Many massive early-type galaxies host central radio sources and hot X-ray atmospheres indicating the presence of radio-mechanical active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. The duty cycle and detailed physics of the radio-mode AGN feedback is still a matter of debate. To address these questions, we present 1-2 GHz Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio observations of a sample of the 42 nearest optically and X-ray brightest early-type galaxies. We detect radio emission in 41/42 galaxies. However, the galaxy without a radio source, NGC 499, has recently been detected at lower frequencies by the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR). Furthermore, 27/42 galaxies in our sample host extended radio structures and 34/42 sources show environmental interactions in the form of X-ray cavities. We find a significant correlation between the radio flux density and the largest linear size of the radio emission and between the radio power and the luminosity of the central X-ray point-source. The central radio spectral indices of the galaxies span a wide range of values, with the majority of the systems having steep spectra and the rest flat spectra. These results are consistent with AGN activity, where the central radio sources are mostly switched on, thus the duty cycle is very high. 7/14 galaxies with point-like radio emission (Fanaroff-Riley Class 0; FR 0) also show X-ray cavities indicating that, despite the lack of extended radio structures at 1-2 GHz, these AGN do launch jets capable of inflating lobes and cavities.
We have compiled a sample of 14 of the optically brightest radio-quiet quasars ($m_{i}$~$\le$~17.5 and $z$~$\ge$~1.9) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 quasar catalog that have C IV mini-BALs present in their spectra. X-ray data for 12 of the objects were obtained via a Chandra snapshot survey using ACIS-S, while data for the other two quasars were obtained from archival XMM-Newton observations. Joint X-ray spectral analysis shows the mini-BAL quasars have a similar average power-law photon index ($Γ\approx1.9$) and level of intrinsic absorption ($N_H \lesssim 8\times 10^{21} \ {\…
We report on the VERITAS detection of very-high-energy (VHE, $E > 100~\mathrm{GeV}$) $γ$-ray emission from the optically bright quasar OJ 287 which is located at a redshift of z = 0.306. OJ 287 has been observed to display regular optical outbursts with a period of approximately 12 years, with the last major optical outburst having occurred in 2015. To explain this periodicity, models involving a binary supermassive black hole system at the core of OJ 287, or a helical jet, have been developed. Motivated by elevated Swift-XRT count rates, VERITAS observed OJ 287 in February 2017, and detected …
Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occur when a star orbiting a massive black hole is sufficiently close to be tidally ripped apart by the black hole. AT 2022cmc is the first relativistic TDE that was observed (and discovered) as an optically bright and fast transient, showing signatures of non-thermal radiation induced by a jet which is oriented towards the Earth. In this work, we present optical linear and circular polarization measurements, observed with VLT/FORS2 in the $R$-band (which corresponds to the blue/UV part of the spectrum in rest frame), $\sim$ 7.2 and $\sim$ 12.2 rest-frame days af…
Estimation of the black hole mass in bright X-ray sources of nearby galaxies is crucial to the understanding of these systems and their formation. However, the present allowed black hole mass range spans five order of magnitude (10Msun < M < 10^5 Msun) with the upper limit obtained from dynamical friction arguments. We show that the absence of a detectable optical counterpart for some of these sources, can provide a much more stringent upper limit. The argument is based only on the assumption that the outer regions of their accretion disks is a standard one. Moreover, such optically dark X-ray…

We obtained thermal equilibrium solutions for optically thin, two-temperature black hole accretion disks incorporating magnetic fields. The main objective of this study is to explain the bright/hard state observed during the bright/slow transition of galactic black hole candidates. We assume that the energy transfer from ions to electrons occurs via Coulomb collisions. Bremsstrahlung, synchrotron, and inverse Compton scattering are considered as the radiative cooling processes. In order to complete the set of basic equations, we specify the magnetic flux advection rate. We find magnetically su…
VLASS tidal disruption events with optical flares II: discovery of two TDEs with intermediate width Balmer emission lines and connections to the ambiguous extreme coronal line emitters
We model the projected angular two-point correlation function (2PCF) of obscured and unobscured quasars selected using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), at a median redshift of $z \sim 1$ using a five-parameter Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) parameterization, derived from a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation by Chatterjee et al. The HOD parameterization was previously used to model the 2PCF of optically selected quasars and X-ray bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) at $z \sim 1$. The current work shows that a single HOD parameterization can be used to model the population o…
We present a search for radio transients in the field of the bright radio source 3C 286 using archival observations from the Very Large Array. These observations span 23 years and include 1852 epochs at 1.4 GHz in the C and D configurations. We find no transients in the field. The sensitivity of the observations is limited by dynamic range effects in the images. At large flux densities ($> 0.2$ Jy), single epoch observations provide a strong limit on the transient surface density. At flux densities near the dynamic range threshold, we use the requirement that transient sources must appear in c…
We report the results of an extensive radio-continuum observing campaign of host galaxies of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The goal of this survey was to search for optically obscured star formation, possibly indicative of a population of young short-GRB progenitors. Our sample comprises the hosts and host-galaxy candidates of 16 short-GRBs from 2005 to 2015, corresponding to roughly 1/3 of the presently known ensemble of well-localized short bursts. Eight GRB fields were observed with ATCA (at 5.5 and 9.0 GHz), and eight fields with the VLA (mostly at 5.5 GHz). The observations typically ach…
Narrow band images covering strong emission lines are efficient to survey supernova remnants (SNRs) in nearby galaxies. Using the narrow band images provided by the Local Group Galaxy Survey we searched for SNRs in M33. Culling the objects with enhanced [SII]/Ha and round morphology in the continuum-subtracted Ha and [SII] images, we produce a list of 199 sources. Among them 79 are previously unknown. Their progenitor and morphology types were classified. A majority of the sample (170 objects) are likely remnants of core-collapse SNe, and 29 are remnants of Type Ia SNe. The cumulative size dis…
We present the results of flux density, spectral index, and polarization intra-night monitoring studies of a sample of eight optically bright blazars, carried out by employing several small to moderate aperture (0.4\,m to 1.5\,m diameter) telescopes fitted with CCDs and polarimeters located in Europe, India, and Japan. The duty cycle of flux variability for the targets is found to be $\sim 45$ percent, similar to that reported in earlier studies. The computed two-point spectral indices are found to be between 0.65 to 1.87 for our sample, comprised of low- and intermediate frequency peaked blaz…

Wide-field H-alpha images of the Galactic plane have revealed a new supernova remnant (SNR) nearly three degrees in diameter centred at l = 107.0, b = +9.0. Deep and higher resolution H-alpha and [O III] 5007 Ang images show dozens of H-alpha filaments along the remnant's northern, western, and southwestern limbs, but few [O III] bright filaments. The nebula is well detected in the H-alpha Virginia Tech Spectral-Line Survey images, with many of its brighter filaments even visible on Digital Sky Survey images. Low-dispersion spectra of several filaments show either Balmer dominated, non-radiati…
In this work, a nearby luminous AGN sample is selected from HST, where only sources with both X-ray emission observed by \textit{Chandra/XMM-Newton} and radio flux detected by VLA/VLBA/VLBI/MERLIN are adopted to keep high precision. We get a sample of 30 luminous AGNs finally, which consist of 11 RLAGN and 19 RQAGN. It is found that the relationship between $R_{\rm {UV}}$ and $α_{\rm {ox}}$, which was firstly reported by Li & Xie (2017) in LLAGN, and other relationships are all absent in RLAGN, probably due to the complex physical process therein. Our results indicate that the X-ray emission f…

We present long term optical variability studies of bright X-ray sources in four nearby elliptical galaxies with {\it Chandra} Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer array (ACIS-S) and {\it Hubble Space Telescope (HST)} Advanced Camera for Surveys observations. Out of the 46 bright (X-ray counts $> 60$) sources that are in the common field of view of the {\it Chandra} and {\it HST} observations, 34 of them have potential optical counterparts, while the rest of them are optically dark. After taking into account of systematic errors, estimated using the field optical sources as reference, we find tha…
We report the results from a deep Suzaku observation of 4C 50.55 (IGR J 21247+5058), the brightest broad-line radio galaxy in the hard X-ray (> 10 keV) sky. The simultaneous broad band spectra over 1-60 keV can be represented by a cut-off power law with two layers of absorption and a significant reflection component from cold matter with a solid angle of Ω/2π\approx 0.2. A rapid flux rise by ~ 20% over 2 \times 10^4 sec is detected in the 2-10 keV band. The spectral energy distribution suggests that there is little contribution to the total X-ray emission from jets. Applying a thermal Comptoni…
