We use a convolutional neural network to retrieve the internuclear distance in the two-dimensional H$_2^{+}$ molecule ionized by a strong few-cycle laser pulse based on the photoelectron momentum distribution. We show that a neural network trained on a relatively small dataset consisting of a few thousand of images can predict the internuclear distance with an absolute error less than 0.1 a.u. We study the effect of focal averaging, and we find that the convolutional neural network trained using the focal averaged electron momentum distributions also shows a good performance in reconstructing the internuclear distance.
We investigate the application of deep learning to the retrieval of the internuclear distance in the two-dimensional H$_2^{+}$ molecule from the momentum distribution of photoelectrons produced by strong-field ionization. We study the effect of the carrier-envelope phase on the prediction of the internuclear distance with a convolutional neural network. We apply the transfer learning technique to make our convolutional neural network applicable to distributions obtained for parameters outside the ranges of the training data. The convolutional neural network is compared with alternative approac…
In the present paper, we investigate the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from diatomic molecules with large internuclear distance using a strong field approximation (SFA) model. We find that the hump and dip structure emerges in the plateau region of the harmonic spectrum, and the location of this striking structure is sensitive to the laser intensity. Our model analysis reveals that two-center interference as well as the interference between different recombination electron trajectories are responsible for the unusual enhanced or suppressed harmonic yield at a certain order, and these in…
We calculate angle-resolved above-threshold ionization spectra for diatomic molecules in linearly polarized laser fields, employing the strong-field approximation. The interference structure resulting from the individual contributions of the different scattering scenarios is discussed in detail, with respect to the dependence on the internuclear distance and molecular orientation. We show that, in general, the contributions from the processes in which the electron is freed at one center and rescatters off the other obscure the interference maxima and minima obtained from single-center processe…
We analyze the influence of different recombination scenarios, involving one or two centers, on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in diatomic molecules, for different values of the internuclear separation. We work within the strong-field approximation, and employ modified saddle-point equations, in which the structure of the molecule is incorporated. We find that the two-center interference patterns, attributed to high-order harmonic emission at spatially separated centers, are formed by the quantum interference of the orbits starting at a center $C_{j}$ and finishing at a different center …
Using the semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization we investigate the interference structures emerging in strong-field photoelectron holography, taking into account the Coulomb potential of the atomic core. For every kind of the interference pattern predicted by the three-step model, we calculate the corresponding structure in the presence of the Coulomb field, showing that the Coulomb potential modifies the interference patterns significantly.
We use orthogonally polarized two-colour (OTC) laser pulses to separate quantum paths in multiphoton ionization of Ar atoms. Our OTC pulses consist of 400~nm and 800~nm light at a relative intensity ratio of 10:1. We find a hitherto unobserved interference in the photoelectron momentum distribution, which exhibits a strong dependence on the relative phase of the OTC pulse. Analysis of model calculations reveal that the interference is caused by quantum pathways from non-adjacent quarter cycles.
The ionization of an atom by a high-frequency intense laser pulse, where the energy of a single-photon is sufficient to ionize the system, is investigated from first principles. It is shown that as a consequence of an AC Stark effect in the continuum, the energy of the photoelectron follows the envelope of the laser pulse. This is demonstrated to result in strong dynamic interference of the photoelectrons of the same kinetic energy emitted at different times. Numerically exact computations on the hydrogen atom demonstrate that the dynamic interference spectacularly modifies the photoionization…
We measure the photoelectron energy spectra from strong-field ionization of Kr in a two-color laser pulse consisting of a strong 400-nm field and a weak 800-nm field. The intensities of the main above-threshold ionization (ATI) and sideband peaks in the photoelectron energy spectra oscillate roughly oppositely with respect to the relative phase between the two-color components. We study the photoelectron interferometry in strong-field ATI regime from the view of interference of different electron trajectories in order to extend RABBITT type analysis to the strong-field regime. Based on the str…
In this paper, we discuss the possibility of imaging molecular orbitals from photoelectron spectra obtained via Laser Induced Electron Diffraction (LIED) in linear molecules. This is an extension of our work published recently in Physical Review A \textbf{94}, 023421 (2016) to the case of the HOMO-1 orbital of the carbon dioxide molecule. We show that such an imaging technique has the potential to image molecular orbitals at different internuclear distances in a sub-femtosecond time scale and with a resolution of a fraction of an Angström.
Wave-particle duality is an inherent peculiarity of the quantum world. The double-slit experiment has been frequently used for understanding different aspects of this fundamental concept. The occurrence of interference rests on the lack of which-way information and on the absence of decoherence mechanisms, which could scramble the wave fronts. In this letter, we report on the observation of two-center interference in the molecular frame photoelectron momentum distribution upon ionization of the neon dimer by a strong laser field. Postselection of ions, which were measured in coincidence with e…
A novel and universal interference structure is found in the photoelectron momentum distribution of atoms in intense infrared laser field. Theoretical analysis shows that this structure can be attributed to a new form of Coulomb-field-driven backward-scattering of photoelectrons in the direction perpendicular to the laser field, in contrast to the conventional rescattering along the laser polarization direction. This transverse backward-scattering process is closely related to a family of photoelectrons initially ionized within a time interval of less than 200 attosecond around the crest of th…
Multipath holographic interference in strong-field quantum tunnel ionization is key to revealing sub-Angstrom attosecond dynamics for molecular movies. This critical sub-cycle motion is often obscured by longer time-scale effects such as ring-shaped patterns that appear in above-threshold ionization (ATI). In the present work, we overcome this problem by combining two novel techniques in theory and experimental analysis: unit-cell averaging and time-filtering data and simulations. Together these suppress ATI rings and enable an unprecedented highly-detailed quantitative match between strong-fi…
We provide approximate analytic expressions for above-threshold ionization (ATI) transition probabilities and photoelectron angular distributions (PADs). These analytic expressions are more general than those existing in the literature and include the residual binding potential in the electron continuum propagation. They successfully reproduce the ATI side lobes and specific holographic structures such as the near-threshold fan-shaped pattern and the spider-like structure that extends up to relatively high photoelectron energies. We compare such expressions with the Coulomb quantum orbit stron…
For a molecule, the two-center interference and the molecular scattering phase of the electron are important for almost all the processes that may occur in a laser field. In this study, we investigate their effects in the transfer of linear photon momentum to the ionized electron by absorbing a single photon. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation of H$_2^+$ is numerically solved in {the multipolar} gauge in which the electric quadrupole term and the magnetic dipole term are explicitly expressed. This allows us to separate the contributions of the two terms in the momentum transfer. For diffe…
Nondipole effects in the atomic dynamic interference are investigated by numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation~(TDSE) of hydrogen. It is found that the inclusion of nondipole corrections in the TDSE can induce momentum shifts of photoelectrons in the opposite direction of the laser propagation. The magnitude of the momentum shift is roughly proportional to the laser peak intensity and to the momentum component of the photoelectron along the laser propagation. By including the nondipole corrections of the Volkov phase into a semi-analytical model previously developed under…
We investigate theoretically the photoelectron momentum distribution (PMD) of the ionized atoms irradiated by a linearly polarized intense laser, focusing on the holography interference patterns in PMD that carry important information of the initial wavefunction of a tunneled electron and its experienced atomic potential in rescattering. With the help of Dyson series and semiclassical propagator, we calculate the scattering amplitudes in the cylindrical coordinate representation. In contrast to conventional recognitions that the photoelectron holography is the interference of two branches of e…
We use a quantum trajectory-based semi-classical method to account for Coulomb interaction between the photoelectron and the parent ion in the classically forbidden, sub-barrier region during strong-field tunneling ionization processes. We show that---besides the well-known modification of the tunneling ionization probability---there is also an influence on the interference pattern in the photoelectron spectra. In the long-wavelength limit, the shift of the intra-cycle interference fringes caused by sub-barrier Coulomb effects in the laser polarization direction can be derived analytically. We…
An autoionizing resonance in molecular N$_2$ is excited by an ultrashort XUV pulse and probed by a subsequent weak IR pulse, which ionizes the contributing Rydberg states. Time- and angular-resolved photoelectron spectra recorded with a velocity map imaging spectrometer reveal two electronic contributions with different angular distributions. One of them has an exponential decay rate of $20\pm5$ fs, while the other one is shorter than 10 fs. This observation is interpreted as a manifestation of interference stabilization involving the two overlapping discrete Rydberg states. A formalism of int…
Strong-field photoelectron holography denotes the interference of various electron paths in laser-induced ionization of atoms, leading to interference patterns in the final momentum distribution. For a quantitative description of holography beyond the electric dipole approximation and in the presence of the Coulomb potential, we develop a semiclassical model in which the initial conditions of outgoing electrons are set according to the beyond-dipole strong-field approximation for the ionization step. The phases associated with trajectories are evaluated following the prescription for semiclass…
We extend the semiclassical two-step model [Phys. Rev. A 94, 013415 (2016)] to include a multielectron polarization-induced dipole potential. Using this model we investigate the imprints of multielectron effects in the momentum distributions of photoelectrons ionized by a linearly polarized laser pulse. We predict narrowing of the longitudinal momentum distributions due to electron focusing by the induced dipole potential. We show that the polarization of the core also modifies interference structures in the photoelectron momentum distributions. Specifically, the number of fanlike interference…
A theoretical study of ionization of the hydrogen atom due to an XUV pulse in the presence of an IR laser is presented. Well-established theories are usually used to describe the problem of laser assisted photoelectron effect. However, the well-known soft-photon approximation firstly posed by Maquet et al in Journal of Modern Optics 54, 1847 (2007) and Kazansky's theory in Phys. Rev. A 82, 033420 (2010) completely fails to predict the electron emission prependicularly to the polarization direction. Making use of a simple semiclassical model, we study the angle-resolved energy distribution of p…
We demonstrate coherent control over the photoelectron circular dichroism in randomly oriented chiral molecules, based on quantum interference between multiple photoionization pathways. To significantly enhance the chiral signature, we use a finite manifold of indistinguishable $(1+1^\prime)$ REMPI pathways interfering at a common photoelectron energy but probing different intermediate states. We show that this coherent control mechanism maximizes the number of molecular states that constructively contribute to the dichroism at an optimal photoelectron energy and thus outperforms other schemes…
We study the ionization of atomic hydrogen in the direction of polarization due to a linearly polarized XUV pulse in the presence a strong field IR. We describe the photoelectron spectra as an interference problem in the time domain. Electron trajectories steming from different optical laser cycles give rise to intercycle interference energy peaks known as sidebands. These sidebands are modulated by a grosser structure coming from the intracycle interference of the two electron trajectories born during the same optical cycle. We make use of a simple semiclassical model which offers the possibi…
Ionization by relativistically intense laser pulses of finite duration is considered in the framework of strong-field quantum electrodynamics. Our main focus is on the formation of ionization supercontinua. More specifically, when studying the energy distributions of photoelectrons ionized by circularly polarized pulses, we observe the appearance of broad structures lacking the interference patterns. These supercontinua extend over hundreds of driving photon energies, thus corresponding to high-order nonlinear processes. The corresponding polar-angle distributions show asymmetries which are at…
Coherence among rotational ion channels during photoionization is exploited to control the anisotropy of the resulting photoelectron angular distributions at specific photoelectron energies. The strategy refers to a robust and single parameter control using two ultra-short light pulses delayed in time. The first pulse prepares a superposition of a few ion rotational states, whereas the second pulse serves as a probe that gives access to a control of the molecular asymmetry parameter $β$ for individual rotational channels. This is achieved by tuning the time delay between the pulses leading to …
We propose a two-dimensional interferometry based on electron wave packet interference with a cycle-shaped orthogonally polarized two-color laser field. With such method, sub-cycle and inter-cycle interferences can be disentangled into different direction in the measured photoelectron momentum spectra. With the cycle-shaped laser field, the Coulomb influence can be minimized and the overlapping of interference fringes with the complicate low-energy structures can be avoided as well. The contributions of excitation effect and long-range Coulomb potential can be traced in the Fourier domain of t…
We analyze the photoelectron angular distribution in two-pathway interference between non\-resonant one-photon and resonant two-photon ionization of neon. We consider a bichromatic femtosecond XUV pulse whose fundamental frequency is tuned near the $2p^5 3s$ atomic states of neon. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved and the results are employed to compute the angular distribution and the associated anisotropy parameters at the main photoelectron line. We also employ a time-dependent perturbative approach, which allows obtaining information on the process for a large range of puls…
We perform a systematic analysis of how ultrafast photoelectron holography is influenced by an elliptically polarized field, with emphasis on quantum interference effects. We find that the interplay of the external field and the binding potential leads to twisted holographic patterns for low ellipticities and recover well-known angular offsets for high ellipticities. Using the Coulomb quantum-orbit strong-field approximation (CQSFA), we assess how the field ellipticity affects specific holographic patterns, such as the fan and the spider. The interplay of the external field and the binding pot…
Recent experiments [D. Pengel, S. Kerbstadt, L. Englert, T. Bayer, and M. Wollenhaupt, \href{https://journals.aps.org/pra/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevA.96.043426}{{\PRA} {\bf 96} 043426 (2017)}] have measured the photoelectron momentum distribution for three-photon ionization of potassium by counter-rotating circularly polarized 790-nm laser pulses. The distribution displays spiral vortices, arising from the interference of ionizing wavepackets with different magnetic quantum numbers. The high level of multidimensional detail observed in the distribution makes this an ideal case in which to demons…
High-order above-threshold ionization (HATI) spectrum in IR+XUV two-color laser fields has been investigated. We found that the quantum features corresponding to the absorption of the XUV photon is well illustrated by a peculiar dip structure in the second plateau of the HATI spectrum. By the channel analysis, we show that the angular distribution of the spectrum is attributed to the coherent summation over contributions of different channels, and the dip structure in the spectrum is directly related to the absorption of one XUV photon of the ionized electron during the laser-assisted collisio…
We study non-classical pathways and quantum interference in enhanced ionisation of diatomic molecules in strong laser fields using machine learning techniques. Quantum interference provides a bridge, which facilitates intramolecular population transfer. Its frequency is higher than that of the field, intrinsic to the system and depends on several factors, for instance the state of the initial wavepacket or the internuclear separation. Using dimensionality reduction techniques, namely t-distributed stochastic neighbour embedding (t-SNE) and principal component analysis (PCA), we investigate the…
The dissociative ionization of H2+ interacting with intense, femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet laser pulses is investigated theoretically. This is done by numerical propagation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a colinear one-dimensional model of H2+, with electronic and nuclear motion treated exactly within the limitations of the model. The joint-energy spectra (JES) are extracted for the fragmented electron and nuclei by means of the t-SURFF method. The dynamic interference effect, which was first observed in one-electron atomic systems, is in the present work observed for H2+, em…
If matter absorbs a photon of sufficient energy it emits an electron. The question of the duration of the emission process has intrigued scientists for decades. With the advent of attosecond metrology, experiments addressing such ultrashort intervals became possible. While these types of studies require attosecond experimental precision, we present here a novel measurement approach that avoids those experimental difficulties. We instead extract the emission delay from the interference pattern generated as the emitted photoelectron is diffracted by the parent ion's potential. Targeting core ele…
A new pathway of strong laser field induced ionization of an atom is identified which is based on recollisions under the tunneling barrier. With an amended strong field approximation, the interference of the direct and the under-the-barrier recolliding quantum orbits are shown to induce a measurable shift of the peak of the photoelectron momentum distribution. The scaling of the momentum shift is derived relating the momentum shift to the tunneling delay time according to the Wigner concept. This allows to extend the Wigner concept for the quasistatic tunneling time delay into the nonadiabatic…
We report two schemes to generate perfect anisotropy in the photoelectron angular distribution of a randomly oriented ensemble of polyatomic molecules. In order to exert full control over the anisotropy of photoelectron emission, we exploit interferences between single-photon pathways and a manifold of resonantly-enhanced two-photon pathways. These are shown to outperform non-sequential $(ω,2ω)$ bichromatic phase control for the example of CHFClBr molecules. We are able to optimize pulses that yield anisotropic photoelectron emission thanks to a very efficient calculation of photoelectron mome…
We investigate the angle-resolved photoelectron spectra from laser-assisted photoionization for helium and neon atoms using an \textit{ab initio} method based on time-dependent surface flux and configuration interaction singles. We find that the shape of the distributions can be interpreted using a propensity rule, an intrinsic difference in the absorption and emission processes, as well as interference effects between multiple paths to the final angular momentum state. In neon we find that the difference between absorption and emission is hidden in the first sideband due to the multiple compe…
Angular distribution of photoelectrons released by the ionization of randomly-oriented molecules with two laser fields of carrier frequencies $ω$ and $2ω$, which are linearly polarized in two mutually-orthogonal directions, is analyzed in the perturbation limit for the case of one- vs two-photon ionization process. In particular, we focus on the recently predicted [Ph.V. Demekhin {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{121}, 253201 (2018)] forward-backward asymmetry in the photoelectron emission, which is induced by the interference of two fields and depends on the external relative phase betwe…
Photoelectron interferograms, manifested in photoelectron angular distributions (PADs), are a high-information, coherent observable. In order to obtain the maximum information from angle-resolved photoionization experiments it is desirable to record the full, 3D, photoelectron momentum distribution. Here we apply tomographic reconstruction techniques to obtain such 3D distributions from multiphoton ionization of potassium atoms, and fully analyse the energy and angular content of the 3D data. The PADs obtained as a function of energy indicate good agreement with previous 2D data and detailed a…
We analyze the two-dimensional photoelectrons momentum distribution of Ar atom ionized by midinfrared laser pulses and mainly concentrate on the energy range below 2Up. By using a generalized quantum trajectory Monte Carlo (GQTMC) simulation and comparing with the numerical solution of time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE), we show that in the deep tunneling regime, the rescattered electron trajectories plays unimportant role and the interplay between the intracycle and inter-cycle results in a ring-like interference pattern. The ring-like interference pattern will mask the holographic in…
We present a semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization that accounts for path interferences of tunnel-ionized electrons in the ionic potential beyond perturbation theory. Within the framework of a classical trajectory Monte-Carlo representation of the phase-space dynamics, the model employs the semiclassical approximation to the phase of the full quantum propagator in the exit channel. By comparison with the exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for strong-field ionization of hydrogen, we show that for suitable choices of the momentum distribution a…
Ionization of atoms by linearly polarized strong laser fields produces cylindrically symmetric photoelectron momentum distributions that exhibit modulations due to the interference of outgoing electron trajectories. For a faithful modeling, it is essential to include previously overlooked phase jumps occurring when trajectories pass through focal points. Such phase jumps are known as Gouy's phase anomaly in optics or as Maslov phases in semiclassical theory. Most importantly, because of Coulomb focusing in three dimensions, one out of two trajectories in photoelectron holography goes through a…
In strong-field ionization interferences between electron trajectories create a variety of interference structures in the final momentum distributions. Among them, the interferences between electron pathways that are driven directly to the detector and the ones that rescatter significantly with the parent ion lead to holography-type interference patterns that received great attention in recent years. In this work, we study the influence of the magnetic field component onto the holographic interference pattern, an effect beyond the electric dipole approximation, in experiment and theory. The ex…
We study single-photon ionization of aligned H$_2^+$ in a high-frequency low-intensity laser field. We focus on the case where the laser frequency is not far larger than the ionization potential of the target. The calculated photoelectron momentum distribution through numerical solution of time-dependent Schrödinger equation shows clear interference patterns. By developing a theory model applicable for high-frequency laser field, we show that the interference patterns can not be explained by the interference of the electronic wave with the observed momentum between these two atomic centers of …
The single ionization of noble gas atoms by the combined action of XUV attopulses and an infrared laser field is theoretically investigated by means of a non-perturbative model that under certain approximations gives closed-form expressions for the angular distributions of photoelectrons. Interestingly, our model allow us to interpret the angular distributions as two-center interferences where the separation between the centers is governed by the infrared laser field. Angular distributions are compared to the available experimental data showing a good agreement. Finally, we deduce the conditio…
During the ionization of atoms irradiated by linearly polarized intense laser fields, we find for the first time that the transverse momentum distribution of photoelectrons can be well fitted by a squared zeroth-order Bessel function because of the quantum interference effect of Glory rescattering. The characteristic of the Bessel function is determined by the common angular momentum of a bunch of semiclassical paths termed as Glory trajectories, which are launched with different nonzero initial transverse momenta distributed on a specific circle in the momentum plane and finally deflected to …
We study ionization dynamics of aligned diatomic molecules N$_2$ in strong elliptical laser fields experimentally and theoretically. The alignment dependence of photoelectron momentum distributions (PMDs) of N$_2$ measured in experiments is highlighted with comparing to Ar measured synchronously. Our results show that the PMDs of N$_2$ depend strongly on the alignment of the molecule, relative to the main axis of the laser ellipse. In particular, the most-probable electron-emission angle which is often used in attosecond measurement, differs remarkably when changing the molecular alignment. We…
We study ultrafast ionization dynamics using orthogonally polarized two-color (OTC) laser pulses involving the resonant "first plus second" ($ω+2ω$) scheme. The scheme is illustrated by numerical simulations of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and recording the photoelectron momentum distribution. On the basis of the simulations of this resonant ionization, we identify signatures of the dynamic Autler-Townes effect and dynamic interference, in which their characterization is not possible in spectral domain. Taking advantage of the OTC scheme we show that these dynamical effects, which o…
We investigate the carrier-envelope phase and intensity dependence of the longitudinal momentum distribution of photoelectrons resulting from above-threshold ionization of argon by few-cycle laser pulses. The intensity of the pulses with a center wavelength of 750\,nm is varied in a range between $0.7 \times 10^{14}$ and $\unit[5.5 \times 10^{14}]{W/cm^2}$. Our measurements reveal a prominent maximum in the carrier-envelope phase-dependent asymmetry at photoelectron energies of 2\,$U_\mathrm{P}$ ($U_\mathrm{P}$ being the ponderomotive potential), that is persistent over the entire intensity ra…
We extend the semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization that describes quantum interference and accounts for the Coulomb potential beyond the semiclassical perturbation theory to the hydrogen molecule. In the simplest case of the molecule oriented along the polarization direction of a linearly polarized laser field, we predict significant deviations of the two-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions and the energy spectra from the case of atomic hydrogen. Specifically, for the hydrogen molecule the electron energy spectrum falls off slower with increasing energy, and th…
Multiphoton detachment of F$^-$ by strong few-cycle laser pulses was studied by Shearer and Monteith using a Keldysh-type approach [Phys. Rev. A 88, 033415 (2013)]. We believe that this work contained errors in the calculation of the detachment amplitude and photoelectron spectra. We describe the necessary corrections to the theory and show that the results, in particular, the interference features of the photoelectron spectra, appear noticeably different.
