Recently, the nature of viscoelastic drag-reducing turbulence (DRT), especially maximum drag reduction (MDR) state, has become a focus of controversy. It has long been regarded as polymers-modulated inertial turbulence (IT), but is challenged by the newly proposed concept of elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT). This study is to re-picture DRT in parallel plane channels by introducing dynamics of EIT based on statistical and budget analysis for a series of flow regimes from the onset of DR to EIT. Energy conversion between velocity fluctuations and polymers as well as polymeric pressure redistribution effect are of particular concern, based on which a new energy self-sustaining process (SSP) of DRT is re-pictured. The numerical results indicate that at low Reynolds number (Re), the flow enters laminar regime before EIT-related SSP is formed with the increase of elasticity, whereas, at moderate Re, EIT-related SSP can get involved and survive from being relaminarized. This somehow explains the reason why relaminarization is observed for small Re while the flow directly enters MDR and EIT at moderate Re. Moreover, with the proposed energy picture, the newly discovered phenomenon that the streamwise velocity fluctuations lag behind those in wall-normal direction can be well explained. The re-pictured SSP certainly justify that IT nature is gradually replaced by that of EIT in DRT with the increase of elasticity.
We show that viscoelastic plane Poiseuille flow becomes linearly unstable in the absence of inertia, in the limit of high elasticities, for ultra-dilute polymer solutions. While inertialess elastic instabilities have been predicted for curvilinear shear flows, this is the first ever report of a purely elastic linear instability in a rectilinear shear flow. The novel instability continues upto a Reynolds number ($Re$) of $O(1000)$, corresponding to the recently identified elasto-inertial turbulent state believed to underlie the maximum-drag-reduced regime. Thus, for highly elastic ultra-dilute …
Viscoelastic microfluidic devices are promising for various microscale procedures such as particle sorting and separation. In this study, we perform three dimensional computational investigation of a particle in a viscoelastic channel flow by considering combined inertial and elastic effects. We calculate equilibrium positions of the particle in the microchannel for a wide range of Reynolds and Weissenberg numbers, which are important in the design of microfluidic devices. The results provide an insight into the motion of cells and particles and explain the findings of previous experiments. Fu…
Dynamic properties of elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT) are studied in a Taylor-Couette geometry. EIT is a chaotic flow state that develops upon both non-negligible inertia and viscoelasticity. A combination of direct flow visualisation and torque measurement allows to verify the earlier onset of EIT compared to purely inertial instabilities (and inertial turbulence). The scaling of the pseudo-Nusselt number with inertia and elasticity is discussed here for the first time. Variations in the friction coefficient, temporal frequency spectra, and spatial power density spectra highlight that EIT un…
In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical solver is developed for suspensions of rigid and soft particles and droplets in viscoelastic and elastoviscoplastic (EVP) fluids. The presented algorithm is designed to allow for the first time three-dimensional simulations of inertial and turbulent EVP fluids with a large number particles and droplets. This is achieved by combining fast and highly scalable methods such as an FFT-based pressure solver, with the evolution equation for non-Newtonian (including elastoviscoplastic) stresses. In this flexible computational framework, the fluid can be mod…
Elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT) is a new, two-dimensional chaotic flow state observed in polymer solutions with possible connections to inertialess elastic turbulence and drag-reduced Newtonian turbulence. In this Letter, we argue that the origins of EIT are fundamentally different from Newtonian turbulence by finding a dynamical connection between EIT and an elasto-inertial linear instability recently found at high Weissenberg numbers (Garg et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 024502, 2018). This link is established by isolating the first known exact coherent structures in viscoelastic parallel flow…
For decades, transition to turbulence in viscoelastic parallel shear flows was believed to require nonlinear instabilities. We provide numerical evidences for a new wall-mode linear instability that directly triggers the transition to elastoinertial turbulence in channel flow. The instability is 2D but 3D features become important as nonlinear effects grow. With larger disturbances, direct transition to nonlinear instabilities, leading to turbulent states of both inertial and elastoinertial natures, are observed.
Surface distortions to an otherwise planar channel flow introduce vorticity perturbations. We examine this scenario in viscoelastic fluids, and identify new mechanisms by which significant vorticity perturbations can be generated in both inertialess and elasto-inertial channel flows. We focus on the case where the lengthscale of the surface distortion is much longer than the channel depth, where we find significant departure from plane shear (Page & Zaki, J. Fluid Mech. 801 2016) due to the non-monotonic base-flow streamwise-normal elastic stress. In inertialess flows, a purely elastic respons…
Turbulence generally arises in shear flows if velocities and hence inertial forces are sufficiently large. In striking contrast, viscoelastic fluids can exhibit disordered motion even at vanishing inertia. Intermediate between these cases, a novel state of chaotic motion, `elasto-inertial turbulence' (EIT), has been observed in a narrow Reynolds number interval. We here determine the origin of EIT in experiments and show that characteristic EIT structures can be detected across an unexpectedly wide range of parameters. Close to onset a pattern of chevron shaped streaks emerges in excellent agr…
Numerical simulation of viscoelastic flows is challenging because of the hyperbolic nature of viscoelastic constitutive equations. Despite their superior accuracy and efficiency, pseudo-spectral methods require the introduction of artificial diffusion (AD) for numerical stability in hyperbolic problems, which alters the physical nature of the system. This study presents a hybrid numerical procedure that integrates an upwind total variation diminishing (TVD) finite-difference scheme, which is known for its stability in hyperbolic problems, for the polymer stress convection term into an overall …
The recently-discovered centre-mode instability of rectilinear viscoelastic shear flow (Garg et al. Phy. Rev. Lett. 121, 024502, 2018) has offered an explanation for the origin of elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT) which occurs at lower Weissenberg ($Wi$) numbers. In support of this, we show using weakly nonlinear analysis that the subcriticality found in Page et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 154501, 2020) is generic across the neutral curve with the instability only becoming supercritical at low Reynolds ($Re$) numbers and high $Wi$. We demonstrate that the instability can be viewed as purely elas…
The dynamics of a single elastoviscoplastic (EVP) drop immersed in plane shear flow of a Newtonian fluid is studied by 3D direct numerical simulations using a finite-difference and level-set method combined with the Saramito model for the EVP fluid. This model gives rise to a yield stress behavior, where the unyielded state of the material is described as a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic solid and the yielded state as a viscoelastic Oldroyd-B fluid. Yielding of an initially solid drop of Carbopol is simulated under successively increasing shear rates. We proceed to examine the roles of nondimension…
Direct simulations of two-dimensional channel flow of a viscoelastic fluid have revealed the existence of a family of Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) attractors that is nonlinearly self-sustained by viscoelasticity [Shekar et al., J.Fluid Mech. 893, A3 (2020)]. Here, we describe the evolution of this branch in parameter space and its connections to the Newtonian TS attractor and to elastoinertial turbulence (EIT). At Reynolds number $Re=3000$, there is a solution branch with TS-wave structure but which is not connected to the Newtonian solution branch. At fixed Weissenberg number, $Wi$ and increasin…
A modal stability analysis shows that pressure-driven pipe flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid is linearly unstable to axisymmetric perturbations, in stark contrast to its Newtonian counterpart which is linearly stable at all Reynolds numbers. The dimensionless groups that govern stability are the Reynolds number, the elasticity number, and the ratio of solvent to solution viscosity. The unstable mode has a phase speed close to the base-state maximum over the entire unstable region in the relevant parameter space, implying that the unstable mode belongs to a class of viscoelastic center modes. Unlike t…
For the clarification of the routes to elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT), it is essential to understand how viscoelasticity modulates coherent flow structures including the longitudinal vortices. We focused on a rotating plane Couette flow that provides two-dimensional (2D) roll cells for the steady laminar Newtonian-fluid case, and we investigated how the steady longitudinal vortices are modulated by viscoelasticity at different Weissenberg numbers. The viscoelasticity was found to induce an unsteady flow state where the 2D roll-cell structure was periodically enhanced and damped with a consta…
Axisymmetric viscoelastic pipe flow of Oldroyd-B fluids has been recently found to be linearly unstable by Garg et al. Phys. Rev. Lett., 121.024502 (2018). From a nonlinear point of view, this means that the flow can transition to turbulence supercritically, in contrast to the subcritical Newtonian pipe flows. Experimental evidences of subcritical and supercritical bifurcations of viscoelastic pipe flows have been reported, but these nonlinear phenomena have not been examined theoretically. In this work, we study the weakly nonlinear stability of this flow by performing a multiple-scale expans…
The elasto-inertial effects on particle focusing in a square-tube flow were investigated experimentally and numerically. Microscale experiments using spherical particles in dilute polymer solutions demonstrated that the particles are focused on the midline and/or the diagonal in a downstream cross-section, depending on the polymer concentration. Numerical computations based on the FENE-P model for the viscoelastic flow reproduced these focusing patterns. It was revealed that the transitions among the patterns are accounted for by the elastic forces due to the first normal stress difference and…
Viscoelastic flows occur widely, and numerical simulations of them are important for a range of industrial applications. Simulations of viscoelastic flows are more challenging than their Newtonian counterparts due to the presence of exponential gradients in polymeric stress fields, which can lead to catastrophic instabilities if not carefully handled. A key development to overcome this issue is the log-conformation formulation, which has been applied to a range of numerical methods, but not previously applied to Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). Here we present a 2D incompressible SPH alg…
We provide a detailed comparison of the two-dimensional, temporal and the spatiotemporal linearized analyses of the viscoelastic free shear flows in the limit of low to moderate Reynolds number and Elasticity number obeying four different types of stress-strain constitutive equations: Oldroyd-B, Upper Convected Maxwell, Johnson-Segalman (JS) and linear Phan-Thien Tanner (PTT). The resulting fourth-order Orr-Sommerfeld Equation is transformed into a set of six auxiliary equations that are numerically integrated via the Compound Matrix Method. The temporal stability analysis suggest (a) elastic …
Using branch continuation in the FENE-P model, we show that finite-amplitude travelling waves borne out of the recently-discovered linear instability of viscoelastic channel flow (Khalid et al. {\em J. Fluid Mech.} {\bf 915}, A43, 2021) are substantially subcritical reaching much lower Weissenberg ($Wi$) numbers than on the neutral curve at a given Reynolds ($Re$) number over $Re \in [0,3000]$. The travelling waves on the lower branch are surprisingly weak indicating that viscolastic channel flow is susceptible to (nonlinear) instability triggered by small finite amplitude disturbances for $Wi…
Polymer additives can substantially reduce the drag of turbulent flows and the upper limit, the so called "maximum drag reduction" (MDR) asymptote is universal, i.e. independent of the type of polymer and solvent used. Until recently, the consensus was that, in this limit, flows are in a marginal state where only a minimal level of turbulence activity persists. Observations in direct numerical simulations using minimal sized channels appeared to support this view and reported long "hibernation" periods where turbulence is marginalized. In simulations of pipe flow we find that, indeed, with inc…
Recent experiments have reported a novel transition to elasto-inertial turbulence in the Taylor--Couette flow of a dilute polymer solution. Unlike previously reported transitions, this newly discovered scenario, dubbed vortex merging and splitting (VMS) transition, occurs in the centrifugally unstable regime and the mechanisms underlying it are two-dimensional: the flow becomes chaotic due to the proliferation of events where axisymmetric vortex pairs may be either created (vortex splitting) or annihilated (vortex merging). In this paper, we present direct numerical simulations, using the FENE…
We propose in this work the first symmetric hyperbolic system of conservation laws to describe viscoelastic flows of Maxwell fluids, i.e. fluidswith memory that are characterized by one relaxation-time parameter. Precisely, the system of quasilinear PDEs is detailed for the shallow-water regime, i.e. for hydrostatic incompressible 2D flows with free surface under gravity. It generalizes Saint-Venant system to viscoelastic flows of Maxwell fluids, and encompasses previous works with F. Bouchut. It also generalizes the (thin-layer) elastodynamics of hyperelastic materials to viscous fluids, and …
Instabilities in free surface continuous jets of non-Newtonian fluids, although relevant for many industrial processes, remain less well understood in terms of fundamental fluid dynamics. Inviscid, and viscous Newtonian jets have been studied in great detail; buckling instability in viscous jets leads to regular periodic coiling of the jet that exhibits a non-trivial frequency dependence with the height of the fall. Very few experimental or theoretical studies exist for continuous viscoelastic jets beyond the onset of the first instability. Here, we present a systematic study of the effects of…
We report the temporal and spatio-temporal stability analyses of anti-symmetric, free shear, viscoelastic flows obeying the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation in the limit of low to moderate Reynolds number and Weissenberg number. The resulting fourth order Orr-Sommerfeld equation is reduced to a set of six auxiliary equations which are numerically integrated starting from the rescaled far-field conditions, i.~e., via the Compound Matrix Method. Numerical results indicate that with increasing Weissenberg number: (a) the peak of the maximal growth rate (i. e., the maximum value of the imaginary co…
