We provide a detailed comparison of the two-dimensional, temporal and the spatiotemporal linearized analyses of the viscoelastic free shear flows in the limit of low to moderate Reynolds number and Elasticity number obeying four different types of stress-strain constitutive equations: Oldroyd-B, Upper Convected Maxwell, Johnson-Segalman (JS) and linear Phan-Thien Tanner (PTT). The resulting fourth-order Orr-Sommerfeld Equation is transformed into a set of six auxiliary equations that are numerically integrated via the Compound Matrix Method. The temporal stability analysis suggest (a) elastic stabilization at higher values of elasticity number, (b) a non-monotonic instability pattern at low to intermediate values of elasticity number for the JS as well as the PTT model. To comprehend the effect of elasticity, Reynolds number and viscosity on the temporal stability curves of the PTT model, we consider a fourth parameter, the centerline shear rate, $ζ_c$. The `JS behaviour' is recovered below a critical value of $ζ_c$ and above this critical value the PTT base stresses (relative to the JS model) is attenuated thereby explaining the stabilizing influence of elasticity. The Briggs idea of analytic continuation is deployed to classify regions of temporal stability, absolute and convective instabilities, as well as evanescent modes, and the results are compared with previously conducted experiments for Newtonian as well as viscoelastic flows past a cylinder. The phase diagrams reveal the two familiar regions of inertial turbulence modified by elasticity and elastic turbulence as well as (a recently substantiated) region of elastoinertial turbulence and the unfamiliar temporally stable region for intermediate values of Reynolds and Elasticity number.
We revisit the problem of the two-dimensional spatiotemporal linear stability of viscoelastic slender jets obeying linear Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT) stress constitutive equation, and investigate the role of finite stresses on the elasto-capilliary stability of the Beads-on-a-String (BOAS) structure (structures which include the formation of very thin filament between drops) and identify the regions of topological transition of the advancing jet interface, in the limit of low to moderate Ohnesorge number ($Oh$) and high values of Weissenberg number ($We$). The Briggs idea of analytic continuation …
Starting from stationary bifurcations in Couette-Dean flow, we compute nontrivial stationary solutions in inertialess viscoelastic circular Couette flow. These solutions are strongly localized vortex pairs, exist at arbitrarily large wavelengths, and show hysteresis in the Weissenberg number, similar to experimentally observed ``diwhirl'' patterns. Based on the computed velocity and stress fields, we elucidate a heuristic, fully nonlinear mechanism for these flows. We propose that these localized, fully nonlinear structures comprise fundamental building blocks for complex spatiotemporal dynami…
We present an analytical study of oscillatory laminar shear flow over a compliant viscoelastic layer on a rigid base. This problem relates to oscillating blood flow in viscoelastic vessels. The deeper motivation for this study, however, is the possible use of compliant coatings for turbulent drag reduction. An analytical solution of the fluid and solid velocity is presented, and five dimensionless parameters emerge. The interaction between fluid and solid appears to be determined by a single combined dimensionless parameter, which we call the shear interaction parameter $χ$. The fluid satisfie…
An alternative step in understanding the flows of near wall drag-reducing turbulence can be examining the flow in a well-organized streamwise vortex with a laminar background. Herein, we studied the flow behaviors of the Giesekus viscoelastic fluid in a rotating plane Couette flow system, which is accompanied by steady roll cell structures. By fixing the Reynolds and rotation numbers at values that provide as steady wavy roll cell, i.e., an array of meandering streamwise vortices, the Weissenberg number was increased up to 2000 (where the relaxation time was normalized by the wall speed and th…
The temporal and spatiotemporal linear stability analyses of viscoelastic, subdiffusive, plane Poiseuille and Couette flows obeying the Fractional Upper Convected Maxwell (FUCM) equation in the limit of low to moderate Reynolds number ($Re$) and Weissenberg number ($We$), is reported to identify the regions of topological transition of the advancing flow interface. In particular, we demonstrate how the exponent in the subdiffusive power{\color{black}-}law scaling ($t^α$, with $0 {\color{black} < } α\le 1$) of the mean square displacement of the tracer particle, in the microscale [Mason and Wei…
In this study, we report the use of digital holography microscopy (DHM) for 3D-resolved flow kinematics and shear rheometry of viscoelastic polymeric fluids. We computationally reconstruct the recorded holograms to visualize the tracer imbued flow volume in microchannels, followed by implementation of particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) to quantitate spatially-resolved velocity fields in 3D. In order to select optimal parameters for DHM-PTV characterization of complex fluids, we studied the effect of hologram recording distance, seeding density and particle size. Using the optimal parameters, …
We report the experimental study of the degassing dynamics through a thin layer of shear-thinning viscoelastic fluid (CTAB/NaSal solution), when a constant air flow is imposed at its bottom. Over a large range of parameters, the air is periodically released through series of successive bubbles, hereafter named {\it cascades}. Each cascade is followed by a continuous degassing, lasting for several seconds, corresponding to an open channel crossing the fluid layer. The periodicity between two cascades does not depend on the injected flow-rate. Inside one cascade, the properties of the overpressu…
A recent article (Khair and Kabarowski; Phys. Rev. Fluids 5, 033702) has studied the cross-streamline migration of electrophoretic particles in unbounded shear flows with weak inertia or viscoelasticity. That work compares their results with those reported in two of our previous studies (Choudhary et al.: J. Fluid Mech. 874; J. Fluid Mech. 898) and reports a disagreement in the derived analytical expressions. In this comment, we resolve this discrepancy. For viscoelastic flows, we show that Khair and Kabarowski have not accounted for a leading order surface integral of polymeric stress in thei…
Shear-thinning and viscoelasticity are two non-Newtonian fluid properties widely existing in biological fluids. In this study, we found that the translation motion of a rotating particle near a wall speed up firstly, and then slows down with enhancement of fluid viscoelasticity, which is different from the behavior reported in shear thinning fluid (Chen et al. J. Fluid Mech. 2021, 927). Our research is carried out by numerical simulation of Navier-Stokes equations combined with Oldroyd-B constitutive model. This work is expected to be helpful to understand the movement of a rotating sphere nea…
The Oldroyd-B model has been used extensively to predict a host of instabilities in shearing flows of viscoelastic fluids, often realized experimentally using polymer solutions. The present review, written on the occasion of the birth centenary of James Oldroyd, provides an overview of instabilities found across major classes of shearing flows. These comprise (i) the canonical rectilinear shearing flows including plane Couette, plane and pipe Poiseuille flows; (ii) viscometric shearing flows with curved streamlines such as those in the Taylor-Couette, cone-and-plate and parallel-plate geometri…
We investigate previously unclarified effects of fluid elasticity on shear-thickening in dilute suspensions in an Oldroyd-B viscoelastic fluid using a novel direct numerical simulation based on the smoothed profile method. Fluid elasticity is determined by the Weissenberg number Wi and by viscosity ratio $1-β=η_p/(η_s+η_p)$ which measures the coupling between the polymer stress and flow: $η_p$ and $η_s$ are the polymer and solvent viscosity, respectively. As $1-β$ increases, while the stresslet does not change significantly compared to that in the $β\to 1$ limit, the growth rate of the normaliz…
I shortly describe the main results on elastically driven instabilities and elastic turbulence in viscoelastic inertia-less flows with curved streamlines. Then I describe a theory of elastic turbulence and prediction of elastic waves at Re<<1 and Wi>>1, which speed depends on the elastic stress similarly to the Alfven waves in magneto-hydrodynamics and in in a contrast to all other fluid flows with wave speed depending on medium elasticity. Since the established and testified mechanism of elastic instability of viscoelastic flows with curvilinear streamlines becomes ineffective at zero curvatu…
Viscoelastic surface rheology plays an important role in multiphase systems. A typical example is the actin cortex which surrounds most animal cells. It shows elastic properties for short time scales and behaves viscous for longer time scales. Hence, realistic simulations of cell shape dynamics require a model capturing the entire elastic to viscous spectrum. However, currently there are no numerical methods to simulate deforming viscoelastic surfaces. Thus models for the cell cortex, or other viscoelastic surfaces, are usually based on assumptions or simplifications which limit their applicab…
A comprehensive, temporal and spatiotemporal linear stability analyses of a (driven) Oldroyd-B fluid with Poiseuille base flow profile in a horizontally aligned, square, Hele-Shaw cell is reported to identify the viable regions of topological transition of the advancing interface. The dimensionless groups governing stability are the Reynolds number, $Re = \frac{b^2 ρ\mathcal{U}_0}{12 η_0 L}$, the elasticity number, $E = \frac{12 λ(1-ν)η_0}{ρb^2}$ and the ratio of solvent to polymer solution viscosity, $ν= \frac{η_s}{η_0}$; here $b$ is the cell gap, $L$ is the length/width of the cell, $\mathca…
We analyze transient dynamics during shear start-up in viscoelastic flows between two parallel plates, with a specific focus on the signatures for the onset of transient shear banding using the Johnson-Segalman, non-stretching Rolie-Poly and Giesekus models. We explore the dynamics of shear start-up in monotonic regions of the constitutive curves using two different methodologies: (i) the oft-used `frozen-time' linear stability (eigenvalue) analysis, wherein we examine whether infinitesimal perturbations imposed on instantaneous stress components (treated as quasi steady states) exhibit expone…
We report experimental results on elastic instability in a viscoelastic channel shear flow due to only a natural non-smoothed inlet and small holes along the channel for pressure measurements. We show that non-normal mode instability results in elastic waves and chaotic flow self-organized into periodically cycled stream-wise streaks synchronized by elastic wave frequency. The chaotic flow persists above the transition with increasing $Wi$ further into elastic turbulence and drag reduction regimes. Thus, we resolve the recent puzzle whether strong prearranged perturbations are necessary to get…
For the clarification of the routes to elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT), it is essential to understand how viscoelasticity modulates coherent flow structures including the longitudinal vortices. We focused on a rotating plane Couette flow that provides two-dimensional (2D) roll cells for the steady laminar Newtonian-fluid case, and we investigated how the steady longitudinal vortices are modulated by viscoelasticity at different Weissenberg numbers. The viscoelasticity was found to induce an unsteady flow state where the 2D roll-cell structure was periodically enhanced and damped with a consta…
To elucidate the key factor for the quantitative prediction of the shear-thickening in suspensions in viscoelastic fluids, direct numerical simulations of many-particle suspensions in a multi-mode Oldroyd-B fluid are performed using the smoothed profile method. Suspension flow under simple shear flow is solved under periodic boundary conditions by using Lees--Edwards boundary conditions for particle dynamics and a time-dependent oblique coordinate system that evolves with mean shear flow for fluid dynamics. Semi-dilute many-particle suspensions up to a particle volume fraction of 0.1 are inves…
The behavior of flagellated bacteria swimming in non-Newtonian media remains an area with contradictory and conflicting results. We report on the behavior of wild-type and smooth-swimming E. coli in Newtonian, shear thinning and viscoelastic media, measuring their trajectories and swimming speed using a three dimensional real-time tracking microscope. We conclude that the speed enhancement in Methocel solution at higher concentration is due to shear-thinning and an analytical model is used to support our experimental result. We argue that shear-induced normal stresses reduce the wobbling behav…
Nontrivial steady flows have recently been found that capture the main structures of the turbulent buffer layer. We study the effects of polymer addition on these "exact coherent states" (ECS) in plane Couette flow. Despite the simplicity of the ECS flows, these effects closely mirror those observed experimentally: Structures shift to larger length scales, wall-normal fluctuations are suppressed while streamwise ones are enhanced, and drag is reduced. The mechanism underlying these effects is elucidated. These results suggest that the ECS are closely related to buffer layer turbulence.
The effects of viscoelasticity have been shown to manifest themselves via symmetry breaking. In this investigation, we show a novel phenomenon that arises from this idea. We observe that when a dense sphere is rotated near a wall (the rotation being aligned with the wall-normal direction and gravity), it levitates to a fixed distance away from the wall. Since the shear is larger in the gap (between the sphere and the wall) than in the open side of the sphere, the shear-induced elastic stresses are thus asymmetric, resulting in a net elastic vertical force that balances the weight of the sphere…
We show that viscoelastic plane Poiseuille flow becomes linearly unstable in the absence of inertia, in the limit of high elasticities, for ultra-dilute polymer solutions. While inertialess elastic instabilities have been predicted for curvilinear shear flows, this is the first ever report of a purely elastic linear instability in a rectilinear shear flow. The novel instability continues upto a Reynolds number ($Re$) of $O(1000)$, corresponding to the recently identified elasto-inertial turbulent state believed to underlie the maximum-drag-reduced regime. Thus, for highly elastic ultra-dilute …
The perturbations of the laminar shear-thinning viscoelastic pipe flow under Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic model with Peterlin approximation (FENE-P) are shown to exhibit leading-order power-law behaviours, and the expected odd-even parities with respect to the radial coordinate that depend on the azimuthal wave\-number, $n$. The analysis helps regularizing the governing system of equations at the centreline, and allows for a complete stability analysis of three-dimensional perturbations for a general integer value of $n$, which has hitherto remained a challenge for FENE-P models. It i…
The recently-discovered centre-mode instability of rectilinear viscoelastic shear flow (Garg et al. Phy. Rev. Lett. 121, 024502, 2018) has offered an explanation for the origin of elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT) which occurs at lower Weissenberg ($Wi$) numbers. In support of this, we show using weakly nonlinear analysis that the subcriticality found in Page et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 154501, 2020) is generic across the neutral curve with the instability only becoming supercritical at low Reynolds ($Re$) numbers and high $Wi$. We demonstrate that the instability can be viewed as purely elas…
We report the temporal and spatio-temporal stability analyses of anti-symmetric, free shear, viscoelastic flows obeying the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation in the limit of low to moderate Reynolds number and Weissenberg number. The resulting fourth order Orr-Sommerfeld equation is reduced to a set of six auxiliary equations which are numerically integrated starting from the rescaled far-field conditions, i.~e., via the Compound Matrix Method. Numerical results indicate that with increasing Weissenberg number: (a) the peak of the maximal growth rate (i. e., the maximum value of the imaginary co…
This work presents a novel numerical investigation of the dynamics of free-boundary flows of viscoelastic liquid membranes. The governing equation describes the balance of linear momentum, in which the stresses include the viscoelastic response to deformations of Maxwell type. A penalty method is utilized to enforce near incompressibility of the viscoelastic media, in which the penalty constant is proportional to the viscosity of the fluid. A finite element method is used, in which the slender geometry representing the liquid membrane, is discretized by linear three-node triangular elements un…
The current work studies the dynamics of a microswimmer in pressure-driven flow of a weakly viscoelastic fluid. Employing the second-order fluid model, we show that the self-propelling swimmer experiences a viscoelastic swimming lift in addition to the well-known passive lift that arises from its resistance to shear flow. Using the reciprocal theorem, we evaluate analytical expressions for the swimming lift experienced by neutral and pusher/puller-type swimmers and show that they depend on the hydrodynamic signature associated with the swimming mechanism. We find that for neutral swimmers focu…
We propose numerical simulations of viscoelastic fluids based on a hybrid algorithm combining Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and Finite Differences (FD) schemes, the former used to model the macroscopic hydrodynamic equations, and the latter used to model the polymer dynamics. The kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbells with Peterlin's closure (FENE-P). The numerical model is first benchmarked by characterizing the rheological behaviour of dilute homogeneous solutions in various configurat…
Active matter consists of units that generate mechanical work by consuming energy. Examples include living systems, such as assemblies of bacteria and biological tissues, biopolymers driven by molecular motors, and suspensions of synthetic self-propelled particles. A central question in the field is to understand and control the self-organization of active assemblies in space and time. Most active systems exhibit either spatial order mediated by interactions that coordinate the spatial structure and the motion of active agents or the temporal synchronization of individual oscillatory dynamics.…
We investigate the rheological characteristics of human blood plasma in shear and elongational flows. While we can confirm a Newtonian behavior in shear flow within experimental resolution, we find a viscoelastic behavior of blood plasma in the pure extensional flow of a capillary break-up rheometer. The influence of the viscoelasticity of blood plasma on capillary blood flow is tested in a microfluidic device with a contraction-expansion geometry. Differential pressure measurements revealed that the plasma has a pronounced flow resistance compared to that of pure water. Supplementary measurem…
The recoverable strain is shown to correlate to the temporal evolution of microstructure via time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and dynamic shear rheology. Investigating two distinct polymeric materials of wormlike micelles and fibrin network, we demonstrate that, in addition to the nonlinear structure-property relationships, the shear and normal stress evolution is dictated by the recoverable strain. A distinct sequence of physical processes under large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) is identified that clearly contains information regarding both the steady-state flow curv…
The flow inside a fluid damper where a piston reciprocates sinusoidally inside an outer casing containing high-viscosity silicone oil is simulated using a Finite Volume method, at various excitation frequencies. The oil is modelled by the Carreau-Yasuda (CY) and Phan-Thien \& Tanner (PTT) constitutive equations. Both models account for shear-thinning but only the PTT model accounts for elasticity. The CY and other generalised Newtonian models have been previously used in theoretical studies of fluid dampers, but the present study is the first to perform full two-dimensional (axisymmetric) simu…
We investigate the break-up of Newtonian/viscoelastic droplets in a viscoelastic/Newtonian matrix under the hydrodynamic conditions of a confined shear flow. Our numerical approach is based on a combination of Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and Finite Difference (FD) schemes. LBM are used to model two immiscible fluids with variable viscosity ratio (i.e. the ratio of the droplet to matrix viscosity); FD schemes are used to model viscoelasticity, and the kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbe…
We report quantitative evidence of mixing-layer elastic instability in a viscoelastic fluid flow between two widely spaced obstacles hindering a channel flow at $Re\ll1$ and $Wi\gg1$. Two mixing layers with nonuniform shear velocity profiles are formed in the region between the obstacles. The mixing-layer instability arises in the vicinity of an inflection point on the shear velocity profile with a steep variation in the elastic stress. The instability results in an intermittent appearance of small vortices in the mixing layers and an amplification of spatio-temporal averaged vorticity in the …
Attempts to achieve "top kill" of actively flowing oil wells by insertion of dense drilling "muds", i.e., slurries of dense minerals, from above will fail if the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the gravity-driven counterflow produces turbulence that breaks up the denser fluid into small droplets. Here we estimate the droplet size to be sub-mm for fast flows and suggest the addition of a shear-thickening polymer to suppress turbulence. Laboratory experiments show a progression from droplet formation to complete turbulence suppression at the relevant high velocities, illustrating rich new physic…
The steady flow of three viscoelastic fluids (Oldroyd-B, FENE-P, and Owens model for blood) in a two-dimensional channel, partly bound by a deformable, finite thickness neo-Hookean solid, is computed. The limiting Weissenberg number beyond which computations fail to converge is found to increase with increasing dimensionless solid elasticity parameter Γ, following the trend Owens > FENE- P > Oldroyd-B. The highly shear thinning nature of Owens model leads to the elastic solid always collapsing into the channel, for the wide range of values of Γ considered here. In the case of the FENE-P and Ol…
Recent theories predict that discontinuous shear-thickening (DST) involves an instability, the nature of which remains elusive. Here, we explore unsteady dynamics in a dense cornstarch suspension by coupling long rheological measurements under constant shear stresses to ultrasound imaging. We demonstrate that unsteadiness in DST results from localized bands that travel along the vorticity direction with a specific signature on the global shear rate response. These propagating events coexist with quiescent phases for stresses slightly above DST onset, resulting in intermittent, turbulent-like d…
