The statistical mechanics characterization of a finite subsystem embedded in an infinite system is a fundamental question of quantum physics. Nevertheless, a full closed form { for all required entropic measures} does not exist in the general case even for free systems when the finite system in question is composed of several disjoint intervals. Here we develop a mathematical framework based on the Riemann-Hilbert approach to treat this problem in the one-dimensional case where the finite system is composed of two disjoint intervals and in the thermodynamic limit (both intervals and the space between them contains an infinite number of lattice sites and the result is given as a thermodynamic expansion). To demonstrate the usefulness of our method, we compute the change in the entanglement and negativity namely the spectrum of eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix with our without time reversal of one of the intervals. We do this in the case that the distance between the intervals is much larger than their size. The method we use can be easily applied to compute any power in an expansion in the ratio of the distance between the intervals to their size. {We expect these results to provide the necessary mathematical apparatus to address relevant questions in concrete physical scenarios, namely the structure and extent of quantum correlations in fermionic systems subject to local environment.
A method is developed for realizing entanglement and general second quantized fermionic and bosonic fields in the framework of the fermionic projector.
A definition of detailed balance tailored to a system of indistinguishable fermions is suggested and studied using an entangled fermionic state. This is done in analogy to a known characterization of standard quantum detailed balance with respect to a reversing operation.
We analyze fermionic modes as fundamental entities for quantum information processing. To this end we construct a density operator formalism on the underlying Fock space and demonstrate how it can be naturally and unambiguously equipped with a notion of subsystems in the absence of a global tensor product structure. We argue that any apparent similarities between fermionic modes and qubits are superficial and can only be applied in limited situations. In particular, we discuss the ambiguities that arise from different treatments of this subject. Our results are independent of the specific cont…
In this paper we propose an expression for the entanglement entropy of several intervals in a stationary state of a free, translational invariant Hamiltonian in a fermionic chain. We check numerically the accuracy of our proposal and conjecture a new formula for the asymptotic behaviour of principal sub-matrices of a Toeplitz matrix.
We study the Renyi entanglement entropy of an interval in a periodic fermionic chain for a general eigenstate of a free, translational invariant Hamiltonian. In order to analytically compute the entropy we use two technical tools. The first one is used to reduce logarithmically the complexity of the problem and the second one to compute the Rényi entropy of the chosen subsystem. We introduce new strategies to perform the computations, derive new expressions for the entropy of these general states and show the perfect agreement of the analytical computations and the numerical outcome. Finally w…
We obtain a formula for the determinant of a block Toeplitz matrix associated with a quadratic fermionic chain with complex coupling. Such couplings break reflection symmetry and/or charge conjugation symmetry. We then apply this formula to compute the Renyi entropy of a partial observation to a subsystem consisting of $X$ contiguous sites in the limit of large $X$. The present work generalizes similar results due to Its, Jin, Korepin and Its, Mezzadri, Mo. A striking new feature of our formula for the entanglement entropy is the appearance of a term scaling with the logarithm of the size of $…
An elementary formula for the von Neumann and Renyi entropies describing quantum correlations in two-fermionic systems having four single particle states is presented. An interesting geometric structure of fermionic entanglement is revealed. A connection with the generalized Pauli principle is established.
There is an intimate relation between entanglement entropy and Riemann surfaces. This fact is explicitly noticed for the case of quadratic fermionic Hamiltonians with finite range couplings. After recollecting this fact, we make a comprehensive analysis of the action of the Möbius transformations on the Riemann surface. We are then able to uncover the origin of some symmetries and dualities of the entanglement entropy already noticed recently in the literature. These results give further support for the use of entanglement entropy to analyse phase transition.
We introduce the bosonic and fermionic ensembles of density matrices and study their entanglement. In the fermionic case, we show that random bipartite fermionic density matrices have non-positive partial transposition, hence they are typically entangled. The similar analysis in the bosonic case is more delicate, due to a large positive outlier eigenvalue. We compute the asymptotic ratio between the size of the environment and the size of the system Hilbert space for which random bipartite bosonic density matrices fail the PPT criterion, being thus entangled. We also relate moment computations…
We examine the fermionic entanglement in the ground state of the fermionic Lipkin model and its relation with bipartite entanglement. It is first shown that the one-body entanglement entropy, which quantifies the minimum distance to a fermionic Gaussian state, behaves similarly to the mean-field order parameter and is essentially proportional to the total bipartite entanglement between the upper and lower modes, a quantity meaningful only in the fermionic realization of the model. We also analyze the entanglement of the reduced state of four single-particle modes (two up-down pairs), showing t…
We propose a generalization of the usual SLOCC and LU classification of entangled pure state fermionic systems based on the Spin group. Our generalization uses the fact that there is a representation of this group acting on the fermionic Fock space which when restricted to fixed particle number subspaces recovers naturally the usual SLOCC transformations. The new ingredient is the occurrence of Bogoliubov transformations of the whole Fock space changing the particle number. The classification scheme built on the Spin group prohibits naturally entanglement between states containing even and odd…
In this work we have revisited a few principal formulae about one-tangle of multipartite entanglement of fermionic systems in noninertial frames calculated in the paper [Phys. Rev. A 83, 022314(2011)] and given their correct expressions.
In this paper, we discuss the possibility of unexplored behaviours for the entanglement entropy in extended quantum systems. Namely, we study the Rényi entanglement entropy for the ground state of long-range Kitaev chains with slow decaying couplings. We obtain that, under some circumstances, the entropy grows sublogarithmically with the length of the subsystem. Our result is based on the asymptotic behaviour of a new class of Toeplitz determinants whose symbol does not lie within the application domain of the Strong Szegő Theorem or the Fisher-Hartwig conjecture.
In this article we investigate the entanglement behavior of quantum states of fermionic system in accelerated frame. It was known that unlike scalar case the entanglement of fermionic maximally entangled states survives even in the infinite acceleration limit. Also for the fermionic system it was discussed that one may consider the approach beyond single mode approximation. However due to the peculiar property of fermionic system there has been different opinions about correct physical structure of fermionic system. Recently Montero and Martín-Martínez suggested an approach beyond single mode …
After a brief introduction to the fermionic projector approach, we review how entanglement and second quantized bosonic and fermionic fields can be described in this framework. The constructions are discussed with regard to decoherence phenomena and the measurement problem. We propose a mechanism leading to the collapse of the wave function in the quantum mechanical measurement process.
This is a thesis submitted to university of Pune, India, for the Ph.D. degree. This work deals with entanglement production in two qubit, two qutrit and three qubit systems, entanglement in indistinguishable fermionic systems, quantum discord in a Heisenberg chain and geometric measure of quantum discord in an arbitrary state of a bipartite quantum system.
We study pairwise quantum entanglement in systems of fermions itinerant in a lattice from a second-quantized perspective. Entanglement in the grand-canonical ensemble is studied, both for energy eigenstates and for the thermal state. Relations between entanglement and superconducting correlations are discussed in a BCS-like model and for $η$-pair superconductivity.
A maximal steady-state fermionic entanglement of a nanoelectronic system is generated in finite temperature non-Markovian environments. The fermionic entanglement dynamics is presented by connecting the exact solution of the system with an appropriate definition of fermionic entanglement. We prove that the two understandings of the dissipationless non-Markovian dynamics, namely the bound state and the modified Laplace transformation are completely equivalent. For comparison, the steady-state entanglement is also studied in the wide-band limit and Born-Markovian approximation. When the environm…
We analyse an ambiguity in previous works on entanglement of fermionic fields in non-inertial frames. This ambiguity, related to the anticommutation properties of field operators, leads to non-unique results when computing entanglement measures for the same state. We show that the ambiguity disappears when we introduce detectors, which are in any case necessary as a means to probe the field entanglement.
Unlike bosons, fermions always have a non-trivial entanglement. Intuitively, Slater determinantal states should be the least entangled states. To make this intuition precise we investigate entropy and entanglement of fermionic states and prove some extremal and near extremal properties of reduced density matrices of Slater determinantal states.
In this paper we investigate the entanglement of multi-qubit fermionic coherent states described by anticommutative Grassmann numbers. Choosing an appropriate weight function, we show that it is possible to construct some entangled pure states, consisting of {\bf{GHZ}}, {\bf{W}}, Bell and biseparable states, by tensor product of fermion coherent states. Moreover a comparison with maximal entangled bosonic coherent states is presented and it is shown that in some cases they have fermionic counterpart which are maximal entangled after integration with suitable weight functions.
We provide a simple argument showing that, in the limit of infinite acceleration, the entanglement in a fermionic field bipartite system must be independent of the choice of Unruh modes. This implies that most tensor product structures used previously to compute field entanglement in relativistic quantum information cannot give rise to physical results.
In this article we present an analysis to derive physical results in the entanglement amplification of fermonic systems in the relativistic regime, that is, beyond the single-mode approximation. This leads a recent work in [M. Montero and E. Martín-Martínez, JEHP 07 (2011) 006] to a physical result, and solidifies that phenomenon of entanglement amplification can actually happen in the relativistic regime.
We introduce geometric measures of entanglement for indistinguishable particles, which apply to mixed states, multipartite systems, and arbitrary dimensions. They are based on generalized (i.e., not necessarily finite) norms on the set of quantum states and lead to the first necessary and sufficient computational separability criterion in this general setting. The coherent approach developed in the paper allows us to compare, in particular, entanglement for fermionic and distinguishable particles: The entanglement measure for fermionic particles coincides with the corresponding entanglement me…
We present a novel scheme to engineer the entanglement in a fermionic system, which is modeled by a minimally three-site Hubbard model. It is found that, in this type of system, we can have two free parameters. One is used to tune the entanglement and the other to switch on or off the above tuning function. The whole process is much like what happens in a traditional transistor switch, where the main current between the emitter and collector can be turned on or off by the base current.
The anticommuting properties of fermionic operators, together with the presence of parity conservation, affect the concept of entanglement in a composite fermionic system. Hence different points of view can give rise to different reasonable definitions of separable and entangled states. Here we analyze these possibilities and the relationship between the different classes of separable states. We illustrate the differences by providing a complete characterization of all the sets defined for systems of two fermionic modes. The results are applied to Gibbs states of infinite chains of fermions wh…
The Fock space of a system of indistinguishable particles is isomorphic (in a non-unique way) to the state-space of a composite i.e., many-modes, quantum system. One can then discuss quantum entanglement for fermionic as well as bosonic systems. We exemplify the use of this notion -central in quantum information - by studying some e.g., Hubbard, lattice fermionic models relevant to condensed matter physics.
We study the effects of acceleration on fermionic Gaussian states of localized modes of a Dirac field. We consider two wave-packets in a Gaussian state and transform these to an accelerated frame of reference. In particular, we formulate the action of this transformation as a fermionic quantum channel. Having developed the general framework for fermions, we then investigate the entanglement of the vacuum, as well as the entanglement in Bell states. We find that with increasing acceleration vacuum entanglement increases, while the entanglement of Bell states decreases. Notably, our results have…
The dynamics of tripartite entanglement of fermionic system in noninertial frames through linear contraction criterion when one or two observers are accelerated is investigated. In one observer accelerated case the entanglement measurement is not invariant with respect to the partial realignment of different subsystems and for two observers accelerated case it is invariant. It is shown that the acceleration of the frame does not generate entanglement in any bipartite subsystems. Unlike the bipartite states, the genuine tripartite entanglement does not completely vanish in both one observer acc…
We analyze the dynamics of entanglement due to decoherence in a system of two identical fermions with spin $3/2$ interacting with a global bosonic environment. We resort to an appropriate measure of the so-called fermionic entanglement to quantify the fermionic correlations, and compare its dynamics with that of a pair of distinguishable qubits immersed in the same environment. According to the system's initial state, three types of qualitatively different dynamics are identified: i) \textit{invariant regime}, corresponding to initial states that belong to a decoherence free subspace (DFS), wh…
We show that the computational model based on local Fermionic modes in place of qubits does not satisfy local tomography and monogamy of entanglement, and has mixed states with maximal entanglement of formation. These features directly follow from the parity conservation corresponding to the parity superselection rule. We generalize quantum superselection rules to general probabilistic theories as sets of linear constraints on the convex set of states. We then provide a link between the cardinality of the superselection rule and the degree of holism of the resulting theory.
Entanglement entropy may display a striking new symmetry under Möbius transformations. This symmetry was analysed in our previous work for the case of a non-critical (gapped) free homogeneous fermionic chain invariant under parity and charge conjugation. In the present work we extend and analyse this new symmetry in several directions. First, we show that the above mentioned symmetry also holds when parity and charge conjugation invariance are broken. Second we extend this new symmetry to the case of critical (gapless) theories. Our results are further supported by numerical analysis. For some…
We study multipartite entanglement in a system consisting of indistinguishable fermions. Specifically, we have proposed a geometric entanglement measure for N spin-1/2 fermions distributed over 2L modes (single particle states). The measure is defined on the 2L qubit space isomorphic to the Fock space for 2L single particle states. This entanglement measure is defined for a given partition of 2L modes containing m >= 2 subsets. Thus this measure applies to m <= 2L partite fermionic system where L is any finite number, giving the number of sites. The Hilbert spaces associated with these subsets…
We introduce an arbitrary number of accessible modes when analyzing bipartite entanglement degradation due to Unruh effect between two partners Alice and Rob. Under the single mode approximation (SMA) a fermion field only had a few accessible levels due to Pauli exclusion principle, conversely to bosonic fields which had an infinite number of excitable levels. This was argued to justify entanglement survival in the fermionic case in the SMA infinite acceleration limit. Here we relax SMA. Hence, an infinite number of modes are excited as the observer Rob accelerates, even for a fermion field. W…
In this comment we show that the ambiguity of entropic quantities calculated in Physical Review A 83, 062323 (2011) for fermionic fields in the context of Unruh effect is not related to the properties of anticommuting fields, as claimed in Physical Review A 83, 062323 (2011), but rather to wrong mathematical manipulations with them and not taking into account a fundamental superselection rule of quantum field theory.
In this paper we study the time evolution of (Renyi) entanglement entropies for locally excited states in four dimensional free massless fermionic field theory. Locally excited states are defined by being acted by various local operators on the ground state. Their excesses are defined by subtracting (Renyi) entanglement entropy for the ground state from those for locally excited states. They finally approach some constant if the subsystem is given by half of the total space. They have spin dependence. They can be interpreted in terms of quasi-particles.
In this paper the entanglement of multi-qubit fermionic pseudo Hermitian coherent states (FPHCS) described by anticommutative Grassmann numbers is studied. The pseudo-Hermitian versions of the well known maximally entangled pure states such as Bell and GHZ, W and biseparable states are introduced through integrating over the tensor products of FPHCSs with suitable choice of Grassmannian weight functions. Meanwhile as an illustration, the method is applied to tensor product of 2 and 3 qubit pseudo Hermitian systems. Then the measures of concurrence and average entropy are applied to quantify th…
We investigate quantum entanglement between two (spin-1/2) fermions inside a cylindrical harmonic trap, making use of the von Neumann entropy for the reduced single particle density matrix as the pure state entanglement measure. We explore the dependence of pair entanglement on the geometry and strength of the trap and on the strength of the pairing interaction over the complete range of the effective BCS to BEC crossover. Our result elucidates an interesting connection between our model system of two fermions and that of two interacting bosons.
We study families of fermionic field states in non-inertial frames which show no entanglement survival in the infinite acceleration limit. We generalise some recent results where some particular examples of such states where found. We analyse the abundance and characteristics of the states showing this behaviour and discuss its relation with the statistics of the field. We also consider the phenomenon beyond the single mode approximation.
The present paper is both a review on the Feynman problem, and an original research presentation on the relations between Fermionic theories and qubits theories, both regarded in the novel framework of operational probabilistic theories. The most relevant results about the Feynman problem of simulating Fermions with qubits are reviewed, and in the light of the new original results the problem is solved. The answer is twofold. On the computational side the two theories are equivalent, as shown by Bravyi and Kitaev (Ann. Phys. 298.1 (2002): 210-226). On the operational side the quantum theory of…
We study the steady state entanglement and correlations of an open system comprised of two coupled fermions in the equilibrium or nonequilibrium environments and distill the nonequilibrium contribution to the quantum correlations. We show that in the equilibrium condition, the steady-state quantum correlations exhibit non-monotonic behavior, while in the nonequilibrium case, the monotonicity is determined by many parameters. The entanglement vanishes abruptly upon the increase of the temperature (bias) and chemical potential bias, it witnesses a critical chemical potential above which the conc…
Recent advances in the field of strongly correlated electron systems allow to access the entanglement properties of interacting fermionic models, by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We briefly review the techniques used in this context to determine the entanglement entropies and correlations of the entanglement Hamiltonian. We further apply these methods to compute the spin two-point function of entanglement Hamiltonian for a stripe embedded into a correlated topological insulator. Further we discuss a recent method that allows an unbiased, numerically exact, direct determination of the entan…
Entanglement plays a central role in numerous fields of quantum science. However, as one departs from the typical "Alice versus Bob" setting into the world of indistinguishable fermions, it is not immediately clear how the concept of entanglement is defined among these identical particles. Our endeavor to recover the notion of subsystems, or mathematically speaking, the tensor product structure of the Hilbert space, lead to two natural pictures of defining fermionic entanglement: the particle picture and the mode picture. In the particle picture, entanglement characterizes the deviation of a f…
We demonstrate, in the context of quadratic fermion lattice models in one and two spatial dimensions, the potential of entanglement renormalization (ER) to define a proper real-space renormalization group transformation. Our results show, for the first time, the validity of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) to describe ground states in two dimensions, even at a quantum critical point. They also unveil a connection between the performance of ER and the logarithmic violations of the boundary law for entanglement in systems with a one-dimensional Fermi surface. ER is reca…
We show how to achieve perfect quantum state transfer and construct effective two-qubit gates between distant sites in engineered bosonic and fermionic networks. The Hamiltonian for the system can be determined by choosing an eigenvalue spectrum satisfying a certain condition, which is shown to be both sufficient and necessary in mirror-symmetrical networks. The natures of the effective two-qubit gates depend on the exchange symmetry for fermions and bosons. For fermionic networks, the gates are entangling (and thus universal for quantum computation). For bosonic networks, though the gates are…
Recent numerical advances in the field of strongly correlated electron systems allow the calculation of the entanglement spectrum and entropies for interacting fermionic systems. An explicit determination of the entanglement (modular) Hamiltonian has proven to be a considerably more difficult problem, and only a few results are available. We introduce a technique to directly determine the entanglement Hamiltonian of interacting fermionic models by means of auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We implement our method on the one-dimensional Hubbard chain partitioned into two segments…
We analyse in detail the effect of non-trivial band topology on the area law behaviour of the entanglement entropy in Kitaev's honeycomb model. By mapping the translationally invariant 2D spin model into 1D fermionic subsystems, we identify those subsystems responsible for universal entanglement contributions in the gapped phases and those responsible for critical entanglement scaling in the gapless phases. For the gapped phases we analytically show how the topological edge states contribute to the entanglement entropy and provide a universal lower bound for it. For the gapless semi-metallic p…
