The present work discusses the micro-mechanism of low cycle fatigue (LCF) crack growth in smooth bar specimens of Haynes 282. Two parametric approaches, i.e. crack tip opening angle (CTOA) and maximum tangential stress (θMTS) have been opted to characterize the cracks. CTOA variations along with a propagating crack, exhibit a non-linear decay followed by a stabilized regime. Mixicity of local KI and KII fields is directly proportional to θMTS and that can be assessed by measuring local deflections. Around the crack, the role of grain incompatibility has been addressed through EBSD and slip transfer analysis. There is a critical bound for Elastic Modulus (EM) and Schmid factor (SF) for the grains favouring subsurface crack propagation, and these values exist beyond a limiting threshold. The SF-EM maps mark the regions of cracked and uncracked grains in the material. The favourable twin-matrix incompatibility of the microstructure has also been identified about the fatigue crack growth and twins in (211) plane is abundant in the cracked region. A detailed slip transfer analysis based on the Luster-Morris parameter (LMP) has been carried out for investigating the interrelation between slip activity, elasto-plastic incompatibility, and grain boundary geometry.
Crack initiation and propagation under high-cycle fatigue conditions have been investigated for a polycrystalline Ni-based superalloy by in-situ synchrotron assisted diffraction and phase contrast tomography. The cracks nucleated along the longest coherent twin boundaries pre-existing on the specimen surface, that were well oriented for slip and that presented a large elastic incompatibility across them. Moreover, the propagation of microstructurally short cracks was found to be determined by the easy slip transfer paths across the pre-existing grain boundaries. This information can only be ob…
Titanium is commonly added to nickel superalloys but has a well-documented detrimental effect on oxidation resistance. The present work constitutes the first atomistic-scale quantitative measurements of grain boundary and bulk compositions in the oxide scale of a current generation polycrystalline nickel superalloy performed through atom probe tomography. Titanium was found to be particularly detrimental to oxide scale growth through grain boundary diffusion.
The microstructural characteristics of a single crystalline nickel based superalloy (AM1) tested under high temperature fatigue at 950$^\circ$C are reported. For repeated fatigue (R$_\varepsilon$=0) through a range of cycle numbers N with imposed total strain amplitude $Δ\varepsilon^t$, two main types of behaviour are found depending on N and $Δ\varepsilon^t$. This allows a map of microstructures versus the number of cycles N and $Δ\varepsilon^t$ to be constructed. A domain called A presents anisotropic microstructures due either to a partition of the plasticity throughout the k channels, or t…
This work is focused on the micromechanical modelling of the low cycle fatigue of the nickel based $γ/γ'$ superalloy AM1 at high temperature. The nature of the activated slip systems in the different types of channels of the $γ$ phase is analysed, taking into account the combined effects of the applied and internal stresses. The latter are split into two contributions, misfit stresses and compatibility stresses between the elastic $γ'$ phase and the elasto-plastic $γ$ phase, which are estimated within a simplified composite approach. Internal stresses may induce slip activity and/or be relaxed…
In the present work, theoretical approaches, based on grain orientation dependent Young's modulus and Schmid factor are used to describe the influence of local grain orientation on crack initiation behaviour of the coarse grained nickel base superalloy René80. Especially for strongly anisotropic crystal structures with large grain size, such as the investigated material, the local elastic properties must be taken into account for assessment of fatigue crack initiation. With an extension of Schmid's law, the resulting shear stress amplitude, which triggers local cyclic plastic deformation, can …
We have investigated the coarsening mechanism of intergranular Cr-rich M2B borides after creep and annealing at 850C for approximately 3000 hours in a polycrystalline nickel-based superalloy. Borides were found to be coarser after creep, with measured thicknesses in the range of 800-1100nm, compared to borides annealed in the absence of external applied load (400-600nm). The borides had a thickness of 100-200nm before exposure at 850C. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that coarsened borides have either the tetragonal I4/mcm structure, or the orthorhombic Fddd, with those two structure…
The microstructural and compositional evolution of intergranular carbides and borides prior to and after creep deformation at 850 $^\circ$C in a polycrystalline nickel-based superalloy was studied. Primary MC carbides, enveloped within intergranular $\rm γ'$ layers, decomposed resulting in the formation of layers of the undesirable $\rm η$ phase. These layers have a composition corresponding to Ni$_{3}$Ta as measured by atom probe tomography and their structure is consistent with the D0$_{24}$ hexagonal structure as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. Electron backscattered diffracti…
The service lives of nickel superalloys are often limited by environmental degradation. The present study compares oxidation, sulfidation and hot corrosion at 750C of three variants of a polycrystalline superalloy: a baseline alloy, a variant containing 1wt% Mn and one containing 0.5wt% Si. Mn reduced the oxidation rate without changing the scale morphology. The MnCr2O4 scale formed proved more protective against sulfidation and hot corrosion, but internal sulfides extended the damage depth. Si modified the oxide morphology to a continuous Cr2O3-Al2O3 dual layer. This provided improved protect…
Predicting the mechanical failure of parts in service requires understanding their deformation behavior, and associated dynamic microstructural evolution up to the near-atomic scale. Solutes are known to interact with defects generated by plastic deformation, thereby affecting their displacement throughout the microstructure and hence the material mechanical response to solicitation. This effect is studied here in a polycrystalline Ni-based superalloy with two different Nb contents that lead to a significant change in their creep lifetime. Creep testing at 750C and 600 MPa shows that the high-…
We investigate the hot cracking susceptibility and creep resistance of three versions of a nickel-based superalloy with different contents of boron, carbon and zirconium fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. Crack-free and creep resistant components are achieved for alloys with boron, carbon and no zirconium. We then rationalize this result by evaluating how boron, carbon and zirconium are distributed at grain boundaries in the as-built and heat-treated microstructures of an alloy containing all these elements. Observations are conducted by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and a…
Statistical distribution of switching times is a key information necessary to describe the dynamic response of a polycrystalline bulk ferroelectric to an applied electric field. The Inhomogeneous Field Mechanism (IFM) model offers a useful tool which allows extraction of this information from polarization switching measurements over a large time window. In this paper, the model was further developed to account for the presence of non-switchable regions in fatigued materials. Application of the IFM- analysis to bipolar electric cycling induced fatigue process of various lead-based and lead-free…
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to investigate the fatigue deformation behaviour of polycrystalline Cu with grain size of 5.4 nm. The samples were prepared using Voronoi algorithm with random grain orientations. Fatigue simulations were carried out by employing fully reversed, total strain controlled cyclic loading at strain amplitude of $\pm4$\% for 10 cycles. The MD simulation results indicated that the deformation behaviour under cyclic loading is dominated by the slip of partial dislocations enclosing the stacking faults. At higher number of cycles, the grain bounda…
Fatigue failure in ferroelectrics has been intensively investigated in the past few decades. Most of the mechanisms discussed for ferroelectric fatigue have been built on the "hypothesis of variation in charged defects", which however are rarely evidenced by experimental observation. Here, using a combination of complex impedance spectra techniques, piezoresponse force microscopy and first-principles theory, we examine the microscopic evolution and redistribution of charged defects during the electrical cycling in BiFeO3 thin films. The dynamic formation and melting behaviors of oxygen vacancy…
A microstructure-based model that accounts for the effect of grain size has been developed to study the effect of grain size on the fatigue life of Inconel 718 alloys. The fatigue behavior of two alloys with different grain size was determined by means of uniaxial cyclic deformation tests under fully-reversed deformation ($R_\varepsilon$ = -1) at 400$^\circ$C in the low cycle fatigue regime. The model was based in the determination of the fatigue indicator parameter (based on the local crystallographic strain energy dissipated per cycle) by means of computational homogenization of a representa…
The tensile creep performance of a polycrystalline Co/Ni-base superalloy with a multimodal gamma prime distribution has been examined at 800C and 300MPa. The rupture life of the alloy is comparable to that of RR1000 tested under similar conditions. Microstructural examination of the alloy after testing revealed the presence of continuous gamma prime precipitates and M23C6 carbides along the grain boundaries. Intragranularly, coarsening of the secondary gamma prime precipitates occurred at the expense of the fine tertiary gamma prime. Long planar deformation bands, free of gamma prime, were als…
A micromechanical model at the microscale within a crystal plasticity self-consistent model, is used to analyse loading histories in Type 316H stainless steel, common to structural components in high-temperature power plants. The study compares the SCM predictions on changes in mechanical behaviour and creep properties to analyses via the UK R5 structural assessment code. Plant-relevant cyclic-creep histories in Type 316H stainless steel at 550C are examined with focus on the estimation of accumulated creep strain. This aims to quantify how better understanding of creep deformation under cycli…
A microstructure-sensitive fatigue life prediction framework based on CP-FFT is proposed to study SLM fabricated Hastelloy-X. The microstructure enters in the model through the shape, size and orientation distributions of grains in the RVEs, which are generated from experimental EBSD data. The framework has been applied to specimens built in two different directions with different polycrystalline microstructures and is able to accurately predict their fatigue life, using just two experiments for calibration. The model reproduces the better fatigue performance found experimentally at high stres…
A microstructure-based model is presented to predict the fatigue life of polycrystalline metallic alloys which present a bilinear Coffin-Manson relationship. The model is based in the determination of the maximum value of a fatigue indicator parameter obtained from the plastic energy dissipated by cycle in the microstructure. The fatigue indicator parameter was obtained by means of the computational homogenization of a representative volume element of the microstructure using a crystal-plasticity finite element model. The microstructure-based model was applied to predict the low cyclic fatigue…
Strain-controlled fatigue of Mg-1Mn-0.5Nd (wt.\%) alloy were studied by experiment and simulation. The microstructure was made up of a dispersion of strongly texture grains (13\%) embedded in a matrix of grains with a random texture. The cyclic stress-strain curves showed limited tension-compression anisotropy because of the limited texture. Cyclic hardening under compression and cyclic softening under tension occurred due to the presence of twinning. Moreover, the twin volume fraction of the broken samples depended on whether the sample was broken in tension or compression, indicating that tw…
