Ice accumulation in the blades of wind turbines can cause them to describe anomalous rotations or no rotations at all, thus affecting the generation of electricity and power output. In this work, we investigate the problem of ice accumulation in wind turbines by framing it as anomaly detection of multi-variate time series. Our approach focuses on two main parts: first, learning low-dimensional representations of time series using a Variational Recurrent Autoencoder (VRAE), and second, using unsupervised clustering algorithms to classify the learned representations as normal (no ice accumulated) or abnormal (ice accumulated). We have evaluated our approach on a custom wind turbine time series dataset, for the two-classes problem (one normal versus one abnormal class), we obtained a classification accuracy of up to 96$\%$ on test data. For the multiple-class problem (one normal versus multiple abnormal classes), we present a qualitative analysis of the low-dimensional learned latent space, providing insights into the capacities of our approach to tackle such problem. Wind power, as an alternative to burning fossil fuels, is abundant and inexhaustible. To fully utilize wind power, wind farms are usually located in areas of high altitude and facing serious ice conditions, which can lead to serious consequences. Quick detection of blade ice accretion is crucial for the maintenance of wind farms. Unlike traditional methods of installing expensive physical detectors on wind blades, data-driven approaches are increasingly popular for inspecting the wind turbine failures. In this work, we propose a wavelet enhanced autoencoder model (WaveletAE) to identify wind t…

We present an application of anomaly detection techniques based on deep recurrent autoencoders to the problem of detecting gravitational wave signals in laser interferometers. Trained on noise data, this class of algorithms could detect signals using an unsupervised strategy, i.e., without targeting a specific kind of source. We develop a custom architecture to analyze the data from two interferometers. We compare the obtained performance to that obtained with other autoencoder architectures and with a convolutional classifier. The unsupervised nature of the proposed strategy comes with a cost…
The increasing complexity of mobility plus the growing population in cities, together with the importance of privacy when sharing data from vehicles or any device, makes traffic forecasting that uses data from infrastructure and citizens an open and challenging task. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to deal with predictions of speed, volume, and main traffic direction, in a new aggregated way of traffic data presented as videos. The approach leverages the continuity in a sequence of frames and its dynamics, learning to predict changing areas in a low dimensional space and then, rec…

Hybrid methods that utilize both content and rating information are commonly used in many recommender systems. However, most of them use either handcrafted features or the bag-of-words representation as a surrogate for the content information but they are neither effective nor natural enough. To address this problem, we develop a collaborative recurrent autoencoder (CRAE) which is a denoising recurrent autoencoder (DRAE) that models the generation of content sequences in the collaborative filtering (CF) setting. The model generalizes recent advances in recurrent deep learning from i.i.d. input…
Precision beekeeping allows to monitor bees' living conditions by equipping beehives with sensors. The data recorded by these hives can be analyzed by machine learning models to learn behavioral patterns of or search for unusual events in bee colonies. One typical target is the early detection of bee swarming as apiarists want to avoid this due to economical reasons. Advanced methods should be able to detect any other unusual or abnormal behavior arising from illness of bees or from technical reasons, e.g. sensor failure. In this position paper we present an autoencoder, a deep learning model,…
Rotating machines like engines, pumps, or turbines are ubiquitous in modern day societies. Their mechanical parts such as electrical engines, rotors, or bearings are the major components and any failure in them may result in their total shutdown. Anomaly detection in such critical systems is very important to monitor the system's health. As the requirement to obtain a dataset from rotating machines where all possible faults are explicitly labeled is difficult to satisfy, we propose a method that focuses on the normal behavior of the machine instead. We propose an autoencoder model-based method…

In the digitization of energy systems, sensors and smart meters are increasingly being used to monitor production, operation and demand. Detection of anomalies based on smart meter data is crucial to identify potential risks and unusual events at an early stage, which can serve as a reference for timely initiation of appropriate actions and improving management. However, smart meter data from energy systems often lack labels and contain noise and various patterns without distinctively cyclical. Meanwhile, the vague definition of anomalies in different energy scenarios and highly complex tempor…

Because of the considerable heterogeneity and complexity of the technological landscape, building accurate models to forecast is a challenging endeavor. Due to their high prevalence in many complex systems, S-curves are a popular forecasting approach in previous work. However, their forecasting performance has not been directly compared to other technology forecasting approaches. Additionally, recent developments in time series forecasting that claim to improve forecasting accuracy are yet to be applied to technological development data. This work addresses both research gaps by comparing the …

Chemical autoencoders are attractive models as they combine chemical space navigation with possibilities for de-novo molecule generation in areas of interest. This enables them to produce focused chemical libraries around a single lead compound for employment early in a drug discovery project. Here it is shown that the choice of chemical representation, such as SMILES strings, has a large influence on the properties of the latent space. It is further explored to what extent translating between different chemical representations influences the latent space similarity to the SMILES strings or ci…

It has been previously observed that training Variational Recurrent Autoencoders (VRAE) for text generation suffers from serious uninformative latent variables problem. The model would collapse into a plain language model that totally ignore the latent variables and can only generate repeating and dull samples. In this paper, we explore the reason behind this issue and propose an effective regularizer based approach to address it. By imposing a sparsity-inducing penalty on the weights (of the decoder) and encouraging specific sets of weights to be zero, our CR-VAE learns a sparse adj…

Data-space inversion (DSI) and related procedures represent a family of methods applicable for data assimilation in subsurface flow settings. These methods differ from model-based techniques in that they provide only posterior predictions for quantities (time series) of interest, not posterior models with calibrated parameters. Model reduction of high-dimensional dynamical systems alleviates computational burdens faced in various tasks from design optimization to model predictive control. Further, some systems may require special treatment of nonlinearities to ensure computational efficiency or additional modeling to preserve stabili…

Gravitational wave astronomy is a rapidly growing field of modern astrophysics, with observations being made frequently by the LIGO detectors. Gravitational wave signals are often extremely weak and the data from the detectors, such as LIGO, is contaminated with non-Gaussian and non-stationary noise, often containing transient disturbances which can obscure real signals. Traditional denoising methods, such as principal component analysis and dictionary learning, are not optimal for dealing with this non-Gaussian noise, especially for low signal-to-noise ratio gravitational wave signals.
