An integral extension of state-feedback controllers for linear time-varying plants is proposed, which preserves performance of the nominal controller in the unperturbed case. Similar to time-invariant state feedback with integral action, the controller achieves complete rejection of disturbances whose effective action on the plant is constant with respect to the control input. Moreover, bounded-input bounded-state stability with respect to arbitrary disturbances is shown. A modification for preventing controller windup as well as tuning guidelines are discussed. The efficacy of the proposed technique is demonstrated in simulation for a two-tank system that is linearized along a time-varying reference trajectory.
This paper presents a new method for dynamic output feedback stabilizing controller design for decomposable systems with switching topology and delay. Our approach consists of two steps. In the first step, we model the decomposable systems with switching topology as equivalent LPV systems with a piecewise constant parameter. In the second step, we design stabilizing output feedbacks for these LPV systems in the presence of a time-varying output delay using a trajectory-based stability analysis approach. We do not impose any constraint on the delay derivative. Finally, we illustrate our approac…
This paper investigates the design of a robust output-feedback linear parameter-varying (LPV) gain-scheduled controller for the speed regulation of a surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM). Motor dynamics is defined in the $α- β$ stationary reference frame and a parameter-varying model formulation is provided to describe the SPMSM nonlinear dynamics. In this context, a robust gain-scheduled LPV output-feedback dynamic controller is designed to satisfy the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system and meet desired performance requirements, as well as, guarantee robustness again…
It is nontrivial to achieve exponential stability even for time-invariant nonlinear systems with matched uncertainties and persistent excitation (PE) condition. In this paper, without the need for PE condition, we address the problem of global exponential stabilization of strict-feedback systems with mismatched uncertainties and unknown yet time-varying control gains. The resultant control, embedded with time-varying feedback gains, is capable of ensuring global exponential stability of parametric-strict-feedback systems in the absence of persistence of excitation. By using the enhanced Nussba…
In this paper, we present a virtual control contraction metric (VCCM) based nonlinear parameter-varying (NPV) approach to design a state-feedback controller for a control moment gyroscope (CMG) to track a user-defined trajectory set. This VCCM based nonlinear stabilization and performance synthesis approach, which is similar to linear parameter-varying (LPV) control approaches, allows to achieve exact guarantees of exponential stability and $\mathcal{L}_2$-gain performance on nonlinear systems with respect to all trajectories from the predetermined set, which is not the case with the conventio…
We develop an optimization-based framework for joint real-time trajectory planning and feedback control of feedback-linearizable systems. To achieve this goal, we define a target trajectory as the optimal solution of a time-varying optimization problem. In general, however, such trajectory may not be feasible due to , e.g., nonholonomic constraints. To solve this problem, we design a control law that generates feasible trajectories that asymptotically converge to the target trajectory. More precisely, for systems that are (dynamic) full-state linearizable, the proposed control law implicitly t…
This note is concerned with the presentation of new delay-dependent dissipativity-based convex conditions (expressed in the form of linear matrix inequalities) for the design of static output feedback (SOF) stabilizing gains for open-loop unstable discrete-time systems with input time-varying delays. A modified definition of QSR-dissipativity combined with the use of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals as storage functions and the application of Finsler's Lemma lead to the gathering of non-interactive design conditions. We show that, differently from most works dealing with controller design for t…
This paper presents a delay-dependent parameter-varying control design approach to address the automated blood pressure regulation problem in the critical patient resuscitation using closed-loop administration of vasopressors. The mean arterial pressure (MAP) response of a patient subject to the intravenous vasoactive drug treatment is modeled as a linear parameter-varying (LPV) model, where varying model parameters and varying time-delay are considered as scheduling parameters of the system. Parameter-dependent Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals are used to design an output-feedback dynamic cont…
This paper investigates the decentralized stabilization problem for a class of interconnected systems in the presence of non-triangular structural uncertainties and time-varying parameters, where each subsystem exchanges information only with its neighbors and only intermittent (rather than continuous) states and input are to be utilized. Thus far to our best knowledge, no solution exists priori to this work, despite its high prevalence in practice. Two globally decentralized adaptive control schemes are presented based on the backstepping technique, the first one is developed in a continuous …
This paper discusses the in-domain feedback stabilization of reaction-diffusion PDEs with Robin boundary conditions in the presence of an uncertain time- and spatially-varying delay in the distributed actuation. The proposed control design strategy consists of a constant-delay predictor feedback designed based on the known nominal value of the control input delay and is synthesized on a finite-dimensional truncated model capturing the unstable modes of the original infinite-dimensional system. By using a small-gain argument, we show that the resulting closed-loop system is exponentially stable…
Decentralized Dynamic Event-triggered Output-feedback Control of Stochastic Non-triangular Interconnected Systems with Unknown Time-varying Sensor Sensitivity
It is nontrivial to achieve global zero-error regulation for uncertain nonlinear systems. The underlying problem becomes even more challenging if mismatched uncertainties and unknown time-varying control gain are involved, yet certain performance specifications are also pursued. In this work, we present an adaptive control method, which, without the persistent excitation (PE) condition, is able to ensure global zero-error regulation with guaranteed output performance for parametric strict-feedback systems involving fast time-varying parameters in the feedback path and input path. The developme…
We propose a delay-dependent sampled-data output-feedback LPV control technique to address the air-fuel ratio (AFR) regulation problem in spark ignition (SI) engines. AFR control and advanced fueling strategies are essential for maximizing fuel economy while minimizing harmful exhaust emissions. The fuel path of the SI engine, as well as the three-way catalyst (TWC) simplified dynamics, have been captured by a continuous-time linear parameter-varying (LPV) system with varying time delay, where the system dynamics rely on the engine speed, defined as the system's scheduling parameter. The inter…
Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) dynamics estimation and its automated regulation could benefit the clinical and emergency resuscitation of critical patients. In order to address the variability and complexity of the MAP response of a patient to vasoactive drug infusion, a parameter-varying model with a varying time delay is considered to describe the MAP dynamics in response to drugs. The estimation of the varying parameters and the delay is performed via a Bayesian-based multiple-model square root cubature Kalman filtering approach. The estimation results validate the effectiveness of the …

This paper represents a novel online self-learning disturbance observer (SLDO) by benefiting from the combination of a type-2 neuro-fuzzy structure (T2NFS), feedback-error learning scheme and sliding mode control (SMC) theory. The SLDO is developed within a framework of feedback-error learning scheme in which a conventional estimation law and a T2NFS work in parallel. In this scheme, the latter learns uncertainties and becomes the leading estimator whereas the former provides the learning error to the T2NFS for learning system dynamics. A learning algorithm established on SMC theory is derived…
A teleoperated swarm must follow the unpredictable commands of its human operator while remaining connected. When the swarm communications are limited by distance and affected by delays, both the user input and the transmission delays endanger the connectivity of the swarm. This paper presents a constructive control strategy that overcomes both threats. The strategy modulates the intra-swarm couplings and the damping injected to each slave in the swarm based on a customized potential. Lyapunov-based set invariance analysis proves that the proposed explicit gain updating law limits the impact o…
We propose a novel change point detection approach for online learning control with full information feedback (state, disturbance, and cost feedback) for unknown time-varying dynamical systems. We show that our algorithm can achieve a sub-linear regret with respect to the class of Disturbance Action Control (DAC) policies, which are a widely studied class of policies for online control of dynamical systems, for any sub-linear number of changes and very general class of systems: (i) matched disturbance system with general convex cost functions, (ii) general system with linear cost functions. A system is called prescribed-time attractive if its solution converges at an arbitrary user-defined finite time. In this note, necessary and sufficient conditions are developed for the prescribed-time attractivity of linear time-varying (LTV) systems. It is proved that the frozen-time eigenvalues of a prescribed-time attractive LTV system have negative real parts when the time is sufficiently close to the convergence moment. This result shows that the ubiquitous singularity problem of prescribed-time attractive LTV systems can be avoided without instability effects by switching to the corresp…

If embedded with command filter properly, the implementation of backstepping design could be dramatically simplified. In this paper, we introduce a command filter with time-varying gain and integrate it with backstepping design, resulting in a new set of backstepping control algorithms with low complexity even for high-order strict-feedback systems. Furthermore, with the aid of "softening" sign function based compensator, zero-error output tracking is ensured while at the same time maintaining prescribed transient performance. Numerical simulation is carried out to verify the effectiveness and…
For systems in canonical form with nonvanishing uncertainties/disturbances, this work presents an approach to full state regulation within prescribed time irrespective of initial conditions. By introducing the smooth hyperbolic-tangent-like function, a nonlinear and time-varying state feedback control scheme is constructed, which is further extended to address output feedback based prescribed-time regulation by invoking the prescribed-time observer, all are applicable over the entire operational time zone. As an alternative to full state regulation within user-assignable time interval, the pro…
It is an interesting open problem to achieve adaptive prescribed-time control for strict-feedback systems with unknown and fast or even abrupt time-varying parameters. In this paper we present a solution with the aid of several design and analysis innovations. First, by using a spatiotemporal transformation, we convert the original system operational over finite time interval into one operational over infinite time interval, allowing for Lyapunov asymptotic design and recasting prescribed-time stabilization on finite time domain into asymptotic stabilization on infinite time domain. Second, to…
This paper discusses the stability analysis of linear parameter varying systems with a parameter-dependent delay where the parameters are assumed to be stochastic piecewise constants under spontaneous Poissonian jumps. Based on stochastic Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals, we also provide sufficient synthesis conditions for the gain-scheduled state-feedback controller with memory in terms of parameter-dependent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Such synthesis conditions are computationally intractable due to the presence of integral terms. However, we show that these LMIs can be equivalently re…
In this report, we analyze and design feedback policies for discrete-time Piecewise-Affine (PWA) systems with uncertainty in both the affine dynamics and the polytopic partition. The main idea is to utilise the Difference-of-Convex (DC) decomposition of continuous PWA systems to derive quadratic Lyapunov functions as stability certificates and stabilizing affine policies in a higher dimensional space. When projected back to the state space, we obtain time-varying PWQ Lyapunov functions and time-varying PWA feedback policies.
This paper considers a time-varying optimization problem associated with a network of systems, with each of the systems shared by (and affecting) a number of individuals. The objective is to minimize cost functions associated with the individuals' preferences, which are unknown, subject to time-varying constraints that capture physical or operational limits of the network. To this end, the paper develops a distributed online optimization algorithm with concurrent learning of the cost functions. The cost functions are learned on-the-fly based on the users' feedback (provided at irregular interv…
