We compare the quasiparticle lifetime behavior in the unitary limit of two unconventional superconductors dressed by non-magnetic impurity scattering to differentiate an anomalous functional behavior in its shape when the disorder concentration is changed in a triplet paired model with respect to the well behave singlet model. For singlet paired superconductors, the functional shape of the lifetime due to elastic scattering around the nodal regions does not change with the change of the disorder concentration, but for a triplet model with a tiny gap, an anomalous drop in shape is observed only when small values of disordering are added. We use a 2D tight-binding parametrization to study the reduced phase space of the first Brillouin zone, where the low energy scattering is restricted to the nodal/quasinodal regions for two irreducible representations of the crystal lattice.
We report on the on-chip detection of microwaves in the frequency range around 100GHz. For the purpose of detection, we employ a discrete transport channel triggered in a superconducting single-electron transistor by photon-assisted tunneling of quasiparticles. The technique is successfully applied to observe the spectrum of the dressed states of a model cQED system consisting of a superconducting coplanar resonator coupled to a quantum Josephson oscillator. The dressed states appear as typical resonance anticrossing exhibiting, in our case, an expectedly wide frequency splitting corresponding…
We theoretically study the dependence of the quasiparticle (QP) scattering rate $\varGamma$ on the uniaxial anisotropy of a Fermi surface with changing the magnetic field angle $α_{\rm M}$. We consider the QP scattering due to the non-magnetic impurities inside a single vortex core. The field-angle dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate $\varGamma(α_{\rm M})$ is sensitive to the sign-change of the pair potential. We show that with increasing the two dimensionality of the system, $\varGamma(α_{\rm M})$ reflects more clearly whether there is the sign-change in the pair potential.
A novel singular gauge transformation is developed for quasiparticles in the mixed state of a strongly type-II superconductor which permits a full solution of the problem at low and intermediate fields. For a periodic vortex lattice the natural low-energy quasiparticle states are Bloch waves rather than Landau levels discussed in the recent literature. The new representation elucidates the physics considerably and provides fresh insights into the spectral properties of such systems.
Field-angle dependent heat capacity of the non-magnetic borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C reveals a clear fourfold oscillation, the first observation of its kind. The observed angular variations were analyzed as a function of magnetic field angle, field intensity and temperature to provide its origin. The quantitative agreement between experiment and theory strongly suggests that we are directly observing nodal quasiparticles generated along <100> by the Doppler effect. The results demonstrate that field-angle heat capacity can be a powerful tool in probing the momentum-space gap structure in…
The role of electron-phonon interactions in iron-based superconductor is currently under debate with conflicting experimental reports on the isotope effect. To address this important issue, we employ the renormalization-group method to investigate the competition between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in these materials. The renormalization-group analysis shows that the ground state is a phonon-dressed unconventional superconductor: the dominant electronic interactions account for pairing mechanism while electron-phonon interactions are subdominant. Because of the phonon dr…
I consider the problem of the vortex contribution to quasiparticle transport in unconventional superconductors with line nodes, a nd argue that the magnetic field dependence of transport coefficients is fixed by the same scattering processes which limit low-temperature transport. I give no detailed calculations, but show that qualitatively correct results may be obtained in the limit of low temperatures and fields by simple physical arguments, based on estimates of the density of states and relaxation time in analogy with the zero-field case. I conclude with a brief discussion of the problem o…
We perform large-scale numerical calculations self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations in the magnetic field together with random impurities to directly demonstrate the typical quasi-particle interference (QPI) in the presence of vortices as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy experiments in unconventional superconductors. The calculations reveal that vortex itself never works as a scatter causing the QPI pattern but vortex core containing impurity brings about the enhancement of the sign-preserving QPI peaks. Its origin is Andreev bound-states dist…
We theoretically investigate the quasiparticle scattering rate $\varGamma$ inside a vortex core in the existence of non-magnetic impurities distributed randomly in a superconductor. We show that the dependence of $\varGamma$ on the magnetic field direction is sensitive to the sign of the pair potential. The behavior of $\varGamma$ is quite different between an s-wave and a d-wave pair potential, where these are assumed to have the same amplitude anisotropy, but a sign change only for the d-wave one. It is suggested that measurements of the microwave surface impedance with changing applied-fiel…
We report a microscopic model wherein the unconventional superconductivity emerges from an incoherent `Cooper-pair glass' state. Driven by the pair-pair interaction, a new type of quasi-Bose phase transition is at work. The interaction leads to the unconventional coupling of the quasiparticles to excited pair states, or `super-quasiparticles', with a non-retarded energy-dependent gap. The model describes quantitatively the quasiparticle excitation spectra of both cuprates and pnictides, including the universal `peak-dip-hump' signatures, and for the pseudogap phase above $T_c$. The results sho…
The temperature ($T$) and magnetic field ($H$) dependence of the magnetic penetration depth, $λ(T,H)$, in Ca(Al$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$)$_2$ exhibits significant deviation from that expected for conventional BCS superconductors. In particular, it is inferred from a field dependence of $λ(H)$ ($\propto H$) at 2.0 K that the quasiparticle excitation is strongly enhanced by the Doppler shift. This suggests that the superconducting order parameter in Ca(Al$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$)$_2$ is characterized by a small energy scale $Δ_S/k_B\le 2$ K originating either from anisotropy or multi-gap structure.
We will extend the concept of electron band Berry curvatures to superconducting materials. We show that this can be defined for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation describing the superconducting state in a periodic crystal. In addition, the concept is exploited to understand the driving mechanism for the optical Kerr effect in time reversal symmetry breaking superconductors. Finally, we establish a sum rule analogue to the normal state Hall sum rule making quantitative contact between the imaginary part of the optical conductivity and the Berry curvature. The general theory will be applied and t…
In the approximation of validity of the Drude expression for quasiparticle conductivity and the assumption that all electrons at T = 0 transform into a superfluide condensate, the expression for the quasiparticle scattering rate tau -1 in terms of the real and imaginary parts of the microwave surface impedance has been obtained. The resulting expression is a generalization of the well-known expression for tau^-1, valid for omega x tau is much less 1, to an arbitrary value of omega x tau, where omega is the frequency of the microwave field. From experimental Ka-band impedance measurements, temp…
A crucial step in revealing the nature of unconventional superconductivity is to investigate the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy has proven a powerful technique to probe this symmetry by measuring the quasiparticle interference (QPI) which sensitively depends on the superconducting pairing mechanism. A particularly well suited material to apply this technique is the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs as it features clean, charge neutral cleaved surfaces without surface states and a relatively high Tc~18K. Our data reveal that in LiFeAs the qua…
We discuss a detailed phase diagram and other microscopic characteristics on the applied magnetic field - temperature (H_a-T) plane for a simple model of correlated fluid represented by a two-dimensional (2D) gas of heavy quasiparticles with masses dependent on the spin direction and the effective field generated by the electron correlations. The consecutive transitions between the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases are either continuous or discontinuous, depending on the values of H_a and T. In the latter case, weak metamagnetic transitions …
Quasiparticles in the vortex lattice of strongly type-II superconductors are investigated by means of a singular gauge transformation applied to the tight binding lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. We present a detailed derivation of the gauge invariant effective low energy Hamiltonian for the quasiparticle-vortex system and show how the physics of the "Doppler shift" and "Berry phase" can be incorporated at the Hamiltonian level by working in the singular gauge. In particular, we show that the "Berry phase" effect manifests itself in the effective Hamiltonian through a half-flux Aharon…
We clarify the new concept of gravitationally dressed Fermi liquids we have proposed to describe the normal state of high Tc superconductors. In this note we distinguish between weakly gravitationally dressed Fermi liquids which fall in the class of the canonical Fermi liquid theory (with quasiparticle excitations), and strongly gravitationally dressed Fermi liquids (with quasiunparticle excitations) which represent the high dimensional generalization of Luttinger liquids, with specific features. Such weakly or strongly gravitationally dressed Fermi liquids lead naturally to the previously pro…
The pressure dependent electrical resistivity of URu$_2$Si$_2$ has been studied at high pressure across the first order phase boundary of $P_x$ where the ground state switches under pressure from "hidden order" (HO) to large moment antiferromagnetic (LAFM) states. The electrical transport in URu$_2$Si$_2$ at low temperatures shows a strong sample dependence. We have measured an ultra-clean single crystal whose quality is the highest among those used in previous studies. The generalized power law $ρ{\,}={\,}{ρ_0}+{\,}{A_n}T{^n}$ analysis finds that the electric transport property deviates from …
The gap function in unconventional superconductors may vanish at points or lines in momentum space, permitting electronic excitations, termed nodal quasiparticles, to exist at temperatures well below the superconducting transition. In the vortex phase, the presence of nodal quasiparticles should be directly observable through the variation of the heat capacity with the angle between a magnetic field and the location of the zeroes of the gap. The heat capacity of candidate non-magnetic unconventional superconductors Lu(Y)Ni2B2C were found to exhibit fourfold oscillations with field angle, the f…
The electron dynamics in the normal state of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ is studied by inelastic light scattering over a wide range of doping. A strong anisotropy of the electron relaxation is found which cannot be explained by single-particle properties alone. The results strongly indicate the presence of an unconventional quantum-critical metal-insulator transition where "hot" (antinodal) quasiparticles become insulating while "cold" (nodal) quasiparticles remain metallic. A phenomenology is developed which allows a quantitative understanding of the Raman results and provides a scenario wh…
This Letter theoretically discusses quasiparticle states and nuclear spin relaxation rates $T_1^{-1}$ in a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ under a magnetic field applied parallel to the conduction chains. We study the effects of Josephson-type vortices on $T_1^{-1}$ by solving the Bogoliubov de Gennes equation for $p$-, $d$- or $f$-wave pairing interactions. In the presence of line nodes in pairing functions, $T_1^{-1}$ is proportional to $T$ in sufficiently low temperatures because quasiparticles induced by vortices at the Fermi energy relax spins. We also try to identi…
We use the idea of the Wigner probability distribution (WPD) in a reduced scattering phase space (RPS) for the elastic scattering cross-section, with the help of a Tight-Binding (TB) numerical procedure allowing us to consider the anisotropic quantum effects, to phenomenologically predict several phases in these two novel unconventional superconductors. Unlike our previous works with pieces of evidence that these two compounds are in the unitary strong scattering regime and that superconductivity is suppressed by the atoms of strontium in both materials, several phases are built. In the case o…
Recent experiments indicate that the Bechgaard salts (TMTSF)$_2$ ClO$_4$ and (TMTSF)$_2$ PF$_6$ may be unconventional triplet superconductors. The quasiparticle density of states and the uniform spin susceptibility tensor are computed at low temperatures for order parameter symmetries, as an attempt to narrow the number of possibilities based on experimental evidence.
We present scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements of the local quasiparticles' excitation spectra of CeCoIn$_5$ between 440mK and 3K in samples with a bulk $T_{\rm c}=2.25$K. The spectral shape of our low-temperature tunneling data, quite textbook nodal-gap conductance, allow us to confidently fit the spectra with a d-wave density of states considering also a shortening of quasiparticles' lifetime term $Γ$. The $Δ(0)$ value obtained from the fits yields a BCS ratio $2Δ/kT_{\rm c} =7.73$ suggesting that CeCoIn$_5$ is an unconventional superconductor in the strong coupling limit. The fits …
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides entwine interaction, spin-orbit coupling, and topology. Hole-doped systems lack spin degeneracy: states are indexed with spin and valley specificity. This unique structure offers new possibilities for correlated phases and phenomena. We realize an unconventional superconducting pairing phase which is an equal mixture of a spin singlet and the $m = 0$ spin triplet. It is stable against large in-plane magnetic fields, and its topology allows quasiparticle excitations of net nonzero Berry curvature via pair-breaking circularly polarized light.
We investigate the physical origin of unconventional low-energy excitations in cuprate superconductors by considering the effect of coexisting competing orders (CO) and superconductivity (SC) and of quantum fluctuations and other bosonic modes on the low-energy charge excitation spectra. By incorporating both SC and CO in the bare Green's function and quantum phase fluctuations in the self-energy, we can consistently account for various empirical findings in both the hole- and electron-type cuprates, including the excess subgap quasiparticle density of states, ``dichotomy'' in the fluctuation-…
Motivated by the recent development of terahertz pump-probe experiments, we investigate the short-time dynamics in superconductors with multiple attractive pairing channels. Studying a single-band square lattice model with spin-spin interaction as an example, we find the signatures of collective excitations of the pairing symmetries (known as Bardasis-Schrieffer modes) as well as the order parameter amplitude (Higgs mode) in the short-time dynamics of the spectral gap and quasiparticle distribution after an excitation by a pump pulse. We show that the polarization and intensity of the pulse ca…
We develop a fully microscopic theory for the calculations of the angle-dependent properties of unconventional superconductors under a rotated magnetic field. We employ the quasiclassical Eilenberger equations, and use a variation of the Brandt-Pesch-Tewordt (BPT) method to obtain a closed form solution for the Green's function. The equations are solved self-consistently for quasi-two-dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$ ($d_{xy}$) superconductors with the field rotated in the basal plane. The solution is used to determine the density of states and the specific heat. We find that applying the field along…
Dynamical information on spin degrees of freedom of proteins or solids can be obtained by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). A technique with similar versatility for charge degrees of freedom and their ultrafast correlations could move forward the understanding of systems like unconventional superconductors. By perturbing the superconducting state in a high-Tc cuprate using a femtosecond laser pulse, we generate coherent oscillations of the Cooper pair condensate which can be described by an NMR/ESR formalism. The oscillations are detected by transient broad-ba…
The paramagnon contribution to the quasiparticle inelastic scattering rate in disordered superconductors is presented. Using Anderson's exact eigenstate formalism, it is shown that the scattering rate is Stoner enhanced and is further enhanced by the disorder relative to the clean case in a manner similar to the disorder enhancement of the long-range Coulomb contribution. The results are discussed in connection with the possibility of conventional or unconventional superconductivity in the borocarbides. The results are compared to recent tunneling experiments on LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C.
We consider the energy of the filled quasiparticle's Fermi sea of a macroscopic superconducting ring threaded by an hc/2e-vortex, when the material of the ring is of an unconventional pairing symmetry. The energy relative to the one for the hc/e-vortex configuration is finite, positive, and inversely proportional to ring's inner radius. We argue that the existence of this energy in unconventional superconductors removes the commonly assumed degeneracy between the odd and the even vortices, with the loss of the concomitant hc/2e periodicity in external magnetic field as a consequence. This macr…
We introduce and analyze a variational wave function for quasi two-dimensional kappa-ET organic salts containing strong local and nonlocal correlation effects. We find an unconventional superconducting ground state for intermediate charge carrier interaction, sandwiched between a conventional metal at weak coupling and a spin liquid at larger coupling. Most remarkably, the excitation spectrum is dramatically renormalized and is found to be the driving force for the formation of the unusual superconducting state.
Microwave conductivity experiments can directly measure the quasiparticle scattering rate in the superconducting state. We show that this, combined with knowledge of the Fermi surface geometry, allows one to distinguish between closely related superconducting order parameters, e.g., d$_{x^2-y^2}$ and d$_{xy}$ superconductivity. We benchmark this method on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and, unsurprisingly, confirm that this is a d$_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductor. We then apply our method to $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br, which we discover is a d$_{xy}$ superconductor.
Effect of surface pair breaking, entirely neglected by M. Samanta and S. Datta [Phys. Rev. B v. 57, 10972 (1998)], is quite important in considering surface (or interface) quasiparticle bound states and associated characteristics of junctions involving unconventional superconductors. The whole class of bound states with nonzero energy is simply omitted within the framework of the approach, using uniform spatial profile of the order parameter up to the interface. The contribution of these bound states (as well as midgap states) to current-voltage characteristics of the SIS' tunnel junctions wer…
We report 31P-NMR and specific heat measurements on an iron (Fe)-based superconductor SrFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc=26 K, which have revealed the development of antiferromagnetic correlations in the normal state and the unconventional superconductivity(SC) with nodal gap dominated by the gapless low-lying quasiparticle excitations. The results are consistently argued with an unconventional multiband SC state with the gap-size ratio of different bands being significantly large; the large full gaps in s\pm-wave state keep Tc high, whereas a small gap with a nodal-structure causes gapless feature u…
The Kondo effect in superconductors is frequently investigated using the local quasiparticle density of states as sole bath characteristics, i.e., the presence of anomalous propagators is ignored. Here we point out that this treatment is exact for a number of situations, including point-like impurities in d-wave superconductors. We comment on recent investigations [M. Matsumoto and M. Koga, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 70, 2860 (2001), cond-mat/0011256, and Phys. Rev. B 65, 024508 (2002), cond-mat/0103053] which reached different conclusions: while their numerical results are likely correct, their inter…
The heavy quasiparticle bands in Kondo materials which originate in the hybridization of f- and conduction electrons exhibit numerous, sometimes coexisting, broken symmetry phases. Most notable are unconventional superconductivity, itinerant small moment antiferromagnetism and hidden order of higher order multipoles of f-electrons which all lead to a gapping of the heavy bands. In rare cases the chemical potential lies within the hybridization gap and the ground state is a Kondo semiconductor without ordering. The dynamical magnetic response of such gapped f-electron systems has been investiga…
We show that the field dependence of the magnetic penetration depth ($λ$), for which muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) is an excellent microscopic probe, provides useful information on the degree of anisotropy for the superconducting order parameter. In type II superconductors associated with anisotropic order parameters, $λ$ is sensitive to the quasiparticle excitation induced by the Doppler shift due to a supercurrent around magnetic vortices. The presence of such low-energy excitations manifests itself in the non-zero slope of $λ$ against an external magnetic field. We review recent results on the…
Quasiparticle bound states are found theoretically on transparent interfaces of d-wave superconductors (dSC) with charge density wave solids (CDW), as well as s-wave superconductors (sSC) with d-density waves (DDW). These bound states represent a combined effect of Andreev reflection from the superconducting side and an unconventional quasiparticle Q-reflection from the density wave solid. If the order parameter for a density wave state is much less than the Fermi energy, bound states with almost zero energy take place for an arbitrary orientation of symmetric interfaces. For larger values of …
We present a microscopic approach to the calculations of thermal conductivity in unconventional superconductors for a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. Our work employs the non-equilibrium Keldysh formulation of the quasiclassical theory. We solve the transport equations using a variation of the Brandt-Pesch-Tewordt (BPT) method, that accounts for the quasiparticle scattering on vortices. We focus on the dependence of the thermal conductivity on the direction of the field with the respect to the nodes of the order parameter, and discuss it in the context of experiments aiming to …
Unconventional superconductors have been long sought for their potential applications in quantum technologies and devices. A key challenge impeding this effort is the difficulty associated with probing and characterizing candidate materials and establishing their order parameter. In this Letter, we present a platform that allows us to spectroscopically probe unconventional superconductivity in thin-layer materials via the proximity effect. We show that inducing an s-wave gap in a sample with an intrinsic d-wave instability leads to the formation of bound-states of quasiparticle pairs, which ma…
Among the mysteries surrounding unconventional, strongly correlated superconductors is the possibility of spatial variations in their superfluid density. We use atomic-resolution Josephson scanning tunneling microscopy to reveal a strongly inhomogeneous superfluid in the iron-based superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45. By simultaneously measuring the topographic and electronic properties, we find that this inhomogeneity in the superfluid density is not caused by structural disorder or strong inter-pocket scattering, and does not correlate with variations in Cooper pair-breaking gap. Instead, we see a…
The theory of quasiparticle interference (QPI) for non-centrosymmetric (NCS) superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is developed using T-matrix theory in Born approximation. We show that qualitatively new effects in the QPI pattern originate from the Rashba spin-orbit coupling: The resulting spin coherence factors lead to a distinct difference of charge- and spin- QPI and to an induced spin anisotropy in the latter even for isotropic magnetic impurity scattering. In particular a cross - QPI appears describing the spin oscillation pattern due to nonmagnetic impurity scattering which is…
FeSe is an iron-based superconductor of immense current interest due to the large enhancements of Tc that occur when it is pressurized or grown as a single layer on an insulating substrate. Here we report precision measurements of its superconducting electrodynamics, at frequencies of 202 and 658 MHz and at temperatures down to 0.1 K. The quasiparticle conductivity reveals a rapid collapse in scattering on entering the superconducting state that is strongly reminiscent of unconventional superconductors such as cuprates, organics and the heavy fermion material CeCoIn5. At the lowest temperature…
The tetragonal compound Sr2RuO4 exhibits a chiral p-wave superconducting (SC) state of its three t2g-type conduction bands. The characteristics of unconventional gap structure are known from experiment, in particular field-angle resolved specific heat measurements and from microscopic theories. A rotated extremal structure on the main active SC band with respect to the nodal gaps on the passive bands was concluded. We propose that this gap structure can be further specified by applying the STM- quasiparticle interference (QPI) method. We calculate the QPI spectrum within a three band and chira…
Unconventional density waves (UDW) are one of the ground states in metallic crystalline solids and have been speculated already in 1968. However, more focused studies on UDW started only recently, perhaps after the identification of the low temperature phase in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 as unconventional charge density wave (UCDW) in 2002. More recently, the metallic phase of Bechgaard salts (TMTSF)_2X with X=PF_6 and ReO_4 under both pressure and magnetic field appears to be unconventional spin density wave (USDW). The pseudogap regime of high T_c superconductors LSCO, YBCO, Bi2212 and the…
We theoretically investigate the magnetic-field-angle dependence of the flux-flow resistivity $ρ_{\rm f}$ in unconventional superconductors. Two contributions to $ρ_{\rm f}$ are considered: one is the quasiparticle (QP) relaxation time $τ(\bm{k}_{\rm F})$ and the other is $ω_0(\bm{k}_{\rm F})$, which is a counterpart to the interlevel spacing of the QP bound states in the quasiclassical approach. Here, $\bm{k}_{\rm F}$ denotes the position on a Fermi surface. Numerical calculations are conducted for a line-node s-wave and a d-wave pair potential with the same anisotropy of their amplitudes, bu…
We consider an unconventional superconductor in a low frequency harmonic magnetic field. In the Meissner regime at low T a nonlinear magnetic response arises from quasiparticle excitations near minima in the energy gap. Various physical quantities then acquire higher harmonics of the frequency of the applied field. We discuss how examination of the field and angular dependence of these harmonics allows determination of the structure of the energy gap. We show how to distinguish nodes from small finite minima ("quasinodes"). Gaps with nodal lines give rise to universal power law field dependenc…
Quasiparticle dynamics of FeSe single crystals revealed by dual-color transient reflectivity measurements (ΔR/R) provides unprecedented information on Fe-based superconductors. The amplitude of fast component in ΔR/R clearly tells a competing scenario between spin fluctuations and superconductivity. Together with the transport measurements, the relaxation time analysis further exhibits anomalous changes at 90 K and 230 K. The former manifests a structure phase transition as well as the associated phonon softening. The latter suggests a previously overlooked phase transition or crossover in FeS…
The thermoelectric coefficient $η(T)$ in unconventional superconductors is enhanced below $T_c$ by intermediate strength impurity scattering that is intrinsically particle-hole asymmetric. We compute $η(T)$ for a strong-coupling d-wave superconductor and investigate the effects of inelastic scattering originating from electron-boson interactions. We show that $η(T)$ is severely suppressed at temperatures just below $T_c$ by a particle-hole symmetric inelastic scattering rate. At lower temperatures inelastic scattering is frozen out and $η(T)$ recovers and regains its large amplitude. In the li…
Recently there has been reinvigorated interest in the superconducting proximity effect, driven by predictions of the emergence of Majorana fermions. To help guide this search, we have developed a phenomenological model for the tunneling spectra in anisotropic superconductor-normal metal proximity devices. We combine successful approaches used in s-wave proximity and standard d-wave tunneling to reproduce tunneling spectra in d-wave proximity devices, and clarify the origin of various features. Different variations of the pair potential are considered, resulting from the proximity-induced super…
We perform time resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of optimally doped $\tn{Bi}_2\tn{Sr}_2\tn{CaCu}_2\tn{O}_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) and $\tn{Bi}_2\tn{Sr}_{2-x}\tn{La}_{x}\tn{Cu}\tn{O}_{6+δ}$ (Bi-2201). The electrons dynamics show that inelastic scattering by nodal quasiparticles decreases when the temperature is lowered below the critical value of the superconducting phase transition. This drop of electronic dissipation is astonishingly robust and survives to photoexcitation densities much larger than the value sustained by long-range superconductivity. The unconventional behaviour of qu…
