We study the spin-one Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice in the presence of single-ion anisotropies. We consider two types of single ion anisotropies: A $D_{111}$ anisotropy which preserves the symmetry between $X$, $Y$, and $Z$ bonds but violates flux conservation and a $D_{100}$ anisotropy that breaks the symmetry between $X$, $Y$, and $Z$ bonds but preserves flux conservation. We use series expansion methods, degenerate perturbation theory, and exact diagonalization to study these systems. Large positive $D_{111}$ anisotropy leads to a simple product ground state with conventional magnon-like excitations, while large negative $D_{111}$ leads to a broken symmetry and degenerate ground states. For both signs there is a phase transition at a small $|D_{111}| \approx 0.12$ separating the more conventional phases from the Kitaev spin liquid phase. With large $D_{100}$ anisotropy, the ground state is a simple product state, but the model lacks conventional dispersive excitations due to the large number of conservation laws. Large negative $D_{100}$ leads to decoupled one-dimensional systems and many degenerate ground states. No evidence of a phase transition is seen in our numerical studies at any finite $D_{100}$. Convergence of the series expansion extrapolations all the way to $D_{100}=0$ suggests that the nontrivial Kitaev spin liquid is a singular limit of this type of single-ion anisotropy going to zero, which also restores symmetry between the $X$, $Y$, and $Z$ bonds.
We introduce a spinful variant of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with an effective time reversal symmetry, which can be solved exactly in the limit of a large number $N$ of degrees of freedom. At low temperature, its phase diagram includes a compressible non-Fermi liquid and a strongly-correlated spin singlet superconductor that shows a tunable enhancement of the gap ratio predicted by BCS theory. These two phases are separated by a first-order transition, in the vicinity of which a gapless superconducting phase, characterized by a non-zero magnetization, is stabilized upon applying a Zeeman fiel…
We study a quantum spin Kitaev model with zigzag edges to clarify the effects of anisotropy in the exchange couplings on the spin propagation. We simulate the spin and Majorana dynamics triggered by a magnetic pulse, using the real-space time-dependent Majorana mean-field theory. When the anisotropy is small, the dispersion of the itinerant Majorana fermions remains gapless, where the velocity of the spin propagation matches the group velocity of the itinerant Majorana fermions at the nodal points. On the other hand, in the gapped system with a large anisotropy, the spin propagation is strongl…

The quest for Kitaev quantum spin liquids has led to great interest in honeycomb quantum magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling. It has been recently proposed that even Mott insulators with $3d$ transition metal ions, having nominally weak spin-orbit coupling, can realize such exotic physics. Motivated by this, we study the rhombohedral honeycomb cobaltates CoTiO$_3$, BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$, and BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, using $\textit{ab initio}$ density functional theory, which takes into account realistic crystal field distortions and chemical information, in conjunction with exact diagonalizat…

Leveraging coherent light-matter interaction in solids is a promising new direction towards control and functionalization of quantum materials, to potentially realize regimes inaccessible in equilibrium and stabilize new or useful states of matter. We show how driving the strongly spin-orbit coupled proximal Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ with circularly-polarized light can give rise to a novel ligand-mediated magneto-electric effect that both photo-induces a large dynamical effective magnetic field and dramatically alters the interplay of competing isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions.…

We report magnetometry data obtained on twin-free single crystals of Na3Co2SbO6, which is considered a candidate material for realizing the Kitaev honeycomb model for quantum spin liquids. Contrary to a common belief that such materials can be modeled with the symmetries of an ideal honeycomb lattice, our data reveal a pronounced two-fold symmetry and in-plane anisotropy of over 200%, despite the honeycomb layer's tiny orthorhombic distortion of less than 0.2%. We further use magnetic neutron diffraction to elucidate a rich variety of field-induced phases observed in the magnetometry. These ph…
The interplay of non-Fermi liquid and superconductivity born out of strong dynamical interactions is at the heart of the physics of unconventional superconductivity. As a solvable platform of the strongly correlated superconductors, we study the pairing instabilities of the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (Yukawa-SYK) model, which describes spin-1/2 fermions coupled to bosons by the random, all-to-all, spin-independent and dependent Yukawa interactions. In contrast to the previously studied models, the random Yukawa couplings are sampled from a collection of Gaussian ensembles whose variances follow …
We present an extensive overview of the phase diagram, spin-wave excitations, and finite-temperature transitions of the anisotropic-exchange magnets on an ideal nearest-neighbor triangular lattice. We investigate transitions between five principal classical phases of the corresponding model: ferromagnetic, Néel, its dual, and the two stripe phases. Transitions are identified by the spin-wave instabilities and by the Luttinger-Tisza approach. Some of the transitions are direct and others occur via intermediate phases with more complicated forms of ordering. In a portion of the Néel phase, we fi…
Na2Co2TeO6 is a proposed approximate Kitaev magnet, yet its actual magnetic interactions are elusive due to a lack of knowledge on the full excitation spectrum. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering and single crystals, we determine the system's temperature-dependent magnetic excitations over the entire Brillouin zone. Without committing to specific models, we unveil a distinct signature of the third-nearest-neighbor coupling in the spin waves, which signifies the associated distance as an emerging "soft link" in the ordered state. The presence of at least six non-overlapping spin-wave bran…
The competition between fractionalized spin-liquid states and magnetically ordered phases is an important paradigm in frustrated magnetism. Spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators with Ising-like magnetic anisotropies, such as Kitaev materials, are a particularly rich playground to explore this competition. In this work, we use effective field theory methods to show that a direct quantum phase transition can occur in two-dimensional (2D) Ising spin systems between a topologically ordered chiral spin liquid and a phase with magnetic long-range order. Such a transition can be protected by lattice sym…
