Realization and manipulation of parity-time (PT) symmetry in multidimensional systems are highly desirable for exploring nontrivial physics and uncovering exotic phenomena in non-Hermitian systems. Here, we report the first experimental observation of partial PT (pPT) symmetry in a cesium atomic gas coupled with laser fields, where a two-dimensional pPT-symmetric optical potential for probe laser beam is created. A transition of the pPT symmetry from an unbroken phase to a broken one is observed through changing the beam-waist ratio of the control and probe laser beams, and the domains of unbroken, broken, and non-pPT phases are also discriminated unambiguously. Moreover, we develop a technique to precisely determine the location of the exceptional point of the pPT symmetry breaking by measuring the asymmetry degree of the probe-beam intensity distribution. The findings reported here pave the way for controlling multidimensional laser beams in non-Hermitian systems via laser-induced atomic coherence, and have potential applications for designing new types of light amplifiers and attenuators
We report the implementation and performance of a double servo-loop for intensity and phase-difference active stabilization of a dual-frequency vertical external--cavity surface-emitting laser (DF-VECSEL) for coherent population trapping (CPT) of cesium atoms in the framework of compact atomic clocks. In--phase fully correlated pumping of the two laser modes is identified as the best scheme for intensity noise reduction, and an analytical model allows the optimization of the active stabilization strategy. Optical phase-locking the beat-note to a local oscillator leads to a phase noise level be…
We theoretically and experimentally study the noise of a class-A dual-frequency vertical external cavity surface emitting laser operating at Cesium clock wavelength. The intensity noises of the two orthogonally polarized modes and the phase noise of their beatnote are investigated. The intensity noises of the two modes and their correlations are well predicted by a theory based on coupled rate equations. The phase noise of the beatnote is well described by considering both thermal effects and the effect of phase-amplitude coupling. The good agreement between theory and experiment indicates pos…
Based on the multi-level model, we have calculated light shifts for Zeeman states of hyperfine levels of cesium (Cs) 6S1/2 ground state and 6P3/2 excited state. The magic-wavelength linearly-polarized optical dipole trap (ODT) for Cs 6S1/2 F=4, mF=+4 - 6P3/2 F'=5, mF=+5 transition is experimentally constructed and characterized by using the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of trapped single Cs atoms. The magic wavelength is 937.7 nm which produces almost the same light shift for 6S1/2 F=4, mF=+4 ground state and 6P3/2 F'=5, mF=+5 excited state with linearly-polarized ODT laser beam. Compared …
We report on studies of simultaneous continuous-wave mirrorless lasing on multiple optical transitions, realized by pumping hot cesium vapor with laser light resonant with the 6$S_{1/2}\rightarrow 8$P$_{3/2}$ transition. The multiplicity of decay paths for the excited atoms to their ground state is responsible for the emergence of lasing in a number of transitions, observed here in at least seven wavelengths in the infrared (IR), and at two wavelengths in the blue. We study the properties of the fields generated in the cesium vapor, such as optical power, directionality and optical linewidth.
We demonstrate single transverse-mode operation of broad-area coupled waveguide lasers enabled by parity-time (PT) symmetry. The PT symmetric laser operates on coupled waveguide cavities with electrically tuned gain and loss. Such counterintuitive waveguide design enables PT symmetric breaking, causing unique mode selection and ultimately enabling single mode operation. By electrically tuning the loss in the loss region of the coupled waveguide cavity, several different PT-symmetric regimes are analyzed theoretically, and the corresponding PT symmetric phase transition is demonstrated experime…
We report a fully-correlated multi-mode pumping architecture optimized for dramatic noise reduction of a class-A dual-frequency Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VECSEL). Thanks to amplitude division of a laser diode, the two orthogonally polarized modes emitted by the VECSEL oscillating at 852 nm are separately pumped by two beams exhibiting fully in--phase correlated intensity noises. This is shown to lead to very strong and in-phase correlations between the two lasing modes intensities. As a result, the phase noise power spectral density of the RF beat note generated by the t…
The exploration of quantum-inspired symmetries in optical systems has spawned promising physics and provided fertile ground for developing devices exhibiting exotic functionalities. Founded on the anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry that is enabled by both spatial and temporal interplay between gain and loss, we demonstrate theoretically and numerically bi-color lasing in a single micro-ring resonator with spatiotemporal modulation along its azimuthal direction. In contrast to conventional multi-mode lasers that have mixed-frequency output, our laser exhibits stable, demultiplexed, tunable bi-colo…
We propose a new scheme for ultra-sensitive laser gyroscopes that utilizes the physics of exceptional points. By exploiting the properties of such non-Hermitian degeneracies, we show that the rotation-induced frequency splitting becomes proportional to the square root of the gyration speed- thus enhancing the sensitivity to low angular rotations by orders of magnitudes. In addition, at its maximum sensitivity limit, the measurable spectral splitting is independent of the radius of the rings involved. Our work paves the way towards a new class of ultra-sensitive miniature ring laser gyroscopes …
Parity-time ($\cal PT$) symmetric lasers have attracted considerable attention lately due to their promising applications and intriguing properties, such as free spectral range doubling and single-mode lasing. In this work we discuss nonlinear modal interactions in these laser systems under steady state conditions, and we demonstrate that several gain clamping scenarios can occur for lasing operation in the $\cal PT$-symmetric and $\cal PT$-broken phases. In particular, we show that, depending on the system's design and the external pump profile, its operation in the nonlinear regime falls int…
Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, and particularly parity-time (PT) and anti-PT symmetric Hamiltonians, play an important role in many branches of physics, from quantum mechanics to optical systems and acoustics. Both the PT and anti-PT symmetries are specific instances of a broader class known as anyonic-PT symmetry, where the Hamiltonian and the PT operator satisfy a generalized commutation relation. Here, we study theoretically these novel symmetries and demonstrate them experimentally in coupled lasers systems. We resort to complex coupling of mixed dispersive and dissipative nature, which allow…
The ability to manipulate cavity resonant modes is of critical importance in laser physics and applications. By exploiting the parity time (PT) symmetry, we propose and experimentally realize a single-mode FP laser with improved output power and high-speed modulation have been demonstrated. The proposed PT symmetric laser consists of two coupled structurally identical FP resonators. The gain and loss in two FP resonators can be manipulated independently by changing the injection currents. In the PT symmetric FP laser, single-mode operation is accomplished by selectively breaking of PT symmetry…
Parity-time (PT) symmetry is a new method to get single mode operation in lasers, mostly, micro-ring lasers. In this study, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an electrically pumped PT symmetric Fabry-Perot (FP) laser which can work with a mode selection. The proposed laser could achieve the PT symmetric condition by an electrical manipulation of the interplay between gain and loss in two FP resonators. The single mode lasing is demonstrated at 1574.6nm with a 20.81dB sidemode suppression ratio.
We propose a time-dependent partial differential equation model to investigate the dynamical behavior of the parity-time (PT) symmetric laser during the nonlinear stage of its operation. This model incorporates physical effects such as the refractive index distribution, dispersion, material loss, nonlinear gain saturation and self-phase modulation. We show that when the loss is weak, multiple stable steady states and time-periodic states of light exist above the lasing threshold, rendering the laser multi-mode. However, when the loss is strong, only a single stable steady state of broken PT sy…
A high degree of chaos synchronization among transverse mode pairs with parity-symmetric polarizations was demonstrated in a laser-diode pumped thin-slice c-cut Nd: GdVO4 laser. The amplitude correlation coefficient greater than R > 0.994 resulted from a non-reversing mirror symmetric-polarization-dependent structural change in the modal patterns, where chaotic dynamics of the whole system consisting of qualitatively different dynamics, which depend on the polarization crossing angle, resembled that of a chaotic single mode laser. A self-organized sender-receiver type of chaos synchronization …
Atomic comagnetometers, which measure the spin precession frequencies of overlapped species simultaneously, are widely applied to search for exotic spin-dependent interactions. Here we propose and implement an all-optical single-species Cs atomic comagnetometer based on the optical free induction decay (FID) signal of Cs atoms in hyperfine levels $F_g=3~\&~4$ within the same atomic ensemble. We experimentally show that systematic errors induced by magnetic field gradients and laser fields are highly suppressed in the comagnetometer, but those induced by asynchronous optical pumping and drift o…
We propose a novel supersymmetry-inspired scheme for achieving robust single mode lasing in arrays of coupled microcavities, based on factorizing a given array Hamiltonian into its "supercharge" partner array. Pumping a single sublattice of the partner array preferentially induces lasing of an unpaired zero mode. A chiral symmetry protects the zero mode similar to 1D topological arrays, but it need not be localized to domain walls or edges. We demonstrate single mode lasing over a wider parameter regime by designing the zero mode to have a uniform intensity profile.
Anisotropic mirrors are used to form a laser resonator exhibiting non-Hermitian, parity-time (PT) symmetric, polarization states. The relative angle of the two mirrors principal axes is used to control the degree of non-hermiticity. A sharp symmetry-breaking transition is observed at a specific angle, called the exceptional point, where the two states coalesce into a single polarization state and the interference pattern produced by counter-propagating (CP) waves vanishes. At a smaller angle, in the unbroken PT symmetry regime, the polarization state experiencing higher losses is suppressed. I…
An 852nm nanosecond laser pulse chain with a high on/off ratio is generated by chopping a continuous-wave laser beam using a Mach-Zehnder-type electro-optic intensity modulator(MZ-EOIM). The detailed dependence of the MZ-EOIM's on/off ratio on various parameters is characterized. By optimizing the incident beam polarization and stabilizing the MZ-EOIM temperature, a static on/off ratio of 12600:1 is achieved. The dynamic on/off ratios versus the pulse repetition rate and the pulse duty cycle are measured and discussed. The high-on/off-ratio nanosecond pulsed laser system was used in a triggere…
