This article presents an efficient way to produce feature-rich, high-dimensionality embedding spaces from real-life images. The features produced are designed to be independent from augmentations used in real-life cases which appear on social media. Our approach uses convolutional neural networks (CNN) to produce an embedding space. An ArcFace head was used to train the model by employing automatically produced augmentations. Additionally, we present a way to make an ensemble out of different embeddings containing the same semantic information, a way to normalize the resulting embedding using an external dataset, and a novel way to perform quick training of these models with a high number of classes in the ArcFace head. Using this approach we achieved the 2nd place in the 2021 Facebook AI Image Similarity Challenge: Descriptor Track.

Anomalous change detection (ACD) methods separate common, uninteresting changes from rare, significant changes in co-registered images collected at different points in time. In this paper we evaluate methods to improve the performance of ACD in detecting human activity in SAR imagery using outdoor music festivals as a target. Our results show that the low dimensionality of SAR data leads to poor performance of ACD when compared to simpler methods such as image differencing, but augmenting the dimensionality of our input feature space by incorporating local spatial information leads to enhanced…

This report deals with translation invariance of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for automatic target recognition (ATR) from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. In particular, the translation invariance of CNNs for SAR ATR represents the robustness against misalignment of target chips extracted from SAR images. To understand the translation invariance of the CNNs, we trained CNNs which classify the target chips from the MSTAR into the ten classes under the condition of with and without data augmentation, and then visualized the translation invariance of the CNNs. According to our resu…

The difficulty in obtaining labeled data relevant to a given task is among the most common and well-known practical obstacles to applying deep learning techniques to new or even slightly modified domains. The data volumes required by the current generation of supervised learning algorithms typically far exceed what a human needs to learn and complete a given task. We investigate ways to expand a given labeled corpus of remote sensed imagery into a larger corpus using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). We then measure how these additional synthetic data affect supervised machine learning p…
Cloud and cloud shadow segmentation are fundamental processes in optical remote sensing image analysis. Current methods for cloud/shadow identification in geospatial imagery are not as accurate as they should, especially in the presence of snow and haze. This paper presents a deep learning-based framework for the detection of cloud/shadow in Landsat 8 images. Our method benefits from a convolutional neural network, Cloud-Net+ (a modification of our previously proposed Cloud-Net \cite{myigarss}) that is trained with a novel loss function (Filtered Jaccard Loss). The proposed loss function is mo…
This paper describes our approach to the DSTL Satellite Imagery Feature Detection challenge run by Kaggle. The primary goal of this challenge is accurate semantic segmentation of different classes in satellite imagery. Our approach is based on an adaptation of fully convolutional neural network for multispectral data processing. In addition, we defined several modifications to the training objective and overall training pipeline, e.g. boundary effect estimation, also we discuss usage of data augmentation strategies and reflectance indices. Our solution scored third place out of 419 entries. It…
Automated animal censuses with aerial imagery are a vital ingredient towards wildlife conservation. Recent models are generally based on deep learning and thus require vast amounts of training data. Due to their scarcity and minuscule size, annotating animals in aerial imagery is a highly tedious process. In this project, we present a methodology to reduce the amount of required training data by resorting to self-supervised pretraining. In detail, we examine a combination of recent contrastive learning methodologies like Momentum Contrast (MoCo) and Cross-Level Instance-Group Discrimination (C…

Fast and effective responses are required when a natural disaster (e.g., earthquake, hurricane, etc.) strikes. Building damage assessment from satellite imagery is critical before an effective response is conducted. High-resolution satellite images provide rich information with pre- and post-disaster scenes for analysis. However, most existing works simply use pre- and post-disaster images as input without considering their correlations. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-directional fusion strategy to better explore the correlations between pre- and post-disaster images. Moreover, the da…

In this paper we propose a mask-conditional synthetic image generation model for creating synthetic satellite imagery datasets. Given a dataset of real high-resolution images and accompanying land cover masks, we show that it is possible to train an upstream conditional synthetic imagery generator, use that generator to create synthetic imagery with the land cover masks, then train a downstream model on the synthetic imagery and land cover masks that achieves similar test performance to a model that was trained with the real imagery. Further, we find that incorporating a mixture of real and sy…

The knowledge about the placement and appearance of lane markings is a prerequisite for the creation of maps with high precision, necessary for autonomous driving, infrastructure monitoring, lane-wise traffic management, and urban planning. Lane markings are one of the important components of such maps. Lane markings convey the rules of roads to drivers. While these rules are learned by humans, an autonomous driving vehicle should be taught to learn them to localize itself. Therefore, accurate and reliable lane marking semantic segmentation in the imagery of roads and highways is needed to ach…
This paper introduces Augraphy, a Python library for constructing data augmentation pipelines which produce distortions commonly seen in real-world document image datasets. Augraphy stands apart from other data augmentation tools by providing many different strategies to produce augmented versions of clean document images that appear as if they have been altered by standard office operations, such as printing, scanning, and faxing through old or dirty machines, degradation of ink over time, and handwritten markings. This paper discusses the Augraphy tool, and shows how it can be used both as a…

In recent years, considerable advancements have been made in the area of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), particularly with the advent of style-based architectures that address many key shortcomings - both in terms of modeling capabilities and network interpretability. Despite these improvements, the adoption of such approaches in the domain of satellite imagery is not straightforward. Typical vision datasets used in generative tasks are well-aligned and annotated, and exhibit limited variability. In contrast, satellite imagery exhibits great spatial and spectral variability, wide prese…

Earth observation offers new insight into anthropogenic changes to nature, and how these changes are effecting (and are effected by) the built environment and the real economy. With the global availability of medium-resolution (10-30m) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) Sentinel-1 and multispectral Sentinel-2 imagery, machine learning can be employed to offer these insights at scale, unbiased to the reporting of companies and countries. In this paper, I introduce DeepSentinel, a data pipeline and experimentation framework for producing general-purpose semantic embeddings of paired Sentinel-1 and S…
Recent work has focused on generating synthetic imagery to increase the size and variability of training data for learning visual tasks in urban scenes. This includes increasing the occurrence of occlusions or varying environmental and weather effects. However, few have addressed modeling variation in the sensor domain. Sensor effects can degrade real images, limiting generalizability of network performance on visual tasks trained on synthetic data and tested in real environments. This paper proposes an efficient, automatic, physically-based augmentation pipeline to vary sensor effects --chrom…

There is a growing demand for accurate high-resolution land cover maps in many fields, e.g., in land-use planning and biodiversity conservation. Developing such maps has been performed using Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) methods, which usually reach good accuracies, but require a high human supervision and the best configuration for one image can hardly be extrapolated to a different image. Recently, the deep learning Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown outstanding results in object recognition in the field of computer vision. However, they have not been fully explored yet in …
We present a novel pipeline for learning the conditional distribution of a building roof mesh given pixels from an aerial image, under the assumption that roof geometry follows a set of regular patterns. Unlike alternative methods that require multiple images of the same object, our approach enables estimating 3D roof meshes using only a single image for predictions. The approach employs the PolyGen, a deep generative transformer architecture for 3D meshes. We apply this model in a new domain and investigate the sensitivity of the image resolution. We propose a novel metric to evaluate the per…
This paper examines, if it is possible to learn structural invariants of city images by using only a single reference picture when producing transformations along the variants in the dataset. Previous work explored the problem of learning from only a few examples and showed that data augmentation techniques benefit performance and generalization for machine learning approaches. First a principal component analysis in conjunction with a Fourier transform is trained on a single reference augmentation training dataset using the city images. Secondly a convolutional neural network is trained on a …

Recent advances in machine learning (ML) and computer vision tools have enabled applications in a wide variety of arenas such as financial analytics, medical diagnostics, and even within the Department of Defense. However, their widespread implementation in real-world use cases poses several challenges: (1) many applications are highly specialized, and hence operate in a \emph{sparse data} domain; (2) ML tools are sensitive to their training sets and typically require cumbersome, labor-intensive data collection and data labelling processes; and (3) ML tools can be extremely "black box," offeri…

Traffic sign recognition is an important component of many advanced driving assistance systems, and it is required for full autonomous driving. Computational performance is usually the bottleneck in using large scale neural networks for this purpose. SqueezeNet is a good candidate for efficient image classification of traffic signs, but in our experiments it does not reach high accuracy, and we believe this is due to lack of data, requiring data augmentation. Generative adversarial networks can learn the high dimensional distribution of empirical data, allowing the generation of new data point…
