We propose a semi-supervised network for wide-angle portraits correction. Wide-angle images often suffer from skew and distortion affected by perspective distortion, especially noticeable at the face regions. Previous deep learning based approaches need the ground-truth correction flow maps for training guidance. However, such labels are expensive, which can only be obtained manually. In this work, we design a semi-supervised scheme and build a high-quality unlabeled dataset with rich scenarios, allowing us to simultaneously use labeled and unlabeled data to improve performance. Specifically, our semi-supervised scheme takes advantage of the consistency mechanism, with several novel components such as direction and range consistency (DRC) and regression consistency (RC). Furthermore, different from the existing methods, we propose the Multi-Scale Swin-Unet (MS-Unet) based on the multi-scale swin transformer block (MSTB), which can simultaneously learn short-distance and long-distance information to avoid artifacts. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to the state-of-the-art methods and other representative baselines. In portraits, eyeglasses may occlude facial regions and generate cast shadows on faces, which degrades the performance of many techniques like face verification and expression recognition. Portrait eyeglasses removal is critical in handling these problems. However, completely removing the eyeglasses is challenging because the lighting effects (e.g., cast shadows) caused by them are often complex. In this paper, we propose a novel framework to remove eyeglasses as well as their cast shadows from face images. The method works in a detect-then-remove manner, in which eyeglasses and cast shadows a…

Existing portrait matting methods either require auxiliary inputs that are costly to obtain or involve multiple stages that are computationally expensive, making them less suitable for real-time applications. In this work, we present a light-weight matting objective decomposition network (MODNet) for portrait matting in real-time with a single input image. The key idea behind our efficient design is by optimizing a series of sub-objectives simultaneously via explicit constraints. In addition, MODNet includes two novel techniques for improving model efficiency and robustness. First, an Efficien…

Self-supervised learning has been widely applied to train high-quality vision transformers. Unleashing their excellent performance on memory and compute constraint devices is therefore an important research topic. However, how to distill knowledge from one self-supervised ViT to another has not yet been explored. Moreover, the existing self-supervised knowledge distillation (SSKD) methods focus on ConvNet based architectures are suboptimal for ViT knowledge distillation. In this paper, we study knowledge distillation of self-supervised vision transformers (ViT-SSKD). We show that directly dist…

The mainstream crowd counting methods usually utilize the convolution neural network (CNN) to regress a density map, requiring point-level annotations. However, annotating each person with a point is an expensive and laborious process. During the testing phase, the point-level annotations are not considered to evaluate the counting accuracy, which means the point-level annotations are redundant. Hence, it is desirable to develop weakly-supervised counting methods that just rely on count-level annotations, a more economical way of labeling. Current weakly-supervised counting methods adopt the C…

This paper presents Generative Adversarial Talking Head (GATH), a novel deep generative neural network that enables fully automatic facial expression synthesis of an arbitrary portrait with continuous action unit (AU) coefficients. Specifically, our model directly manipulates image pixels to make the unseen subject in the still photo express various emotions controlled by values of facial AU coefficients, while maintaining her personal characteristics, such as facial geometry, skin color and hair style, as well as the original surrounding background. In contrast to prior work, GATH is purely d…
Visual domain adaptation (DA) seeks to transfer trained models to unseen, unlabeled domains across distribution shift, but approaches typically focus on adapting convolutional neural network architectures initialized with supervised ImageNet representations. In this work, we shift focus to adapting modern architectures for object recognition -- the increasingly popular Vision Transformer (ViT) -- and modern pretraining based on self-supervised learning (SSL). Inspired by the design of recent SSL approaches based on learning from partial image inputs generated via masking or cropping -- either …

The video action segmentation task is regularly explored under weaker forms of supervision, such as transcript supervision, where a list of actions is easier to obtain than dense frame-wise labels. In this formulation, the task presents various challenges for sequence modeling approaches due to the emphasis on action transition points, long sequence lengths, and frame contextualization, making the task well-posed for transformers. Given developments enabling transformers to scale linearly, we demonstrate through our architecture how they can be applied to improve action alignment accuracy over…

Tissue phenotyping is a fundamental task in learning objective characterizations of histopathologic biomarkers within the tumor-immune microenvironment in cancer pathology. However, whole-slide imaging (WSI) is a complex computer vision in which: 1) WSIs have enormous image resolutions with precludes large-scale pixel-level efforts in data curation, and 2) diversity of morphological phenotypes results in inter- and intra-observer variability in tissue labeling. To address these limitations, current efforts have proposed using pretrained image encoders (transfer learning from ImageNet, self-sup…

Video transformers have recently emerged as a competitive alternative to 3D CNNs for video understanding. However, due to their large number of parameters and reduced inductive biases, these models require supervised pretraining on large-scale image datasets to achieve top performance. In this paper, we empirically demonstrate that self-supervised pretraining of video transformers on video-only datasets can lead to action recognition results that are on par or better than those obtained with supervised pretraining on large-scale image datasets, even massive ones such as ImageNet-21K. Since tra…
We apply an ensemble of modified TransBTS, nnU-Net, and a combination of both for the segmentation task of the BraTS 2021 challenge. In fact, we change the original architecture of the TransBTS model by adding Squeeze-and-Excitation blocks, an increasing number of CNN layers, replacing positional encoding in Transformer block with a learnable Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) embeddings, which makes Transformer adjustable to any input size during inference. With these modifications, we are able to largely improve TransBTS performance. Inspired by a nnU-Net framework we decided to combine it with our…
We resolve the ill-posed alpha matting problem from a completely different perspective. Given an input portrait image, instead of estimating the corresponding alpha matte, we focus on the other end, to subtly enhance this input so that the alpha matte can be easily estimated by any existing matting models. This is accomplished by exploring the latent space of GAN models. It is demonstrated that interpretable directions can be found in the latent space and they correspond to semantic image transformations. We further explore this property in alpha matting. Particularly, we invert an input portr…

Photorealistic editing of portraits is a challenging task as humans are very sensitive to inconsistencies in faces. We present an approach for high-quality intuitive editing of the camera viewpoint and scene illumination in a portrait image. This requires our method to capture and control the full reflectance field of the person in the image. Most editing approaches rely on supervised learning using training data captured with setups such as light and camera stages. Such datasets are expensive to acquire, not readily available and do not capture all the rich variations of in-the-wild portrait …

Inverse rendering is the problem of decomposing an image into its intrinsic components, i.e. albedo, normal and lighting. To solve this ill-posed problem from single image, state-of-the-art methods in shape from shading mostly resort to supervised training on all the components on either synthetic or real datasets. Here, we propose a new self-supervised training paradigm that 1) reduces the need for full supervision on the decomposition task and 2) takes into account the relighting task. We introduce new self-supervised loss terms that leverage the consistencies between multi-lit images (image…

Vision transformers require a huge amount of labeled data to outperform convolutional neural networks. However, labeling a huge dataset is a very expensive process. Self-supervised learning techniques alleviate this problem by learning features similar to supervised learning in an unsupervised way. In this paper, we propose a self-supervised technique PatchRot that is crafted for vision transformers. PatchRot rotates images and image patches and trains the network to predict the rotation angles. The network learns to extract both global and local features from an image. Our extensive experimen…
We study the training of Vision Transformers for semi-supervised image classification. Transformers have recently demonstrated impressive performance on a multitude of supervised learning tasks. Surprisingly, we show Vision Transformers perform significantly worse than Convolutional Neural Networks when only a small set of labeled data is available. In this paper, we propose self-supervised training for video transformers using unlabeled video data. From a given video, we create local and global spatiotemporal views with varying spatial sizes and frame rates. Our self-supervised objective seeks to match the features of these different views representing the same video, to be invariant to spatiotemporal variations in actions. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed approach is the first to alleviate the dependency on negative samples or dedicated memory banks in Self-supervised Video Transformer (SVT). Further, owing to the flexibility …

Although convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved remarkable progress in weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS), the effective receptive field of CNN is insufficient to capture global context information, leading to sub-optimal results. Inspired by the great success of Transformers in fundamental vision areas, this work for the first time introduces Transformer to build a simple and effective WSSS framework, termed WegFormer. Unlike existing CNN-based methods, WegFormer uses Vision Transformer (ViT) as a classifier to produce high-quality pseudo segmentation masks. To this en…
Vision Transformer (ViT) suffers from data scarcity in semi-supervised learning (SSL). To alleviate this issue, inspired by masked autoencoder (MAE), which is a data-efficient self-supervised learner, we propose Semi-MAE, a pure ViT-based SSL framework consisting of a parallel MAE branch to assist the visual representation learning and make the pseudo labels more accurate. The MAE branch is designed as an asymmetric architecture consisting of a lightweight decoder and a shared-weights encoder. We feed the weakly-augmented unlabeled data with a high masking ratio to the MAE branch and reconstru…
Recent mainstream weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) approaches are mainly based on Class Activation Map (CAM) generated by a CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) based image classifier. In this paper, we propose a novel transformer-based framework, named Semantic Guided Activation Transformer (SemFormer), for WSSS. We design a transformer-based Class-Aware AutoEncoder (CAAE) to extract the class embeddings for the input image and learn class semantics for all classes of the dataset. The class embeddings and learned class semantics are then used to guide the generation of activation …

In this paper, we question if self-supervised learning provides new properties to Vision Transformer (ViT) that stand out compared to convolutional networks (convnets). Beyond the fact that adapting self-supervised methods to this architecture works particularly well, we make the following observations: first, self-supervised ViT features contain explicit information about the semantic segmentation of an image, which does not emerge as clearly with supervised ViTs, nor with convnets. Second, these features are also excellent k-NN classifiers, reaching 78.3% top-1 on ImageNet with a small ViT. …

Self-supervised monocular depth estimation is an attractive solution that does not require hard-to-source depth labels for training. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have recently achieved great success in this task. However, their limited receptive field constrains existing network architectures to reason only locally, dampening the effectiveness of the self-supervised paradigm. In the light of the recent successes achieved by Vision Transformers (ViTs), we propose MonoViT, a brand-new framework combining the global reasoning enabled by ViT models with the flexibility of self-supervised m…

We are witnessing a modeling shift from CNN to Transformers in computer vision. In this work, we present a self-supervised learning approach called MoBY, with Vision Transformers as its backbone architecture. The approach basically has no new inventions, which is combined from MoCo v2 and BYOL and tuned to achieve reasonably high accuracy on ImageNet-1K linear evaluation: 72.8% and 75.0% top-1 accuracy using DeiT-S and Swin-T, respectively, by 300-epoch training. The performance is slightly better than recent works of MoCo v3 and DINO which adopt DeiT as the backbone, but with much lighter tri…
We present a new self-supervised pre-training of Vision Transformers for dense prediction tasks. It is based on a contrastive loss across views that compares pixel-level representations to global image representations. This strategy produces better local features suitable for dense prediction tasks as opposed to contrastive pre-training based on global image representation only. Furthermore, our approach does not suffer from a reduced batch size since the number of negative examples needed in the contrastive loss is in the order of the number of local features. We demonstrate the effectiveness…

Currently, for crowd counting, the fully supervised methods via density map estimation are the mainstream research directions. However, such methods need location-level annotation of persons in an image, which is time-consuming and laborious. Therefore, the weakly supervised method just relying upon the count-level annotation is urgently needed. Since CNN is not suitable for modeling the global context and the interactions between image patches, crowd counting with weakly supervised learning via CNN generally can not show good performance. Weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) with only image-level supervision is a challenging task. Most existing methods exploit Class Activation Maps (CAM) to generate pixel-level pseudo labels for supervised training. However, due to the local receptive field of Convolution Neural Networks (CNN), CAM applied to CNNs often suffers from partial activation -- highlighting the most discriminative part instead of the entire object area. In order to capture both local features and global representations, the Conformer has been proposed to combine a visual transformer branch with a CNN branch.…

Different from such superficial supervision at the video level, we propose a self-supervised hierarchical pre-training scheme incorporated into a …
