We present a network architecture which compares RGB images and untextured 3D models by the similarity of the represented shape. Our system is optimised for zero-shot retrieval, meaning it can recognise shapes never shown in training. We use a view-based shape descriptor and a siamese network to learn object geometry from pairs of 3D models and 2D images. Due to scarcity of datasets with exact photograph-mesh correspondences, we train our network with only synthetic data. Our experiments investigate the effect of different qualities and quantities of training data on retrieval accuracy and present insights from bridging the domain gap. We show that increasing the variety of synthetic data improves retrieval accuracy and that our system's performance in zero-shot mode can match that of the instance-aware mode, as far as narrowing down the search to the top 10% of objects.
We address the challenging task of video-based person re-identification. Recent works have shown that splitting the video sequences into clips and then aggregating clip based similarity is appropriate for the task. We show that using a learned clip similarity aggregation function allows filtering out hard clip pairs, e.g. where the person is not clearly visible, is in a challenging pose, or where the poses in the two clips are too different to be informative. This allows the method to focus on clip-pairs which are more informative for the task. We also introduce the use of 3D CNNs for video-ba…

We propose a semantic similarity metric for image registration. Existing metrics like euclidean distance or normalized cross-correlation focus on aligning intensity values, giving difficulties with low intensity contrast or noise. Our semantic approach learns dataset-specific features that drive the optimization of a learning-based registration model. Comparing to existing unsupervised and supervised methods across multiple image modalities and applications, we achieve consistently high registration accuracy and faster convergence than state of the art, and the learned invariance to noise give…

Estimating a depth map from multiple views of a scene is a fundamental task in computer vision. As soon as more than two viewpoints are available, one faces the very basic question how to measure similarity across >2 image patches. Surprisingly, no direct solution exists, instead it is common to fall back to more or less robust averaging of two-view similarities. Encouraged by the success of machine learning, and in particular convolutional neural networks, we propose to learn a matching function which directly maps multiple image patches to a scalar similarity score. Experiments on several mu…

We present an autoencoder that leverages learned representations to better measure similarities in data space. By combining a variational autoencoder with a generative adversarial network we can use learned feature representations in the GAN discriminator as basis for the VAE reconstruction objective. Thereby, we replace element-wise errors with feature-wise errors to better capture the data distribution while offering invariance towards e.g. translation. We apply our method to images of faces and show that it outperforms VAEs with element-wise similarity measures in terms of visual fidelity. …

Purpose: The fusion of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and magnetic resonance (MR) images for guiding targeted prostate biopsy has significantly improved the biopsy yield of aggressive cancers. A key component of MR-TRUS fusion is image registration. However, it is very challenging to obtain a robust automatic MR-TRUS registration due to the large appearance difference between the two imaging modalities. The work presented in this paper aims to tackle this problem by addressing two challenges: (i) the definition of a suitable similarity metric and (ii) the determination of a suitable optimizatio…
Rich semantics inside an image result in its ambiguous relationship with others, i.e., two images could be similar in one condition but dissimilar in another. Given triplets like "aircraft" is similar to "bird" than "train", Weakly Supervised Conditional Similarity Learning (WS-CSL) learns multiple embeddings to match semantic conditions without explicit condition labels such as "can fly". However, similarity relationships in a triplet are uncertain except providing a condition. For example, the previous comparison becomes invalid once the conditional label changes to "is vehicle". To this end…

Existing perceptual similarity metrics assume an image and its reference are well aligned. As a result, these metrics are often sensitive to a small alignment error that is imperceptible to the human eyes. This paper studies the effect of small misalignment, specifically a small shift between the input and reference image, on existing metrics, and accordingly develops a shift-tolerant similarity metric. This paper builds upon LPIPS, a widely used learned perceptual similarity metric, and explores architectural design considerations to make it robust against imperceptible misalignment. Specific…

Predicting human perceptual similarity is a challenging subject of ongoing research. The visual process underlying this aspect of human vision is thought to employ multiple different levels of visual analysis (shapes, objects, texture, layout, color, etc). In this paper, we postulate that the perception of image similarity is not an explicitly learned capability, but rather one that is a byproduct of learning others. This claim is supported by leveraging representations learned from a diverse set of visual tasks and using them jointly to predict perceptual similarity. This is done via simple f…

Deformable registration has been one of the pillars of biomedical image computing. Conventional approaches refer to the definition of a similarity criterion that, once endowed with a deformation model and a smoothness constraint, determines the optimal transformation to align two given images. The definition of this metric function is among the most critical aspects of the registration process. We argue that incorporating semantic information (in the form of anatomical segmentation maps) into the registration process will further improve the accuracy of the results. In this paper, we propose a…

Image deraining is a typical low-level image restoration task, which aims at decomposing the rainy image into two distinguishable layers: the clean image layer and the rain layer. Most of the existing learning-based deraining methods are supervisedly trained on synthetic rainy-clean pairs. The domain gap between the synthetic and real rains makes them less generalized to different real rainy scenes. Moreover, the existing methods mainly utilize the property of the two layers independently, while few of them have considered the mutually exclusive relationship between the two layers. In this wor…
We present ALADIN (All Layer AdaIN); a novel architecture for searching images based on the similarity of their artistic style. Representation learning is critical to visual search, where distance in the learned search embedding reflects image similarity. Learning an embedding that discriminates fine-grained variations in style is hard, due to the difficulty of defining and labelling style. ALADIN takes a weakly supervised approach to learning a representation for fine-grained style similarity of digital artworks, leveraging BAM-FG, a novel large-scale dataset of user generated content groupin…

The usefulness of deep learning models in robotics is largely dependent on the availability of training data. Manual annotation of training data is often infeasible. Synthetic data is a viable alternative, but suffers from domain gap. We propose a multi-step method to obtain training data without manual annotation effort: From 3D object meshes, we generate images using a modern synthesis pipeline. We utilize a state-of-the-art image-to-image translation method to adapt the synthetic images to the real domain, minimizing the domain gap in a learned manner. The translation network is trained fro…
Most of the existing learning-based deraining methods are supervisedly trained on synthetic rainy-clean pairs. The domain gap between the synthetic and real rain makes them less generalized to complex real rainy scenes. Moreover, the existing methods mainly utilize the property of the image or rain layers independently, while few of them have considered their mutually exclusive relationship. To solve above dilemma, we explore the intrinsic intra-similarity within each layer and inter-exclusiveness between two layers and propose an unsupervised non-local contrastive learning (NLCL) deraining me…

In this paper, we propose an instance similarity learning (ISL) method for unsupervised feature representation. Conventional methods assign close instance pairs in the feature space with high similarity, which usually leads to wrong pairwise relationship for large neighborhoods because the Euclidean distance fails to depict the true semantic similarity on the feature manifold. On the contrary, our method mines the feature manifold in an unsupervised manner, through which the semantic similarity among instances is learned in order to obtain discriminative representations. Specifically, we emplo…

We present a descriptor, called fully convolutional self-similarity (FCSS), for dense semantic correspondence. To robustly match points among different instances within the same object class, we formulate FCSS using local self-similarity (LSS) within a fully convolutional network. In contrast to existing CNN-based descriptors, FCSS is inherently insensitive to intra-class appearance variations because of its LSS-based structure, while maintaining the precise localization ability of deep neural networks. The sampling patterns of local structure and the self-similarity measure are jointly learne…
This letter presents a method of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image despeckling aimed to preserve the detail information while suppressing speckle noise. This method combines the nonlocal self-similarity partition and a proposed modified sparse decomposition. The nonlocal partition method groups a series of structure-similarity data sets. Each data set has a good sparsity for learning an over-complete dictionary in sparse representation. In the sparse decomposition, we propose a novel method to identify principal atoms from over-complete dictionary to form a principal dictionary. Despeckling…

Despite the success of deep learning on representing images for particular object retrieval, recent studies show that the learned representations still lie on manifolds in a high dimensional space. This makes the Euclidean nearest neighbor search biased for this task. Exploring the manifolds online remains expensive even if a nearest neighbor graph has been computed offline. This work introduces an explicit embedding reducing manifold search to Euclidean search followed by dot product similarity search. This is equivalent to linear graph filtering of a sparse signal in the frequency domain. To…
Neural networks should be interpretable to humans. In particular, there is a growing interest in concepts learned in a layer and similarity between layers. In this work, a tool, UMAP Tour, is built to visually inspect and compare internal behavior of real-world neural network models using well-aligned, instance-level representations. The method used in the visualization also implies a new similarity measure between neural network layers. Using the visual tool and the similarity measure, we find concepts learned in state-of-the-art models and dissimilarities between them, such as GoogLeNet and …

Classifying large-scale image data into object categories is an important problem that has received increasing research attention. Given the huge amount of data, non-parametric approaches such as nearest neighbor classifiers have shown promising results, especially when they are underpinned by a learned distance or similarity measurement. Although metric learning has been well studied in the past decades, most existing algorithms are impractical to handle large-scale data sets. In this paper, we present an image similarity learning method that can scale well in both the number of images and th…

This paper proposes a new end-to-end trainable model for lossy image compression, which includes several novel components. The method incorporates 1) an adequate perceptual similarity metric; 2) saliency in the images; 3) a hierarchical auto-regressive model. This paper demonstrates that the popularly used evaluations metrics such as MS-SSIM and PSNR are inadequate for judging the performance of image compression techniques as they do not align with the human perception of similarity. Alternatively, a new metric is proposed, which is learned on perceptual similarity data specific to image comp…
We demonstrate the use of similarity domains (SDs) for shape modeling and skeleton extraction. SDs are recently proposed and they can be utilized in a neural network framework to help us analyze shapes. SDs are modeled with radial basis functions with varying shape parameters in Similarity Domains Networks (SDNs). In this paper, we demonstrate how using SDN can first help us model a pixel-based image in terms of SDs and then demonstrate how those learned SDs can be used to extract the skeleton of a shape.

Automatically discovering image categories in unlabeled natural images is one of the important goals of unsupervised learning. However, the task is challenging and even human beings define visual categories based on a large amount of prior knowledge. In this paper, we similarly utilize prior knowledge to facilitate the discovery of image categories. We present a novel end-to-end network to map unlabeled images to categories as a clustering network. We propose that this network can be learned with contrastive loss which is only based on weak binary pair-wise constraints. Such binary constraints…
We present a method for inferring dense depth maps from images and sparse depth measurements by leveraging synthetic data to learn the association of sparse point clouds with dense natural shapes, and using the image as evidence to validate the predicted depth map. Our learned prior for natural shapes uses only sparse depth as input, not images, so the method is not affected by the covariate shift when attempting to transfer learned models from synthetic data to real ones. This allows us to use abundant synthetic data with ground truth to learn the most difficult component of the reconstructio…
Robot perception systems need to perform reliable image segmentation in real-time on noisy, raw perception data. State-of-the-art segmentation approaches use large CNN models and carefully constructed datasets; however, these models focus on accuracy at the cost of real-time inference. Furthermore, the standard semantic segmentation datasets are not large enough for training CNNs without augmentation and are not representative of noisy, uncurated robot perception data. We propose improving the performance of real-time segmentation frameworks on robot perception data by transferring features le…

Case studies are presented that illustrate that the novel methodology can yield meaningful forecasts without excessive blur for the time horizons of interest.

While existing predictive frameworks are able to handle Euclidean structured data (i.e, brain images), they might fail to generalize to geometric non-Euclidean data such as brain networks. Besides, these are rooted the sample selection step in using Euclidean or learned similarity measure between vectorized training and testing brain networks. Such sample connectomic representation might include irrelevant and redundant features that could mislead the training sample selection step. Undoubtedly, this fails to exploit and preserve the topology of the brain connectome. To overcome this major dra…
Several deep learned lossy compression techniques have been proposed in the recent literature. Most of these are optimized by using either MS-SSIM (multi-scale structural similarity) or MSE (mean squared error) as a loss function. Unfortunately, neither of these correlate well with human perception and this is clearly visible from the resulting compressed images. In several cases, the MS-SSIM for deep learned techniques is higher than say a conventional, non-deep learned codec such as JPEG-2000 or BPG. However, the images produced by these deep learned techniques are in many cases clearly wors…

Existing nonnegative matrix factorization methods focus on learning global structure of the data to construct basis and coefficient matrices, which ignores the local structure that commonly exists among data. In this paper, we propose a new type of nonnegative matrix factorization method, which learns local similarity and clustering in a mutually enhancing way. The learned new representation is more representative in that it better reveals inherent geometric property of the data. Nonlinear expansion is given and efficient multiplicative updates are developed with theoretical convergence guaran…
It has been recently shown that the hidden variables of convolutional neural networks make for an efficient perceptual similarity metric that accurately predicts human judgment on relative image similarity assessment. First, we show that such learned perceptual similarity metrics (LPIPS) are susceptible to adversarial attacks that dramatically contradict human visual similarity judgment. While this is not surprising in light of neural networks' well-known weakness to adversarial perturbations, we proceed to show that self-ensembling with an infinite family of random transformations of the inpu…
