Following the discovery of a new family of kagomé prototypical materials with structure AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs), there has been heightened interest in studying the correlation-driven electronic phenomena in these kagomé lattice systems. The study of these materials has gone beyond magneto-transport measurements to reveal exciting features such as Dirac bands, anomalous Hall effect, bulk superconductivity with $T_c$ $\sim$ 0.9 K-2.5 K, and the observation of charge density wave instabilities, suggesting an intertwining of topological physics and new quantum orders. Moreover, very recent works on numerous types of experiments have appeared further examining the unconventional superconductivity and the exotic electronic states found within these kagomé materials. Theories on the strong interactions that play a role in these systems have been proposed to shed light on the nature of these topological charge density waves. In this brief review, we summarize these recent experimental findings and theoretical proposals, and envision the materials as new platforms to study the interplay between topological physics and strongly-correlated electronic systems.
We use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) to elucidate the atomically resolved electronic structure in strongly correlated topological kagome magnet Mn$_3$Sn. In stark contrast to its broad single-particle electronic structure, we observe a pronounced resonance with a Fano line shape at the Fermi level resembling the many-body Kondo resonance. We find that this resonance does not arise from the step edges or atomic impurities, but the intrinsic kagome lattice. Moreover, the resonance is robust against the perturbation of a vector magnetic field, but broadens substantially with …
Owing to the unusual geometry of kagome lattices-lattices made of corner-sharing triangles-their electrons are useful for studying the physics of frustrated, correlated and topological quantum electronic states. In the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, the magnetic and electronic structures of kagome lattices are further entangled, which can lead to hitherto unknown spin-orbit phenomena. Here we use a combination of vector-magnetic-field capability and scanning tunnelling microscopy to elucidate the spin-orbit nature of the kagome ferromagnet Fe3Sn2 and explore the associated exotic corr…
A hallmark of strongly correlated quantum materials is the rich phase diagram resulting from competing and intertwined phases with nearly degenerate ground state energies. A well-known example is the copper oxides, where a charge density wave (CDW) is ordered well above and strongly coupled to the magnetic order to form spin-charge separated stripes that compete with superconductivity. Recently, such rich phase diagrams have also been revealed in correlated topological materials. In two-dimensional kagome lattice metals consisting of corner-sharing triangles, the geometry of the lattice can pr…
Low energy inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals of the kagome spin liquid compound ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2 (Herbertsmithite) reveals antiferromagnetic correlations between impurity spins for energy transfers E < 0.8 meV (~J/20). The momentum dependence differs significantly from higher energy scattering which arises from the intrinsic kagome spins. The low energy fluctuations are characterized by diffuse scattering near wavevectors (1 0 0) and (0 0 3/2), which is consistent with antiferromagnetic correlations between pairs of nearest neighbor Cu impurities on adjacent triangular (Zn) interlay…
Quantum materials with tunable correlated and/or topological electronic states, such as the electronic Kagome lattice, provide an ideal platform to study the exotic quantum properties. However, the real-space investigations on the correlated electronic Kagome lattice have been rarely reported. Herein, we report on the electronic Kagome lattice emerging in the correlated charge-density-wave (CDW) state of 1T-TaS$_2$ at ~200 K via variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (VT-STM). This emergent Kagome lattice can be considered a fractional electron-filling superstructure with reduced t…
Recently Han et al. have provided an analysis of the observed behavior of $\rm ZnCu_{3}(OH)_6Cl_2$ Herbertsmithite based on a separation of the contributions to its thermodynamic properties due to impurities from those due to the kagome lattice. The authors developed an impurity model to account for the experimental data and claimed that it is compatible with the presence of a small spin gap in the kagome layers. We argue that the model they advocate is problematic, conflicting with the intrinsic properties of $\rm ZnCu_{3}(OH)_6Cl_2$ as observed and explained in recent experimental and theore…

The kagome lattice, whose electronic valence band (VB) structure includes two Dirac bands and one flat band, offers a rich space to realise tuneable topological and strongly correlated electronic phases in two-dimensional (2D) and layered materials. While strong electron correlations have been observed in inorganic kagome crystals, they remain elusive in organic systems. The latter offer versatile synthesis protocols via molecular self-assembly and metal-ligand coordination. Here, we report the synthesis of a 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) where di-cyano-anthracene (DCA) molecules form a kag…
Strongly correlated Fermi systems are among the most intriguing and fundamental systems in physics, whose realization in some compounds is still to be discovered. We show that herbertsmithite ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2 can be viewed as a strongly correlated Fermi system whose low temperature thermodynamic in magnetic fields is defined by a quantum critical spin liquid. Our calculations of its thermodynamic properties are in good agreement with recent experimental facts and allow us to reveal their scaling behavior which strongly resembles that observed in HF metals and 2D 3He.
Strongly correlated Kagome magnets are promising candidates for achieving controllable topological devices owing to the rich interplay between inherent Dirac fermions and correlation-driven magnetism. Here we report tunable local magnetism and its intriguing control of topological electronic response near room temperature in the Kagome magnet Fe3Sn2 using small angle neutron scattering, muon spin rotation, and magnetoresistivity measurement techniques. The average bulk spin direction and magnetic domain texture can be tuned effectively by small magnetic fields. Magnetoresistivity, in response,…

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are self-assemblies of metal ions and organic ligands, provide a tunable platform to search a new state of matter. A two-dimensional (2D) perfect kagome lattice, whose geometrical frustration is a key to realizing quantum spin liquids, has been formed in the $π$-${d}$ conjugated 2D MOF [Cu$_{3}$(C$_{6}$S$_{6}$)]$_{n}$ (Cu-BHT). The recent discovery of its superconductivity with a critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of 0.25\,kelvin raises fundamental questions about the nature of electron pairing. Here, we show that Cu-BHT is a strongly correlated unconventio…
The kagome lattice of transition metal atoms provides an exciting platform to study electronic correlations in the presence of geometric frustration and nontrivial band topology, which continues to bear surprises. In this work, using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we discover a cascade of different symmetry-broken electronic states as a function of temperature in a new kagome superconductor, CsV3Sb5. At a temperature far above the superconducting transition Tc ~ 2.5 K, we reveal a tri-directional charge order with a 2a0 period that breaks the translation symmetry of the l…
Electronic properties of kagome lattice have drawn great attention recently. In associate with flat-band induced by destructive interference and Dirac cone-type dispersion, abundant exotic phenomena have been theoretically discussed. The material realization of electronic kagome lattice is a crucial step towards comprehending kagome physics and achieving novel quantum phases. Here, combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, transport measurements and first-principle calculations, we expose a planar flat-band in paramagnetic YCr6Ge6 as a typical signature of electronic kagome lattice.…
The manipulation of topological states in quantum matter is an essential pursuit of fundamental physics and next-generation quantum technology. Here we report the magnetic manipulation of Weyl fermions in the kagome spin-orbit semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, observed by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. We demonstrate the exchange collapse of spin-orbit-gapped ferromagnetic Weyl loops into paramagnetic Dirac loops under suppression of the magnetic order. We further observe that topological Fermi arcs disappear in the paramagnetic phase, suggesting the annihilation of exchange-split Weyl…

The field of topological electronic materials has seen rapid growth in recent years, in particular with the increasing number of weakly interacting systems predicted and observed to host topologically non-trivial bands. Given the broad appearance of topology in such systems, it is expected that correlated electronic systems should also be capable of hosting topologically non-trivial states. Interest in correlated platforms is heightened by the prospect that collective behavior therein may give rise to new types of topological states and phenomena not possible in non-interacting systems. Howeve…
A current challenge in condensed matter physics is the realization of strongly correlated, viscous electron fluids. These fluids are not amenable to the perturbative methods of Fermi liquid theory, but can be described by holography, that is, by mapping them onto a weakly curved gravitational theory via gauge/gravity duality. The canonical system considered for realizations has been graphene, which possesses Dirac dispersions at low energies as well as significant Coulomb interactions between the electrons. In this work, we show that Kagome systems with electron fillings adjusted to the Dirac …
There have been extensive recent developments on kagome metals, such as T$_m$X$_n$ (T= Fe, Co and X= Sn, Ge) and $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ Cs, K, Rb). An emerging issue is the nature of correlated phases when topologically \textit{non-trivial} bands cross the Fermi level. Here, we consider an extended Hubbard model on the kagome lattice in the presence of spin-orbit couplings, involving a Kramer's pair of bands that have opposite Chern numbers and are isolated in the band structure. We construct an effective model in a time-reversal (T) symmetric lattice description. We determine the correlated pha…
Analogous to the Hall effect, the Nernst effect is the generation of a transverse voltage due to a temperature gradient in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The Nernst effect has promise for thermoelectric applications and as a probe of electronic structure. In magnetic materials, a so-called anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is possible in zero magnetic field. Here we report a colossal ANE reaching 23 $μ$V/K in the ferromagnetic metal UCo$_{0.8}$Ru$_{0.2}$Al. Uranium's $5f$ electrons provide strong electronic correlations that lead to narrow bands, which are a known route to produci…

We give an overview of recent work on charge degrees of freedom of strongly correlated electrons on geometrically frustrated lattices. Special attention is paid to the checkerboard lattice, i.e., the two-dimensional version of a pyrochlore lattice and to the kagome lattice. For the checkerboard lattice it is shown that at half filling when spin degrees of freedom are neglected and quarter filling when they are included excitations with fractional charges $\pm$e/2 may exist. The same holds true for the three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice. In the former case the fractional charges are confined.…
The layered vanadium antimonides AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) are a recently discovered family of topological kagome metals with a rich phenomenology of strongly correlated electronic phases including charge order and superconductivity. Understanding how the singularities inherent to the kagome electronic structure are linked to the observed many-body phases is a topic of great interest and relevance. Here, we combine angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory to reveal multiple kagome-derived van Hove singularities (vHs) coexisting near the Fermi level of CsV3Sb5 and an…
The recent discovery of novel charge density wave (CDW) and pair density wave (PDW) in kagomé lattice superconductors $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs) hints at unexpected time-reversal symmetry breaking correlated and topological states whose physical origin and broader implications are not understood. Here, we make conceptual advances toward a mechanism behind the striking observations and new predictions for novel macroscopic phase coherent quantum states. We show that the metallic CDW state with circulating loop currents is a doped orbital Chern insulator near van Hove filling. The emergent …

By means of the density functional theory in combination with the dynamical mean-field theory, we tried to examine the electronic structure of hexagonal FeGe, in which the Fe atoms form a quasi-2D layered Kagome lattice. We predict that it is a representative Kagome metal characterized by orbital selective Dirac fermions and extremely flat bands. Furthermore, Fe's 3$d$ electrons are strongly correlated. They exhibit quite apparent signatures of electronic correlation induced by Hund's rule coupling, such as sizable differentiation in band renormalization, non-Fermi-liquid behavior, spin-freezi…

The kagome lattice based on 3d transition metals is a versatile platform for novel topological phases hosting symmetry-protected electronic excitations and exotic magnetic ground states. However, the paradigmatic states of the idealized two-dimensional (2D) kagome lattice - Dirac fermions and topological flat bands - have not been simultaneously observed, partly owing to the complex stacking structure of the kagome compounds studied to date. Here, we take the approach of examining FeSn, an antiferromagnetic single-layer kagome metal with spatially-decoupled kagome planes. Using polarization- a…

We investigate the real-space profile of effective Coulomb interactions in correlated kagome materials. By particularizing to KV$_3$Sb$_5$, Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, FeSn, and Ni$_3$In, we analyze representative cases that exhibit a large span of correlation-mediated phenomena, and contrast them to prototypical prevoskite transition metal oxides. From our constrained random phase approximation studies we find that the on-site interaction strength in kagome metals not only depends on the screening processes at high energy, but also on the low-energy hybriziation profile of the electronic density of st…

Transition-metal-based kagome materials at van Hove filling are a rich frontier for the investigation of novel topological electronic states and correlated phenomena. To date, in the idealized two-dimensional kagome lattice, topologically nontrivial Dirac surface states (TDSSs) have not been unambiguously observed, and the manipulation of TDSSs and van Hove singularities (VHSs) remains largely unexplored. Here, we reveal TDSSs originating from a Z${_2}$ bulk topology and identify multiple VHSs near the Fermi level ($\textit{E}$${_F}$) in magnetic kagome material GdV${_6}$Sn${_6}$. Using in-sit…
