This article will review quantum particle creation in expanding universes. The emphasis will be on the basic physical principles and on selected applications to cosmological models. The needed formalism of quantum field theory in curved spacetime will be summarized, and applied to the example of scalar particle creation in a spatially flat universe. Estimates for the creation rate will be given and applied to inflationary cosmology models. Analog models which illustrate the same physical principles and may be experimentally realizable are also discussed.
Gravitational particle production has been investigated by using Einstein's gravitational field equations in the presence of a cosmological constant. To study the mechanism of particle creation, the Universe has been considered as a thermodynamics system and non-equilibrium thermodynamics has been employed. In order to estimate the cosmological parameters with observational data, including SNe Ia, BAO, Planck 2015 and HST, we have chosen a phenomenological approach for the rate of particle creation. A non-zero particle production rate was obtained implying that the possibility of the particle …
We investigate entanglement production by inhomogeneous perturbations over a homogeneous and isotropic cosmic background, demonstrating that the interplay between quantum and geometric effects can have relevant consequences on entanglement entropy, with respect to homogeneous scenarios. To do so, we focus on a conformally coupled scalar field and discuss how geometric production of scalar particles leads to entanglement. Perturbatively, at first order we find oscillations in entropy correction, whereas at second order the underlying geometry induces mode-mixing on entanglement production. We t…
The notion of inflation (past or present) in standard cosmological models is shown to be a consequence of a sufficiently high second law entropy production from the internal heating of the universal expansion. The longitudinal viscous internal heating of matter requires neither ``inflaton'' fields nor ``quintessence'' fields which in theory may induce a cosmological term into the Einstein equations. The purely thermodynamic principles required to understand inflation within the context of the standard general relativity equations will be discussed in detail.
We estimate the entropy associated to a background of squeezed cosmic gravitons, and we argue that the process of cosmological pair production from the vacuum may explain the large amount of entropy of our present universe.
A review is given of the various approaches to and expressions for total energy-momentum and mass in the presence of a positive cosmological constant in Einstein's field equations, together with a discussion of the key conceptual questions, main ideas and techniques behind them.
We investigate the pair creation of noncommutative black holes in a background with positive cosmological constant. As a first step we derive the noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild deSitter solution. By varying the mass and the cosmological constant parameters, we find several spacetimes compatible with the new solution: positive mass spacetimes admit one cosmological horizon and two, one or no black hole horizons, while negative mass spacetimes have just a cosmological horizon. These new black holes share the properties of the corresponding asymptotically flat solutions, including…
We show that a variety of cosmologically motivated effective quasiparticle space-times can be produced in harmonically trapped superfluid Bose and Fermi gases. We study the analogue of cosmological particle production in these effective space-times, induced by trapping potentials and coupling constants possessing an arbitrary time dependence. The WKB probabilities for phonon creation from the superfluid vacuum are calculated, and an experimental procedure to detect quasiparticle production by measuring density-density correlation functions is proposed.
We study production of light particles due to oscillation of the Hubble parameter or the scale factor. Any coherently oscillating scalar field, irrespective of its energy fraction in the universe, imprints such an oscillating feature on them. Not only the Einstein gravity but extended gravity models, such as models with non-minimal (derivative) coupling to gravity and $f(R)$ gravity, lead to oscillation of the scale factor. We present a convenient way to estimate the gravitational particle production rate in these circumstances. Cosmological implications of gravitational particle production, s…
We perform a qualitative and thermodynamic study of two models when one takes into account adiabatic particle production. In the first one, there is a constant particle production rate, which leads to solutions depicting the current cosmic acceleration but without inflation. The other one has solutions that unify the early and late time acceleration. These solutions converge asymptotically to the thermal equilibrium.
In this work we review the theories of origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The general conditions for achieving baryogenesis and leptogenesis in a CPT conserving field theory have been laid down by Sakharov. In this review we discuss scenarios where a background scalar or gravitational field spontaneously breaks the CPT symmetry and splits the energy levels between particles and anti-particles. Baryon or Lepton number violating processes in proceeding at thermal equilibrium in such backgrounds gives rise to Baryon or Lepton number asymmetry.
Quantum fields in cosmological spacetimes can experience particle production due to their interaction with the expanding background. This effect is particularly relevant for models of the very early Universe, when the energy density generated through this process may back-react on the cosmological expansion. Yet, these scenarios have not been fully explored due to the several technical hurdles imposed by the back-reaction calculations. In this work we review the basics of cosmological quantum particle production and demonstrate a numerical algorithm to solve the back-reaction problem in regime…
We show that the amount of particle production in an arbitrary cosmological background can be determined using only the late-time positive-frequency modes. We don't refer to modes at early times, so there is no need for a Bogolubov transformation. We also show that particle production can be extracted from the Feynman propagator in an auxiliary spacetime. This provides a first-quantized formalism for computing particle production which, unlike conventional Bogolubov transformations, may be amenable to a string-theoretic generalization.
The entropy growth in a cosmological process of pair production is completely determined by the associated squeezing parameter, and is insensitive to the number of particles in the initial state. The total produced entropy may represent a significant fraction of the entropy stored today in the cosmic black-body radiation, provided pair production originates from a change in the background metric at a curvature scale of the Planck order.
We show that the study of hidden conformal symmetry that associates to the Kerr/CFT correspondence can also apply to the cosmological horizon in Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT-de Sitter spacetime. This symmetry allows one to employ some two dimensional conformal field theory methods to understand the properties of the cosmological horizon. The entropy can be understood by using the Cardy formula, and the equation for scattering process in the near region has an agreement with the one obtained from a two point function in two dimensional conformal field theory. We also show that pair production can occur…
We show that the effective coarse graining of a two-mode squeezed density matrix, implicit in the Wehrl approaches to a semiclassical phase-space distribution, leads to results in agreement with previous different definitions of entropy for the process of pair production from the vacuum. We also present, in this context, a possible interpretation of the entropy growth as an amplification (due to the squeezing) of our lack of knowledge about the initial conditions, which gives rise to an effective decoherence of the squeezed density matrix.
We consider an exactly solvable model for production of fermions in the Friedman flat universe with a scale factor linearly growing with time. Exact solution expressed through the special functions admit an analytical calculation of the number density of created particles. We also discuss in general the role of the phenomenon of the cosmological particle production in the history of universe.
We investigate the pair creation of charged black holes in a background with a positive cosmological constant. We consider $C$ metrics with a cosmological constant, and show that the conical singularities in the metric only disappear when it reduces to the Reissner-Nordström de Sitter metric. We construct an instanton describing the pair production of extreme black holes and an instanton describing the pair production of non-extreme black holes from the Reissner-Nordström de Sitter metric, and calculate their actions. There are a number of striking similarities between these instantons and the…
With the help of a conformal, timelike Killing-vector we define generalized equilibrium states for cosmological fluids with particle production. For massless particles the generalized equilibrium conditions require the production rate to vanish and the well known ``global'' equilibrium of standard relativistic thermodynamics is recovered as a limiting case. The equivalence between the creation rate for particles with nonzero mass and an effective viscous fluid pressure follows as a consequence of the generalized equilibrium properties. The implications of this equivalence for the cosmological …

In this essay we offer a comprehensible overview of the gravitational aether scenario. This is a possible extension of Einstein's theory of relativity to the quantum regime via an effective approach. Quantization of gravity usually faces several issues including an unexpected high vacuum energy density caused by quantum fluctuations. The model presented in this paper offers a solution to the so-called cosmological constant problems. As its name suggests, the gravitational aether introduces preferred reference frames, while it remains compatible with the general theory of relativity. As a rare …
The intensive cosmological creation of vector W, Z- bosons in the cosmological model with the relative units is considered. Field theoretical models are studied, which predict that the CMB radiation and the baryon matter in the universe can be products of decay and annihilation processes of these primordial bosons.
The recently proposed states of low energy provide a well-motivated class of reference states for the quantized linear scalar field on cosmological Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes. The low energy property of a state is localized close to some value of the cosmological time coordinate. We present calculations of the relative cosmological particle production between a state of low energy at early time and another such state at later time. In an exponentially expanding Universe, we find that the particle production shows oscillations in the spatial frequency modes. The basis of the method f…
Introducing an effective refraction index of an isotropic cosmic medium, we investigate the cosmological fluid dynamics which is consistent with a conformal, timelike symmetry of a corresponding ``optical'' metric. We demonstrate that this kind of symmetry is compatible with the existence of a negative viscous pressure and, consequently, with cosmological entropy production. We establish an exactly solvable model according to which the viscous pressure is a consequence of a self-interacting one-particle force which is self-consistently exerted on the microscopic particles of a relativistic gas…
We discuss the adiabatic basis dependence of particle number in time-dependent backgrounds. In particular, we focus on preheating after inflation, and show that, for the optimal basis, the time dependence of the produced particle number can be well approximated by a simple connection formula, which can be obtained by analysing Stokes phenomenon in given backgrounds. As we show explicitly, the simple connection formula can describe various parameter regions such as narrow and broad resonance regime in a unified manner.
We investigate cosmological particle production in spacetimes where Lorentz invariance emerges in the infrared limit, but is explicitly broken in the ultraviolet regime. Our specific model focuses on the boost subgroup that supports CPT invariance and results in a momentum-dependent dispersion relation. Motivated by previous studies on spacetimes emerging from a microscopic substrate, we show how these modifications naturally lead to momentum-dependent rainbow metrics. Firstly, we investigate the possibility of reproducing cosmological particle production in spacetimes emerging from real Bose …
Quantum theory of a test field on a quantum cosmological spacetime may be viewed as a theory of the test field on an emergent classical background. In such a case, the resulting dressed metric for the field propagation is a function of the quantum fluctuations of the original geometry. When the backreaction is negligible, massive modes can experience an anisotropic Bianchi type I background. The field modes propagating on such a quantum-gravity-induced spacetime can then unveil interesting phenomenological consequences of the super-Planckian scales, such as gravitational particle production. T…
The cosmological entropy production is studied in the (1+3+6)-dimensional space-times consisting of the outer space (the 3-dimensional expanding section) and the inner space (the 6-dimensional section). The inner space expands initially and contracts later. First it is shown how the production of the 3-dimensional entropy S_3 within the horizon is strengthened by the dissipation due to viscous processes between the two spaces, in which we consider the viscosity caused by the gravitational-wave transport. Next it is shown under what conditions we can have the critical epoch when S_3 reaches the…
We study the dynamics of a strongly-coupled quantum field theory in a cosmological spacetime using the holographic AdS/CFT correspondence. Specifically we consider a confining gauge theory in an expanding FRW universe and track the evolution of the stress-energy tensor during a period of expansion, varying the initial temperature as well as the rate and amplitude of the expansion. At strong coupling, particle production is inseparable from entropy production. As a result, we find significant qualitative differences from the weak coupling results: at strong coupling the system rapidly loses mem…
Combining the equivalence between cosmological particle creation and an effective viscous fluid pressure with the fact that the latter represents a dynamical degree of freedom within the second-order Israel-Stewart theory for imperfect fluids, we reconsider the possibility of accelerated expansion in fluid cosmology. We find an inherent self-limitation for the magnitude of an effective bulk pressure which is due to adiabatic (isentropic) particle production. For a production rate which depends quadratically on the Hubble rate we confirm the existence of solutions which describe a smooth transi…
We study the non-adiabatic cosmological production of ultra light dark matter (ULDM) under a minimal set of assumptions: a free ultra light real scalar as a spectator field in its Bunch-Davies vacuum state during inflation and instantaneous reheating into a radiation dominated era. For (ULDM) fields minimally coupled to gravity, non-adiabatic particle production yields a \emph{distribution function} peaked at \emph{low} comoving momentum $\mathcal{N}_k \propto 1/k^3$. The infrared behavior is a remnant of the infrared enhancement of light minimally coupled fields during inflation. We obtain th…
In a homogeneous and isotropic universe with non-zero spatial curvature we consider the effects of gravitational particle production in the dynamics of the universe. We show that the dynamics of the universe in such a background is characterized by a single nonlinear differential equation which is significantly dependent on the rate of particle creation and whose solutions can be dominated by the curvature effects at early times. For different particle creation rates we apply the singularity test in order to find the analytic solutions of the background dynamics. We describe the behavior of th…

We provide a concise review on multi-field inflation and cosmological perturbations. We discuss convenient and physically meaningful bases in terms of which perturbations can be systematically studied. We give formal accounts on the gauge fixing conditions and present the perturbation action in two gauges. We also briefly review non-linear perturbations.
Since the Randall-Sundrum 1999 papers, braneworlds have been a favourite playground to test string inspired cosmological models. The subject has developped into two main directions : elaborating more complex models in order to strenghten the connection with string theories, and trying to confront them with observations, in particular the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies. We review here the latter and see that, even in the simple, "paradigmatic", case of a single expanding brane in a 5D anti-de Sitter bulk, there is still a missing link between the "view from the brane" and the "view fr…
The Universe evolution during the radiation-dominated epoch in the R^2-extended gravity theory is considered. The equations of motion for R and H are solved analytically and numerically. The particle production rate by the oscillating curvature is calculated in one-loop approximation and the back reaction of particle production on the evolution of R is taken into account. Possible implications of the model for cosmological creation of non-thermal dark matter is discussed.
This is a written version of the review talk given at the meeting on "Interface of Gravitational and Quantum Realms" at IUCAA, Pune during December 2001. The talk reviewed the recent work of Martin Bojowald on Loop Quantum Cosmology.
Axion production due to photon-axion mixing in tangled magnetic field(s) prior to recombination epoch and magnetic field damping can generate cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectral distortions. In particular, contribution of both processes to CMB $μ$ distortion in the case of resonant photon-axion mixing is studied. Assuming that magnetic field power spectrum is approximated by a power law $P_B(k)\propto k^n$ with spectral index $n$, it is shown that for magnetic field cut-off scales $172.5$ pc $\leq λ_B\leq 4\times 10^3$ pc, axion contribution to CMB $μ$ distortion is subdominant in compa…
We compute the spectra and total fluxes of quantum mechanically produced particles crossing the black hole and cosmological horizons in Schwarzschild de Sitter (SdS). Particle states are defined with respect to well-behaved, Kruskal coordinates near the horizons, and as a consequence we find that these spectra are generally non-thermal. The non-thermal Bogoliubov coefficient for a vacuum fluctuation near the black hole horizon to produce a particle that crosses the cosmological horizon is shown to equal to the convolution of two thermal coefficients, one at the cosmological temperature and one…
The current status of the recent developments of the second-order gauge-invariant cosmological perturbation theory is reviewed. To show the essence of this perturbation theory, we concentrate only on the universe filled with a single scalar field. Through this review, we point out the problems which should be clarified for the further theoretical sophistication of this perturbation theory. This review is an extension of the review paper [K.~Nakamura, "Second-Order Gauge-Invariant Cosmological Perturbation Theory: Current Status", Advances in Astronomy, vol.2010 (2010), 576273.]. We also expect…

In models with large extra dimensions particle collisions with center-of-mass energy larger than the fundamental gravitational scale can generate non-perturbative gravitational objects such as black holes and branes. The formation and the subsequent decay of these super-Planckian objects would be detectable in particle colliders and high energy cosmic ray detectors, and have interesting implications in cosmology and astrophysics. In this paper we present a review of black hole and brane production in TeV-scale gravity.
For suitable cosmological backgrounds, thermal fluctuations of a gas of strings can generate a scale-invariant spectrum of cosmological fluctuations without requiring a phase of inflationary expansion. We highlight the key points of this mechanism, and discuss cosmological backgrounds in which this scenario can be realized. The spectrum of cosmological perturbations has a small red tilt (like in scalar field-driven inflation) but (unlike in inflation) there is a small blue tilt of the spectrum of gravitational waves.
Particle production by slow-changing gravitational fields is usually described using quantum field theory in curved spacetime. Calculations require a definition of the vacuum state, which can be given using the adiabatic (WKB) approximation. I investigate the best attainable precision of the resulting approximate definition of the particle number. The standard WKB ansatz yields a divergent asymptotic series in the adiabatic parameter. I derive a novel formula for the optimal number of terms in that series and demonstrate that the error of the optimally truncated WKB series is exponentially sma…
