As discussed in this chapter, we develop a mean-field mathematical method to calculate the ground states of antiferromagnets and better understand the applied magnetic-field induced exotic properties. Within antiferromagnetic materials competitive and cooperative interactions exist leading to substance extraordinary magnetic states. Our calculations predict that applying a magnetic field to antiferromagnets can switch it from one magnetic state to another. These include antiferromagnetic ground state, spin-flop transition, spin-flopped state, spin-flip transition and spin-flipped state. Our framework successfully demonstrates these phase changes. With this, a map of all equilibrium magnetic ground states, as well as the respective equilibrium phase conditions, are derived. Our study provides insight into the origins of the various magnetic states.
We study the competition between antiferromagnetic order and valence bond solid formation in a two-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 model. The J1-J2 model on the square lattice is further frustrated by introducing products of three-spin projectors which stabilize four dimer-product states as degenerate ground states. These four states are reminiscent of the dimerized singlet ground state of the Shastry-Sutherland model. Using exact diagonalizations, we study the evolution of the ground state by varying theratio of interactions. For a large range of parameters (J2 > 0.25J1), our model shows a di…
Exchange bias is usually rationalized invoking spin pinning effects caused by uncompensated antiferromagnetic interfaces. However, for compensated antiferromagnets other extrinsic factors, such as interface roughness or spin canting, have to be considered to produce a small uncompensation. As an alternative, here we propose two (related) possible mechanisms, driven by the intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and ferroelectric polarization, for the explanation of exchange bias effects in perovskites with compensated G-type antiferromagnetism. One of the mechanisms is only active when a m…
We report evidence that the experimentally found antiferromagnetic structure as well as the semiconducting ground state of BaMn$_2$As$_2$ are caused by optimally-localized Wannier states of special symmetry existing at the Fermi level of BaMn$_2$As$_2$. In addition, we find that a (small) tetragonal distortion of the crystal is required to stabilize the antiferromagnetic semiconducting state. To our knowledge, this distortion has not yet been established experimentally.
We consider the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two dimensional quasiperiodic tiling. The T=0 state is long range ordered, with an inhomogeneous distribution of the staggered moment. An approximate real space renormalization scheme first developed for the square lattice is generalized and used to obtain information on the ground state energy as well as the distribution of local correlations in the quasicrystal.
We present the exact dimer ground state of a quantum antiferromagnet on the maple-leaf lattice. A coupling anisotropy for one of the three inequivalent nearest-neighbor bonds is sufficient to stabilize the dimer state. Together with the Shastry-Sutherland Hamiltonian, we show that this is the only other model with an exact dimer ground state for all two-dimensional lattices with uniform tilings.
In order to study effects of frustration in an itinerant electron system, we investigate ground states of the antiferromagnetic double-exchange model on a triangular lattice. In this model, pseudo-spins are coupled to electron transfer integrals in such a way that antiparallel configurations of pseudo-spins gain kinetic energies. Although the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice shows macroscopic dengenerate ground states, the present model shows that the degeneracy is lifted due to long-range natures of the double exchange interactions. Spin ordering at the ground state is al…
Measurements of the specific heat of antiferromagnetic CeRhIn5, to 21 kbar, and for 21 kbar to 70 kOe, show a discontinuous change from an antiferromagnetic ground state below 15 kbar to a superconducting ground state above, and suggest that it is accompanied by a weak thermodynamic first-order transition. Bulk superconductivity appears, apparently with d-wave electron pairing, at the critical pressure, 15 kbar; with further increase in pressure a residual temperature-proportional term in the specific heat disappears.
Finite-size effects are studied in ground states of antiferromagnetic (AF) ANNNI chains in a field. It is shown that field can induce a variety of inhomogeneous states in finite chains. They are composed of two shifted AF states with the kink at their junction and are highly degenerate with respect to the kink position. The phase diagram field-exchange ratio for finite chains is presented.
The ground state phase transition in the distorted S=1 kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) is studied by means of the perturbational calculation and numerical exact diagonalization method. For strong $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ lattice distortion, the hexgonal singlet solid (HSS) ground state of the uniform KHAF is destroyed and new singlet state, large HSS (LHSS) state, which is globally different from the HSS state is realized. The quantum phase transition between these two singlet states is analogous to the Haldane-dimer transition in the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The pres…
We present a certain class of two-dimensional frustrated quantum Heisenberg spin systems with multiple ring exchange interactions which are rigorously demonstrated to have quantum disordered ground states without magnetic long-range order. The systems considered in this paper are s=1/2 antiferromagnets on a honeycomb and square lattices, and an s=1 antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. We find that for a particular set of parameter values, the ground state is a short-range resonating valence bond state or a valence bond crystal state. It is shown that these systems are closely related to th…
We have investigated single crystals of two substitution series Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$)PO and CeFe(As$_{1-y}$P$_{y}$)O in the vicinity to the quantum critical material CeFePO by means of magnetic-susceptibility and specific-heat measurements. We observe an antiferromagnetic ground state in the vicinity of the quantum critical point, with pronounced metamagnetic transitions for $H\parallel c$, which is the magnetically hard direction. Our results verify that a ferromagnetic quantum critical point is avoided in substituted CeFePO, because we clearly demonstrate that the ferromagnetic ground state…
We construct and study two frustrated quantum spin-1/2 models on square lattice, which are like the antiferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ model with some additional four-spin exchange interactions. These models admit an exactly solvable case in which the ground state consists of four degenerate columnar-dimer singlet (CDS) configurations. Away from the exact case, we employ bond-operator mean-field theory to investigate the evolution of the ground state by varying the interaction parameters. The mean-field calculation reveals a quantum phase diagram in which the CDS phase undergoes a continuous phase …
By explicitly computing wavefunction overlap via exact diagonalization in finite systems, we provide evidence indicating that, in the limit of strong coupling, i.e., $Δ/t \to \infty$, the ground state of the Gutzwiller-projected BCS Hamiltonian (accompanied by proper particle-number projection) is identical to the exact ground state of the 2D antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square lattice. This identity is adiabatically connected to a very high overlap between the ground states of the projected BCS Hamiltonian and the t-J model at moderate doping.
We look into the quantum phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnet on the square lattice with degenerate Shastry-Sutherland ground states, for which only a schematic phase diagram is known so far. Many exotic phases were proposed in the schematic phase diagram by the use of exact diagonalization on very small system sizes. In our present work, an important extension of this antiferromagnet is introduced and investigated in the thermodynamic limit using triplon mean-field theory. Remarkably, this antiferromagnet shows a stable plaquette spin-gapped phase like the original Shastry-Su…
We discuss the ground state and the low-lying excitations of the spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice. This magnetic system belongs to the class of highly frustrated spin systems with an infinite non-trivial degeneracy of the classical ground state as it is known also for the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome and on the star lattice. The quantum ground state of the spin-half system is a quantum paramagnet likely with a finite spin gap and with a large number of non-magnetic excitations within this gap. The magnetization versus field curve sho…
We study the ground state properties of a quantum antiferromagnet in the kagome lattice in the presence of a magnetic field, paying particular attention to the stability of the plateau at magnetization 1/3 of saturation. While the plateau is reinforced by certain deformations of the lattice, like the introduction of structural defect lines and against an Ising anisotropy, ground state correlations are seen to be quite different and the undistorted SU(2) case appears to be rather special.
We develop a generalization of the singlet sector valence bond basis projection algorithm of Sandvik, Beach, and Evertz (A. W. Sandvik, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 207203 (2005); K. S. D. Beach and A. W. Sandvik, Nucl. Phys. B750, 142 (2006); A. W. Sandvik and H. G. Evertz, arXiv:0807.0682, unpublished.) to cases in which the ground state of an antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian has total spin $S_{tot} = 1/2$ in a finite size system. We explain how various ground state expectation values may be calculated by generalizations of the estimators developed in the singlet case, and illustrate the power of the m…
The ground state phase transitions in the distorted S=1 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) with single-site anisotropy D are studied by the numerical exact diagonalization method. For strong easy plane anisotropy, the hexgonal singlet solid (HSS) ground state of the uniform KHAF is destroyed and large-D state is realized. The quantum phase transition between these two states is analogous to the Haldane-large-D transition in the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The combined effect of the sqrt(3) times sqrt(3) lattice distortion and single site anisotropy is also investigated. The g…
We observe the excitation of collective modes in the THz range driven by the recently discovered Néel spin-orbit torques (NSOT) in the metallic antiferromagnet Mn$_{2}$Au. Temperature dependent THz spectroscopy reveals a strong absorption mode centered near 1 THz, which upon heating from 4 K to 450 K softens and looses intensity. Comparison with the estimated eigenmode frequencies implies that the observed mode is an in-plane antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) mode. The AFMR absorption strength exceeds those found in antiferromagnetic insulators, driven by the magnetic field of the THz radiati…
Bi3Mn4O12(NO3), in which the Mn4+ ions carry S=3/2, is the first honeycomb lattice system that shows no long-range magnetic order. Using neutron scattering, we have determined that short-range antiferromagnetic correlations develop at low temperatures. Applied magnetic fields induce a magnetic transition, in which the short-range order abruptly expands into a long-range order.
We investigate an antiferromagnetic s=1/2 quantum spin system with anisotropic spin exchange on a fractal lattice, the Sierpinski gasket. We introduce a novel approximative numerical method, the configuration selective diagonalization (CSD) and apply this method to the Sierpinski gasket with N=42. Using this and other methods we calculate ground state energies, spin gap, spin-spin correlations and specific heat data and conclude that the s=1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on the Sierpinski gasket shows a disordered magnetic ground state with a very short correlation length of about 1 and an, albeit…
The ground-state properties of the spin-1 pyrochlore antiferromagnet are studied by applying the VBS-like tetrahedron-unit decomposition to the original spin system. The symmetrization required on every vertex is taken into account by introducing a ferromagnetic coupling. The pairwise effective Hamiltonian between the adjacent tetrahedrons is obtained by considering the next nearest neighbor and the third neighbor exchange interactions. We find that the transverse component of the spin chirality exhibits a long-range order, breaking the parity symmetry of the tetrahedral group, while the chira…
We report evidence that the experimentally observed small deformation of antiferromagnetic NiO modifies the symmetry of the crystal in such a way that the antiferromagnetic state becomes an eigenstate of the electronic Hamiltonian. This deformation closely resembles a rhombohedral contraction, but does not possess the perfect symmetry of a trigonal (rhombohedral) space group. We determine the monoclinic base-centered magnetic space group of the antiferromagnetic structure within the deformed crystal which is strongly influenced by the time-inversion symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The antiferroma…
We study the phase diagram of the spin-1 quantum bilinear-biquadratic antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice using exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group algorithm. The SU(3)-symmetric point of this model Hamiltonian is a spontaneously trimerized state whose qualitative nature persists even at the Heisenberg point, a finding that contrasts previous proposals. We report the ground state energy per site of the Heisenberg model to be -1.410(2) and establish the presence of a spin gap.
We present an antiferromagnetic quantum spin-1/2 model on honeycomb lattice. It has two parts, one of which is the usual nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model. The other part is a certain multiple spin interaction term, introduced by us, which is exactly solvable for the ground state. Without the Heisenberg part, the model has an exact threefold degenerate dimer ground state. This exact ground state is also noted to exist for the general spin-S case. For the spin-1/2 case, we further carry out the triplon analysis in the ground state, to study the competition between the Heisenberg and the multipl…
We study the correlation function and concurrence for the eigenstates with zero spin of engineered Heisenberg models to explore the entanglement property. It is shown that the total nearest neighbor (NN) correlation function of zero-spin eigenstates reaches its local extremum when the coupling strength is uniform, and correspondingly the groundstate entanglement of $d$-D cubic AF Heisenberg model is locally maximized. Moreover, numerical calculations for a $N$-site quantum spin ring with cosinusoidally modulated exchange coupling, i.e. $J_i=J(1+\cos(2πi/N))$, indicate that the uniform coupling…
The experimental observation of a spin-gap in the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 compound $CaV_4O_9$ has been attributed to the formation of a plaquette resonating-valence-bond (PRVB) state in the underlying 1/5-depleted square lattice. We construct a spin-1/2 model on the 1/5-depleted lattice for which the PRVB state can be shown to be the exact ground state in a particular parameter regime. In a subspace of this parameter regime, the first excited state can be calculated exactly. In a different parameter regime, the dimer state is shown to be the exact ground state.
The S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two-dimensional pyramid lattice is studied by the numerical-diagonalization method. This lattice is obtained by the combination of the Lieb lattice and the square lattice. It is known that when interaction on the square lattice is increased from the ferrimagnetic limit of strong interaction on the Lieb lattice, this system shows gradual decrease and disappearance of spontaneous magnetization in the ground state. The present study treats the region near the case of the square-lattice antiferromagnet accompanied by isolated spins by numerical-diagona…
Magnetism-induced negative thermal expansion (NTE) observed in inverse perovskite antiferromagnets Mn3AN (A=Zn, Ga, etc.) is theoretically studied by a classical spin model with competing bond-length-dependent exchange interactions. We numerically reproduce the crystal-volume expansion upon cooling triggered by a non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order and show that the expansion occurs so as to maximize an energy gain of the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. This mechanism is not specific to inverse perovskite magnets and might also be expected in magnets with other crystal struct…
Low energy spectrum of the S=1 kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) is studied by means of exact diagonalization and the cluster expansion. The magnitude of the energy gap of the magnetic excitation is consistent with the recent experimental observation for \mpynn. In contrast to the $S=1/2$ KHAF, the non-magnetic excitations have finite energy gap comparable to the magnetic excitation. As a physical picture of the ground state, the hexagon singlet solid state is proposed and verified by variational analysis.
We report a single-crystal study on the magnetism of the rare-earth compound PrTiNbO$_6$ that experimentally realizes the zigzag pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ quantum antiferromagnetic chain model. Random crystal electric field caused by the site mixing between non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$, results in the non-Kramers ground state quasi-doublet of Pr$^{3+}$ with the effective pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Ising moment. Despite the antiferromagnetic intersite coupling of about 4 K, no magnetic freezing is detected down to 0.1 K, whilst the system approaches its ground state with almost zero residu…
Frustrated quantum magnetism has moved to the forefront of physics research, posing fundamental questions concerning quantum disordered states, entanglement, topology and the nature of the quantum wavefunction. The defining problem in the field is one of the simplest, the ground state of the nearest-neighbour $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice, but has defied all theoretical and numerical methods employed to date. We apply the formalism of tensor-network states (TNS), specifically the method of projected entangled simplex states (PESS), whose combination of a co…
A saddle point plus fluctuations analysis of the periodically driven half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model is performed. For drive frequencies below the equilibrium gap, we find discontinuous transitions to time-dependent solutions. A highly excited, generically non-thermal distribution of magnons occurs even for drive frequencies far above the gap. Above a critical drive amplitude, the low-energy magnon distribution diverges as the frequency tends to zero and antiferromagnetism is destroyed, revealing the generic importance of collective mode excitations arising from a non-equilibrium dri…
Ground-State Phase Diagram of the Effective Model with Antiferromagnetic Nearest-Neighbor and Ferromagnetic Next-Nearest-Neighbor Interactions in 1/1 Periodic Approximants to Icosahedral Quasicrystals
We have proposed the plaquette-singlet solid (PSS) ground state for the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg ladder. Based on the PSS picture, we discuss the correspondence of the PSS state to the valence-bond solid (VBS) state of the ground state of spin-2 chain by introducing an appropriate composite spin picture. When the bond alternation is introduced, there occur quantum phase transitions and each phase can be identified with that in the dimerized spin-2 chain. Furthermore, we argue that the VBS picture of spin-2S chain can be applied to the ground state of spin-S two-leg ladder.
A simple approach to estimation of the ground state energy of quantum antiferromagnets is developed, based on the approximation that quantum fluctuations around different bonds are independent. The ground state energy estimates are as good as spin wave theory or slightly better. A canonical transformation of the spin operators to generate bond quantum fluctuations is devised and applied to the classical ground state of the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice. This simple picture of quantum spin fluctuations might be useful in more complex models. The resulting nearest neighb…
The ground-state phase diagram of a half-filled anisotropic Kondo lattice model is calculated within a mean-field theory. For small transverse exchange coupling $J_{\perp}<J_{\perp c1}$, the ground state shows an antiferromagnetic long-range order with finite staggered magnetizations of both localized spins and conduction electrons. When $J_{\perp}>J_{\perp c2}$, the long-range order is destroyed and the system is in a disordered Kondo singlet state with a hybridization gap. Both ground states can describe the low-temperature phases of Kondo insulating compounds. Between these two distinct pha…
A magnetic origin for the honeycomb reconstruction of metallic surfaces with three-fold symmetry like Pb/Ge (111) is proposed. Assuming that the groundstate is an antiferromagnetic insulator over the triangular lattice of adatom sites (Pb), we demonstrate that the former is simultaneously unstable to canting and to a structural distortion if the surface is soft enough. We therefore predict a net magnetization over the reconstructed surface at sufficiently low temperature.
Cs2CuCl4 is known to possess a quantum spin liquid phase with antiferromagnetic interaction below 2.8 K. We report the observation of a new metastable magnetic phase of the triangular frustrated quantum spin system Cs2CuCl4 induced by the application of hydrostatic pressure. We measured the magnetic properties of Cs2CuCl4 following the application and release of pressure after 3 days. We observed a previously unknown ordered magnetic phase with a transition temperature of 9 K. Furthermore, the recovered sample with new magnetic ground state possesses an equivalent crystal structure to the unco…
Understanding spin-lattice coupling represents a key challenge in modern condensed matter physics, with crucial importance and implications for ultrafast and 2D-magnetism. The efficiency of angular momentum and energy transfer between spins and the lattice imposes fundamental speed limits on the ability to control spins in spintronics, magnonics and magnetic data storage. We report on an efficient nonlinear mechanism of spin-lattice coupling driven by THz light pulses. A nearly single-cycle THz pulse resonantly interacts with a coherent magnonic state in the antiferromagnet CoF2 and excites th…
We discuss the ground state of Benzene dianion (Bz$^{2-}$) on the basis of the numerical diagonalization method of an effective model of $π$ orbitals. It is found that the ground state can be the spin singlet state, and the exchange coupling between LUMOs can be antiferromagnetic.
We present a mean-field theory for magnetic field driven transitions in dipolar coupled gadolinium titanate Gd$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore system. Low temperature neutron scattering yields a phase that can be regarded as a 8 sublattice antiferromagnet, in which long-ranged ordered moments and fluctuating moments coexist. Our theory gives parameter regions where such a phase is realized, and predicts several other phases, with transitions amongst them driven by magnetic field as well as temperature. We find several instances of {\em local} disorder parameters describing the transitions.
With a mean field approach, the heavy Fermi liquid in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model is carefully considered in the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. As the ratio of the local Heisenberg superexchange coupling to the Kondo coupling increases, the Fermi surface structure changes dramatically. From the analysis of the ground state energy density, multiple Lifshitz type phase transitions occur at zero temperature.
Y{0.5}$Ca{0.5}BaCo4O7 contains kagome layers of Co ions, whose spins are strongly coupled according to a Curie-Weiss temperature of -2200 K. At low temperatures, T = 1.2 K, our diffuse neutron scattering study with polarization analysis reveals characteristic spin correlations close to a predicted two-dimensional coplanar ground state with staggered chirality. The absence of three dimensional long-range AF order proves negligible coupling between the kagome layers. The scattering intensities are consistent with high spin S=3/2 states of Co2+ in the kagome layers and low spin S=0 states for Co3…
We present local probe results on the honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Ba3CuSb2O9. Muon spin relaxation measurements in zero field down to 20 mK show unequivocally that there is a total absence of spin freezing in the ground state. Sb NMR measurements allow us to track the intrinsic susceptibility of the lattice, which shows a maximum at around 55 K and drops to zero in the low-temperature limit. The spin-lattice relaxation rate shows two characteristic energy scales, including a field-dependent crossover to exponential low-temperature behavior, implying gapped magnetic excitations.
The kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is a leading candidate in the search for a spin system with a quantum spin-liquid ground state. The nature of its ground state remains a matter of great debate. We conducted 17-O single crystal NMR measurements of the S=1/2 kagome lattice in herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, which is known to exhibit a spinon continuum in the spin excitation spectrum. We demonstrate that the intrinsic local spin susceptibility $χ_{kagome}$ deduced from the 17-O NMR frequency shift asymptotes to zero below temperature T ~ 0.03 J, where J ~ 200 K is the Cu-Cu super-exc…
How superconductivity emerges in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic insulating state is a long-standing issue of strong correlation physics. We study the transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a superconductor by hole-doping based on a bilayer generalization of a Hubbard-like model. The projector quantum Monte-Carlo simulations are employed, which are sign-problem-free both at and away from half-filling. An anisotropic Ising antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phase occurs at half-filling, which is weakened by hole-doping. Below a critical doping value, antiferromagnetism coexists w…
We describe the zero temperature phases and phase boundaries of an effective lattice model for frustrated, easy-plane, spin S=1/2 quantum antiferromagnets. The model contains states with Neel and bond-centered charge order and fractionalization in different limiting regimes, and we describe how these orders compete at intermediate coupling. The complex Berry phase terms render this model unsuitable for direct simulation; however, a duality mapping leads to a model of interacting current loops with positive weights, which is then studied by Monte Carlo simulations.
The ground state of the stacked triangular antiferromagnet CsFeBr$_3$ is a spin singlet due to the large single ion anisotropy $D(S^z)^2$. The field-induced magnetic ordering in this compound was investigated by the magnetic susceptibility, the magnetization process and specific heat measurements for an external field parallel to the $c$-axis. Unexpectedly, two phase transitions were observed in the magnetic field $H$ higher than 3 T. The phase diagram for temperature versus magnetic field was obtained. The mechanism leading to the successive phase transitions is discussed.
Chiral antiferromagnets are currently considered for broad range of applications in spintronics, spin-orbitronics and magnonics. In contrast to the established approach relying on materials screening, the anisotropic and chiral responses of low-dimensional antifferromagnets can be tailored relying on the geometrical curvature. Here, we consider an achiral, anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin chain and demonstrate that these systems possess geometry-driven effects stemming not only from the exchange interaction but also from the anisotropy. Peculiarly, the anisotropy-driven effects are complemen…
We analyze the phase diagram for a system of weakly-coupled electrons having an electron- and a hole-band with imperfect nesting. Namely, both bands have spherical Fermi surfaces, but their radii are slightly different, with a mismatch proportional to the doping. Such a model is used to describe: the antiferromagnetism of chromium and its alloys, pnictides, AA-stacked graphene bilayers, as well as other systems. Here we show that the uniform ground state of this model is unstable with respect to electronic phase separation in a wide range of model parameters. Physically, this instability occur…
Only 3% hole doping by Li is sufficient to suppress the long-range antiferromagnetic order in La2CuO4. Spin dynamics in such a disordered state was investigated with measurements of the dynamic magnetic structure factor S(omega,q), using cold neutron spectroscopy, for La2(Cu0.94Li0.06)O4. The S(omega,q) is found to sharply peak at (pi,pi), and its dynamics to be relaxational. Confirming theoretical expectation for the quantum disordered 2D S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the energy scale saturates at a finite value at low temperatures. Possible connection to the ``pseudo spin gap'' phenomeno…
In an ideal classical pyrochlore antiferromagnet without perturbations, an infinite degeneracy at a ground state leads to absence of a magnetic order and spin-glass transition. Here we present Na$_3$Mn(CO$_3$)$_2$Cl as a new candidate compound where classical spins are coupled antiferromagnetically on the pyrochlore lattice, and report its structural and magnetic properties. The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity, and the magnetization curve are consistent with those of an $S$ = 5/2 pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor interactions of 2 …
Muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) experiments on single crystals of the structurally perfect triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ indicate the absence of both static long-range magnetic order and spin freezing down to 0.048 K in zero field. Below 0.4 K, the $μ^{+}$ spin relaxation rates, which are proportional to the dynamic correlation function of the Yb$^{3+}$ spins, exhibit temperature-independent plateaus. Same behavior is revealed by temperature-independent local susceptibilities extracted from the Knight shifts of the $μ^{+}$ spin rotation frequencies under a transverse field of…
Entanglement renormalization techniques are applied to numerically investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice. Lattices of N={36,144,inf} sites with periodic boundary conditions are considered. For the infinite lattice, the best approximation to the ground state is found to be a valence bond crystal (VBC) with a 36-site unit cell, compatible with a previous proposal. Its energy per site, E=-0.43221, is an exact upper bound and is lower than the energy of any previous (gapped or algebraic) spin liquid candidate for the ground state.
We study the semiclassical limit of the $Sp(N)$ generalization of the pyrochlore lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet by expanding about the $N \to \infty$ saddlepoint in powers of a generalized inverse spin. To leading order, we write down an effective Hamiltonian as a series in loops on the lattice. Using this as a formula for calculating the energy of any classical ground state, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations and find a unique collinear ground state. This state is not a ground state of linear spin-wave theory, and can therefore not be a physical (N=1) semiclassical ground state.
