There has been a dramatic increase in the volume of videos and their related content uploaded to the internet. Accordingly, the need for efficient algorithms to analyse this vast amount of data has attracted significant research interest. An action recognition system based upon human body motions has been proven to interpret videos contents accurately. This work aims to recognize activities of daily living using the ST-GCN model, providing a comparison between four different partitioning strategies: spatial configuration partitioning, full distance split, connection split, and index split. To achieve this aim, we present the first implementation of the ST-GCN framework upon the HMDB-51 dataset. We have achieved 48.88 % top-1 accuracy by using the connection split partitioning approach. Through experimental simulation, we show that our proposals have achieved the highest accuracy performance on the UCF-101 dataset using the ST-GCN framework than the state-of-the-art approach. Finally, accuracy of 73.25 % top-1 is achieved by using the index split partitioning strategy.

Understanding human actions is a crucial problem for service robots. However, the general trend in Action Recognition is developing and testing these systems on structured datasets. That's why this work presents a practical Skeleton-based Action Recognition framework which can be used in realistic scenarios. Our results show that although non-augmented and non-normalized data may yield comparable results on the test split of the dataset, it is far from being useful on another dataset which is a manually collected data.

Skeleton-based human action recognition has attracted much attention with the prevalence of accessible depth sensors. Recently, graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have been widely used for this task due to their powerful capability to model graph data. The topology of the adjacency graph is a key factor for modeling the correlations of the input skeletons. Thus, previous methods mainly focus on the design/learning of the graph topology. But once the topology is learned, only a single-scale feature and one transformation exist in each layer of the networks. Many insights, such as multi-scale i…
A skeleton representation of the human body has been proven to be effective for this task. The skeletons are presented in graphs form-like. However, the topology of a graph is not structured like Euclidean-based data. Therefore, a new set of methods to perform the convolution operation upon the skeleton graph is presented. Our proposal is based upon the ST-GCN framework proposed by Yan et al. [1]. In this study, we present an improved set of label mapping methods for the ST-GCN framework. We introduce three split processes (full distance split, connection split, and index split) as an alternat…

We introduce SynSE, a novel syntactically guided generative approach for Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL). Our end-to-end approach learns progressively refined generative embedding spaces constrained within and across the involved modalities (visual, language). The inter-modal constraints are defined between action sequence embedding and embeddings of Parts of Speech (PoS) tagged words in the corresponding action description. We deploy SynSE for the task of skeleton-based action sequence recognition. Our design choices enable SynSE to generalize compositionally, i.e., recognize sequences whose action …

We present a simple, yet effective and flexible method for action recognition supporting multiple sensor modalities. Multivariate signal sequences are encoded in an image and are then classified using a recently proposed EfficientNet CNN architecture. Our focus was to find an approach that generalizes well across different sensor modalities without specific adaptions while still achieving good results. We apply our method to 4 action recognition datasets containing skeleton sequences, inertial and motion capturing measurements as well as \wifi fingerprints that range up to 120 action classes. …

In this paper, we tackle the problem of 24 hours-monitoring patient actions in a ward such as "stretching an arm out of the bed", "falling out of the bed", where temporal movements are subtle or significant. In the concerned scenarios, the relations between scene layouts and body kinematics (skeletons) become important cues to recognize actions; however they are hard to be secured at a testing stage. To address this problem, we propose a kinematic-layout-aware random forest which takes into account the kinematic-layout (\ie layout and skeletons), to maximize the discriminative power of depth i…
A human action can be seen as transitions between one's body poses over time, where the transition depicts a temporal relation between two poses. Recognizing actions thus involves learning a classifier sensitive to these pose transitions as well as to static poses. In this paper, we introduce a novel method called transitions forests, an ensemble of decision trees that both learn to discriminate static poses and transitions between pairs of two independent frames. During training, node splitting is driven by alternating two criteria: the standard classification objective that maximizes the dis…
Temporal feature extraction is an essential technique in video-based action recognition. Key points have been utilized in skeleton-based action recognition methods but they require costly key point annotation. In this paper, we propose a novel temporal feature extraction module, named Key Point Shifts Embedding Module ($KPSEM$), to adaptively extract channel-wise key point shifts across video frames without key point annotation for temporal feature extraction. Key points are adaptively extracted as feature points with maximum feature values at split regions, while key point shifts are the spat…
Object Skeletonization is the process of extracting skeletal, line-like representations of shapes. It provides a very useful tool for geometric shape understanding and minimal shape representation. It also has a wide variety of applications, most notably in anatomical research and activity detection. Several mathematical algorithmic approaches have been developed to solve this problem, and some of them have been proven quite robust. However, a lesser amount of attention has been invested into deep learning solutions for it. In this paper, we use a 2-stage variant of the famous U-Net architectu…

Many skeletal action recognition models use GCNs to represent the human body by 3D body joints connected body parts. GCNs aggregate one- or few-hop graph neighbourhoods, and ignore the dependency between not linked body joints. We propose to form hypergraph to model hyper-edges between graph nodes (e.g., third- and fourth-order hyper-edges capture three and four nodes) which help capture higher-order motion patterns of groups of body joints. We split action sequences into temporal blocks, Higher-order Transformer (HoT) produces embeddings of each temporal block based on (i) the body joints, (i…

We propose a new approach for paragraph recognition in document images by spatial graph convolutional networks (GCN) applied on OCR text boxes. Two steps, namely line splitting and line clustering, are performed to extract paragraphs from the lines in OCR results. Each step uses a beta-skeleton graph constructed from bounding boxes, where the graph edges provide efficient support for graph convolution operations. With only pure layout input features, the GCN model size is 3~4 orders of magnitude smaller compared to R-CNN based models, while achieving comparable or better accuracies on PubLayNe…

Online action detection (OAD) is challenging since 1) robust yet computationally expensive features cannot be straightforwardly used due to the real-time processing requirements and 2) the localization and classification of actions have to be performed even before they are fully observed. We propose a new random forest (RF)-based online action detection framework that addresses these challenges. Our algorithm uses computationally efficient skeletal joint features. High accuracy is achieved by using robust convolutional neural network (CNN)-based features which are extracted from the raw RGBD i…
