We combine $SO(10)$ Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) with $A_4$ modular symmetry and present a comprehensive analysis of the resulting quark and lepton mass matrices for all the simplest cases. We focus on the case where the three fermion families in the 16 dimensional spinor representation form a triplet of $Γ_3\simeq A_4$, with a Higgs sector comprising a single Higgs multiplet $H$ in the ${\mathbf{10}}$ fundamental representation and one Higgs field $\overlineΔ$ in the ${\mathbf{\overline{126}}}$ for the minimal models, plus and one Higgs field $Σ$ in the ${\mathbf{120}}$ for the non-minimal models, all with specified modular weights. The neutrino masses are generated by the type-I and/or type II seesaw mechanisms and results are presented for each model following an intensive numerical analysis where we have optimized the free parameters of the models in order to match the experimental data. For the phenomenologically successful models, we present the best fit results in numerical tabular form as well as showing the most interesting graphical correlations between parameters, including leptonic CP phases and neutrinoless double beta decay, which have yet to be measured, leading to definite predictions for each of the models.
We present a comprehensive analysis of neutrino mass and lepton mixing in theories with $A_4$ modular symmetry, where the only flavon field is the single modulus field $τ$, and all masses and Yukawa couplings are modular forms. Similar to previous analyses, we discuss all the simplest neutrino sectors arising from both the Weinberg operator and the type I seesaw mechanism, with lepton doublets and right-handed neutrinos assumed to be triplets of $A_4$. Unlike previous analyses, we allow right-handed charged leptons to transform as all combinations of $\mathbf{1}$, $\mathbf{1}'$ and $\mathbf{1}…

We propose to construct the finite modular groups from the quotient of two principal congruence subgroups as $Γ(N')/Γ(N")$, and the modular group $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ is extended to a principal congruence subgroup $Γ(N')$. The original modular invariant theory is reproduced when $N'=1$. We perform a comprehensive study of $Γ'_6$ modular symmetry corresponding to $N'=1$ and $N"=6$, five types of models for lepton masses and mixing with $Γ'_6$ modular symmetry are discussed and some example models are studied numerically. The case of $N'=2$ and $N"=6$ is considered, the finite modular group is $Γ(…
The lepton sector is studied within a flavored non-renormalizable model where the $\mathbf{S}_{3}\otimes \mathbf{Z}_{2}$ flavor symmetry drives the Yukawa couplings. In this framework, the effective neutrino mass, that comes from the type II see-saw mechanism, as well as the charged lepton mass matrices are hierarchical and possessed (under a benchmark in the charged sector) a kind of Fritzsch textures that achieve to accommodate the mixing angles in good agreement with the last experimental data. The model predicts a CP-violating phase consistent with the experimental data and the branching r…
We study a double covering of modular $A_4$ flavor symmetry in which we construct lepton models in cases of canonical seesaw and radiative seesaw models. Through $χ$ square numerical analysis, we show some predictions for the cases, depending on normal and inverted hierarchies.
We show how quark and lepton mass hierarchies can be reproduced in the framework of modular symmetry. The mechanism is analogous to the Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism, but without requiring any Abelian symmetry to be introduced, nor any Standard Model (SM) singlet flavon to break it. The modular weights of fermion fields play the role of FN charges, and SM singlet fields with non-zero modular weight called weightons play the role of flavons. We illustrate the mechanism by analysing $A_4$ (modular level 3) models of quark and lepton (including neutrino) masses and mixing, with a single modulus…
We study one-loop induced radiative seesaw model applying a modular $A_4$ flavor symmetry, in which the neutrino mass matrix is achieved by two different Yukawa couplings one of which also contributes to positive value of muon anomalous magnetic moment as well as lepton flavor violations. Thanks to the specific mass matrix via $A_4$ symmetry and its modular weight, we find several predictions for lepton sector through our numerical analysis.
We propose a new mechanism of stabilization for dark matter under fixed points of modular $A_4$ symmetry, thanks to recovering a residual symmetry for each of fixed points at $τ=ω,\ i, i\times\infty$. We find that a model at $τ=i$ successfully reproduces the neutrino oscillation data without conflict of the DM stability.
In this paper, we have realized the left-right symmetric model with modular symmetry. We have used $Γ$(3) modular group which is isomorphic to non-abelian discrete symmetry group $A_4$. The advantage of using modular symmetry is the non-requirement for the use of extra particles called 'flavons'. In this model, the Yukawa couplings are expressed in terms of modular forms $(Y_1,Y_2,Y_3)$. In this work, we have studied minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model for both type-I and type-II dominances. Here, we have calculated the values for the Yukawa couplings and then plotted it against the sum of the …
We discuss an inverse seesaw model based on right-handed fermion specific $U(1)$ gauge symmetry and $A_4$-modular symmetry. These symmetries forbid unnecessary terms and restrict structures of Yukawa interactions which are relevant to inverse seesaw mechanism. Then we can obtain some predictions in neutrino sector such as Dirac-CP phase and sum of neutrino mass, which are shown by our numerical analysis. Besides the relation among masses of heavy pseudo-Dirac neutrino can be obtained since it is also restricted by the modular symmetry. We also discuss implications to lepton flavor violation an…
We propose a lepton model under modular $A_4$ and gauged $U(1)_R$ symmetries, in which the neutrino masses are induced at one-loop level. Thanks to the modular $A_4$ symmetry, we have several predictions on the lepton sector, especially, on fixed points of $τ=i,ω\equiv e^{2πi/3},i\times \infty$ each of which has remnant symmetry; $Z_2$ for $τ=i$ and $Z_3$ for $τ=ω, i\infty$. These points are favored by a string theory and phenomenologically interesting.
We construct an effective hadronic model including single heavy baryons (SHBs) belonging to the $(\mathbf{3},\mathbf{3})$ representation under $\mbox{SU}(3)_L \times \mbox{SU}(3)_R$ symmetry, respecting the chiral symmetry and heavy-qaurk spin-flavor symmetry. When the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, the SHBs are divided into the baryons with negative parity of $\bar{\mathbf 3}$ representation under $\mbox{SU}(3)$ flavor symmetry which is the chiral partners to the ones with positive parity of ${\mathbf 6}$ representation. We determine the model parameters from the available experimen…
We propose a radiative seesaw model based on a modular $A_4$ symmetry, which has good predictability in the lepton sector. We execute a numerical analysis to search for parameters that satisfy the experimental constraints such as those from neutrino oscillation data and lepton flavor violations. Then, we present several predictions in our model that originate from the modular symmetry at a fixed point as well as fundamental region of $τ$.
We study $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_R$ models with modular $A_4$ symmetry that provide unified description of the quark and lepton sector including the flavor structures. The models are distinguished by the assignments of the modular weight on matter superfields. We carry out numerical $χ^2$ analysis and search for parameter sets that accomodate the experimental results. We provide a benchmark point for each model to illustrate implications of our models.
We study a Zee-Babu model in a modular $A_4$ flavor symmetry, in which we search for several predictions such as phases, sum of neutrino masses, and neutrinoless double beta decay, satisfying neutrino oscillation data in a minimum framework of the charge assignments of modular weight. We perform $Δχ^2$ analysis to get our results and find $τ$ is localized nearby at one of the fixed points of $i\times \infty$ for both of normal and inverted mass hierarchies.
We propose a quark-lepton model via leptoquarks and modular $A_4$ symmetry. Since the neutrino mass is induced at one-loop level mediated by down quarks as well as leptoquarks, we have to explain lepton and quark masses and mixings with a single modulus $τ$. Here, we find predictions for lepton and quark sectors with unified modulus $τ$, and show several constraints originating from leptoquarks.
We present a comprehensive analysis of neutrino mass and lepton mixing in theories with $A_5$ modular symmetry. We construct the weight 2, weight 4 and weight 6 modular forms of level 5 in terms of Dedekind eta-functions and Klein forms, and their decomposition into irreducible representation of $A_5$. We construct all the simplest models based on $A_5$ modular symmetry, including scenarios of models with and without flavons in the charged lepton sectors. For each case, the neutrino masses can be generated through either the Weinberg operator or the type I seesaw mechanism. We perform an exhau…
We propose models to explain the hierarchies of the quark masses and mixing by utilizing the $S_4^\prime$ modular flavor symmetry. The hierarchy is realized by the modulus $τ$ stabilized at $\mathrm{Im}\,τ\gg 1$, where the residual $Z_4^T$ symmetry is approximately unbroken and the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism works. It is found that the quark hierarchies are realized only in a few cases of quark representations. We study two models with assigning the modular weights, so that the observed quark hierarchies are explained in the cases of both small and large ratios of the top to bottom Yukawa coup…
We discuss a linear seesaw model with as minimum field content as possible, introducing a modular $S_4$ with the help of gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetries. Due to rank two neutrino mass matrix, we have a vanishing neutrino mass eigenvalue, and only the normal mass hierarchy of neutrinos is favored through the modular $S_4$ symmetry. In our numerical $Δχ^2$ analysis, we especially find rather sharp prediction on sum of neutrino masses to be around $60$ meV in addition to the other predictions.
We propose a model with radiatively induced neutrino mass at two-loop level, applying modular $A_4$ symmetry. The neutrino mass matrix is formulated where the structure of associated couplings are restricted by the symmetry. Then we show several predictions in the lepton sector, satisfying lepton flavor violations as well as neutrino oscillation data. We also discuss muon anomalous magnetic moment and briefly comment on dark matter candidate.
We propose a predictive lepton model under a modular $S_4$ symmetry, where the neutrino mass matrix arises from a radiative seesaw at one-loop level. The tree-level mass matrix is forbidden by well-assigned modular weights, which also play an important role in stabilizing dark matter candidate due to a remnant $Z_2$ symmetry even after breaking the modular symmetry. Supposing three families of the Majorana neutrinos, right-handed charged-leptons and left-handed charged-leptons to be embedded respectively into singlet, doublet, and triplet under $S_4$, we obtain the predictive mass matrices in …
We make an attempt to study neutrino phenomenology in the framework of type-III seesaw by considering $A_4$ modular symmetry in the super-symmetric context. In addition, we have included a local $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry which eventually helps us to avoid certain unwanted terms in the superpotential. Hitherto, the seesaw being type-III, it involves three fermion triplet superfields $Σ_R$, along with which, we have included a singlet weighton field $(ρ)$. In here, modular symmetry plays a crucial role by avoiding the usage of excess flavon (weighton) fields. Also, the Yukawa couplings acquire modul…
We study the modulus stabilization in an $A_4$ model whose $A_4$ flavor symmetry is originated from the $S_4$ modular symmetry. We can stabilize the modulus so that the $A_4$ invariant superpotential leads to the realistic lepton masses and mixing angles. We also discuss the phenomenological aspect of the present model as a consequence of the modulus stabilization.
We study a flavor model with $A_4$ symmetry which originates from $S_4$ modular group. In $S_4$ symmetry, $Z_2$ subgroup can be anomalous, and then $S_4$ can be violated to $A_4$. Starting with a $S_4$ symmetric Lagrangian at the tree level, the Lagrangian at the quantum level has only $A_4$ symmetry when $Z_2$ in $S_4$ is anomalous. We obtain modular forms of two singlets and a triplet representations of $A_4$ by decomposing $S_4$ modular forms into $A_4$ representations. We propose a new $A_4$ flavor model of leptons by using those $A_4$ modular forms. We succeed in constructing a viable neu…
We study the modular symmetry anomaly in magnetized orbifold models. The non-perturbative effects such as D-brane instanton effects can break tree-level symmetry. We study which part of the modular symmetry is broken explicitly by Majorana mass terms with three generations of neutrinos. The modular weight of neutrino mass terms does not match with other coupling terms in tree-level Lagrangian. In addition, the $Z_N$ symmetry of the modular flavor symmetry is broken and a certain normal subgroup of the modular flavor symmetry remains in neutrino mass terms.
We revisit the modular flavor symmetry from a more general perspective. The scalar modular forms of principal congruence subgroups are extended to the vector-valued modular forms, then we have more possible finite modular groups including $Γ_N$ and $Γ'_N$ as the flavor symmetry. The theory of vector-valued modular forms provide a method of differential equation to construct the modular multiplets, and it also reveals the simple structure of the modular invariant mass models. We review the theory of vector-valued modular forms and give general results for the lower dimensional vector-valued mod…
We study the modular symmetry of soft supersymmetry breaking terms. Soft scalar masses and $A$-term coefficients are invariant under the modular symmetry when we regard $F$-term as a spurion with the modular weight $-2$. Their flavor structure is determined by the same symmetry as Yukawa couplings, i.e., fermion masses. The modular symmetric behavior of $μ$-term and $B$-term depends on how the $μ$-term is generated.
The $SU(2)$ unitary matrix $U$ employed in hadronic low-energy processes has both exponential and analytic representations, related by $ U = \exp\left[ i \mathbfτ \cdot \hat{\mathbfπ} θ\,\right] = \cosθI + i \mathbfτ \cdot \hat{\mathbfπ} \sinθ$. One extends this result to the $SU(3)$ unitary matrix by deriving an analytic expression which, for Gell-Mann matrices $\mathbfλ$, reads $ U= \exp\left[ i \mathbf{v} \cdot \mathbfλ \right] = \left[ \left( F + \tfrac{2}{3} G \right) I + \left( H \hat{\mathbf{v}} + \tfrac{1}{\sqrt{3}} G \hat{\mathbf{b}} \right) \cdot \mathbfλ \, \right] + i \left[ \left(…
We study modular symmetry anomalies in four-dimensional low-energy effective field theory, which is derived from six-dimensional supersymmetric $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory by magnetic flux compactification. The gauge symmetry $U(N)$ is broken to $U(N_a) \times U(N_b)$ by magnetic fluxes. It is found that Abelian subgroup of the modular symmetry corresponding to discrete part of $U(1)$ can be anomalous, but other elements independent of $U(1)$ in the modular symmetry are always anomaly-free.
We study the modular invariance in magnetized torus models. Modular invariant flavor model is a recently proposed hypothesis for solving the flavor puzzle, where the flavor symmetry originates from modular invariance. In this framework coupling constants such as Yukawa couplings are also transformed under the flavor symmetry. We show that the low-energy effective theory of magnetized torus models is invariant under a specific subgroup of the modular group. Since Yukawa couplings as well as chiral zero modes transform under the modular group, the above modular subgroup (referred to as modular f…
The formalism of combined finite modular and generalised CP (gCP) symmetries for theories of flavour is developed. The corresponding consistency conditions for the two symmetry transformations acting on the modulus $τ$ and on the matter fields are derived. The implications of gCP symmetry in theories of flavour based on modular invariance described by finite modular groups are illustrated with the example of a modular $S_4$ model of lepton flavour. Due to the addition of the gCP symmetry, viable modular models turn out to be more constrained, with the modulus $τ$ being the only source of CP vi…
We study Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) like flavor models with modular symmetry. The FN mechanism is a convincing solution to the flavor puzzle in quark sector. The FN mechanism requires an extra $U(1)$ gauge symmetry which is broken at high energy. Alternatively, in the framework of modular symmetry the modular weights can play the role of the FN charges of the extra $U(1)$ symmetry. Based on the FN-like mechanism with modular symmetry we present new flavor models for quark sector. Assuming that the three generations have a common representation under modular symmetry, our models simply reproduce the…
We explore the geometrical origin of CP and the spontaneous CP violation in Calabi-Yau compactifications. We find that the CP symmetry is identified with an outer automorphism of the symplectic modular group in the large complex structure regime of Calabi-Yau threefolds, thereby enlarging the symplectic modular group to their semidirect product group. The spontaneous CP violation is realized by the introduction of fluxes, whose effective action is invariant under CP as well as the discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry or $\mathbb{Z}_4$ R-symmetry. We explicitly demonstrate the spontaneous CP violat…
We study the modular symmetry of zero-modes on $T_1^2 \times T_2^2$ and orbifold compactifications with magnetic fluxes, $M_1,M_2$, where modulus parameters are identified. This identification breaks the modular symmetry of $T^2_1 \times T^2_2$, $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})_1 \times SL(2,\mathbb{Z})_2$ to $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})\equivΓ$. Each of the wavefunctions on $T^2_1 \times T^2_2$ and orbifolds behaves as the modular forms of weight 1 for the principal congruence subgroup $Γ$($N$), $N$ being 2 times the least common multiple of $M_1$ and $M_2$. Then, zero-modes transform each other under the modular symm…
The framework of compactified heterotic string theory offers consistent ultraviolet (UV) completions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. In this approach, the existence of flavor symmetries beyond the SM is imperative and the flavor symmetries can be derived from the top-down. Such a derivation uncovers a unified origin of traditional discrete flavor symmetries, discrete modular flavor symmetries, discrete R symmetries of supersymmetry, as well as CP symmetry - altogether called the eclectic flavor symmetry. I will show a specific example of such a top-down derived eclectic flavor …
