We investigate the impact of cosmic filaments on the gas accretion rate, $\dot{M}_{\rm{gas}}$, of dark matter halos in filaments, based on cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. We find that for halos less massive than $10^{12.0}\ \rm{M_{\odot}}$, $\dot{M}_{\rm{gas}}$ of halos residing in prominent filaments (with width $D_{\rm{fil}}>3\ \rm{Mpc}/h$) is lower than halos residing in tenuous filaments ($D_{\rm{fil}}<3\ \rm{Mpc}/h$) by $20-30\%$ at $z=0.5$, and by a factor of 2-3 at $z=0$. However, $\dot{M}_{\rm{gas}}$ depends weakly on the physical distance between halo center and the spine of filaments from high redshift to $z=0$, only shows clear difference between the inner and outer regions in prominent filaments at $z=0$. We further probe the thermal properties of gas in prominent and tenuous filaments, which appear in relatively highly and intermediate overdense regions, respectively. The gas in prominent filaments is hotter. Around $26\%$, $38\%$ and $45\%$ of gases in prominent filaments are hotter than $10^6$ K at $z=1.0, 0.5$ and $z=0.0$ respectively. The corresponding fractions in tenuous filaments are merely $\sim 6\%, 9\%$ and $11\%$. The suppressed gas accretion rate for low-mass halos in prominent filaments at $z \lesssim 0.5$ may result from the hotter ambient gas, which could provide a physical processing mechanism to cut down the supply of gas to halos before they enter clusters. This process meets partially the need of the preheating mechanism implemented in some semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, but works only for $\sim 20\%$ of halos at $z < 1$.
Dark matter haloes are formed through hierarchical mergers of smaller haloes in large-scale cosmic environments, and thus anisotropic subhalo accretion through cosmic filaments have some impacts on halo structures. Recent studies using cosmological simulations have shown that the orientations of haloes correlate with the direction of cosmic filaments, and these correlations significantly depend on the halo mass. Using high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations, we quantified the strength of filamentary subhalo accretion for galaxy- and group-sized host haloes ($M_{\rm host}=5\times10^{1…
We investigate the alignment of galaxies and haloes relative to cosmic web filaments using the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation. We identify filaments by applying the NEXUS+ method to the mass distribution and the Bisous formalism to the galaxy distribution. Both web finders return similar filamentary structures that are well aligned and that contain comparable galaxy populations. EAGLE haloes have an identical spin alignment with filaments as their counterparts in dark matter only simulations: a complex mass dependent trend with low mass haloes spinning preferentially parallel to and high mass…
We have explored the dynamical and mass evolution of halos driven by large-scale filaments using a dark matter-only cosmological simulation with the help of a phase-space analysis. Since a non-negligible number of galaxies is expected to fall into the cluster environment through large-scale filaments, tracking how halos move around large-scale filaments can provide a more comprehensive view on the evolution of cluster galaxies. Halos exhibit orbital motions around filaments, which emerge as specific trajectories in a phase space composed of halos' perpendicular distance and velocity component …
We explore the evolution of halo spins in the cosmic web using a very large sample of dark matter haloes in the $Λ$CDM Planck-Millennium N-body simulation. We use the NEXUS+ multiscale formalism to identify the hierarchy of filaments and sheets of the cosmic web at several redshifts. We find that at all times the magnitude of halo spins correlates with the web environment, being largest in filaments, and, for the first time, we show that it also correlates with filament thickness as well as the angle between spin-orientation and the spine of the host filament. For example, massive haloes in th…
The alignment between halo spins and the cosmic web is still poorly understood despite being a widely studied topic. Here, we study this alignment within the context of tidal torque theory (TTT) and deviations from it. To this end, we analyze the evolution of the shape and spin direction of proto-haloes, i.e. of all the volume elements associated to a $z=0$ halo, with respect to the present-day filaments. We find that the major axis of proto-haloes undergoes a major change, from being strongly perpendicular to the filament spine in the initial conditions, to being preferentially aligned at the…

We make use of a high-resolution zoom-in hydrodynamical simulation to investigate the impact of filaments on galaxy formation in their residing dark matter haloes. A method based on the density field and the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm is developed to identify filaments. We show that cold and dense gas preprocessed by dark matter filaments can be further accreted into residing individual low-mass haloes in directions along the filaments. Consequently, comparing with field haloes, gas accretion is very anisotropic for filament haloes. About 30 percent of the accreted gas of a residing filament ha…
We present the discovery of diffuse optical line emission in the Centaurus cluster seen with the MUSE IFU. The unparalleled sensitivity of MUSE allows us to detect the faint emission from these structures which extend well beyond the bounds of the previously known filaments. Diffuse structures (emission surrounding the filaments, a northern shell and an extended Halo) are detected in many lines typical of the nebulae in cluster cores ([NII]$_{λ6548\&6583}$ ,[SII]$_{λ6716\&6731}$, [OI]$_{λ6300}$, [OIII]$_{λ4959\&5007}$ etc.) but are more than an order of magnitude fainter than the filaments, wi…

We study the stacked filaments connecting group-mass halo pairs, using dark-matter-only N-body simulations. We calculate the dark matter over-density profile of these stacked filaments at different redshifts as a function of the distance perpendicular to the filament axis. A four-parameter universal functional form, including three comoving scale radii and one amplitude parameter (core density), provides a good fit out to a radius of 20 cMpc/h for stacked filaments over a range of redshifts, lengths and masses. The scale radii are approximately independent of redshift but increase as power-law…
We explore how dense filament widths, when measured using different molecular species, may change as a consequence of gas accretion toward the filament. As a gas parcel falls into the filament, it will experience different density, temperature, and extinction values. The rate at which this environment changes will affect differently the abundance of different molecules. So, a molecule that forms quickly will better reflect the local physical conditions a gas parcel experiences than a slower-forming molecule. Since these differences depend on how the respective timescales compare, the different…

Halos and galaxies acquire their angular momentum during the collapse of surrounding large-scale structure. This process imprints alignments between galaxy spins and nearby filaments and sheets. Low mass halos grow by accretion onto filaments, aligning their spins with the filaments, whereas high mass halos grow by mergers along filaments, generating spins perpendicular to the filament. We search for this alignment signal using filaments identified with the "Cosmic Web Reconstruction" algorithm applied to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Main Galaxy Sample and galaxy spins from the MaNGA integral-…
We propose that cold filamentary accretion in massive galaxies at high redshift can lead to the formation of star-forming clumps in the halos of these galaxies without the presence of dark matter sub-structure. In certain cases, these clumps can be the birth places of metal poor globular-clusters (MP GCs). Using cosmological simulations, we show that narrow streams of dense gas feeding massive galaxies from the cosmic web can fragment, producing star-forming clumps. We then derive an analytical model for the properties of streams as a function of halo mass and redshift, and assess when these a…
Using a set of high-resolution simulations we study the statistical correlation of dark matter halo properties with the large-scale environment. We consider halo populations split into four Cosmic Web (CW) elements: voids, walls, filaments, and nodes. For the first time we present a study of CW effects for halos covering six decades in mass: $10^{8}-10^{14}{h^{-1}{\rm M}_{\odot}}$. We find that the fraction of halos living in various web components is a strong function of mass, with the majority of $M>10^{12}{h^{-1}{\rm M}_{\odot}}$ halos living in filaments and nodes. Low mass halos are more …
We examine how the mass assembly of central galaxies depends on their location in the cosmic web. The HORIZON-AGN simulation is analysed at z~2 using the DISPERSE code to extract multi-scale cosmic filaments. We find that the dependency of galaxy properties on large-scale environment is mostly inherited from the (large-scale) environmental dependency of their host halo mass. When adopting a residual analysis that removes the host halo mass effect, we detect a direct and non-negligible influence of cosmic filaments. Proximity to filaments enhances the build-up of stellar mass, a result in agree…
There is an emerging consensus that large amounts of gas do not shock heat in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of massive galaxies, but instead pierce deep into haloes from the cosmic web via filaments. To better resolve this process numerically, we have developed a novel `shock refinement' scheme within the moving mesh code AREPO that adaptively improves resolution around shocks on-the-fly in galaxy formation simulations. We apply this to a massive $\sim10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ halo at $z=6$ using the successful FABLE model, increasing the mass resolution by a factor of 512. With better refinement t…

We extend our previous work on simulations with the code RAMSES on accretion driven turbulence by including self-gravity and study the effects of core formation and collapse. We show that radial accretion onto filaments drives turbulent motions which are not isotropic but radially dominated. In contrast to filaments without gravity, the velocity dispersion of self-gravitating filaments does not settle in an equilibrium. Despite showing similar amounts of driven turbulence, they continually dissipate their velocity dispersion until the onset of core formation. This difference is connected to th…
We apply our recently proposed "quadratic genetic modification" approach to generating and testing the effects of alternative mass accretion histories for a single $Λ$CDM halo. The goal of the technique is to construct different formation histories, varying the overall contribution of mergers to the fixed final mass. This enables targeted studies of galaxy and dark matter halo formation's sensitivity to the smoothness of mass accretion. Here, we focus on two dark matter haloes, each with four different mass accretion histories. We find that the concentration of both haloes systematically decre…
We study the evolving environment dependence of mass accretion by dark haloes in simulations of cold and warm dark matter (CDM and WDM) cosmologies. The latter allows us to probe the nature of halo growth at scales below the WDM half-mode mass, which form an extreme regime of nonlinear collisionless dynamics and offer an excellent test-bed for ideas relating to hierarchical growth. As environmental proxies, we use the local halo-centric matter density $δ$ and tidal anisotropy $α$, as well as large-scale halo bias $b_1$. Our analysis, while reproducing known trends for environment-dependent acc…

We present theoretical expectations for infall toward supercluster-scale cosmological filaments, motivated by the Arecibo Pisces-Perseus Supercluster Survey (APPSS) to map the velocity field around the Pisces-Perseus Supercluster (PPS) filament. We use a minimum spanning tree applied to dark matter halos the size of galaxy clusters to identify 236 large filaments within the Millennium simulation. Stacking the filaments along their principal axes, we determine a well-defined, sharp-peaked velocity profile function that can be expressed in terms of the maximum infall rate $V_{\rm max}$ and the d…
We use the SPHINX suite of high-resolution cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations to study how spatially and temporally inhomogeneous reionization impacts the baryonic content of dwarf galaxies and cosmic filaments. The SPHINX simulations simultaneously model an inhomogeneous reionization, follow the escape of ionising radiation from thousands of galaxies, and resolve haloes well below the atomic cooling threshold. This makes them an ideal tool for examining how reionization impacts star formation and the gas content of dwarf galaxies. We compare simulations with and without stellar …
The standard cosmological model ($Λ$CDM) predicts the existence of the cosmic web: a distribution of matter into sheets and filaments connecting massive halos. However, observational evidence has been elusive due to the low surface brightness of the filaments. Recent deep MUSE/VLT data and upcoming observations offer a promising avenue for Ly$α$ detection, motivating the development of modern theoretical predictions. We use hydrodynamical cosmological simulations run with the AREPO code to investigate the potential detectability of large-scale filaments, excluding contributions from the halos …
High-resolution observations of the Perseus B5 "core" have previously revealed that this subsonic region actually consists of several filaments that are likely in the process of forming a quadruple stellar system. Since subsonic filaments are thought to be produced at the $\sim 0.1$ pc sonic scale by turbulent compression, a detailed kinematic study is crucial to test such a scenario in the context of core and star formation. Here we present a detailed kinematic follow-up study of the B5 filaments at a 0.009 pc resolution using the VLA and GBT combined observations fitted with multi-component …
The merging rate of cosmic structures is computed, relying on the Ansatz that they can be predicted in the initial linear density field from the coalescence of critical points with increasing smoothing scale, used here as a proxy for cosmic time. Beyond the mergers of peaks with saddle points (a proxy for halo mergers), we consider the coalescence and nucleation of all sets of critical points, including wall-saddle to filament-saddle and wall-saddle to minima (a proxy for filament and void mergers respectively), as they impact the geometry of galactic infall, and in particular filament disconn…
Herschel observations have emphasized the role of molecular filaments in star formation. However, the origin and evolution of these filaments are not yet well understood, partly because of the lack of kinematic information. To examine whether the B211/B213 filament is accreting background gas due to its gravitational potential, we produced a toy accretion model and compared its predictions to the 12CO(1--0) and 13CO(1--0) velocity patterns. We also examined the spatial distributions of Halpha, 857 GHz continuum, and HI emission to search for evidence of large-scale external effects. We estimat…
Galaxies, as well as their satellites, are known to form within the cosmic web: the large, multi-scale distribution of matter in the universe. It is known that the surrounding large scale structure (LSS) can impact and influence the formation of galaxies, e.g. the spin and shape of haloes or galaxies are correlated with the LSS and the correlation depends on halo mass or galaxy morphology. In this work, we use group and filament catalogues constructed from the SDSS DR12 to investigate the correlation between satellite systems and the large scale filaments they are located in. We find that the …
We conduct hydrodynamical cosmological zoom simulations of fourteen voids to study the ability of haloes to accrete gas at different locations throughout the voids at z = 0. Measuring the relative velocity of haloes with respect to their ambient gas, we find that a tenth of the haloes are expected to be unable to accrete external gas due to its fast flow passed them (so called 'fast flow haloes'). These are typically located near void walls. We determine that these haloes have recently crossed the void wall and are still moving away from it. their motion counter to that of ambient gas falling …
We revisit the question of 'hot mode' versus 'cold mode' accretion onto galaxies using steady-state cooling flow solutions and idealized 3D hydrodynamic simulations. We demonstrate that for the hot accretion mode to exist, the cooling time is required to be longer than the free-fall time near the radius where the gas is rotationally-supported, R_circ, i.e. the existence of the hot mode depends on physical conditions at the galaxy scale rather than on physical conditions at the halo scale. When allowing for the depletion of the halo baryon fraction relative to the cosmic mean, the longer coolin…
Context. Dense molecular filaments are ubiquituous in the interstellar medium, yet their internal physical conditions and formation mechanism remain debated. Aims. We study the kinematics and physical conditions in the Musca filament and the Chamaeleon-Musca complex to constrain the physics of filament formation. Methods. We produced CO(2-1) isotopologue maps with the APEX telescope that cut through the Musca filament. We further study a NANTEN2 $^{12}$CO(1-0) map of the Musca cloud and the HI emission of the Chamaeleon-Musca complex. Results. The Musca cloud contains multiple velocity compone…
Filament S242 is 25 pc long with massive clumps and YSO clusters concentrated in its end regions; it is considered a good example of edge collapse. We mapped this filament in the $^{12}$CO(1-0) and $^{13}$CO(1-0) lines. A large-scale velocity gradient along filament S242 has been detected; the relative velocity between the two end-clumps is $\sim$ 3 km s$^{-1}$, indicating an approaching motion between them. These signatures are consistent with the filament S242 being formed through the collapse of a single elongated entity, where an effect known as "gravitational focusing" drives the ends of …
