscillations and the value of $\sin^2θ_{13}$, as well as a nearly maximal CP phase $δ$.
Following the way proposed recently by Hernandez and Smirnov, we seek possible residual symmetries in the quark sector with a focus on the von Dyck groups. We begin with two extreme cases in which both $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$ or only $θ_{13}$ are set to zero. Then, cases where all the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa parameters are allowed to take nonzero values are explored. The $Z_7$ symmetry is favorable to realize only the Cabibbo angle. On the other hand, larger groups are necessary in order to be consistent with all the mixing parameters. Possibilities of embedding the obtained residual symmetrie…
Based on current experimental results, such as neutrino oscillations and the neutrinoless double beta decays (i.e. data from Super Kamiokande, KamLAND, SNO, etc.), the neutrino mixing matrix can be adequately determined. Though there are still certain parameters that have possibility limits, but based on the current experimental results it is possible to construct a general form of neutrino mass matrix. Starting from this general form of the neutrino mass matrix we put certain conditions in the context of the seesaw mechanism model to determine the possible pattern of the neutrino mass matrix …
The s-wave nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering matrix ($S$-matrix) exhibits UV/IR symmetries which are hidden in the effective field theory (EFT) action and scattering amplitudes, and which explain some generic features of the phase shifts. These symmetries offer clarifying interpretations of existing pionless EFT expansions, and suggest starting points for novel expansions. The leading-order (LO) $S$-matrix obtained in the pionless EFT with scattering lengths treated exactly is shown to have a UV/IR symmetry which leaves the sum of s-wave phase shifts invariant. A new scheme, which treats effecti…
The approximately symmetric form of the PMNS matrix suggests that there could exist a hidden symmetry which makes the PMNS matrix different from the CKM matrix for quarks. In literature, all the proposed fully symmetric textures exhibit an explicit $μ-τ$ symmetry in addition to other symmetries which may be different for various textures. Observing obvious deviations of the practical PMNS matrix elements from those in the symmetric textures, there must be a mechanism to distort the symmetry. It might be due to existence of light sterile neutrinos. In this work, we study the case of the Tribima…
Augmenting the Standard Model by three right-handed neutrinos allows for an anomaly-free gauge group extension G_max = U(1)_(B-L) x U(1)_(L_e-L_mu) x U(1)_(L_mu-L_tau). While simple U(1) subgroups of G_max have already been discussed in the context of approximate flavor symmetries, we show how two-zero textures in the right-handed neutrino Majorana mass matrix can be enforced by the flavor symmetry, which is spontaneously broken very economically by singlet scalars. These zeros lead to two vanishing minors in the low-energy neutrino mass matrix after the seesaw mechanism. This study may provid…
The Standard Model does not explain the hierarchy problem. Before the discovery of nonzero lepton mixing angle θ13 high hopes in explanation of the shape of the lepton mixing matrix were combined with non abelian symmetries. Nowadays, assuming one Higgs doublet, it is unlikely that this is still valid. Texture zeroes, that are combined with abelian symmetries, are intensively studied. The neutrino mass matrix is a natural way to study such symmetries.
The flavour neutrino puzzle is often addressed by considering neutrino mass matrices $m$ with a certain number of vanishing entries ($m_{ij}=0$ for some values of the indices), since a reduction in the number of free parameters increases the predictive power. Symmetries that can enforce textures zero can also enforce a more general type of conditions $f(m_{ij})=0$ with $f$ some function of the matrix elements $m_{ij}$. In this case $m$ can have all entries non-vanishing with no reduction in its predictive power. We classify all generation-dependent $U(1)$ symmetries which, in the presence of t…
We consider two novel scenarios of residual symmetries of the lepton mass matrices. Firstly we assume a Z2 x Z2 symmetry G_ell for the charged-lepton mass matrix and a Z2 symmetry G_nu for the light neutrino mass matrix. With this setting, the moduli of the elements of one column of the lepton mixing matrix are fixed up to a reordering. One may interchange the roles of G_ell and G_nu in this scenario, thereby constraining a row, instead of a column, of the mixing matrix. Secondly we assume a residual symmetry group G_ell \cong Zm (m>2) which is generated by a matrix with a doubly-degenerate ei…
We analyze the possible generalized CP symmetries admitted by the Tri-Bi-Maximal (TBM) neutrino mixing. Taking advantage of these symmetries we construct in a systematic way other variants of the standard TBM ansatz. Depending on the type and number of generalized CP symmetries imposed, we get new mixing matrices, all of which related to the original TBM matrix. One of such "revamped" TBM variants is the recently discussed mixing matrix of arXiv:1806.03367. We also briefly discuss the phenomenological implications following from these mixing patterns.
Neutrino mass sum rules have recently gained again more attention as a powerful tool to discriminate and test various flavour models in the near future. A related question which was not yet discussed fully satisfactorily was the origin of these sum rules and if they are related to any residual or accidental symmetry. We will address this open issue here systematically and find previous statements confirmed. Namely, that the sum rules are not related to any enhanced symmetry of the Lagrangian after family symmetry breaking but that they are simply the result of a reduction of free parameters du…
In this paper, we study residual symmetries in the lepton sector. Our first concern is the symmetry of the charged lepton mass matrix in the basis where the Majorana neutrino mass matrix is diagonal, which is strongly constrained by the requirement that the symmetry group generated by residual symmetries is finite. In a recent work R. M. Fonseca and W. Grimus found that there exists a set of constraint equations that can be completely solved, which is essential in their approach to the classification of lepton mixing matrices that are fully determined by residual symmetries. In this paper, a m…
We show how introducing discrete Abelian flavor symmetries can produce texture zeros in the fermion mass matrices, while preserving the correct relationships with the low-energy data on quark and lepton masses. We outline a procedure for defining texture zeros as suppressed entries in Yukawa matrices. These texture zeros can account for the coexistence of the observed large mixing in atmospheric neutrino oscillations with a hierarchy in the neutrino masses, and offer the possibility of alignment of the quark and squark mass matrices, and thus giving a solution to the supersymmetric flavor prob…
I construct predictive models of neutrino mass and mixing that have fewer parameters, both in the lepton sector and overall, than the default seesaw model. The predictions are theta13=0 and one massless neutrino, with the models having a Z4 or Z2 symmetry and just one extra degree of freedom: one real singlet Higgs field. It has been shown that models with an unbroken family symmetry, and with no Higgs fields other than the Standard Model Higgs doublet produce masses and mixing matrices that have been ruled out by experiment. Therefore, this article investigates the predictions of models with …
A quark and lepton mass matrix model with family symmetries U(3)$\times$O(3) is investigated on the basis of the so-called yukawaon model. In the present model, quarks and leptons are assigned to $(\ell, e^c, u^c) \sim ({\bf 3}, {\bf 3}, {\bf 3}^*)$ of U(3) and $(q, d^c, ν^c) \sim ({\bf 3}, {\bf 3}, {\bf 3})$ of O(3). Then, the neutrino mass matrix is given by $M_ν= m_D M_R^{-1} m_D^T$ with $m_D \propto < Φ_e > $, where the charged lepton mass matrix $M_e$ is given by $M_e = k < Φ_e ><Φ_e^T >$. A merit in considering U(3)$\times$O(3) lies in that we can lower the cutoff scale $Λ$ in the yukawa…
We discuss consequences of combining the effective $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry of the tri-bimaximal neutrino mass matrix with the CP symmetry. Imposition of such generalized $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetries leads to predictive neutrino mass matrices determined in terms of only four parameters and leads to non-zero $θ_{13}$ and maximal atmospheric mixing angle and CP violating phase. It is shown that an effective generalized $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry of the mass matrix can arise from the $A_4$ symmetry with specific vacuum alignment. The neutrino mass matrix in the considered model has only three real pa…
We classify all possible implementations of an abelian symmetry in the two-Higgs-doublet model with fermions. We identify those symmetries which are consistent with non-vanishing quark masses and a CKM matrix which is not block-diagonal. Our analysis takes us from a plethora of possibilities down to 246 relevant cases, requiring only 34 distinct matrix forms. We show that applying Z_n with n \geq 4 to the scalar sector leads to a continuous U(1) symmetry in the whole Lagrangian. Finally, we address the possibilities of spontaneous CP violation and of natural suppression of the flavour changing…
Assuming that the leptonic mixing matrix is given in first approximation by the tribimaximal form we deduce some consequences with regard to the finite symmetries that may be applied in the minimal lepton sector of the electroweak theory.
We explore how the seesaw sector in neutrino mass models may be constrained through symmetries to be completely determined in terms of low-energy mass, mixing angle and CP-violating phase observables. The key ingredients are intra-family symmetries to determine the neutrino Dirac mass matrix in terms of the charged-lepton or quark mass matrices, together with inter-family or flavor symmetries to determine diagonalization matrices. Implications for leptogenesis and collider detection of heavy neutral leptons are discussed. We show that leptogenesis can succeed in small regions of parameter spac…
In this paper, we impose a magic symmetry on the neutrino mass matrix $m_ν$ with universal four-zero texture and diagonal reflection symmetries. Due to the magic symmetry, the MNS matrix has trimaximal mixing inevitably. Since the lepton sector has only six free parameters, physical observables of leptons are all determined from the charged leptons masses $m_{ei}$, the neutrino mass differences $Δm_{i1}^{2}$, and the mixing angle $θ_{23}$. This scheme predicts $\sin θ_{13} = 0.149$, that is almost equal to the latest best fit, as a function of the lepton masses $m_{e, μ}$ and the mass differen…
We adopt in this thesis a new approach by assuming a set of $H$-charges that give rise to a self-consistent model of $R$-parity breaking and baryon-number violation. As a consequence of our $H$-charge assignments, it is not possible to generate a Majorana mass term for left-handed neutrinos. However, a neutrino Dirac matrix can be built after the introduction of right-handed neutrinos with proper $H$-charges. We also show that by adding a second flavon field with fractional charge, it is possible to build a Majorana neutrino mass matrix. In both cases an anarchical matrix. The consequences for…
In this follow up of arXiv:1812.04663 we analyze the generalized CP symmetries of the charged lepton mass matrix compatible with the complex version of the Tri-Bi-Maximal (TBM) lepton mixing pattern. These symmetries are used to `revamp' the simplest TBM \textit{Ansatz} in a systematic way. Our generalized patterns share some of the attractive features of the original TBM matrix and are consistent with current oscillation experiments. We also discuss their phenomenological implications both for upcoming neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.
