Accurate cardiac computing, analysis and modeling from multi-modality images are important for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease. Late gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance imaging (LGE MRI) is a promising technique to visualize and quantify myocardial infarction (MI) and atrial scars. Automating quantification of MI and atrial scars can be challenging due to the low image quality and complex enhancement patterns of LGE MRI. Moreover, compared with the other sequences LGE MRIs with gold standard labels are particularly limited, which represents another obstacle for developing novel algorithms for automatic segmentation and quantification of LGE MRIs. This chapter aims to summarize the state-of-the-art and our recent advanced contributions on deep learning based multi-modality cardiac image analysis. Firstly, we introduce two benchmark works for multi-sequence cardiac MRI based myocardial and pathology segmentation. Secondly, two novel frameworks for left atrial scar segmentation and quantification from LGE MRI were presented. Thirdly, we present three unsupervised domain adaptation techniques for cross-modality cardiac image segmentation.

Deep convolutional networks have demonstrated the state-of-the-art performance on various medical image computing tasks. Leveraging images from different modalities for the same analysis task holds clinical benefits. However, the generalization capability of deep models on test data with different distributions remain as a major challenge. In this paper, we propose the PnPAdaNet (plug-and-play adversarial domain adaptation network) for adapting segmentation networks between different modalities of medical images, e.g., MRI and CT. We propose to tackle the significant domain shift by aligning t…

Medical image annotations are prohibitively time-consuming and expensive to obtain. To alleviate annotation scarcity, many approaches have been developed to efficiently utilize extra information, e.g.,semi-supervised learning further exploring plentiful unlabeled data, domain adaptation including multi-modality learning and unsupervised domain adaptation resorting to the prior knowledge from additional modality. In this paper, we aim to investigate the feasibility of simultaneously leveraging abundant unlabeled data and well-established cross-modality data for annotation-efficient medical imag…
Unsupervised domain adaptation is useful in medical image segmentation. Particularly, when ground truths of the target images are not available, domain adaptation can train a target-specific model by utilizing the existing labeled images from other modalities. Most of the reported works mapped images of both the source and target domains into a common latent feature space, and then reduced their discrepancy either implicitly with adversarial training or explicitly by directly minimizing a discrepancy metric. In this work, we propose a new framework, where the latent features of both domains ar…

Multi-modality cardiac imaging plays a key role in the management of patients with cardiovascular diseases. It allows a combination of complementary anatomical, morphological and functional information, increases diagnosis accuracy, and improves the efficacy of cardiovascular interventions and clinical outcomes. Fully-automated processing and quantitative analysis of multi-modality cardiac images could have a direct impact on clinical research and evidence-based patient management. However, these require overcoming significant challenges including inter-modality misalignment and finding optima…

Multi-sequence of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images can provide complementary information for myocardial pathology (scar and edema). However, it is still challenging to fuse these underlying information for pathology segmentation effectively. This work presents an automatic cascade pathology segmentation framework based on multi-modality CMR images. It mainly consists of two neural networks: an anatomical structure segmentation network (ASSN) and a pathological region segmentation network (PRSN). Specifically, the ASSN aims to segment the anatomical structure where the pathology may exis…

In this paper, the problem of orientation correction in cardiac MRI images is investigated and a framework for orientation recognition via deep neural networks is proposed. For multi-modality MRI, we introduce a transfer learning strategy to transfer our proposed model from single modality to multi-modality. We embed the proposed network into the orientation correction command-line tool, which can implement orientation correction on 2D DICOM and 3D NIFTI images. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is a widely applied imaging approach for diagnosis of coronary artery diseases. Attenuation maps (u-maps) derived from computed tomography (CT) are utilized for attenuation correction (AC) to improve diagnostic accuracy of cardiac SPECT. However, SPECT and CT are obtained sequentially in clinical practice, which potentially induces misregistration between the two scans. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are powerful tools for medical image registration. Previous CNN-based methods for cross-modality registration either directly concatenated t…

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) typically recruits multiple sequences (defined here as "modalities"). As each modality is designed to offer different anatomical and functional clinical information, there are evident disparities in the imaging content across modalities. Inter- and intra-modality affine and non-rigid image registration is an essential medical image analysis process in clinical imaging, as for example before imaging biomarkers need to be derived and clinically evaluated across different MRI modalities, time phases and slices. Although commonly needed in real clinical scenarios, …

Accurate segmentation of the cardiac boundaries in late gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance images (LGE-MRI) is a fundamental step for accurate quantification of scar tissue. However, while there are many solutions for automatic cardiac segmentation of cine images, the presence of scar tissue can make the correct delineation of the myocardium in LGE-MRI challenging even for human experts. As part of the Multi-Sequence Cardiac MR Segmentation Challenge, we propose a solution for LGE-MRI segmentation based on two components. First, a generative adversarial network is trained for the task o…

Automatically identifying the structural substrates underlying cardiac abnormalities can potentially provide real-time guidance for interventional procedures. With the knowledge of cardiac tissue substrates, the treatment of complex arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia can be further optimized by detecting arrhythmia substrates to target for treatment (i.e., adipose) and identifying critical structures to avoid. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a real-time imaging modality that aids in addressing this need. Existing approaches for cardiac image analysis main…

Many strides have been made in semantic segmentation of multiple classes within an image. This has been largely due to advancements in deep learning and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Features within a CNN are automatically learned during training, which allows for the abstraction of semantic information within the images. These deep learning models are powerful enough to handle the segmentation of multiple classes without the need for multiple networks. Despite these advancements, few attempts have been made to automatically segment multiple anatomical features within medical imaging d…

Acquiring annotated data at scale with rare diseases or conditions remains a challenge. It would be extremely useful to have a method that controllably synthesizes images that can correct such underrepresentation. Assuming a proper latent representation, the idea of a "latent vector arithmetic" could offer the means of achieving such synthesis. A proper representation must encode the fidelity of the input data, preserve invariance and equivariance, and permit arithmetic operations.
