Between May 2016 and September 2018, the intermediate polar (IP) FO Aquarii exhibited two distinct low states and one failed low state. We present optical spectroscopy of FO Aquarii throughout this period, making this the first detailed study of an accretion disc during a low state in any IP. Analysis of these data confirm that the low states are the result of a drop in the mass transfer rate between the secondary star and the magnetic white dwarf primary, and are characterised by a decrease in the system's brightness coupled with a change of the system's accretion structures from an accretion disc-fed geometry to a combination of disc-fed and ballistic stream-fed accretion, and that effects from accretion onto both magnetic poles become detectable. The failed low state only displays a decrease in brightness, with the accretion geometry remaining primarily disc-fed. We also find that the WD appears to be exclusively accretion disc-fed during the high state. There is evidence for an outflow close to the impact region between the ballistic stream and the disc which is detectable in all of the states. Finally, there is marginal evidence for narrow high velocity features in the H$α$ emission line during the low states which may arise due to an outflow from the WD. These features may be evidence of a collimated jet, a long predicted yet elusive feature of cataclysmic variables.
FO Aquarii, an asynchronous magnetic cataclysmic variable (intermediate polar) went into a low-state in 2016, from which it slowly and steadily recovered without showing dwarf nova outbursts. This requires explanation since in a low-state, the mass-transfer rate is in principle too low for the disc to be fully ionized and the disc should be subject to the standard thermal and viscous instability observed in dwarf novae. We investigate the conditions under which an accretion disc in an intermediate polar could exhibit a luminosity drop of 2 magnitudes in the optical band without showing outburs…
We want to study the temporal and spectral behaviour of HU Aqr in the X-ray domain during different accretion states. We obtained spectra and light curves from four different XMM-Newton pointings covering intermediate and low states. The X-ray observations were accompanied with high time resolution photometry obtained with the Optima and ULTRACAM instruments. On two occasions in May 2002 and 2003 HU Aqr was found in an intermediate state with the accretion rate reduced by a factor of 50 compared to earlier high state measurements. X-ray spectra in the intermediate state can be described by a m…
We present photometry of the intermediate polar FO Aquarii obtained as part of the K2 mission using the Kepler space telescope. The amplitude spectrum of the data confirms the orbital period of 4.8508(4) h, and the shape of the light curve is consistent with the outer edge of the accretion disk being eclipsed when folded on this period. The average flux of FO Aquarii changed during the observations, suggesting a change in the mass accretion rate. There is no evidence in the amplitude spectrum of a longer period that would suggest disk precession. The amplitude spectrum also shows the white dwa…
The intermediate polar FO Aquarii (FO Aqr) experienced its first-reported low-accretion states in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and using newly available photographic plates, we identify pre-discovery low states in 1965, 1966, and 1974. The primary focus of our analysis, however, is an extensive set of time-series photometry obtained between 2002 and 2018, with particularly intensive coverage of the 2016-2018 low states. After computing an updated spin ephemeris for the white dwarf (WD), we show that its spin period began to increase in 2014 after having spent 27 years decreasing; no other intermediat…
We report a time-lapse eclipse mapping analysis of B-band time-series of the nova-like variable UU Aqr along a typical stunted outburst in 2002 August. Disc asymmetries rotating in the prograde sense in the eclipse maps are interpreted as a precessing elliptical disc with enhanced emission at periastron. From the disc expansion velocity a disc viscosity alpha_{hot}= 0.2 is inferred. The outburst starts with a 10-fold increase in uneclipsed light, probably arising in an enhanced disc wind; the disc response is delayed by 2 d. The results are inconsistent with the disc instability model and sugg…
Gamma Cas analog sources are a subset of Be stars that emit intense and hard X-ray emission. Two competing ideas for their X-ray production mechanism are (a) the magnetic activities of the Be star and its disk and (b) the accretion from the Be star to an unidentified compact object. Among such sources, Pi Aqr plays a pivotal role as it is one of the only two spectroscopic binaries observed for many orbital cycles and one of the three sources with X-ray brightness sufficient for detailed X-ray spectroscopy. Bjorkman et al. (2002) estimated the secondary mass > 2.0 Mo with optical spectroscopy, …
In 2016 May, the intermediate polar FO~Aqr was detected in a low state for the first time in its observational history. We report time-resolved photometry of the system during its initial recovery from this faint state. Our data, which includes high-speed photometry with cadences of just 2 sec, shows the existence of very strong periodicities at 22.5 min and 11.26 min, equivalent to the spin-orbit beat frequency and twice its value, respectively. A pulse at the spin frequency is also present but at a much lower amplitude than is normally observed in the bright state. By comparing our power spe…

For decades, AE Aquarii (AE Aqr) has been the only cataclysmic variable star known to contain a magnetic propeller: a persistent outflow whose expulsion from the binary is powered by the spin-down of the rapidly rotating, magnetized white dwarf. In 2020, LAMOST-J024048.51+195226.9 (J0240) was identified as a candidate eclipsing AE Aqr object, and we present three epochs of time-series spectroscopy that strongly support this hypothesis. We show that during the photometric flares noted by Thorstensen (2020) (arXiv:2007.09285), the half-width-at-zero-intensity of the Balmer and HeI lines routinel…
Cool evolved stars are known to be significant contributors to the enrichment of the interstellar medium through their dense and dusty stellar winds. High resolution observations of these outflows have shown them to possess high degrees of morphological complexity. We observed the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star EP Aquarii with ALMA in band 6 and VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL in four filters the visible. Both instruments had an angular resolution of 0.025''. These are follow-up observations to the lower-resolution 2016 ALMA analysis of EP Aquarii, which revealed that its wind possesses a nearly face-on…
R Aqr is a symbiotic binary system consisting of a Mira variable with a pulsation period of 387 days and a hot companion which is presumably a white dwarf with an accretion disk. This binary system is the source of a prominent bipolar gaseous outflow. We use high spatial resolution and sensitive images from the Hubble Space Telescope to identify and investigate the different structural components that form the complex morphology of the R Aqr jet . Methods. We present new high-resolution HST WFC3/UVIS narrow-band images of the R Aqr jet obtained in 2013/14 in the light of the [OIII] 5007, [OI] …
The nature of the accreting companion to Mira --- the prototypical pulsating asymptotic giant branch star --- has been a matter of debate for more than 25 years. Here we use a quantitative analysis of the rapid optical brightness variations from this companion, Mira B, which we observed with the Nickel telescope at Lick Observatory, to show that it is a white dwarf (WD). The amplitude of aperiodic optical variations on time scales of minutes to tens of minutes (approximately 0.2 mag) is consistent with that of accreting WDs in cataclysmic variables on these same time scales. It is significantl…
The availability of the unprecedented spectral resolution provided by modern X-ray observatories is opening up new areas for study involving the coupled formation of the continuum emission and the cyclotron absorption features in accretion-powered X-ray pulsar spectra. Previous research focusing on the dynamics and the associated formation of the observed spectra has largely been confined to the single-fluid model, in which the super-Eddington luminosity inside the column decelerates the flow to rest at the stellar surface, while the dynamical effect of gas pressure is ignored. In a companion …
We analyze the accretion properties of 21 low mass T Tauri stars using a dataset of contemporaneous near ultraviolet (NUV) through optical observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and the ground based Small and Medium Aperture Research Telescope System (SMARTS), a unique dataset because of the nearly simultaneous broad wavelength coverage. Our dataset includes accreting T Tauri stars (CTTS) in Taurus, Chamaeleon I, $η$ Chamaeleon and the TW Hydra Association. For each source we calculate the accretion rate by fitting the NUV and optical excesses above t…
The paper describes the modelling of the structure and spectra of the hot accretion spots on the surface of young stars with taking into account departures from LTE for hydrogen and helium. It has been found that the existence of the ram pressure of the in-falling gas at the outer boundary of the hot spot leads to the Stark broadening of the hydrogen line profiles up to FWHM of about 1000 km/s at the considered accretion parameters. It is shown that taking into account departures from LTE for atoms and ions of carbon and oxygen does not lead to noticeable changes in the structure of the hot sp…
We model the post-shock accretion column (PSAC) for intermediate polars (IPs), with parameterizing specific accretion rate between 0.0001 and 100 g cm-2 s-1 and metal abundance between 0.1 and 2 times of solar abundance, and taking into account the gravitational potential and non-equipartition between ions, electrons and ionization degree. We assume the cylinder and dipole as geometry of the PSAC. The PSAC becomes higher against the white dwarf (WD) radius for lower specific accretion rate and more massive WD, and may be comparable to the WD radius. The consideration of the dipolar geometry si…
We study the evolution of the normalized flux of selected ultraviolet emission lines of three classical novae (PW Vul, V1668 Cyg and V1974 Cyg). Different phases ofthe outbursts are studied. We attribute the spectral behavior of the three systems to the variation of the optical thickness and temperature of the envelope during the different phases of the outbursts. Our results are consistent with the theoretical models of classical novae. We also present optical photometric observations of the three systems in the post-novae phase. These observations show the variation of the light curves of th…
AM CVn systems are interacting binaries similar to cataclysmic variables (CVs), but more compact with orbital periods of less than 80 minutes. The primary is a white dwarf, whereas the nature of the secondary is not completely clear, yet. Abundances and composition of the outer layer of the secondary can be found by analysis of the accretion disk (presented by Nagel et al. these proceedings). Spectra from high-state AM CVn systems do not only show typical signatures of accretion disks, but also P Cygni line profiles, a sign of outflow being present in the system. Here we present the first quan…
We present low-resolution Keck I/LRIS spectra spanning from 3200-9000 A of nine young brown dwarfs and three low-mass stars in the TW Hya Association and in Upper Sco. The optical spectral types of the brown dwarfs range from M5.5-M8.75, though two have near-IR spectral types of early L-dwarfs. We report new accretion rates derived from excess Balmer continuum emission for the low-mass stars TW Hya and Hen 3-600A and the brown dwarfs 2MASS J12073347-3932540, UScoCTIO 128, SSSPM J1102-3431, UScoJ160606.29-233513.3, DENIS-P J160603.9-205644, and Oph J162225-240515B, and upper limits on accretion…
