We present a second paper related to the analyses of high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of the magnetic cataclysmic variable AE Aquarii. We focus our efforts on the study of the emission lines and their radial velocities. We detect a sinusoidal behaviour, in several of the observing runs, with variable amplitudes. Of those runs presented, the velocity curve of 2000 August shows less instability in the emission material. In this case, we obtain K1 = 114 +/- 8 km s-1, which we take as our best value for the radial velocity of the primary. This result is consistent within 2sigma with previously published values obtained using indirect methods. We interpret this consistency as observational evidence of material orbiting the rapidly rotating primary star. We present a Doppler tomography study, which shows that the H alpha emission is primarily concentrated within a blob in the lower left quadrant, a structure similar to that predicted by the propeller model. However, for 2000 August, we find the emission centred around the position of the white dwarf, which supports the possibility of the K1 value of this run of being a valid approximation of the orbital motion of the white dwarf.
The magnetic cataclysmic variable HU Aquarii displayed pronounced modulations of its eclipse timing. These were intensively modeled and discussed in recent years in the framework of planets orbiting the binary or the Applegate effect. No scenario yielded a unique and satisfactory interpretation of the data. Here we present 26 new eclipse epochs obtained between 2014 and 2018. The steep and continuous decrease of the orbital period observed in the time interval 2010 - 2013 has slowed down sometimes before mid 2016. The new slope in the (O-C)-diagram of eclipse arrival times will further constra…
The eclipsing binary LL Aqr consists of two late-type stars in an eccentric orbit with a period of 20.17 d. We use an extensive light curve from the SuperWASP survey augmented by published radial velocities and UBV light curves to measure the physical properties of the system. The primary star has a mass of 1.167 +/- 0.009 Msun and a radius of 1.305 +/- 0.007 Rsun. The secondary star is an analogue of the Sun, with a mass and radius of 1.014 +/- 0.006 Msun and 0.990 +/- 0.008 Rsun respectively. The system shows no signs of stellar activity: the upper limit on spot-induced rotational modulation…
Between May 2016 and September 2018, the intermediate polar (IP) FO Aquarii exhibited two distinct low states and one failed low state. We present optical spectroscopy of FO Aquarii throughout this period, making this the first detailed study of an accretion disc during a low state in any IP. Analysis of these data confirm that the low states are the result of a drop in the mass transfer rate between the secondary star and the magnetic white dwarf primary, and are characterised by a decrease in the system's brightness coupled with a change of the system's accretion structures from an accretion…
Gamma Cas analog sources are a subset of Be stars that emit intense and hard X-ray emission. Two competing ideas for their X-ray production mechanism are (a) the magnetic activities of the Be star and its disk and (b) the accretion from the Be star to an unidentified compact object. Among such sources, Pi Aqr plays a pivotal role as it is one of the only two spectroscopic binaries observed for many orbital cycles and one of the three sources with X-ray brightness sufficient for detailed X-ray spectroscopy. Bjorkman et al. (2002) estimated the secondary mass > 2.0 Mo with optical spectroscopy, …
FO Aquarii, an asynchronous magnetic cataclysmic variable (intermediate polar) went into a low-state in 2016, from which it slowly and steadily recovered without showing dwarf nova outbursts. This requires explanation since in a low-state, the mass-transfer rate is in principle too low for the disc to be fully ionized and the disc should be subject to the standard thermal and viscous instability observed in dwarf novae. We investigate the conditions under which an accretion disc in an intermediate polar could exhibit a luminosity drop of 2 magnitudes in the optical band without showing outburs…
Archival observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) at frequencies between 1.4 GHz and 43 GHz of the 6.6-day O6.5-7+O5.5-6 binary Cyg OB2 #5 over 20 years are re-examined. The aim is to determine the location and character of its known variable radio emission. The radio emission consists of a primary component associated with the binary, and a non-thermal source (NE), $0.8" to the NE. This work reveals that NE shows no evidence of variation demonstrating that the variable emission arises in the primary component. With NE constant, the radio flux from the primary can now be well determined fo…
We present the discovery of a substellar companion on a wide orbit around the ~2.5 Msun star HIP 78530, which is a member of the 5 Myr-old Upper Scorpius association. We have obtained follow-up imaging over two years and show that the companion and primary share common proper motion. We have also obtained JHK spectroscopy of the companion and confirm its low surface gravity, in accordance with the young age of the system. A comparison with Drift-Phoenix synthetic spectra indicates an effective temperature of 2800+/-200 K and a comparison with template spectra of young and old dwarfs indicates …

The Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems monitored 51 subarcsecond binary systems to evaluate whether tertiary companions as small as Jovian planets orbited either the primary or secondary stars, perturbing their otherwise smooth Keplerian motions. Six binaries are presented that show evidence of substellar companions orbiting either the primary or secondary star. Of these six systems, the likelihoods of two of the detected perturbations to represent real objects are considered to be "high confidence", while the remaining four systems are less certain and will requir…
Using spectroscopic radial velocities with the APOGEE instrument and Gaia distance estimates, we demonstrate that Kepler-503b, currently considered a validated Kepler planet, is in fact a brown-dwarf/low-mass star in a nearly circular 7.2-day orbit around a subgiant star. Using a mass estimate for the primary star derived from stellar models, we derive a companion mass and radius of $0.075\pm0.003 \ M_{\odot}$ ($78.6\pm3.1 \ M_{Jup}$) and $0.099^{+0.006}_{-0.004}\ R_{\odot}$ ($0.96^{+0.06}_{-0.04}\ R_{Jup}$), respectively. Assuming the system is coeval, the evolutionary state of the primary in…
The A5V star Alcor has an M3-M4 dwarf companion, as evidenced by a novel astrometric technique. Imaging spectroscopy combined with adaptive optics coronagraphy allowed for the detection and spectrophotometric characterization of the point source at a contrast of ~6 J- and H-band magnitudes and separation of 1" from the primary star. The use of an astrometric pupil plane grid allowed us to determine the projected separations between the companion and the coronagraphically occulted primary star to <=3 milliarcsecond precision at two observation epochs. Our measurements demonstrate common paralla…
SuWt2 is a planetary nebula (PN) consisting of a bright ionized thin ring seen nearly edge-on. It has a bright (V=12) central star, too cool to ionize the PN, which we discovered to be an eclipsing binary. A spectrum from IUE did not reveal a UV source. We present extensive ground-based photometry and spectroscopy of the central binary collected over the ensuing two decades, resulting in the determination that the orbital period of the eclipsing pair is 4.9 d, and consists of two nearly identical A1 V stars, each of mass ~2.7 M_sun. The physical parameters of the A stars, combined with evoluti…
We analyze the effect of companion stars on the bulk density of 29 planets orbiting 15 stars in the Kepler field. These stars have at least one stellar companion within 2", and the planets have measured masses and radii, allowing an estimate of their bulk density. The transit dilution by the companion star requires the planet radii to be revised upward, even if the planet orbits the primary star; as a consequence, the planetary bulk density decreases. We find that, if planets orbited a faint companion star, they would be more volatile-rich, and in several cases their densities would become unr…
Cataclysmic variables (CVs) are binaries in which a compact white dwarf accretes material from a low-mass companion star. The discovery of two planets in orbit around the CV HU Aquarii opens unusual opportunities for understanding the formation and evolution of this system. In particular the orbital parameters of the planets constrains the past and enables us to reconstruct the evolution of the system through the common-envelope phase. During this dramatic event the entire hydrogen envelope of the primary star is ejected, passing the two planets on the way. The observed eccentricities and orbi…
We present initial results from a new high-contrast imaging program dedicated to stars that exhibit long-term Doppler radial velocity accelerations (or "trends"). The goal of the TRENDS (TaRgetting bENchmark-objects with Doppler Spectroscopy and) imaging survey is to directly detect and study the companions responsible for accelerating their host star. In this first paper of the series, we report the discovery of low-mass stellar companions orbiting HD 53665, HD 68017, and HD 71881 using NIRC2 adaptive optics (AO) observations at Keck. Follow-up imaging demonstrates association through common …
Most stars form in binaries, and both stars may grow by accreting material from a circumbinary disc onto their personal discs. We suspect that in many cases a wide molecular wind will envelope a collimated atomic jet emanating from close to an orbiting young star. This so-called Circumbinary Scenario is explored here in order to find common identifiable properties. The dynamical set up is studied with three dimensional simulations with chemistry and cooling included. We extract the properties on scales of order 100\,AU and compare to the Co-Orbital Scenario in which the wind and jet sources ar…
Kepler's first major discoveries are two hot objects orbiting stars in its field. These may be the cores of stars that have each been eroded or disrupted by a companion star. The companion, which is the star monitored today, is likely to have gained mass from its now-defunct partner, and can be considered to be a blue straggler. KOI-81 is almost certainly the product of stable mass transfer; KOI-74 may be as well, or it may be the first clear example of a blue straggler created throughthree-body interactions. We show that mass transfer binaries are common enough that Kepler should discover ~10…
Fifty archival radio observations of the supergiant binary Cyg OB2 #5 using the Very Large Array over 20 years are re-examined to determine the location and character of the previously detected variable radio emission. The radio emission from the system consists of a primary component that is associated with the binary, and a non-thermal source (NE) that has been ascribed to a wind-collision region (WCR) between the stellar winds of the binary and that of a B-type star (Star D) to the NE. NE shows no evidence of variation in 23 epochs where it is resolved separately from the primary radio comp…
We report the discovery via radial velocity of a short-period (P = 2.430420 \pm 0.000006 days) companion to the F-type main sequence star TYC 2930-00872-1. A long-term trend in the radial velocities indicates the presence of a tertiary stellar companion with $P > 2000$ days. High-resolution spectroscopy of the host star yields T_eff = 6427 +/- 33 K, log(g) = 4.52 +/- 0.14, and [Fe/H]=-0.04 +/- 0.05. These parameters, combined with the broad-band spectral energy distribution and parallax, allow us to infer a mass and radius of the host star of M_1=1.21 +/- 0.08 M_\odot and R_1=1.09_{-0.13}^{+0.…
Medium resolution spectral analysis of candidate Faint High Latitude Carbon (FHLC) stars from Hamburg/ESO survey has given us the potential to discover objects of rare types. Two primary spectral characteristics of R Coroanae Borealis (RCB) stars are hydrogen deficiency and weaker CN bands relative to C_{2} bands. They are also characterized by their characteristic location in the J-H, H-K plane with respect to cool carbon stars. From a spectral analysis of a sample of 243 candidate FHLC stars, we have discovered a hydrogen-deficient carbon (HdC) star HE 1015-2050, at high Galactic latitude. A…
The eclipsing binary Theta1 Orionis B1, variable star designation BM Ori, is the faintest of the four well-known Trapezium stars at the heart of the Orion Nebula. The primary is a B3 star (~6Msun) but the nature of the secondary (~2Msun) has long been mysterious, since the duration and shape of primary eclipse are inappropriate for ordinary stars. Here we report nearly continuous photometric observations obtained with the MOST satellite over ~4 cycles of the 6.47d binary period. The light curve is of unprecedented quality, revealing a deep, symmetric primary eclipse as well as a clear reflecti…
KIC 8569819 is an eclipsing binary star with an early F primary and G secondary in a 20.85-d eccentric orbit. The primary is a delta Sct - gamma Dor star pulsating in both p modes and g modes. Using 4 years of Kepler Mission photometric data we independently model the light curve using the traditional technique with the modelling code PHOEBE, and we study the orbital characteristics using the new frequency modulation (FM) technique. We show that both methods provide the equivalent orbital period, eccentricity and argument of periastron, thus illustrating and validating the FM technique. In the…
The NASA TESS mission has discovered many transiting planets orbiting bright nearby stars, and high-resolution imaging studies have revealed that a number of these exoplanet hosts reside in binary or multiple star systems. In such systems, transit observations alone cannot determine which star in the binary system actually hosts the orbiting planet. The knowledge of which star the planet orbits is necessary for determining accurate physical properties for the planet, especially its true radius and mean bulk density. We derived the mean stellar densities for the components of 23 binary systems …
We present an analysis of a peculiar supergiant B-type star (VFTS698/Melnick 2/Parker 1797) in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud which exhibits characteristics similar to the broad class of B[e] stars. We analyse optical spectra from the VLT-FLAMES survey, together with archival optical and infrared photometry and X-ray imaging to characterise the system. We find radial velocity variations of around 400 km/s in the high excitation Si IV, N III and He II spectra, and photometric variability of ~0.6 mag with a period of 12.7 days. In addition, we detect long-term photometric va…
We present the first high-resolution spectra for the eclipsing binary V404 Lyr showing $γ$ Dor pulsations, which we use to study its absolute properties. By fitting models to the disentangling spectrum of the primary star, we found that it has an effective temperature of $T_{\rm eff,1}=7,330 \pm 150$ K and a rotational velocity of $v_1\sin$$i=148\pm18$ km s$^{-1}$. The simultaneous analysis of our double-lined radial velocities and the pulsation-subtracted ${\it Kepler}$ data gives us accurate stellar and system parameters of V404 Lyr. The masses, radii, and luminosities are $M_1$ = 2.17$\pm$0…
$τ^{9}$ Eri is a Bp star that was previously reported to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary. Using 17 ESPaDOnS spectropolarimetric (Stokes $V$) observations we identified the weak spectral lines of the secondary component and detected a strong magnetic field in the primary. We performed orbital analysis of the radial velocities of both components to find a slightly eccentric orbit ($e= 0.129$) with a period of $5.95382(2)$ days. The longitudinal magnetic field ($B_\ell$) of the primary was measured from each of the Stokes $V$ profiles, with typical error bars smaller than 10 G. Equivalent …
Both young stars and multi-planet systems are primary objects that allow us to study, understand and constrain planetary formation and evolution theories. We validate the physical nature of two Neptune-type planets transiting TOI-942 (TYC 5909-319-1), a previously unacknowledged young star (50+30-20 Myr) observed by the TESS space mission in Sector 5. Thanks to a comprehensive stellar characterization, TESS light curve modelling and precise radial-velocity measurements, we validated the planetary nature of the TESS candidate and detect an additional transiting planet in the system on a larger …
The short period variable star MG1-688432 has been discovered to exhibit occasional extremely high energy optical outbursts as high as 10^31 joules. Outbursts are typically of several hours duration. These events are often highly structured, resembling sequential associated releases of energy. Twenty years of time sequence photometry is presented, indicating a basic sinusoidal light curve of mean period 6.65d, with some phase shifting and long-term temporal trends in amplitude and mean brightness. Spectroscopy reveals a peculiar star, best resembling a K3 subgiant that has evolved off the main…
We present a study of the relationship between galactic kinematics, flare rates, chromospheric activity, and rotation periods for a volume-complete, nearly all-sky sample of 219 single stars within 15 parsecs and with masses between 0.1$-$0.3 M$_{odot}l$ observed during the primary mission of TESS. We find all stars are consistent with a common value of $α$=1.984 $\pm$ 0.019 for the exponent of the flare frequency distribution. Using our measured stellar radial velocities and Gaia astrometry, we determine galactic UVW space motions. We find 64% of stars are members of the Galactic thin disk, 5…

A black hole candidate orbiting a luminous star in the Large Magellanic Cloud young cluster NGC 1850 ($\sim100$Myr) has recently been reported based on radial velocity and light curve modelling. Subsequently, an alternative explanation has been suggested for the system: a bloated post-mass transfer secondary star (M$_{\rm initial} \sim 4-5M_{\odot}$, M$_{\rm current} \sim 1-2M_{\odot}$) with a more massive, yet luminous companion (the primary). Upon reanalysis of the MUSE spectra, we found that the radial velocity variations originally reported were underestimated ($K_{\rm 2,revised} = 176\pm3…

Context. High contrast imaging is a powerful technique to search for gas giant planets and brown dwarfs orbiting at separation larger than several AU. Around solar-type stars, giant planets are expected to form by core accretion or by gravitational instability, but since core accretion is increasingly difficult as the primary star becomes lighter, gravitational instability would be the a probable formation scenario for yet-to-be-found distant giant planets around a low-mass star. A systematic survey for such planets around M dwarfs would therefore provide a direct test of the efficiency of gra…
The precise radial velocity technique is a cornerstone of exoplanetary astronomy. Astronomers measure Doppler shifts in the star's spectral features, which track the line-of/sight gravitational accelerations of a star caused by the planets orbiting it. The method has its roots in binary star astronomy, and exoplanet detection represents the low-companion-mass limit of that application. This limit requires control of several effects of much greater magnitude than the signal sought: the motion of the telescope must be subtracted, the instrument must be calibrated, and spurious Doppler shifts "ji…
We present SCExAO/CHARIS high-contrast imaging/$JHK$ integral field spectroscopy of $κ$ And b, a directly-imaged low-mass companion orbiting a nearby B9V star. We detect $κ$ And b at a high signal-to-noise and extract high precision spectrophotometry using a new forward-modeling algorithm for (A-)LOCI complementary to KLIP-FM developed by Pueyo (2016). $κ$ And b's spectrum best resembles that of a low-gravity L0--L1 dwarf (L0--L1$γ$). Its spectrum and luminosity are very well matched by 2MASSJ0141-4633 and several other 12.5--15 $M_{\rm J}$ free floating members of the 40 $Myr$-old Tuc-Hor Ass…
