A defining signature of strongly correlated electronic systems is the existence of competing phases with similar ground state energies, resulting in a rich phase diagram. While in the recently discovered nickelate superconductors, a high antiferromagnetic exchange energy has been reported, which implies the existence of strong electronic correlations, signatures of competing phases have not yet been observed. Here, we uncover a charge order (CO) in infinite-layer nickelates La1-xSrxNiO2 using resonant x-ray scattering across the Ni L-edge. In the parent compound, the CO arranges along the Ni-O bond direction with an incommensurate wave vector (0.344+/-0.002, 0) r.l.u., distinct from the stripe order in other nickelates which propagates along a direction 45 degree to the Ni-O bond. The CO resonance profile indicates that CO originates from the Ni 3d states and induces a parasitic charge modulation of La electrons. Upon doping, the CO diminishes and the ordering wave vector shifts toward a commensurate value of 1/3 r.l.u., indicating that the CO likely arises from strong correlation effects and not from Fermi surface nesting.
We comment on a simple way to accommodate translational symmetry breaking into the recently proposed holographic model which features a superconducting dome-shaped region on the temperature-doping phase diagram.
The Nernst coefficient of the cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3Oy was recently shown to become strongly anisotropic within the basal plane when cooled below the pseudogap temperature T*, revealing that the pseudogap phase breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry of the CuO2 planes. Here we report on the evolution of this Nernst anisotropy at low temperature, once superconductivity is suppressed by a magnetic field. We find that the anisotropy drops rapidly below 80 K, to vanish in the T=0 limit. We show that this loss of anisotropy is due to the emergence of a small high-mobility electron-like po…
Fine questions our interpretation of unidirectional-stripes over bidirectional-checkerboard, and illustrates his criticism by simulating a momentum space structure consistent with our data and corresponding to a checkerboard-looking real space density. Here we use a local rotational-symmetry analysis to demonstrate that the simulated image is in actuality composed of locally unidirectional modulations of the charge density, consistent with our original conclusions.
We report theoretical predictions on the pairing symmetry of the newly discovered superconducting nickelate Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ based on the renormalized mean-field theory for a generalized model Hamiltonian proposed in [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{101}, 020501(R)]. For practical values of the key parameters, we find a transition between a gapped ($d+is$)-wave pairing state in the small doping region to a gapless $d$-wave pairing state in the large doping region, accompanied by an abrupt Fermi surface change at the critical doping. Our overall phase diagram also shows the possibility of a ($d…
We consider holographic superconductors in a broad class of massive gravity backgrounds. These theories provide a holographic description of a superconductor with broken translational symmetry. Such models exhibit a rich phase structure: depending on the values of the temperature and the disorder strength the boundary system can be in superconducting, normal metallic or normal pseudoinsulating phases. Furthermore the system supports interesting collective excitation of the charge carriers, which appears in the normal phase, persists in the superconducting phase, but eventually gets destroyed b…
The interplay between dimensionality and various phases of matter is a central inquiry in condensed matter physics. New phases are often discovered through spontaneously broken symmetry. Understanding the dimensionality of superconductivity in the high-temperature cuprate analogue $-$ layered nickelates and revealing a new symmetry-breaking state are the keys to deciphering the underlying pairing mechanism. Here, we demonstrate the highly-tunable dimensionality and a broken rotational symmetry state in the superconductivity of square-planar layered nickelates. The superconducting state, probed…
Following the early discovery of stripe-like order in La-based copper-oxide superconductors, charge ordering instabilities were observed in all cuprate families. However, it has proven difficult to distinguish between uni- (stripes) and bi-directional (checkerboard) charge order in Y- and Bi-based materials. Here we use resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) to measure the two-dimensional structure factor in YBCO, in reciprocal space. Our data reveal the presence of charge stripe order, i.e. locally unidirectional density waves, suggesting it as the true microscopic nature of charge modulations in cu…
We demonstrate that films of unconventional (d-wave) superconductor at temperatures $T\lesssim 0.43 T_c$ can exhibit unusual superconducting phases. The new ground states beside the broken gauge and the point group symmetries can spontaneously break (i) continuous translational symmetry and form periodic order parameter structures in the plane of the film, or (ii) time-reversal symmetry and develop supercurrent flowing along the film. These states are result of the strong transverse inhomogeniety present in films with thickness of several coherence lengths. We show a natural similarity between…
Comin et al. [Science 347, 1335 (2015)] have interpreted their resonant X-ray scattering experiment as indicating that charge inhomogeneities in the family of high-temperature superconductors YBa2Cu3O6+y (YBCO) have the character of one-dimensional stripes rather than two-dimensional checkerboards. The present comment shows that one cannot distinguish between stripes and checkerboards on the basis of the above experiment.
We study fermions in a lattice, with on-site and nearest neighbor attractive interactions between two spin species. We consider two geometries: both spins in a triangular lattice, and a mixed geometry with up-spins in honeycomb and down-spins in triangular lattices. We focus on the interplay between spin-population imbalance, on-site and valence bond pairing, and order parameter symmetry. The mixed geometry leads to a rich phase diagram of topologically non-trivial phases. In both geometries, we predict order parameters with simultaneous time-reversal and translational symmetry breaking.
We investigate equilibrium properties, including structure of the order parameter, superflow patterns, and thermodynamics of low-temperature surface phases of layered d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors in magnetic field. At zero external magnetic field, time-reversal symmetry and continuous translational symmetry along the edge are broken spontaneously in a second order phase transition at a temperature $T^*\approx 0.18 T_c$, where $T_c$ is the superconducting transition temperature. At the phase transition there is a jump in the specific heat that scales with the ratio between the edge length $…
Recently, Kaminski et al. have reported that time reversal symmetry is broken in the pseudogap phase in the high temperature superconducting material Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{2+δ} (Bi-2212). Here we examine the role of translationally invariant broken time reversal states on d_{x^2-y^2} superconductors. In particular, we determine the change in the superconducting order parameter structure. We find that the broken time reversal pseudogap state that is consistent with the experiment of Kaminski et al., gives rise to a novel mixed singlet-triplet pairing d+ip phase. This d+ip state is shown to give rise…
The ability to probe symmetry breaking transitions on their natural time scales is one of the key challenges in nonequilibrium physics. Stripe ordering represents an intriguing type of broken symmetry, where complex interactions result in atomic-scale lines of charge and spin density. Although phonon anomalies and periodic distortions attest the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the formation of stripe phases, a direct time-domain view of vibrational symmetry breaking is lacking. We report experiments that track the transient multi-THz response of the model stripe compound La$_{1.75}$S…
We show that spontaneous breaking of the translational symmetry (SBTS) of strongly interacting electron and phonon fields acknowledged in lightly doped cuprates to interpret broad bands in their ARPES and optical conductivity spectra influences the carrier distribution function as charge carrier momentum is no longer certain. We develop appropriate distribution and use it to calculate the carrier concentration in different states in essentially doped systems with SBTS. This allows studying doping and temperature evolution of ARPES spectra of such systems. We reveal that at increasing both temp…
There is a growing compelling experimental evidence that a quantum complex matter scenario made of multiple electronic components, and competing quantum phases is needed to grab the key physics of high critical temperature (Tc) superconductivity in layered cuprates. While it is known that defects self-organization controls Tc, the mechanism remains an open issue. Here we focus on the theoretical prediction of the multi-band electronic structure and the formation of broken Fermi surfaces generated by the self-organization of oxygen interstitials O-i atomic wires in the spacer layers in HgBa2CuO…
We report on a Monte Carlo study of the lowest-Landau-level limit of the Lawrence-Doniach model for a layered superconductor. We have studied order parameter correlation functions for indications of the broken translational symmetry and the off-diagonal long range order present in the mean-field-theory vortex lattice. Our results are consistent with a single first order phase transition between a low temperature 3D vortex solid phase, with both broken translational symmetry and off-diagonal long range order, and a high temperature vortex liquid phase with no broken symmetries. We construct a u…
We investigate the physical effects of translational symmetry breaking in Fe-based high-temperature superconductors due to alternating anion positions. In the representative parent compounds, including the newly discovered Fe-vacancy-ordered $\mathrm{K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_2}$, an unusual change of orbital character is found across the one-Fe Brillouin zone upon unfolding the first-principles band structure and Fermi surfaces, suggesting that covering a larger one-Fe Brillouin zone is necessary in experiments. Most significantly, the electron pockets (critical to the magnetism and superconductivity…
To resolve the nature of the hidden order below 17.5\,K in the heavy fermion compound URu$_2$Si$_2$, identifying which symmetries are broken below the hidden order transition is one of the most important steps. Several recent experiments on the electronic structure have shown that the Fermi surface in the hidden order phase is quite close to the result of band-structure calculations within the framework of itinerant electron picture assuming the antiferromagnetism. This provides strong evidence for the band folding along the c-axis with the ordering vector of $(0\,0\,1)$, corresponding to brok…

The possibility is investigated that competition between fluctuations at different symmetry-related ordering wave vectors may affect the quantum phase transition between a fermi liquid and a longitudinal spin density wave state, in particular giving rise to an intermediate 'nematic' state with broken rotational symmetry but unbroken translational symmetry. At the marginal dimension the nematic transition is found to be preempted by a first order transition but a weak symmetry breaking field restores a second order magnetic transition with an intermediate regime in which correlations substantia…
The association of broken symmetries with phase transitions is ubiquitous in condensed matter physics: crystals break translational symmetry, magnets break rotational symmetry, and superconductors break gauge symmetry. However, despite the frequency with which it is made, this last statement is a paradox. A gauge symmetry, in this case the U(1) gauge symmetry of electromagnetism, is a redundancy in our description of nature, so the notion of breaking such a "symmetry" is unphysical. Here, we will discuss how gauge symmetry breaks, and doesn't, inside a superconductor, and explore the fundament…
We present a minimal bottom-up extension of the Chern-Simons bulk action for holographic translational symmetry breaking that naturally gives rise to pair density waves. We construct stationary inhomogeneous black hole solutions in which both the U(1) symmetry and spatially translational symmetry are spontaneously broken at finite temperature and charge density. This novel solution provides a dual description of a superconducting phase intertwined with charge, current and parity orders.
We study $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topologically ordered states enriched by translational symmetry by employing a recently developed 2D bosonization approach that implements an exact $\mathbb{Z}_2$ charge-flux attachment in the lattice. Such states can display `weak symmetry breaking' of translations, in which both the Hamiltonian and ground state remain fully translational invariant but the symmetry is `broken' by its anyon quasi-particles, in the sense that its action maps them into a different super-selection sector. We demonstrate that this phenomenon occurs when the fermionic spinons form a weak top…
In this work, we determine states of electronic order of small-angle twisted bilayer graphene. Ground states are determined for weak and strong couplings which are representatives for varying distances of the twist-angle from its magic value. In the weak-coupling regime, charge density waves emerge which break translational and $C_{3}$-rotational symmetry. In the strong coupling-regime, we find rotational and translational symmetry breaking Mott insulating states for all commensurate moiré band fillings. Depending on the local occupation of superlattice sites hosting up to four electrons, glob…
Strong interactions that favor chiral p-wave pairing, combined with strong pair breaking by confining boundaries, are shown to lead to new equilibrium states with different broken symmetries. Based on a strong-coupling Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory that accurately accounts for the thermodynamics and phase diagram of the bulk phases of superfluid $^3$He, we predict new phases of superfluid $^3$He for confined geometries that spontaneously break rotational and translational symmetry in combination with parity and time-reversal symmetry. One of the newly predicted phases exhibits a unique combinati…
We study the superfluid-insulator transitions of bosons on the Kagome lattice at incommensurate filling factors f=1/2 and 2/3 using a duality analysis. We find that at f=1/2 the bosons will always be in a superfluid phase and demonstrate that the T_3 symmetry of the dual (dice) lattice, which results in dynamic localization of vortices due to the Aharanov-Bohm caging effect, is at the heart of this phenomenon. In contrast, for f=2/3, we find that the bosons exhibit a quantum phase transition between superfluid and translational symmetry broken Mott insulating phases. We discuss the possible br…
We explore the phase diagram of a two-component ultracold atomic Fermi gas interacting with zero-range forces in the limit of weak-coupling. We focus on the dependence of the pairing gap and the free energy on the variations in the number densities of the two species while the total density of the system is held fixed. As the density asymmetry is increased, the system exhibits a transition from a homogenous Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) phase to phases with spontaneously broken global space symmetries. One such realization is the deformed Fermi surface superfluidity (DFS) which exploits the …
It has been proposed that the superconductivity of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is characterized by pairing that is unconventional and, furthermore, spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry. However, one of the key expected consequences, viz., that the ground state should exhibit chiral charge currents localized near the boundaries of the sample, has not been observed, to date. We explore an alternative implication of time-reversal symmetry breaking: the existence of walls between domains of opposing chirality. Via a general phenomenological approach, we derive an effective description of the superconduct…
