We propose an experimentally feasible method to generate a one-dimensional optical lattice potential in an ultracold Bose gas system that depends on the transverse momentum of the atoms. The optical lattice is induced by the artificial gauge potential generated by a periodically driven multi-laser Raman process, which depends on the transverse momentum of the atoms. We study the many-body Bose-Hubbard model in an effective 1D case and show that the superfluid--Mott-insulator transition can be controlled via tuning the transverse momentum of the atomic gas. We examined our prediction via a strong-coupling expansion to an effective 1D Bose-Hubbard model and a quantum Monte Carlo calculation, and discuss possible applications of our system.
We study the effects of a position-dependent artificial gauge field on an atomic Bose--Einstein condensate in quasi-one-dimensional and two-dimensional ring settings. The inhomogeneous artificial gauge field can induce global and local currents in the Bose--Einstein condensate via phase gradients along the ring and vortices, respectively. We observe two different regimes in the system depending on the radial size of the ring and strength of the gauge field. For weak artificial gauge fields, the angular momentum increases, as expected, in a quantized manner; however, for stronger values of the …
We study three-leg-ladder optical lattices loaded with repulsive atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and subjected to artificial gauge fields. By employing the plane-wave analysis and variational approach, we analyze the band-gap structure of the energy spectrum and reveal the exotic swallow-tail loop structures in the energy-level anti-crossing regions due to an interplay between the atom-atom interaction and artificial gauge field. Also, we discover stable discrete solitons residing in a semi-infinite gap above the highest band, these discrete solitons are associated with the chiral edge curren…
Gauge fields are ubiquitous in nature. In the context of quantum electrodynamics, you may be most familiar with the photon, which represents the gauge field mediating electromagnetic forces. But there are also gluons, which mediate strong forces, and the W and Z particles, which mediate the weak forces. According to the standard model, those few gauge bosons, in fact, mediate all elementary interactions.
We examine the effects of an artificial gauge field and finite temperature in a two-dimensional disordered Bose-Hubbard model. The disorder considered is diagonal and quenched in nature. A signature of disorder in the Bose-Hubbard model is the Bose glass phase. Our work shows that the introduction of an artificial gauge field enhances the domain of the Bose glass phase in the phase diagram. Most importantly, the size of the domain can be tuned with the strength of the artificial gauge field. The introduction of the finite temperature effects is essential to relate theoretical results with the …
Simulating magnetic effects with cold gases of neutral atoms is a challenge. Since these atoms have no charge, one needs to create artificial gauge fields by taking advantage of the geometric phases that can result for instance from atom-light interaction. We review here some schemes that lead to the desired Hamiltonians, either in a bulk geometry or in a lattice configuration. We also detail the relations between some general concepts of magnetism, such as gauge invariance, Landau levels, topological bands, and the features that can be generated in cold atoms setups.
We study a two component Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an inhomogeneous artificial gauge field. In response to this field, the condensate forms a localised vortex lattice structure that leads to a non-trivial symmetry breaking in the phase separated regime. The underlying physical mechanism can be understood by considering the energy landscape and we present a simplified model that is capable of reproducing the main features of the phase separation transition. The intuition gained by numerically solving this simplified model is then corroborated using the analytical Thomas-Fermi …

We consider a system of weakly interacting bosons confined on a planar double ring lattice subjected to two artificial gauge fields. We determine its ground state by solving coupled discrete non-linear Schrödinger equations at mean field level. At varying inter-ring tunnel coupling, flux and interactions we identify the vortex, Meissner and biased-ladder phases also predicted for a bosonic linear ladder by a variational Ansatz. We also find peculiar features associated to the ring geometry, in particular parity effects in the number of vortices, and the appearance of a single vortex in the Mei…
We show that, in the presence of a $π/2$ artificial gauge field per plaquette, Mott insulating phases of ultra-cold fermions with $SU(N)$ symmetry and one particle per site generically possess an extended chiral phase with intrinsic topological order characterized by a multiplet of $N$ low-lying singlet excitations for periodic boundary conditions, and by chiral edge states described by the $SU(N)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory for open boundary conditions. This has been achieved by extensive exact diagonalizations for $N$ between $3$ and $9$, and by a parton construction…
We consider a two-leg boson ladder in an artificial U(1) gauge field and show that, in the presence of interleg attractive interaction, the flux induced Vortex state can be melted by dislocations. For increasing flux, instead of the Meissner to Vortex transition in the commensurate-incommensurate universality class, first an Ising transition from the Meissner state to a charge density wave takes place, then, at higher flux, the melted Vortex phase is established via a disorder point where incommensuration develops in the rung current correlation function and in momentum distribution. Finally, t…
The Berry curvature is a geometrical property of an energy band which can act as a momentum space magnetic field in the effective Hamiltonian of a wide range of systems. We apply the effective Hamiltonian to a spin-1/2 particle in two dimensions with spin-orbit coupling, a Zeeman field and an additional harmonic trap. Depending on the parameter regime, we show how this system can be described in momentum space as either a Fock-Darwin Hamiltonian or a one-dimensional ring pierced by a magnetic flux. With this perspective, we interpret important single-particle properties, and identify analogue …
We examine the zero and finite temperature phase diagrams of soft-core bosons of the extended Bose-Hubbard model on a square optical lattice. To study various quantum phases and their transitions we employ single-site and cluster Gutzwiller mean-field theory. We have observed that the Mott insulator phase vanishes above a critical value of nearest-neighbour interaction and the supersolid phase occupies a larger region in the phase diagram. We show that the presence of artificial gauge field enlarges the domain of supersolid phase. The finite temperature destroys the crystalline structure of th…
In the present paper we investigate the ground state of Tonks-Girardeau gas under density-dependent gauge potential. With Bose-Fermi mapping method we obtain the exact ground state wavefunction for the system confined in a harmonic potential. Based on the ground state wavefunction, the reduced one body density matrix (ROBDM), natural orbitals and their occupations, and the momentum distributions are obtained. Compared with the case without gauge potential, the present wavefunction and ROBDM have additional phase factors induced by gauge potential. The momentum distribution is the convolution o…
We consider a two leg bosonic ladder in a $U(1)$ gauge field with both interleg hopping and interleg repulsion. As a function of the flux, the interleg interaction converts the commensurate-incommensurate transition from the Meissner to a Vortex phase, into an Ising-type of transition towards a density wave phase. A disorder point is also found after which the correlation functions develop a damped sinusoid behavior signaling a melting of the vortex phase. We discuss the differences on the phase diagram for attractive and repulsive interleg interaction. In particular, we show how repulsion fav…
We propose an innovative quantum emulator based on Moire superlattices showing that, by employing periodical modulation on each lattice site, one can create tunable, artificial gauge fields with imprinting Peierls phases on the hopping parameters and realize an analog of novel Haldane-like phase. As an application, we provide a methodology to directly quantify the topological invariant in such a system from a dynamical quench process. This design shows a robustly integrated platform which opens a new door to investigate topological physics.
The order parameter of a quantum-coherent many-body system can include a phase degree of freedom, which, in the presence of an electromagnetic field, depends on the choice of gauge. Because of the relationship between the phase gradient and the velocity, time-of-flight measurements reveal this gradient. Here, we make such measurements using initially trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) subject to an artificial magnetic field. Vortices are nucleated in the BEC for artificial field strengths above a critical value, which represents a structural phase transition. By comparing to superfluid-h…
Artificial gauge fields are currently realized in a wide range of physical settings. This includes solid-state devices but also engineered systems, such as photonic crystals, ultracold gases and mechanical setups. It is the aim of this review to offer, for the first time, a unified view on these various forms of artificial electromagnetic fields and spin-orbit couplings for matter and light. This topical review provides a general introduction to the universal concept of engineered gauge fields, in a form which is accessible to young researchers entering the field. Moreover, this work aims to c…
A two-dimensional spatially and temporally modulated Wannier-Stark system of ultracold atoms in optical lattices is shown to mimic the behavior of a Dirac particle. Suitable additional modulations generate an artificial gauge field which simulates a magnetic field and imposes the use of the full spinor-four Dirac equation.
We study bosonic atoms with two internal states in artificial gauge potentials whose strengths are different for the two components. A series of topological phases for such systems is proposed using the composite fermion theory and the parton construction. It is found in exact diagonalization that some of the proposed states may be realized for simple contact interaction between bosons. The ground states and low-energy excitations of these states are modeled using trial wave functions. The effective field theories for these states are also constructed and reveal some interesting properties.
We propose to generate an artificial non-Abelian $U(3)$ gauge field by using a 2-tripod scheme, namely two tripod configurations sharing a common ground state level and driven by resonant 1-photon transitions. Using an appropriate combination of four Laguerre-Gauss and two Hermite-Gauss laser beams, we are able to produce a $U(3)$-monopole and a $U(3)$ spin-orbit coupling for both alkali and alkaline-earth atoms. This 2-tripod scheme could open the way to the study of interacting spinor condensates subjected to $U(3)$-monopoles.
We consider theoretically ultracold interacting bosonic atoms confined to quasi-one-dimensional ladder structures formed by optical lattices and coupled to the field of an optical cavity. The atoms can collect a spatial phase imprint during a cavity-assisted tunneling along a rung via Raman transitions employing a cavity mode and a transverse running wave pump beam. By adiabatic elimination of the cavity field we obtain an effective Hamiltonian for the bosonic atoms, with a self-consistency condition. Using the numerical density matrix renormalization group method, we obtain a rich steady stat…
We consider the dynamics of two-dimensional interacting ultracold bosons triggered by suddenly switching on an artificial gauge field. The system is initialized in the ground state of a harmonic trapping potential. As a function of the strength of the applied artificial gauge, we analyze the emergent dynamics by monitoring the angular momentum, the fragmentation as well the entropy and variance of the entropy of absorption or single-shot images. We solve the underlying time-dependent many-boson Schrödinger equation using the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method for indistinguisha…
We consider interacting bosonic particles on a two-leg triangular ladder in the presence of an artificial gauge field. We employ density matrix renormalization group numerical simulations and analytical bosonization calculations to study the rich phase diagram of this system. We show that the interplay between the frustration induced by the triangular lattice geometry and the interactions gives rise to multiple chiral quantum phases. Phase transition between superfluid to Mott-insulating states occur, which can have Meissner or vortex character. Furthermore, a state that explicitly breaks the …
The Berry curvature is a geometrical property of an energy band which acts as a momentum space magnetic field in the effective Hamiltonian describing single-particle quantum dynamics. We show how this perspective may be exploited to study systems directly relevant to ultracold gases and photonics. Given the exchanged roles of momentum and position, we demonstrate that the global topology of momentum space is crucially important. We propose an experiment to study the Harper-Hofstadter Hamiltonian with a harmonic trap that will illustrate the advantages of this approach and that will also consti…
We generalize the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation to periodically driven systems using Floquet theory. The method is applied to the periodically driven, strongly interacting Fermi-Hubbard model, for which we identify two regimes resulting in different effective low-energy Hamiltonians. In the nonresonant regime, we realize an interacting spin model coupled to a static gauge field with a nonzero flux per plaquette. In the resonant regime, where the Hubbard interaction is a multiple of the driving frequency, we derive an effective Hamiltonian featuring doublon association and dissociation proces…
Artificial gauge fields are versatile tools that allow to influence the dynamics of ultracold atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates. Here we discuss a method of artificial gauge field generation stemming from the evanescent fields of the curved surface of an optical nanofibre. The exponential decay of the evanescent fields leads to large gradients in the generalized Rabi frequency and therefore to the presence of geometric vector and scalar potentials. By solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of the artificial gauge fields originating from the fundamental HE$_{11}$ mode of the fib…
The implementation of static artificial magnetic fields in ultracold atomic systems has become a powerful tool, e.g. for simulating quantum-Hall physics with charge-neutral atoms. Taking an interacting bosonic flux ladder as a minimal model, we investigate protocols for adiabatic state preparation via magnetic flux ramps. Considering the fact that it is actually the artificial vector potential (in the form of Peierls phases) that can be experimentally engineered in optical lattices, rather than the magnetic field, we find that the time required for adiabatic state preparation dramatically depe…
The entanglement of vortices in a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with artificial gauge fields is investigated using the exact diagonalization techniques. We propose an effective Hamiltonian for the spin-spin interactions between vortices responsible for this entanglement, and show that the entanglement can be detected through the quantum interference of the bosons in the vortex centers achieved using the Raman coupling and the quantum gas microscope. The strong bosonic coherence between the vortex centers originates from the charge-density wave order in the vortex core. It is robust agains…
The topological superfluids with Majorana zero modes have not yet been realized in ultracold atoms with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Here we show that these phases can be realized with an artificial gauge potential, which can be regarded as a site-dependent rotating Zeeman field. This potential breaks the inversion symmetry and plays the same role as Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In the inverted bands, this model can open a proper parameter regime for topological superfluids. Strikingly, we find that the interaction near the Fermi surface is dominated by the dispersion scattering in the same band…
Spin-dependent electrical injection has found useful applications in storage devices, but fully operational spin-dependent semiconductor electronics remain a challenging task because of weak spin-orbit couplings and/or strong spin relaxations. These limitations are lifted considering atoms instead of electrons or holes as spin carriers. In this emerging field of atomtronics, we demonstrate the equivalent of a Datta-Das transistor using a degenerate Fermi gas of strontium atoms as spin carriers in interaction with a tripod laser-beams scheme. We explore the dependence of spin rotation, and we i…
