We report on the calculation of the cyclotron spin-flip excitation (CSFE) in a spin-polarized quantum Hall system at unit filling. This mode has a double-exciton component which contributes to the CSFE correlation energy but can not be found by means of a mean field approach. The result is compared with available experimental data.
We report on a study of the zero-momentum cyclotron spin-flip excitation in the V=2 quantum Hall regime. Using the excitonic representation the excitation energy is calculated up to the second order Coulomb corrections. A considerable negative exchange shift relative to the cyclotron gap is established for cyclotron spin-flip excitations in the the spin-unpolarized electronic system. Under these conditions this type of states presents the {\it lowest-energy} excitations. For a fixed filling factor V=2 the energy shift is independent of the magnetic field which is in agreement with recent exper…
The cyclotron spin-flip modes of spin unpolarized integer quantum Hall states ($ν=2,4$) have been studied with inelastic light scattering. The energy of these modes is significantly smaller compared to the bare cyclotron gap. Second order exchange corrections are held responsible for a negative energy contribution and render these modes the lowest energy excitations of unpolarized integer quantum Hall states.
An experimental technique for the indirect manipulation and detection of electron spins entangled in two-dimensional magnetoexcitons has been developed. The kinetics of the spin relaxation has been investigated. Photoexcited spin-magnetoexcitons were found to exhibit extremely slow relaxation in specific quantum Hall systems, fabricated in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs structures, namely, the relaxation time reaches values over one hundred microseconds. A qualitative explanation of this spin-relaxation kinetics is presented. Its temperature and magnetic field dependencies are discussed within the …
Spin-flip excitations in a quantum Hall electron system at fixed filling factor nu=2 are modelled and studied under conditions of a strong Coulomb interaction when the `Landau level mixing' is a dominant factor determining the excitation energy. The `one-exciton' approach used for the purely electronic excitations in question allows us to describe the Stoner transition from the unpolarized/paramgnet state to the polarized/ferromagnet one. The theoretical results are compared with the available experimental data.
We study the spin-dependent transport through a quantum dot coupled to two ferromagnetic electrodes using the equation of motion method for the nonequilibrium Green's functions. Our results show that the conductance and the density of states (DOS) are strongly dependent on the configurations of the magnetic electrodes. In parallel configuration of magnetic electrodes the conductance is affected by the spin-flip process and the Coulomb repulsion on the dot. The Kondo peak for spin-dependent transport is splitted into two peaks by the spin-flip process. The locations of the two peaks are symmetr…
We investigate the linear and nonlinear dc transport through an interacting quantum dot connected to two ferromagnetic electrodes around Kondo regime with spin-flip scattering in the dot. Using a slave-boson mean field approach for the Anderson Hamiltonian having finite on-site Coulomb repulsion, we find that a spin-flip scattering always depresses the Kondo correlation at arbitrary polarization strength in both parallel and antiparallel alignment of the lead magnetization and that it effectively reinforces the tunneling related conductance in the antiparallel configuration. For systems deep i…
We report the first observation of hole cyclotron resonance (CR) in ferromagnetic InMnAs/GaSb heterostructures both in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase and the low-temperature ferromagnetic phase. We clearly resolve two resonances that exhibit strong temperature dependence in position, linewidth, and intensity. We attribute the two resonances to the so-called fundamental CR transitions expected for delocalized holes in the valence band in the magnetic quantum limit, demonstrating the existence of $p$-like itinerant holes that are describable within the Luttinger-Kohn effective mass theo…
Cyclotron spin-flip excitation in a nu=2 quantum Hall system, being separated from the ground state by a slightly smaller gap than the cyclotron energy and from upper magnetoplasma excitation by the Coulomb gap [S. Dickmann and I.V. Kukushkin, Phys. Rev. B 71, 241310(R) (2005) ; L.V. Kulik, I.V. Kukushkin, S. Dickmann, V.E. Kirpichev, A.B. Vankov, A.L. Parakhonsky, J.H. Smet, K. von Klitzing, and W. Wegscheider, Phys. Rev. B 72, 073304 (2005)] cannot relax in a purely electronic way except only with the emission of a shortwave acoustic phonon (k~3*10^7/cm). As a result, relaxation in a modern …
We investigate the influence of an interband exchange interaction on magnetism in a two-band Hubbard model. Our main emphasis lies on spin-flip scattering which is often neglected but is neccessary to retain the full rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian. We find a striking dependence of the magnetization on the interband exchange coupling constant J and a substantial suppression of ferromagnetic order for a large range of values of J. The onset of an RKKY-like magnetic ordering mechanism is also observed.
We report time-resolved Kerr effect measurements of magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic SrRuO3. We observe that the demagnetization time slows substantially at temperatures within 15K of the Curie temperature, which is ~ 150K. We analyze the data with a phenomenological model that relates the demagnetization time to the spin flip time. In agreement with our observations the model yields a demagnetization time that is inversely proportional to T-Tc. We also make a direct comparison of the spin flip rate and the Gilbert damping coefficient showing that their ratio very close to kBTc, indicat…
The spin flip of the conduction electrons at the interface of a ferromagnetic and a nonmagnetic part of a metallic wire, suspended between two electrodes, is shown to tort the wire when a current is driven through it. In order to enhance the effect it is suggested to use an alternating current in resonance with the torsional oscillations. Thereby the magnetic polarization of the conduction electrons in the ferromagnet can be measured directly, and compared to the total magnetization. This may yield new information on the transport properties of the narrow band electrons in itinerant ferromagne…
We study spin wave relaxation in quantum Hall ferromagnet regimes. Spin-orbit coupling is considered as a factor determining spin nonconservation, and external random potential as a cause of energy dissipation making spin-flip processes irreversible. We compare this relaxation mechanism with other relaxation channels existing in a quantum Hall ferromagnet.
The energy spectrum of a one-electron quantum dot doped with a single magnetic ion is studied in the presence of an external magnetic field. The allowed cyclotron resonance (CR) transitions are obtained together with their oscillator strength (OS) as function of the magnetic field, the position of the magnetic ion, and the quantum dot confinement strength. With increasing magnetic field a ferromagnetic - antiferromagnetic transition is found that results in clear signatures in the CR absorption. It leads to discontinuities in the transition energies and the oscillator strengths and an increase…
The advent of Moiré materials has galvanized interest in the nature of charge carriers in topological bands. In contrast to conventional materials where charge carriers are electron-like quasiparticles, topological bands allow for more exotic possibilities where charge is carried by nontrivial topological textures, such as skyrmions. However, the real space description of skyrmions is ill-suited to address the limit of small or `baby' skyrmions which consist of an electron and a few spin flips. Here, we study the formation of the smallest skyrmions -- spin polarons, formed as bound states of a…
A novel method for mapping the local spin and orbital nature of the ground state of a system via corresponding flip excitations in both sectors is proposed based on angle resolved resonant photoemission and related diffraction patterns, presented here for the first time via an ab-initio modified one-step theory of photoemission. The analysis is done on the paradigmatic weak itinerant ferromagnet bcc Fe, whose magnetism, seen as a correlation phenomenon given by the coexistence of localized moments and itinerant electrons, and the non-Fermi liquid behaviour at ambient and extreme conditions bot…
We find unexpected low energy excitations of fully spin-polarized composite-fermion ferromagnets in the fractional quantum Hall liquid, resulting from a complex interplay between a topological order manifesting through new energy levels and a magnetic order due to spin polarization. The lowest energy modes, which involve spin reversal, are remarkable in displaying unconventional negative dispersion at small momenta followed by a deep roton minimum at larger momenta. This behavior results from a nontrivial mixing of spin-wave and spin-flip modes creating a spin-flip excitonic state of composite…
We succeeded in growing high quality single crystals of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe and measured the magnetoresistance at fields up to 34T. The Shubnikov-de Haas signal was observed for the first time in a U-111 system (UTGe, UTSi, T: transition metal). A small pocket Fermi surface (F~1kT) with large cyclotron effective mass 25m0 was detected at high fields above 22T, implying that UCoGe is a low carrier system accompanyed with heavy quasi-particles. The observed frequency decreases with increasing fields, indicating that the volume of detected Fermi surface changes nonlinearly with…
The "s-f model", also known as the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice, contains a description of band electrons coupled to localized spins which is an appropriate description of the magnetic part of the low-energy physics of Gd metal. Here the model is used to estimate the lifetime broadening of the minority spin component of the surface electron band in ferromagnetic gadolinium metal at temperatures below the Curie temperature. The low temperature result 0.10 eV agrees nicely with a measurement by Fedorov et al.
By means of the nonequilibrium Green function technique, the effect of spin-flip scatterings on the spin-dependent electrical transport in ferromagnet-insulator-ferromagnet (FM-I-FM) tunnel junctions is investigated. It is shown that Julliere's formula for the tunnel conductance must be modified when including the contribution from the spin-flip scatterings. It is found that the spin-flip scatterings could lead to an angular shift of the tunnel conductance, giving rise to the junction resistance not being the largest when the orientations of magnetizations in the two FM electrodes are antipara…
The zero bias conductance of quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic leads is investigated. In the strong coupling regime, it is found that the conductance is a non-monotonic function of the angle between the magnetisation directions in the two contacts. This behaviour is an effect of the presence of the leads which induces an angle dependent spin split of the quantum dot states, and spin flip transitions between the quantum dot states whenever the magnetisation directions of the leads are non-collinear which enhances the current density at the chemical potential. In the weak coupling regime, th…
We investigate the nonequilibrum transport properties of a quantum dot when spin flip processes compete with the formation of a Kondo resonance in the presence of ferromagnetic leads. Based upon the Anderson Hamiltonian in the strongly interacting limit, we predict a splitting of the differential conductance when the spin flip scattering amplitude is of the order of the Kondo temperature. We discuss how the relative orientation of the lead magnetizations strongly influences the electronic current and the shot noise in a nontrivial way. Furthermore, we find that the zero-bias tunneling magnetor…
Using analytical and path integral Monte Carlo methods, we study the susceptibility $χ_{dc}(T)$ of a spin-S impurity with XY rotational symmetry embedded in a metal. Close to a ferromagnetic quantum critical point, the impurity polarizes conduction electrons in its vicinity and forms a large magnetic droplet with moment M>>S. At not too low temperatures, the strongly damping paramagnon modes of the conduction electrons suppress large quantum fluctuations (or spin flips) of this droplet. We show that the susceptibility follows the law $χ_{dc}(T)=(M^{2}/T)[1-(πg)^{-1}\ln(gE_{0}/T)]$, where the p…
We present thermoelectric power and resistivity measurements in the ferromagnet UGe$_2$ as a function of temperature and magnetic field. At low temperature, huge quantum oscillations are observed in the thermoelectric power as a function of the magnetic field applied along the $a$ axis. The frequencies of the extreme orbits are determined and an analysis of the cyclotron masses is performed following different theoretical approaches for quantum oscillations detected in the thermoelectric power. They are compared to those obtained by Shubnikov-de Haas experiments on the same crystal and previou…
Performing an exact diagonalization of the effective spin problem, a ferromagnetic ground state of kinetic origin is shown to emerge in a system of $N$ strongly correlated electrons on a $L$-site ring ($L > N$). This phenomenon is brought about by the quantum necklace statistics originated from the no double occupancy constraint leading to a fractional shifted electron momentum quantization. As a consequence of such special energy level distribution, the kinetic ferromagnetism is stable only for $N=3$. For odd $N>3$ the fully polarized FM state energy is only a local minimum but it is protecte…
We examine the possibility of using graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with directly substituted chromium atoms as spintronic device. Using density functional theory, we simulate a voltage bias across a constructed GNR in a device setup, where a magnetic dimer has been substituted into the lattice. Through this first principles approach, we calculate the electronic and magnetic properties as a function of Hubbard U, voltage, and magnetic configuration. By calculating of the total energy of each magnetic configuration, we determine that initial antiferromagnetic ground state flips to a ferromagnetic s…
Magnetic field effects on the one-dimensional frustrated ferromagnetic chain are studied by means of effective field theory approaches in combination with numerical calculations utilizing Lanczos diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method. The nature of the ground state is shown to change from a spin-density-wave region to a nematic-like one upon approaching the saturation magnetization. The excitation spectrum is analyzed and the behavior of the single spin-flip excitation gap is studied in detail, including the emergent finite-size corrections.
We report studies of exchange bias and coercivity in ferromagnetic Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ layers coupled to antiferromagnetic (AF) (0001), (11$\bar{2}$0), and (11$\bar{0}$2) $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ layers. We show that AF spin configurations which permit spin-flop coupling give rise to a strong uniaxial anisotropy and hence a large coercivity, and that by annealing in magnetic fields parallel to specific directions in the AF we can control either coercivity or exchange bias. In particular, we show for the first time that a reversible temperature-induced spin reorientation in the AF can be used to control …
When Landau levels (LLs) become degenerate near the Fermi energy in the quantum Hall regime, interaction effects can drastically modify the electronic ground state. We study the quantum Hall ferromagnet formed in a two-dimensional hole gas around the LL filling factor $ν=1$ in the vicinity of a LL crossing in the heave-hole valence band. Cavity spectroscopy in the strong-coupling regime allows us to optically extract the two-dimensional hole gas' spin polarization. By analyzing this polarization as a function of hole density and magnetic field, we observe a spin flip of the ferromagnet. Furthe…
We report the discovery of a new diluted magnetic semiconductor, Li(Zn,Mn)P, in which charge and spin are introduced independently via lithium off-stoichiometry and the isovalent substitution of Mn2+ for Zn2+, respectively. Isostructural to (Ga,Mn)As, Li(Zn,Mn)P was found to be a p-type ferromagnetic semiconductor with excess Lithium providing charge doping. First principles calculations indicate that excess Li is favored to partially occupy the Zn site, leading to hole doping. Ferromagnetism is mediated in semiconducting samples of relative low mobile carriers with a small coercive force, ind…
