We consider closed subschemes in the affine grassmannian obtained by degenerating $e$-fold products of flag varieties, embedded via a tuple of dominant cocharacters. For $G= \operatorname{GL}_2$, and cocharacters small relative to the characteristic, we relate the cycles of these degenerations to the representation theory of $G$. We then show that these degenerations smoothly model the geometry of (the special fibre of) low weight crystalline subspaces inside the Emerton--Gee stack classifying $p$-adic representations of the Galois group of a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. As an application we prove new cases of the Breuil--Mézard conjecture in dimension two.
Let $K$ be a local function field of characteristic $l$, $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field over $\mathbb{F}_p$ where $l \ne p$, and $\overlineρ: G_K \rightarrow \text{GL}_n (\mathbb{F})$ be a continuous representation. We apply the Taylor-Wiles-Kisin method over certain global function fields to construct a mod $p$ cycle map $\overline{\text{cyc}}$, from mod $p$ representations of $\text{GL}_n (\mathcal{O}_K)$ to the mod $p$ fibers of the framed universal deformation ring $R_{\overlineρ}^\square$. This allows us to obtain a function field analog of the Breuil--Mézard conjecture. Then we use the t…
We formulate a version of the Breuil--Mezard conjecture for quaternion algebras, and show that it follows from the Breuil--Mezard conjecture for GL_2. In the course of the proof we establish a mod p analogue of the Jacquet--Langlands correspondence for representations of GL_2(k), k a finite field of characteristic p.
We give a new local proof of the Breuil-Mézard conjecture in the case of a reducible representation of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, $p>2$, that has scalar semi-simplification, via a formalism of Paškūnas.
We prove the Breuil-Mezard conjecture for split non-scalar residual representations of Gal(Qp/Qp) by local methods. Combined with the cases previously proved in [18] and [24], this completes the proof of the conjecture (when p>3). As a consequence, the local restriction in the proof of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture in [18] is removed.
We give a new local proof of Breuil-Mézard conjecture for two dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, when $p\ge 5$ and the representation has scalar endomorphisms.
We compute the deformation rings of two dimensional mod l representations of Gal(Fbar/F) with fixed inertial type, for l an odd prime, p a prime distinct from p and F/Q_p a finite extension. We show that in this setting (when p is also odd) an analogue of the Breuil-Mézard conjecture holds, relating the special fibres of these deformation rings to the mod l reduction of certain irreducible representations of GL_2(O_F).
Serre's strong conjecture, now a theorem of Khare and Wintenberger, states that every two-dimensional continuous, odd, irreducible mod $p$ Galois representation $ρ$ arises from a modular form of a specific minimal weight $k(ρ)$, level $N(ρ)$ and character $ε(ρ)$. In this short paper we show that the minimal weight $k(ρ)$ is equal to a notion of minimal weight inspired by the recipe for weights introduced by Buzzard, Diamond and Jarvis. Moreover, using the Breuil-Mézard conjecture we show that both weight recipes are equal to the smallest $k \geq 2$ such that $ρ$ has a crystalline lift of Hodge…
Let p > 2 be prime. We state and prove (under mild hypotheses on the residual representation) a geometric refinement of the Breuil-Mézard conjecture for 2-dimensional mod p representations of the absolute Galois group of Qp. We also state a conjectural generalisation to n-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of an arbitrary finite extension of Qp, and give a conditional proof of this conjecture, subject to a certain R = T-type theorem together with a strong version of the weight part of Serre's conjecture for rank n unitary groups. We deduce an unconditional result in the c…
Let $l$ and $p$ be primes, let $F/\mathbb{Q}_p$ be a finite extension with absolute Galois group $G_F$, let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field of characteristic $l$, and let $\barρ : G_F \rightarrow GL_n(\mathbb{F})$ be a continuous representation. Let $R^\square(\barρ)$ be the universal framed deformation ring for $\barρ$. If $l = p$, then the Breuil--Mézard conjecture (as formulated by Emerton and Gee) relates the mod $l$ reduction of certain cycles in $R^\square(\barρ)$ to the mod $l$ reduction of certain representations of $GL_n(\mathcal{O}_F)$. We state an analogue of the Breuil--Mézard conje…
We compute the versal deformation ring of a split generic $2$-dimensional representation $χ_1\oplus χ_2$ of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. As an application, we show that the Breuil--Mézard conjecture for both non-split extensions of $χ_1$ by $χ_2$ and $χ_2$ by $χ_1$ implies the Breuil--Mézard conjecture for $χ_1\oplus χ_2$. The result is new for $p=2$, the proof works for all primes.
We prove in generic situations that the lattice in a tame type induced by the completed cohomology of a $U(3)$-arithmetic manifold is purely local, i.e., only depends on the Galois representation at places above $p$. This is a generalization to $\mathrm{GL}_3$ of the lattice conjecture of Breuil. In the process, we also prove the geometric Breuil-Mézard conjecture for (tamely) potentially crystalline deformation rings with Hodge-Tate weights $(0,1,2)$ as well as the Serre weight conjectures over an unramified field extending our previous results. We also prove results in modular representation…
We prove conjectures of Breuil and Breuil-Dembele (C. Breuil, "Sur un probleme de compatibilite local-global modulo p pour GL(2)"), including a generalisation from the principal series to the cuspidal case, subject to a mild global hypothesis that we make in order to apply certain R=T theorems. More precisely, we prove a multiplicity one result for the mod p cohomology of a Shimura curve at Iwahori level, and we show that certain apparently globally defined lattices in the cohomology of Shimura curves are determined by the corresponding local p-adic Galois representations. We also indicate a n…
We construct projective varieties in mixed characteristic whose singularities model, in generic cases, those of tamely potentially crystalline Galois deformation rings for unramified extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ with small regular Hodge-Tate weights. We establish several significant facts about their geometry including a unibranch property at special points and a representation theoretic description of the irreducible components of their special fibers. We derive from these geometric results a number of local and global consequences: the Breuil-Mézard conjecture in arbitrary dimension for tame…
We prove a conjecture of Conrad, Diamond, and Taylor on the size of certain deformation rings parametrizing potentially Barsotti-Tate Galois representations. To achieve this, we extend results of Breuil and Mezard (classifying Galois lattices in semistable representations in terms of "strongly divisible modules") to the potentially crystalline case in Hodge-Tate weights (0,1). We then use these strongly divisible modules to compute the desired deformation rings. As a corollary, we obtain new results on the modularity of potentially Barsotti-Tate representations.
