The isotope abundances provide powerful diagnostics of the chemical enrichment in our Galaxy. The star HD 140283 is one of the best-studied very metal-poor dwarf stars. It is very old, and the chemical abundance in this star is a good witness of the chemical composition of the matter in the early Galaxy. The aim of this work is to measure the precise abundances of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and mainly the 12C/13C isotopic ratio in this very old metal-poor star in order to have a good reference for the computations of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. We used very high spectral resolution data, with extremely high signal-to-noise ratios obtained with the spectrographs ESPaDOnS at the CFHT, ESPRESSO at the VLT, and HARPS at the ESO 3.6m telescope. For the first time, we were able to measure the 12C/13C ratio in a very old metal-poor dwarf that was born at the very beginning of the Galaxy: 27 < 12C/13C < 45. We also obtained a precise determination of the abundance of the CNO elements in this star. These abundances suggest that the effect of super-asymptotic giant branch stars or fast-rotating massive stars was significant in the early Galaxy.
(shortened) The first couple of stellar generations may have been massive, of order 100 Msun, and to have played a dominant role in galaxy formation and the chemical enrichment of the early Universe. Some fraction of these objects may have died as pair-instability supernovae or gamma-ray bursts. The winds if these stars may have played an important role in determining these outcomes. As the winds are driven by radiation pressure on spectral lines, their strengths are expected to vary with metallicity. Until now, most mass-loss predictions for metal-poor O-type stars have assumed a scaled-down …
Observations suggest that the interstellar medium (ISM) might have been highly enriched in carbon at very early times. We explore nucleosynthesis in massive carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars of $12$--$40\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ formed from such an ISM with ${\rm [Fe]}\leq-2$. We find substantial production of elements heavier than Fe, mostly up to Sr, by the weak \textsl{s}-process in stars with initial abundances of ${\rm [CNO]}\gtrsim-1.5$. Even heavier elements, up to Ba, can be produced for ${\rm [CNO]}\gtrsim-0.5$. The efficiency of this \textsl{s}-process is sensitive to the initial enh…
We present an analysis of high-resolution Keck/HIRES spectroscopic observations of J0815+4729, an extremely carbon-enhanced, iron-poor dwarf star. These high-quality data allow us to derive a metallicity of [Fe/H]$=-5.49{\pm}0.14$ from the three strongest \ion{Fe}{1} lines and to measure a high [Ca/Fe]~$=0.75{\pm}0.14$. The large carbon abundance of A(C)~$=7.43{\pm}0.17$ (or [C/Fe]~$\sim 4.49{\pm}0.11$) places this star in the upper boundary of the low-carbon band in the A(C)-[Fe/H] diagram, suggesting no contamination from a binary AGB companion. We detect the oxygen triplet at 777nm for the …

Recently the search for the oldest stars have started to focus on the Bulge region. The Galactic bulge hosts extremely old stars, with ages compatible with the ages of the oldest halo stars. The data coming from these recent observations present new chemical signatures and therefore provide complementary constraints to those already found in the halo. So, the study of the oldest bulge stars can improve dramatically the constraints on the nature of first stars and how they polluted the pristine ISM of our Galaxy. We present our first results regarding the light elements (CNO) and the neutron ca…
Context. Tighter constraints on metal-poor stars we observe are needed to better understand the chemical processes of the early Universe. Computing a stellar spectrum in 3D allows one to model complex stellar behaviours, which cannot be replicated in 1D. Aims. We examine the effect that the intrinsic CNO abundances have on a 3D model structure and the resulting 3D spectrum synthesis. Methods. Model atmospheres were computed in 3D for three distinct CNO chemical compositions using the CO 5 BOLD model atmosphere code, and their internal structures were examined. Synthetic spectra were computed f…
We examine the spatial distribution of the oldest and most metal poor stellar populations of Milky Way-sized galaxies using the APOSTLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the Local Group. In agreement with earlier work, we find strong radial gradients in the fraction of the oldest (tform < 0.8 Gyr) and most metal poor ([Fe/H]< -2.5) stars, both of which increase outwards. The most metal poor stars form over an extended period of time; half of them form after z = 5.3, and the last 10% after z = 2.8. The age of the metal poor stellar population also shows significant variation with envir…
The chemical abundances of metal-poor stars provide a great deal of information regarding the individual nucleosynthetic processes that created the observed elements and the overall process of chemical enrichment of the galaxy since the formation of the first stars. Here we review the abundance patterns of the neutron-capture elements (Z > 38) in those metal-poor stars and our current understanding of the conditions and sites of their production at early times. We also review the relative contributions of these different processes to the build-up of these elements within the galaxy over time, …
We present a new grid of stellar models and isochrones for old stellar populations, covering a large range of [Fe/H] values, for an heavy element mixture characterized by CNONa abundance anticorrelations as observed in Galactic globular cluster stars. The effect of this metal abundance pattern on the evolutionary properties of low mass stars, from the main sequence to the horizontal branch phase is analyzed. We perform comparisons between these new models, and our reference alpha-enhanced calculations, and discuss briefly implications for CMDs showing multiple main sequence or subgiant branche…
For the first time, a direct NLTE analysis of carbon and nitrogen lines in the spectra of nine RR Lyrae stars was carried out. We have determined the abundances of these elements together with oxygen, and have shown that the nitrogen content is increased in metallicity deficient program stars. We conclude that this is a sign of the first dredge up, which occurred at the previous stage of the red giant branch, and brought material processed in an incomplete CNO cycle to the surface of the star. This effect is significantly enhanced by thermohaline (extra-) mixing, which is more effective for me…
Globular Clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way represent the ideal laboratory to establish the age of the oldest stellar populations and to measure the color-magnitude relation of stars. Infrared (IR) photometry of these objects provides a new opportunity to accomplish this task. In particular, at low stellar masses, the stellar main sequence (MS) in an IR color-magnitude diagram (CMD) exhibits a sharp "kink" (due to opacity effects in M dwarfs), such that lower mass and cooler dwarfs become bluer in the F110W - F160W color baseline and not redder. This inversion of the color-magnitude relation offe…

We studied the Na-O anti-correlation from moderately high resolution spectra for 35 stars on the blue HB (BHB), one RR Lyrae, and 55 stars are on the red HB (RHB) of NGC1851. We also derived abundances for He and N in BHB stars, and Ba and upper limits for N in RHB stars. The RHB stars clearly separate into two groups: the vast majority are O-rich and Na-poor, while about 10-15% are Na-rich and moderately O-poor. Most Na-rich RHB stars are also Ba-rich and there is an overall correlation between Na and Ba abundances within the RHB. The group of Ba-rich RHB stars resides on the warmer edge and …

We report the discovery of 30 stars with extreme space velocities ($>$ 480 km/s) in the Gaia-DR2 archive. These stars are a subset of 1743 stars with high-precision parallax, large tangential velocity ($v_{tan}>$ 300 km/s), and measured line-of-sight velocity in DR2. By tracing the orbits of the stars back in time, we find at least one of them is consistent with having been ejected by the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center. Another star has an orbit that passed near the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) about 200 Myr ago. Unlike previously discovered blue hypervelocity stars, our sample…
In an attempt to constrain evolutionary models of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase at the limit of low masses and low metallicities, we have examined the luminosity functions and number ratio between AGB and red giant branch (RGB) stars from a sample of resolved galaxies from the ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST). This database provides HST optical photometry together with maps of completeness, photometric errors, and star formation histories for dozens of galaxies within 4 Mpc. We select 12 galaxies characterized by predominantly metal-poor populations as indicated by a very st…
The origin of calcium production in the first stars (Pop III stars), which formed out of the primordial matter of the Big Bang, and their fates, remain most fascinating mysteries in astrophysics. Advanced nuclear burning and supernovae were thought to be the dominant source of the Ca production seen in all stars. Here we report on a qualitatively different path to Ca production through break-out from the "warm" carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle. We extend direct measurement of the $^{19}$F($p$, $γ$)$^{20}$Ne break-out reaction down to an unprecedentedly low energy point of 186 keV and discove…
The bulge is the oldest component of the Milky Way. Since numerous simulations of Milky Way formation have predicted that the oldest stars at a given metallicity are found on tightly bound orbits, the Galaxy's oldest stars are likely metal-poor stars in the inner bulge with small apocenters (i.e., $R_{\mathrm{apo}}\lesssim4$ kpc). In the past, stars with these properties have been impossible to find due to extreme reddening and extinction along the line of sight to the inner bulge. We have used the mid-infrared metal-poor star selection of Schlaufman & Casey (2014) on Spitzer/GLIMPSE data to o…
Elemental correlations and anti-correlations are known to be present in globular clusters (GCs) owing to pollution by CNO cycled gas. Because of its fragility Li is destroyed at the temperature at which the CNO cycling occurs, and this makes Li a crucial study for the nature of the contaminating stars. We observed 112 un-evolved stars at the Turnoff of the NGC6752 cluster with FLAMES at the VLT to investigate the presence and the extent of a Li-O correlation. This correlation is expected if there is a simple pollution scenario. Li (670.8 nm) and O triplet (771 nm) abundances are derived in NLT…
We report the discovery of one extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H]<-3) and one ultra metal-poor (UMP; [Fe/H]<-4) star selected from the SDSS/SEGUE survey. These stars were identified as EMP candidates based on their medium-resolution (R~2,000) spectra, and were followed-up with high-resolution (R~35,000) spectroscopy with the Magellan-Clay Telescope. Their derived chemical abundances exhibit good agreement with those of stars with similar metallicities. We also provide new insights on the formation of the UMP stars, based on comparison with a new set of theoretical models of supernovae nucleosyn…
Studying a range of old metal-poor stars provides information over cosmological timescales of our Galaxy. Such studies are indicative of the pristine gases and evolution of the Milky Way. Deriving stellar parameters and abundances from high-resolution observations of stars at various stellar evolution stages (including old dwarfs and RR Lyrae), allows us to use these abundances as tracers of an even earlier progenitor population. Here, we carry out a detailed abundance study of mainly heavy elements (Z > 38), i.e. neutron-capture elements, which we at low metallicities ([Fe/H] < -2.5) take as …
We study the ages of $α$-rich and $α$-poor stars in the halo using a sample of F and G dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). To separate stars based on [$α$/Fe], we have developed a new semi-empirical spectral-index based method and applied it to the low-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise SDSS spectra. The method can be used to estimate the [$α$/Fe] directly providing a new and widely applicable way to estimate [$α$/Fe] from low-resolution spectra. We measured the main-sequence turnoff temperature and combined it with the metallicities and a set of isochrones to estimate the age o…
We have analyzed a sample of 27,258 fundamental-mode RR Lyrae variable stars (type RRab) detected recently toward the Galactic bulge by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) survey. The data support our earlier claim that these metal-poor stars trace closely the barred structure formed of intermediate-age red clump giants. The distance to the Galactic center (GC) inferred from the bulge RR Lyrae stars is R_0=8.27+/-0.01(stat)+/-0.40(sys) kpc. We show that their spatial distribution has the shape of a triaxial ellipsoid with an major axis located in the Galactic plane and inclined…
Measurements of lithium (Li) abundances in open clusters provide a unique tool for following the evolution of this element with age, metallicity, and stellar mass. Using FLAMES/Giraffe on the VLT, we obtained spectra of 157 candidate members of the old, metal-poor cluster Berkeley 32, to determine membership and to study the Li behavior of confirmed members. Radial velocities were measured, allowing us to derive both the cluster velocity and membership information for the sample stars. The Li abundances were obtained from the equivalent width of the Li I 670.8 nm feature, using curves of growt…
Abundance analyses of the two newly discovered R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars ASAS-RCB-8 and ASAS-RCB-10 were conducted using high-resolution optical spectra and model atmospheres. Their chemical compositions place the pair among the majority class of RCBs. ASAS-RCB-10 is one of the most N-poor majority RCBs with an above average O abundance. Relative to ASAS-RCB-10, ASAS-RCB-8 is H poor by 1.6 dex, O-poor by 0.7 dex but N-rich by 0.8 dex suggesting a higher contamination by CNO-cycled material.
Metal-poor stars provide the fossil record of Galactic chemical evolution and the nucleosynthesis processes that took place at the earliest times in the history of our Galaxy. From detailed abundance studies of low mass, extremely metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] < -3), we can trace and help constrain the formation processes which created the first heavy elements in our Galaxy. Here we present the results of a ~25-star homogeneously analysed sample of metal-poor candidates from the Hamburg/ESO survey. We have derived abundances for a large number of elements ranging from Li to Ba, covering production …
Cosmological models predict the oldest stars in the Galaxy should be found closest to the centre of the potential well, in the bulge. The EMBLA Survey successfully searched for these old, metal-poor stars by making use of the distinctive SkyMapper photometric filters to discover candidate metal-poor stars in the bulge. Their metal-poor nature was then confirmed using the AAOmega spectrograph on the AAT. Here we present an abundance analysis of 10 bulge stars with -2.8<[Fe/H]<-1.7 from MIKE/Magellan observations, in total determining the abundances of 22 elements. Combining these results with o…

As part of a long term programme, we analyse the evolutionary status and properties of the old and populous open cluster Trumpler 5 (Tr 5), located in the Galactic anticentre direction, almost on the Galactic plane. Tr 5 was observed with WFI@MPG/ESO Telescope using the Bessel $U$, $B$, and $V$ filters. The cluster parameters have been obtained using the synthetic colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) method, i.e. the direct comparison of the observational CMD with a library of synthetic CMDs generated with different stellar evolution sets (Padova, FRANEC, and FST). Age, reddening, and distance are d…
The characteristics of the stellar populations in the Galactic Bulge inform and constrain the Milky Way's formation and evolution. The metal-poor population is particularly important in light of cosmological simulations, which predict that some of the oldest stars in the Galaxy now reside in its center. The metal-poor bulge appears to consist of multiple stellar populations that require dynamical analyses to disentangle. In this work, we undertake a detailed chemodynamical study of the metal-poor stars in the inner Galaxy. Using R$\sim$ 20,000 VLT/GIRAFFE spectra of 319 metal-poor (-2.55 dex$\…
Very metal-poor halo stars are the best candidates for being among the oldest objects in our Galaxy. Samples of halo stars with age determination and detailed chemical composition measurements provide key information for constraining the nature of the first stellar generations and the nucleosynthesis in the metal-poor regime.} Age estimates are very uncertain and are available for only a small number of metal-poor stars. Here we present the first results of a pilot program aimed at deriving precise masses, ages and chemical abundances for metal-poor halo giants using asteroseismology, and high…
The abundance of beryllium in the oldest, most metal-poor stars acts as a probe of early star formation and Galactic chemical evolution. We have analyzed high-resolution, high signal-to-noise Keck/HIRES spectra of 24 stars with [Fe/H] from -2.3 to -3.5 in order to determine the history of Be abundances and explore the possibility of a Be plateau. We have determined stellar parameters spectroscopically. Oxygen abundances have been derived from three OH features which occur in the same spectral region. We have supplemented this sample with reanalyzed spectra of 25 stars from previous observation…
We have been exploring large spectroscopic databases such as SDSS to search for unique stars with extremely low iron content with the goal of extracting detailed information from the early phases of the Galaxy. We recently identified two extremely iron-poor dwarf stars J0815+4729 (Aguado et al. 2018a) and J0023+0307 (Aguado et al. 2018b) from SDSS/BOSS database and confirmed from high-quality spectra taken with ISIS and OSIRIS spectrographs at the 4.2m WHT and 10.4m GTC telescopes, respectively, located in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). We have also acquired high-resolution spectroscopy wit…
Aims. The aim of this work is to compare the detailed chemical composition of the field N-rich dwarf stars to the second generation stars of globular clusters (GC) in order to investigate the hypothesis that they originated in GCs. Methods. We have measured the abundance of 23 elements (from Li to Eu) in a sample of six metal-poor N-rich stars (three of them pointed out for the first time) and we have compared their chemical composition to, (i) the chemical composition observed in a sample of classical metal-poor stars, and (ii) the abundances observed in the second generation stars of GCs. Re…
(Abridged) The CEMP--no stars are "carbon-enhanced-metal-poor" stars that in principle show no evidence of s-- and r--elements from neutron captures. We try to understand the origin and nucleosynthetic site of their peculiar CNO, Ne--Na, and Mg--Al abundances. We compare the observed abundances to the nucleosynthetic predictions of AGB models and of models of rotating massive stars with internal mixing and mass loss. We also analyze the different behaviors of $α$-- and CNO--elements, as well the abundances of elements involved in the Ne--Na and Mg--Al cycles. We show that CEMP-no stars exhibit…
Context. The study of old, metal-poor stars deepens our knowledge on the early stages of the universe. In particular, the study of these stars gives us a valuable insight into the masses of the first massive stars and their emission of ionising photons. Aims. We present a detailed chemical analysis and determination of the kinematic and orbital properties of a sample of 11 dwarf stars. These are metal-poor stars, and a few of them present a low lithium content. We inspected whether the other elements also present anomalies. Methods. We analysed the high-resolution UVES spectra of a few metal-p…
We present JHK near-infrared photometric study for the old open cluster (OC) Trumpler 5 (Tr 5), based on the 2MASS data. From the color-magnitude diagrams of Tr 5, we have located the position of the red giant clump (RGC) stars, and used the mean magnitude of the RGC stars in K-band to estimate the distance to Tr 5, d = 3.1 +/- 0.1 kpc ((m-M)_0 = 12.46 +/- 0.04). From fitting the theoretical isochrones of Padova group, we have estimated the reddening, metallicity, and age : E(B-V) = 0.64 +/- 0.05, [Fe/H] = -0.4 +/- 0.1 dex, and t =2.8 +/- 0.2 Gyr (log t=9.45 +/- 0.04), respectively. These para…
New, high-resolution MARCS synthetic spectra have been calculated for more than a dozen mixtures of the metals allowing, in turn, for variations in C:N:O, [CNO/Fe], and enhanced abundances of C, O, Mg, and Si. Bolometric Corrections (BCs) for many of the broad-band filters currently in use have been generated from these spectra. Due to improved treatments of molecules that involve atoms of C, N, and O, the BCs for UV and blue passbands, in particular, differ substantially from those derived from previous MARCS models. These differences, and the effects on BCs of varying the abundances of the m…
The open cluster M67 has solar metallicity and an age of about 4Gyr. The turn-off mass is close to the minimum mass for which solar metallicity stars develop a convective core during main sequence evolution as a result of the development of hydrogen burning through the CNO-cycle. The morphology of the color-magnitude-diagram (CMD) of M67 around the turn-off shows a clear hook-like feature, direct sign that stars close to the turn-off have convective cores. VandenBerg et al. investigated the possibility of using the morphology of the M67 turn-off to put constraints on the solar metallicity, par…
We report the discovery of J1521-3538, a bright (V=12.2), very metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-2.8) strongly r-process enhanced field horizontal branch star, based on a high-resolution, high signal-to-noise Magellan/MIKE spectrum. J1521-3538 shows the largest r-process element over-abundance in any known r-process-enhanced star, with [Eu/Fe]=+2.2, and its chemical abundances of 22 neutron-capture elements closely match the scaled solar r-process pattern. J1521-3538 is also one of few known carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars with r-process enhancement (CEMP-r stars), as found after correcting the measured C …
The oldest, most metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo and satellite dwarf galaxies present an opportunity to explore the chemical and physical conditions of the earliest star forming environments in the Universe. We review the fields of stellar archaeology and dwarf galaxy archaeology by examining the chemical abundance measurements of various elements in extremely metal-poor stars. Focus on the carbon-rich and carbon-normal halo star populations illustrates how these provide insight into the Population III star progenitors responsible for the first metal enrichment events. We extend the disc…
Stellar models for -2.5 <= [Fe/H] <= -0.5 that have been computed for variations in the C:N:O abundance ratio (for two different values of [CNO/Fe]) are compared with HST Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) observations of the globular clusters (GCs) 47 Tuc, NGC 6362, M5, M5, M55, and M92. The bolometric corrections used to transpose the models to the observed planes are based on new MARCS synthetic spectra that incorporate improved treatments of molecules that involve atoms of C, N, and O. On the assumption of well-supported distance moduli and reddenings, isochrones for [O/Fe] = 0.6 and [m/Fe] = 0.4 …
[Context]. The standard solar model fails to predict the very low lithium abundance in the Sun, which is much lower than the proto-solar nebula. This Li problem has been debated for decades, and it has been ascribed either to planet formation or to secular stellar depletion. In order to test the evolution of Li, it is important to find solar twins in a range of ages. Also, the study of stars similar to the Sun is relevant in relation to the signature of terrestrial planet formation around the Sun. [Methods]. We acquired high-resolution (R=110,000), high S/N (~300) ESO/VLT UVES spectra of sever…
Abridged: Getting a better understanding of the evolution and nucleosynthetic yields of the most metal-poor stars (appr. Z<=10^-5) is critical because they are part of the big picture of the history of the primitive Universe. Yet many of the remaining unknowns of stellar evolution lie in the birth, life, and death of these objects. We review stellar evolution of intermediate-mass (IMS) Z<=10-5 models existing in the literature, with a focus on the problem of their final fates. The depth and efficiency of mixing episodes are critical to determine the mass limits for the formation of electron-ca…
Large dust grains can fluctuate dramatically in their local density, relative to gas, in neutral, turbulent disks. Small, high-redshift galaxies (before reionization) represent ideal environments for this process. We show via simple arguments and simulations that order-of-magnitude fluctuations are expected in local abundances of large grains under these conditions. This can have important consequences for star formation and stellar abundances in extremely metal-poor stars. Low-mass stars could form in dust-enhanced regions almost immediately after some dust forms, even if the galaxy-average m…
The formation and evolution of light elements in the Universe act as important cosmological constraints. It has long been assumed that the oldest stars of the Galaxy display the primordial Li abundance in their outer layers, although studies of stellar physics have proven that this abundance must have decreased with time. The primordial Li abundance deduced from the observations of the cosmic background is larger than the maximum observed in these stars. Recent observations have given evidence of a large Li abundance dispersion in very metal-poor stars. Many of these stars are carbon-rich, the…
Our main goals are to get a deeper insight into the evolution and final fates of intermediate-mass, extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars. We also aim to investigate their C, N, and O yields. Using the Monash University Stellar Evolution code we computed and analysed the evolution of stars of metallicity Z = 10^-5 and masses between 4 and 9 M_sun, from their main sequence until the late thermally pulsing (super) asymptotic giant branch, TP-(S)AGB phase. Our model stars experience a strong C, N, and O envelope enrichment either due to the second dredge-up, the dredge-out phenomenon, or the third dre…
In this work we present a study of binary systems in a metal-poor sample of solar type stars. The stars analyzed were rejected from two planet search samples because they were found to be binaries. Using available radial velocity and Hipparcos astrometric data, we apply different methods to find, for every binary system, a possible range of solutions for the mass of the companion and its orbital period. In one case we find that the solution depends on the Hipparcos data used: the old and new reductions give different results. Some candidate low-mass companions are found, including some close t…
We investigate age and metallicity distributions of bright globular clusters (GCs) in the candidate intermediate-age early-type galaxies NGC 3610, NGC 584 and NGC 3377 using a combination of new Gemini/NIRI K'-band imaging and existing optical V,I photometry from HST data. The V-I vs I-K' colour-colour diagram is found to break the age-metallicity degeneracy present in optical colours, as I-K' primarily measures a populations' metallicity and is relatively insensitive, unlike optical spectroscopy, to the effect of hot horizontal branch (HB) stars, known to be present in massive old GCs. We der…
We report on the observations of two ultra metal-poor (UMP) stars with [Fe/H]~-4.0 including one new discovery. The two stars are studied in the on-going and quite efficient project to search for extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars with LAMOST and Subaru. Detailed abundances or upper limits of abundances have been derived for 15 elements from Li to Eu based on high-resolution spectra obtained with Subaru/HDS. The abundance patterns of both UMP stars are consistent with the "normal-population" among the low-metallicity stars. Both of the two program stars show carbon-enhancement without any excess…
The star EPIC 210894022 has been identified from a light curve acquired through the K2 space mission as possibly orbited by a transiting planet. Our aim is to confirm the planetary nature of the object and derive its fundamental parameters. We combine the K2 photometry with reconnaissance spectroscopy and radial velocity (RV) measurements obtained using three separate telescope and spectrograph combinations. The spectroscopic synthesis package SME has been used to derive the stellar photospheric parameters that were used as input to various stellar evolutionary tracks in order to derive the pa…
The study of the long-dead early generations of massive stars is crucial in order to obtain a complete picture of the chemical evolution of the Universe, hence the origin of the elements. The nature of these stars can be inferred indirectly by investigating the origin of low-mass metal-poor stars observed in our Galaxy, some of which are almost as old as the Universe. The peculiar extremely iron-poor Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars, whose precise origin is still debated, are thought to have formed with the material ejected by only one or very few previous massive stars. The main aim of…
