We show that a Bose-Einstein condensate consisting of dark excitons forms in GaAs coupled quantum wells at low temperatures. We find that the condensate extends over hundreds of micrometers, well beyond the optical excitation region, and is limited only by the boundaries of the mesa. We show that the condensate density is determined by spin flipping collisions among the excitons, which convert dark excitons into bright ones. The suppression of this process at low temperature yields a density buildup, manifested as a temperature-dependent blueshift of the exciton emission line. Measurements under in-plane magnetic field allows us to preferentially modify the bright excitons density, and determine their role in the system dynamics. We find that their interaction with the condensate leads to its depletion. We present a simple rate equations model, which well-reproduces the observed temperature, power, and magnetic field dependence of the exciton density.
Spin-flip Raman scattering of electrons and heavy-holes is studied for resonant excitation of neutral and charged excitons in a CdTe/Cd$_{0.63}$Mg$_{0.37}$Te quantum well. The spin-flip scattering is characterized by its dependence on the incident and scattered light polarization as well as on the magnetic field strength and orientation. Model schemes of electric-dipole allowed spin-flip Raman processes in the exciton complexes are compared to the experimental observations, from which we find that lowering of the exciton symmetry, time of carrier spin relaxation, and mixing between electron st…
The band structure of type-I (In,Al)As/AlAs quantum dots with band gap energy exceeding 1.63 eV is indirect in momentum space, leading to long-lived exciton states with potential applications in quantum information. Optical access to these excitons is provided by mixing of the $Γ$- and X-conduction band valleys, from which control of their spin states can be gained. This access is used here for studying the exciton spin-level structure by resonant spin-flip Raman scattering, allowing us to accurately measure the anisotropic hole and isotropic electron $g$ factors. The spin-flip mechanisms for …
We perform a theoretical study of radiative decay of dark intravalley excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers. This decay necessarily involves an electronic spin flip. The intrinsic decay mechanism due to interband spin-flip dipole moment perpendicular to the monolayer plane, gives a rate about 100--1000 times smaller than that of bright excitons. However, we find that this mechanism also introduces an energy splitting due to a local field effect, and the whole oscillator strength is contained in the higher-energy component, while the lowest-energy state remains dark and needs a…
Exciton-polaritons are mixed light-matter quasiparticles. We have developed a statistical model describing stochastic exciton-photon transitions within a condensate of exciton polaritons. We show that the exciton-photon correlator depends on the "hidden variable" which characterizes the rate of exciton-photon transformations in the condensate. We discuss implications of this effect for the quantum statistics of photons emitted by polariton lasers.
Silicon nanocrystals are studied by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. After laser excitation the bright and dark exciton ground state levels are populated at random, but subsequently the decay curves reveal a thermalization between these levels. The characteristic thermalization time is found to be approximately 100 ns for temperatures below 100 K and surprisingly increases for higher temperatures. The decay curves are analyzed using a simple two-state model for the bright and dark exciton ground states.
We propose a scheme for the controllable preparation of a cold indirect exciton condensate using dipolaritonic setup with an optical pumping. Dipolaritons are bosonic quasiparticles which arise from the coupling between cavity photon (C), direct exciton (DX), and indirect exciton (IX) modes, and appear in a double quantum well embedded in a semiconductor microcavity. Controlling the detuning between modes of the system, the limiting cases of exciton-polaritons and indirect excitons can be realized. Our protocol relies on the initial preparation of an exciton polariton condensate for the far bl…
We analyze the nonlinear transport properties of a bilayer exciton condensate that is contacted by four metallic leads by calculating the full counting statistics of electron transport for arbitrary system parameters. Despite its formal similarity to a superconductor the transport properties of the exciton condensate turn out to be completely different. We recover the generic features of exciton condensates such as counterpropagating currents driven by excitonic Andreev reflections and make predictions for nonlinear transconductance between the layers as well as for the current (cross)correlat…
We present a generic model for the description of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates, suited for the modelling of non-resonantly pumped polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity. The excitation spectrum and scattering of the non-equilibrium condensate with a defect are discussed.
With exciton lifetime much extended in semiconductor quantum-well structures, their transport and Bose-Einstein condensation become a focus of research in recent years. We reveal a momentum-space gauge field in the exciton center-of-mass dynamics due to Berry phase effects. We predict spin-dependent topological transport of the excitons analogous to the anomalous Hall and Nernst effects for electrons. We also predict spin-dependent circulation of a trapped exciton gas and instability in an exciton condensate in favor of vortex formation.
Moiré exciton features tunable Dirac dispersion and spatially dependent optical selection rules. With the long lifetime due to its interlayer nature, it is promising to realize a Bose-Einstein condensation of moiré excitons. Here we study the properties of moiré exciton condensate within the mean-field theory, with special focus on exciton-exciton interaction effect on the nonlinear Bloch band and Bloch waves of exciton condensate in moiré potential. We find the nonlinear dispersion of the moiré exciton condensate exhibits complex loop structure induced by exciton-exciton interaction. A nonlin…
The population dynamics of dark and bright excitons in (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots is studied by two-color pump-probe spectroscopy in an external magnetic field. With the field applied in Faraday geometry and at T<20 K, the dark excitons decay on a ten nanoseconds time scale unless the magnetic field induces a resonance with a bright exciton state. At these crossings their effective lifetime is drastically shortened due to spin flips of either electron or hole by which the dark excitons are converted into bright ones. Due to the quasielastic character we attribute the origin of these flips to …
We study collective electronic excitations in graphene in the integer quantum Hall regime, concentrating mainly on excitations with spin reversal such as spin-flip and spin-wave excitations. We show that these excitations are correctly accounted for in the time-dependent Hartree-Fock and strong magnetic field approximations, in contrast to spin-conserving (magneto-exciton) modes which involve a strong Landau-level mixing at non-zero wave vectors. The collective excitations are discussed in view of prominent theorems, such as Kohn's and Larmor's. Whereas the latter remains valid in graphene and…
We present a theory of bilayer two-dimensional electron systems that host a spatially indirect exciton condensate when in thermal equilibrium. Equilibrium bilayer exciton condensates (BXCs) are expected to form when two nearby semiconductor layers are electrically isolated, and when the conduction band of one layer is brought close to degeneracy with the valence band of a nearby layer by varying bias or gate voltages. BXCs are characterized by spontaneous inter-layer phase coherence and counterflow superfluidity. The bilayer system we consider is composed of two transition metal dichalcogenide…
A simple model, describing the dynamics of the non-equilibrium pseudospin of a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons, has been formulated. It explains the suppression of spin splitting of a non-equilibrium polariton condensate in an external magnetic field, the optical alignment, and the conversion of alignment into orientation of polaritons. It has been shown that inverse effects are possible, to wit, the spontaneous circular polarization and the enhancement of spin splitting of a non-equilibrium condensate of polaritons in the absence of external field.
We investigate a bilayer system of critical HgTe quantum wells each featuring a spin-degenerate pair of massless Dirac fermions. In the presence of an electrostatic inter-layer Coulomb coupling, we determine the exciton condensate order parameter of the system self-consistently. Calculating the bulk topological $\mathbb Z_2$ invariant of the resulting mean field Hamiltonian, we discover a novel time reversal symmetric topological exciton condensate state coined the helical topological exciton condensate. We argue that this phase can exist for experimentally relevant parameters. Interestingly, …
I study the edge states of the topological exciton condensate formed by Coulomb interaction between two parallel surfaces of a strong topological insulator. When the condensate is contacted by superconductors with a π phase shift across the two surfaces, a pair of counter-propagating Majorana modes close the gap at the boundary. I propose a nano-structured system of topological insulators and superconductors to realize unpaired Majorana fermions. The Majorana signal can be used to detect the formation of the topological exciton condensate. The relevant experimental signatures as well as implic…
We present a theoretical analysis of a spin-dependent multicomponent condensate in two dimensions. The case of a condensate of resonantly photoexcited excitons having two different spin orientations is studied in detail. The energy and the chemical potentials of this system depend strongly on the spin polarization . When electrons and holes are located in two different planes, the condensate can be either totally spin polarized or spin unpolarized, a property that is measurable. The phase diagram in terms of the total density and electron-hole separation is discussed.
We propose a way to directly excite compact localized condensates in a nearly flat band of the exciton-polariton Lieb lattice by short Laguerre-Gaussian pulses and investigate the dynamics of these condensates in the presence of repulsive polariton-polariton interaction and distributed losses in the lattice. The evolution of a low-density compact polariton condensate shows fast Rabi oscillations between its excitonic and photonic components, with slow beatings of the Rabi oscillation amplitude. Both oscillations and beatings are suppressed at higher condensate densities due to polariton-polari…
We analyze the spin structure of the ground state of four-component exciton condensates in coupled quantum wells as a function of spin-dependent interactions and applied magnetic field. The four components correspond to the degenerate exciton states characterized by $\pm2$ and $\pm1$ spin projections to the axis of the structure. We show that in a wide range of parameters, the chemical potential of the system increases as a function of magnetic field, which manifests a pseudo-diamagnetism of the system. The transitions to polarized two- and one-component condensates can be of the first-order i…
We show that recent paper by Flayac et al. [Phys. Rev. B 81, 045318 (2010) and arXiv:0911.1650] is misleading. We demonstrate the existence of static half-quantum vortices in exciton-polariton condensates and calculate the warping of their polarization texture produced by TE-TM splitting of polariton band.
We report on the calculation of the cyclotron spin-flip excitation (CSFE) in a spin-polarized quantum Hall system at unit filling. This mode has a double-exciton component which contributes to the CSFE correlation energy but can not be found by means of a mean field approach. The result is compared with available experimental data.
Technological advances allow for tunable lateral confinement of cold dipolar excitons in coupled quantum wells. We consider theoretically the Josephson effect between exciton condensates in two traps separated by a weak link. The flow of the exciton supercurrent is driven by the dipole energy difference between the traps. The Josephson oscillations may be observed after ensemble average of the time correlation of photons separately emitted from the two traps. The fringe visibility is controlled by the trap coupling and is robust against quantum and thermal fluctuations.
We theoretically analyze the synchronized and desynchronized phases of coupled non-equilibrium polariton condensates within mean field theory. An analytical condition for the existence of a synchronized phase is derived for two coupled wells. The case of many wells in a 2D disordered geometry is studied numerically. The relation to recent experiments on polariton condensation in CdTe microcavities is discussed.
The collective decay of excitons from initial Bose-Einstein condensate state is investigated theoretically. As practically more interesting case we consider excitons of the yellow series in the semiconductor cuprous oxide where we have collective photon and phonon assisted decay of excitons. It is shown that because of intrinsic instability of recoilless two-boson decay of Bose-Einstein condensate, the spontaneously emitted bosonic pairs are amplified leading to an exponential buildup of a macroscopic population into the certain modes. The collective decay rate has a nonlinear dependence on th…
We show that the condensation of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities in an applied magnetic field manifests itself in the quenching of the Zeeman splitting of an elliptically polarized condensate. The circular polarization degree of a localized condensate with a finite number of particles increases as a function of the magnetic field with a step-like behavior. The width of each polarization step is fixed by the polariton-polariton interaction constants and the number of steps is fixed by the number of polaritons in the condensate. The magnetic susceptibility of the condensate dep…
Bilayer electron-hole systems with unequal electron and hole densities are expected to have exciton condensate ground states with spontaneous spin-polarization in both conduction and valence bands. In the absence of spin-orbit and electron-hole exchange interactions there is no coupling between the spin-orientations in the two quantum wells. In this article we show that Rashba spin-orbit interactions lead to unconventional magnetic anisotropies, whose strength we estimate, and to ordered states with unusual quasiparticle spectra.
The onset of exciton condensation in a topological insulator thin film was recently predicted. We calculate the critical temperature for this transition, taking into account screening effects. Furthermore, we show that the proximity to this transition can be probed by measuring the Coulomb drag resistivity between the surfaces of the thin film as a function of temperature. This resistivity shows an upturn upon approaching the exciton-condensed state.
We study nonlinear dynamics of exciton-polaritons in an incoherently pumped semiconductor microcavity with embedded weak-contrast lattice and coupled to an exciton reservoir. We elucidate fundamental features of non-equilibrium exciton-polariton condensate trapped in one-dimensional periodical potential close to zero momentum (so-called "Zero-state") and to the state at the boundary of Brillouin zone ("$π$-state"). Within the framework of the mean-field theory, we identify different regimes of both relaxation and oscillatory dynamics of coherent exciton-polaritons governed by superpositions of…
The dephasing time of the lowest bright exciton in CdSe/ZnS wurtzite quantum dots is measured from 5 K to 170 K and compared with density dynamics within the exciton fine structure using a sensitive three-beam four-wave-mixing technique unaffected by spectral diffusion. Pure dephasing via acoustic phonons dominates the initial dynamics, followed by an exponential zero-phonon line dephasing of 109 ps at 5 K, much faster than the ~10 ns exciton radiative lifetime. The zero-phonon line dephasing is explained by phonon-assisted spin-flip from the lowest bright state to dark exciton states. This is…
We explore non-analytic quantum phase dynamics of dipolar exciton condensates formed in a system of 1D quantum layers subjected to voltage quenches. We map the exciton condensate physics on to the pseudospin ferromagnet model showing an additional oscillatory metastable and paramagnetic phase beyond the well-known ferromagnetic phase by utilizing a time-dependent, non-perturbative theoretical model. We explain the coherent phase of the exciton condensate in quantum Hall bilayers, observed for currents equal to and slightly larger than the critical current, as a stable time-dependent phase char…
The quantum Hall state at total filling factor $ν_T=1$ in bilayer systems realizes an exciton condensate and exhibits a zero-bias tunneling anomaly, similar to the Josephson effect in the presence of fluctuations. In contrast to conventional Josephson junctions, no Fraunhofer diffraction pattern has been observed, due to disorder induced topological defects, so-called merons. We consider interlayer tunneling in the presence of microwave radiation, and find Shapiro steps in the tunneling current-voltage characteristic despite the presence of merons. Moreover, the Josephson oscillations can also…
We investigate the spin polarization of localized exciton-polariton condensates. We demonstrate the presence of an effective magnetic field leading to the formation of elliptically polarized condensates. We show that this synthetic field has an entirely photonic origin, which we believe is unique for the CdTe-based microcavities. Moreover, the degree of spin polarization of localized polariton condensates in samples with magnetic ions depends on the excitation power or polarization of the non-resonant excitation laser. In an external magnetic field, the semimagnetic condensate spontaneously bu…
We develop a theory of interlayer tunneling in the exciton condensate of bilayer quantum Hall systems, which predicts strongly enhanced, but finite, tunneling conductance peaks near zero bias even at zero temperature. It is emphasized that, though this strongly enhanced tunneling originates from spontaneous interlayer phase coherence, it is fundamentally not the Josephson effect. Because of strong interlayer correlation, the bilayer system behaves as a single system so that conventional tunneling theories treating two layers as independent systems are not applicable. Based on our theory, we co…
We study the exciton condensate in zero temperature limit in a special class of electron-hole bilayer systems adjacent to insulating ferromagnetic films. With the self-consistent mean-field approximation, we find that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the electron and hole layers can induce the p \pm ip or p pairing states depending on the different magnetization of the overlapped ferromagnetic films. Correspondingly, the topologically nontrivial or trivial phases emerge. Furthermore, in the topologically nontrivial phase, the quasiparticle excitations of the U(1) vortex are attached to fra…
We analyse the interaction of exciton and exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavity with a coherent acoustic wave. An analytical solution for the dispersion of excitations of coupled condensate-phonon system is found in the approximation of k-independent interactions. Accounting for k-dependence results in a stronger modification of the dispersion, and even in the appearance of the "roton instability" region.
We study the screened dynamics of the nonequilibrium excitonic consensate forming in a bulk WSe$_{2}$ when illuminated by coherent light resonant with the lowest-energy exciton. Intervalley scattering causes electron migration from the optically populated K valley to the conduction band minimum at $Σ$. Due to the electron-hole unbalance at the K point a plasma of quasi-free holes develops, which efficiently screens the interaction of the remaining excitons. We show that this plasma screening causes an ultrafast melting of the nonequilibrium consensate and that during melting coherent excitons …
We investigate the spin-nonconserving relaxation channel of excitons by their couplings with phonons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides using $\textit{ab initio}$ approaches. Combining $\text{GW}$-Bethe-Salpeter equation method and density functional perturbation theory, we calculate the electron-phonon and exciton-phonon coupling matrix elements for the spin-flip scattering in monolayer WSe$_{\text{2}}$, and further analyze the microscopic mechanisms influencing these scattering strengths. We find that phonons could produce effective in-plane magnetic fields which flip spin o…
A semiconductor quantum dot (QD) is an attractive resource to generate polarization-entangled photon pairs. We study the excitonic spin precession (flip-flop) in a family of QDs with different excitonic fine-structure splitting (FSS) and its impact on the entanglement of photons generated from the excitonic-biexcitonic radiative cascade. Our results reveal that coherent processes leave the time post-selected entanglement of QDs with finite FSS unaffected while changing the eigenstates of the system. The flip-flop's precession is observed via quantum tomography through anomalous oscillations of…
We describe the robustness of an excitonic condensate in double layer graphene against layer density fluctuations and the associated charge inhomogeneity, and discuss the implications for observing the condensate under current experimental conditions. We solve the mean-field equations for a finite imbalance in the Fermi energies in each layer and utilize the results in two phenomenological models for inhomogeneity. We find that the stability of the excitonic condensate against density fluctuations is strongly dependent on the size of the excitonic gap, and that transport experiments (such as C…
Self-rotation occurs in an exciton-polariton condensate in a two-dimensional semiconductor microcavity pumped by a nonresonant Gaussian laser beam. A wave packet of the condensate spontaneously rotates around the center of the pumped region at a constant frequency breaking the rotation symmetry of the system. When two self-rotating condensates are created with an appropriate distance, synchronization occurs between the dynamics of the self-rotating condensates.
We investigate an optically trapped exciton-polariton condensate and observe temporal coherence beyond 1~ns duration. Due to the reduction of the spatial overlap with the thermal reservoir of excitons, the coherence time of the trapped condensate is more than an order of magnitude longer than that of an untrapped condensate. This ultralong coherence enables high precision spectroscopy of the trapped condensate, and we observe periodic beats of the field correlation function due to a fine energy splitting of two polarization modes of the condensate. Our results are important for realizing polar…
We analyze theoretically the dynamics of degenerate condensate of cold indirect excitons. We account for both linear spin dependent terms arising from spin-orbit interaction of Rashba and Dresselhaus types and non-linear terms transforming a pair of bright excitons into a pair of dark ones. We show that both terms should lead to the qualitative changes in the dynamics of cold exciton droplets in the real space and time.
We show that the "dark condensates" that arise when excitons form a Bose-Einstein condensate in a material with an indirect bandgap are not completely dark to optical emission. Rather, such states are "leaky condensates" in which optical emission is facilitated by many-body interactions. We analyze the properties of these leaky condensates in the context of twisted bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, which host strongly interacting excitons and an indirect bandgap. We show that this interaction-driven "leaky" emission dominates photoluminescence at low temperatures, with distinctive …
We investigate an all-optical microscale planar lensing technique based on coherent fluids of semiconductor cavity exciton-polariton condensates. Our theoretical analysis underpins the potential in using state-of-the-art spatial light modulation of nonresonant excitation beams to guide and focus polariton condensates away from their pumping region. The nonresonant excitation profile generates an excitonic reservoir that blueshifts the polariton mode and provides gain, which can be spatially tailored into lens shapes at the microscale to refract condensate waves. We propose several different av…
The nonlinear dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dipolar excitons trapped in an external confining potential in coupled quantum wells is analysed. It is demonstrated that under typical experimental conditions the dipolar excitons BEC can be described by a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation with the local interaction between the excitons, which depends on the exciton distribution function. It is shown that, if the system is pumped at sufficiently high frequencies, a steady turbulent state can be formed.
Bilayer electron-hole systems undergo excitonic condensation when the distance d between the layers is smaller than the typical distance between particles within a layer. All excitons in this condensate have a fixed dipole moment which points perpendicular to the layers, and therefore this condensate of dipoles couples to external electromagnetic fields. We study the transport properties of this dipolar condensate system based on a phenomenological model which takes into account contributions from the condensate and quasiparticles. We discuss, in particular, the drag and counterflow transport,…
Condensation of bosons causes spectacular phenomena such as superfluidity or superconductivity. Understanding the nature of the condensed particles is crucial for active control of such quantum phases. Fascinating possibilities emerge from condensates of light-matter coupled excitations, such as exciton polaritons, photons hybridized with hydrogen-like bound electron-hole pairs. So far, only the photon component has been resolved, while even the mere existence of excitons in the condensed regime has been challenged. Here we trace the matter component of polariton condensates by monitoring intr…
We demonstrate that perfect conversion between charged supercurrents in superconductors and neutral supercurrents in electron-hole pair condensates is possible via a new Andreev-like scattering mechanism. As a result, when two superconducting circuits are coupled through a bilayer exciton condensate, the superflow in both layers is drastically modified. Depending on the phase biases the supercurrents can be completely blocked or exhibit perfect drag.
We theoretically analyze exciton-photon oscillatory dynamics within a homogenous polariton gas in presence of energy detuning between the cavity and quantum well modes. Whereas pure Rabi oscillations consist of the particle exchange between the photon and excitons states in the polariton system without any oscillations of the phases of the two sub-condensates, we demonstrate that any non-zero detuning results in oscillations of the relative phase of the photon and exciton macroscopic wave functions. Different initial conditions reveal a variety of behaviors of the relative phase between the tw…
Bose condensation is responsible for many of the most spectacular effects in physics because it can promote quantum behavior from the microscopic to the macroscopic world. Bose condensates can be distinguished by the condensing object; electron-electron Cooper-pairs are responsible for superconductivity, Helium atoms for superfluidity, and ultracold alkali atoms in vapors for coherent matter waves. Electron-hole pair (exciton) condensation has maintained special interest because it has been difficult to realize experimentally, and because exciton phase coherence is never perfectly spontaneous.…
We describe the behavior of a repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensate of indirect dipolar exciton gas in a double quantum well (QW) system under external static or dynamic electric fields at finite temperatures. Electrostatic perturbation is considered to be created by an impurity atom or shot-range defect of QW fluctuation. The screening of this defect potential by an exciton condensate is studied. We find asymptotic spatial dependence of the screened potential and analyse its dependence on the temperature and exciton concentration. It is shown that the asymptotic of the screened pot…
We study the behavior of exciton polaritons in an optical microcavity with an embedded semiconductor quantum well. We use two-component exciton-photon approach formulated in terms of path integral formalism. In order to describe spatial distributions of the exciton and photon condensate densities, the two coupled equations of the Gross-Pitaevskii type are derived. For a homogeneous system, we find the noncondensate photon and exciton spectra, calculate the coefficients of transformation from the exciton-photon basis to the lower-upper polariton basis, and obtain the exciton and photon occupati…
