In this paper, we propose a no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) method via feature level pseudo-reference (PR) hallucination. The proposed quality assessment framework is grounded on the prior models of natural image statistical behaviors and rooted in the view that the perceptually meaningful features could be well exploited to characterize the visual quality. Herein, the PR features from the distorted images are learned by a mutual learning scheme with the pristine reference as the supervision, and the discriminative characteristics of PR features are further ensured with the triplet constraints. Given a distorted image for quality inference, the feature level disentanglement is performed with an invertible neural layer for final quality prediction, leading to the PR and the corresponding distortion features for comparison. The effectiveness of our proposed method is demonstrated on four popular IQA databases, and superior performance on cross-database evaluation also reveals the high generalization capability of our method. The implementation of our method is publicly available on https://github.com/Baoliang93/FPR.

An important scenario for image quality assessment (IQA) is to evaluate image restoration (IR) algorithms. The state-of-the-art approaches adopt a full-reference paradigm that compares restored images with their corresponding pristine-quality images. However, pristine-quality images are usually unavailable in blind image restoration tasks and real-world scenarios. In this paper, we propose a practical solution named degraded-reference IQA (DR-IQA), which exploits the inputs of IR models, degraded images, as references. Specifically, we extract reference information from degraded images by dist…
Objective image quality assessment deals with the prediction of digital images' perceptual quality. No-reference image quality assessment predicts the quality of a given input image without any knowledge or information about its pristine (distortion free) counterpart. Machine learning algorithms are heavily used in no-reference image quality assessment because it is very complicated to model the human visual system's quality perception. Moreover, no-reference image quality assessment algorithms are evaluated on publicly available benchmark databases. These databases contain images with their c…
The goal of full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) is to predict the quality of an image as perceived by human observers with using its pristine, reference counterpart. In this study, we explore a novel, combined approach which predicts the perceptual quality of a distorted image by compiling a feature vector from convolutional activation maps. More specifically, a reference-distorted image pair is run through a pretrained convolutional neural network and the activation maps are compared with a traditional image similarity metric. Subsequently, the resulted feature vector is mapped o…
In practical media distribution systems, visual content usually undergoes multiple stages of quality degradation along the delivery chain, but the pristine source content is rarely available at most quality monitoring points along the chain to serve as a reference for quality assessment. As a result, full-reference (FR) and reduced-reference (RR) image quality assessment (IQA) methods are generally infeasible. Although no-reference (NR) methods are readily applicable, their performance is often not reliable. On the other hand, intermediate references of degraded quality are often available, e.…

Perceptual quality assessment of the videos acquired in the wilds is of vital importance for quality assurance of video services. The inaccessibility of reference videos with pristine quality and the complexity of authentic distortions pose great challenges for this kind of blind video quality assessment (BVQA) task. Although model-based transfer learning is an effective and efficient paradigm for the BVQA task, it remains to be a challenge to explore what and how to bridge the domain shifts for better video representation. In this work, we propose to transfer knowledge from image quality asse…

Image Quality Assessment algorithms predict a quality score for a pristine or distorted input image, such that it correlates with human opinion. Traditional methods required a non-distorted "reference" version of the input image to compare with, in order to predict this score. However, recent "No-reference" methods circumvent this requirement by modelling the distribution of clean image features, thereby making them more suitable for practical use. However, majority of such methods either use hand-crafted features or require training on human opinion scores (supervised learning), which are dif…

The goal of No-Reference Image Quality Assessment (NR-IQA) is to estimate the perceptual image quality in accordance with subjective evaluations, it is a complex and unsolved problem due to the absence of the pristine reference image. In this paper, we propose a novel model to address the NR-IQA task by leveraging a hybrid approach that benefits from Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and self-attention mechanism in Transformers to extract both local and non-local features from the input image. We capture local structure information of the image via CNNs, then to circumvent the locality bias…

Full-reference (FR) image quality assessment (IQA) evaluates the visual quality of a distorted image by measuring its perceptual difference with pristine-quality reference, and has been widely used in low-level vision tasks. Pairwise labeled data with mean opinion score (MOS) are required in training FR-IQA model, but is time-consuming and cumbersome to collect. In contrast, unlabeled data can be easily collected from an image degradation or restoration process, making it encouraging to exploit unlabeled training data to boost FR-IQA performance. Moreover, due to the distribution inconsistency…
The enormous space and diversity of natural images is usually represented by a few small-scale human-rated image quality assessment (IQA) datasets. This casts great challenges to deep neural network (DNN) based blind IQA (BIQA), which requires large-scale training data that is representative of the natural image distribution. It is extremely difficult to create human-rated IQA datasets composed of millions of images due to constraints of subjective testing. While a number of efforts have focused on design innovations to enhance the performance of DNN based BIQA, attempts to address the scarcit…

For many computer vision problems, the deep neural networks are trained and validated based on the assumption that the input images are pristine (i.e., artifact-free). However, digital images are subject to a wide range of distortions in real application scenarios, while the practical issues regarding image quality in high level visual information understanding have been largely ignored. In this paper, in view of the fact that most widely deployed deep learning models are susceptible to various image distortions, the distorted images are involved for data augmentation in the deep neural networ…

Inspired by the free-energy brain theory, which implies that human visual system (HVS) tends to reduce uncertainty and restore perceptual details upon seeing a distorted image, we propose restorative adversarial net (RAN), a GAN-based model for no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA). RAN, which mimics the process of HVS, consists of three components: a restorator, a discriminator and an evaluator. The restorator restores and reconstructs input distorted image patches, while the discriminator distinguishes the reconstructed patches from the pristine distortion-free patches. After restor…
Multi-level deep-features have been driving state-of-the-art methods for aesthetics and image quality assessment (IQA). However, most IQA benchmarks are comprised of artificially distorted images, for which features derived from ImageNet under-perform. We propose a new IQA dataset and a weakly supervised feature learning approach to train features more suitable for IQA of artificially distorted images. The dataset, KADIS-700k, is far more extensive than similar works, consisting of 140,000 pristine images, 25 distortions types, totaling 700k distorted versions. Our weakly supervised feature le…

Objective assessment of image quality is fundamentally important in many image processing tasks. In this work, we focus on learning blind image quality assessment (BIQA) models which predict the quality of a digital image with no access to its original pristine-quality counterpart as reference. One of the biggest challenges in learning BIQA models is the conflict between the gigantic image space (which is in the dimension of the number of image pixels) and the extremely limited reliable ground truth data for training. Such data are typically collected via subjective testing, which is cumbersom…

Recent years have witnessed an ever-expandingvolume of user-generated content (UGC) videos available on the Internet. Nevertheless, progress on perceptual quality assessmentof UGC videos still remains quite limited. There are many distinguished characteristics of UGC videos in the complete video production and delivery chain, and one important property closely relevant to video quality is that there does not exist the pristine source after they are uploaded to the hosting platform, such that they often undergo multiple compression stages before ultimately viewed. To facilitate the UGC video qua…
Non-professional video, commonly known as User Generated Content (UGC) has become very popular in today's video sharing applications. However, traditional metrics used in compression and quality assessment, like BD-Rate and PSNR, are designed for pristine originals. Thus, their accuracy drops significantly when being applied on non-pristine originals (the majority of UGC). Understanding difficulties for compression and quality assessment in the scenario of UGC is important, but there are few public UGC datasets available for research. This paper introduces a large scale UGC dataset (1500 20 se…

Blind image quality assessment (BIQA), which aims to accurately predict the image quality without any pristine reference information, has been extensively concerned in the past decades. Especially, with the help of deep neural networks, great progress has been achieved. However, it remains less investigated on BIQA for night-time images (NTIs) which usually suffers from complicated authentic distortions such as reduced visibility, low contrast, additive noises, and color distortions. These diverse authentic degradations particularly challenges the design of effective deep neural network for bl…
Millions of cameras at edge are being deployed to power a variety of different deep learning applications. However, the frames captured by these cameras are not always pristine - they can be distorted due to lighting issues, sensor noise, compression etc. Such distortions not only deteriorate visual quality, they impact the accuracy of deep learning applications that process such video streams. In this work, we introduce AQuA, to protect application accuracy against such distorted frames by scoring the level of distortion in the frames. It takes into account the analytical quality of frames, n…
Full-reference (FR) image quality assessment (IQA) models assume a high quality "pristine" image as a reference against which to measure perceptual image quality. In many applications, however, the assumption that the reference image is of high quality may be untrue, leading to incorrect perceptual quality predictions. To address this, we propose a new two-step image quality prediction approach which integrates both no-reference (NR) and full-reference perceptual quality measurements into the quality prediction process. The no-reference module accounts for the possibly imperfect quality of the…
Virtual Reality (VR) and its applications have attracted significant and increasing attention. However, the requirements of much larger file sizes, different storage formats, and immersive viewing conditions pose significant challenges to the goals of acquiring, transmitting, compressing and displaying high quality VR content. Towards meeting these challenges, it is important to be able to understand the distortions that arise and that can affect the perceived quality of displayed VR content. It is also important to develop ways to automatically predict VR picture quality. Meeting these challe…
