The present work aims to study the tonal and broadband noise associated with a supersonic planar jet impinging on a flat plate. Five different cases are considered corresponding to different plate distance and angle of impingement. The near-field noise is analyzed using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). For this, we employ a low dispersive and dissipative Finite Volume solver using AUSM for inviscid fluxes and third order Runge-Kutta method for temporal discretization. The far-field noise is calculated using a hybrid approach in which the acoustic sources and mean flow are provided by the fluid solver while the far-field acoustic pressure is calculated by an acoustic solver. It solves Acoustic Perturbation Equations using a spectral/hp element method with a Discontinuous Galerkin projection. The present work highlights many important aspects of impinging jets. Firstly, the far-field sound with the effect of non-uniform base-fields is obtained which is important as the far-field acoustic pressure in most of the literature is reported either without any basefields or by the application of uniform base-fields. Secondly, a correlation between the different modes of oscillations of the impinging jet and the production of impinging tones is studied using Modal Decomposition techniques. This analysis also sheds some light on the number of concurrent cycles for different nozzle to plate distance. Lastly, the relation between the phase lag term and the distance between the plate and the nozzle exit is highlighted using a vortex tracking method. This observation can serve to provide a better understanding of the sound generation process.
Impinging compressible jets may cause deafness and material fatigue due to immensely loud tonal noise. It is generally accepted that a feedback mechanism similar to the screech feedback loop is responsible for impinging tones. The close of the loop remained unclear. One hypothesis hold up in the literature explains the emanated sound with the direct interaction of vortices and the wall. Other explanations name the standoff shock oscillations as the origin of the tones. Using direct numerical simulations (DNS) we were able to identify the source mechanism for under-expanded impinging jets with …
This investigation aims to assess the effect of different types of actuator forcing on the feedback loop of an under-expanded Mach 1.27 planar impinging jet using a resolvent framework. To this end, we employ a Large Eddy Simulation database as a truth model. The time and spanwise-averaged mean flow is taken as an input to global stability and resolvent analyses with the purpose of examining both the intrinsic instability and input-output characteristics. The results show that the inherent instability and primary energy amplification are attributed to the Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability. Mo…
The impinging shock of varying strengths on the free shear layer in a confined supersonic cavity flow is studied numerically using the detached-eddy simulation. The resulting spatiotemporal variations are analyzed between the different cases using unsteady statistics, $x-t$ diagrams, spectral analysis, and modal decomposition. A cavity of length to depth ratio $[L/D]=2$ at a freestream Mach number of $M_\infty = 1.71$ is considered to be in a confined passage. Impinging shock strength is controlled by changing the ramp angle ($θ$) on the top-wall. The static pressure ratio across the impinging…
In this fluid dynamics video, results from high fidelity numerical simulations are presented, which have been carried out to study the flow and droplet dynamics of liquid sheets formed by two impinging jets. A three-dimensional Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method with adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) based on octree meshes [1] is used to simulate the various flow patterns associated with impinging jets, secondary breakup and binary collision of droplets. In addition to AMR, a thickness based refinement algorithm is also developed and implemented to efficiently resolve the various scales of surface tens…
Direct numerical simulations of sub- and supersonic impinging jets with Reynolds numbers of 3300 and 8000 are carried out to analyse their statistical properties. The influence of the parameters Mach number, Reynolds number and ambient temperature on the mean velocity and temperature fields are studied. For the compressible subsonic cold impinging jets into a heated environment, different Reynolds analogies are assesses. It is shown, that the (original) Reynolds analogy as well as the Chilton Colburn analogy are in good agreement with the DNS data outside the impinging area. The generalised Re…
Velocity profiles and wall shear stress values in the wall jet region of planar underexpanded impinging jets are parameterized based on nozzle parameters (stand-off height, jet hydraulic diameter, and nozzle pressure ratio). Computational fluid dynamics is used to calculate the velocity fields of impinging jets with height-to-diameter ratios in the range of 15 to 30 and nozzle pressure ratio in the range of 1.2 to 3.0. The wall jet has an incomplete self-similar profile with a typical triple-layer structure as in traditional wall jets. The effects of compressibility are found to be insignifica…
The accompanying fluid dynamics videos visualize the temporal evolution of shock structures and sound waves in and around an under-expanded jet that is impinging on a rigid surface at varying pressure ratios. The recordings were obtained at frame rates of 500 kHz to 1 Mhz using a novel pulsed illumination source based on a high power light emitting diode (LED) which is operated in pulsed current mode synchronized to the camera frame rate.
In some chemical processes, the formation of the counter flow in the colliding-jets regime is the most promising phenomenon if there is a need of fast quenching of an obtained product [1]. Particularly this method can be used to control disperse and phase composition of the final product. The complex calculation and experimental research of the counter collision and mixing of the circular argon jet and aluminum steams at 2000 K, and a relative cold argon jet (1000 K) is presented in [2]. It is shown there that the counter quenching regime enables to control particles grow owing to the flow dil…
Fluid flow and convective heat transfer in rotor-stator configurations, which are of great importance in different engineering applications, are treated in details in this review. The review focuses on convective heat transfer in predominantly outward air flow in the rotor-stator geometries with and without impinging jets and incorporates two main parts, namely, experimental/theoretical methodologies and geometries/results. Experimental methodologies include naphthalene sublimation techniques, steady state (thin layer) and transient (thermochromic liquid crystals) thermal measurements, thermoc…
This article shows the importance of flow compressibility on the heat transfer in confined impinging jets, and how it is driven by both the Mach number and the wall heat-flux. Hence, we present a collection of cases at several Mach numbers with different heat-flux values applied at the impingement wall. The wall temperature scales linearly with the imposed heat-flux and the adiabatic wall temperature is found to be purely governed by the flow compression. Especially for high heat-flux values, the non-constant wall temperature induces considerable differences in the thermal conductivity of the …
High speed impinging jets have been the focus of several studies owing to their practical application and resonance dominated flow-field. The current study focuses on the identification and visualization of the resonant modes at certain critical impingement heights for a Mach 1.5 normally impinging jet. These modes are associated with high amplitude, discrete peaks in the power spectra and can be identified as having either axisymmetric or azimuthal modes. Their visualization is accomplished through phase-locked Schlieren imaging and fast-response pressure sensitive paint (PC-PSP) applied to t…
In an impingement atomizer, a thin sheet of liquid generates by impinging two identical jets. The thickness is one of the most crucial parameters in quantifying the spray characteristics for which several non-unique solutions have been acquired theoretically, so far. Among all, three theoretical solutions presented by Hasson and Peck, Ranz, and Miller are the most reliable expressions in terms of precision. Apparently, all these distinctive solutions cannot be physical simultaneously. However, a theoretical satisfactory explanation for having various non-unique solutions has not been presented…
In Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies composed of the coupling of different simulations, the uncertainty in one stage may be propagated to the following stage and affect the accuracy of the prediction. In this paper, a framework for uncertainty quantification is applied to the two-step simulation of the mechanical design of a swirling jet flow generated by a rotating pipe (\textit{Simulation 1}) impinging on a flat plate to provide convective heat transfer (\textit{Simulation 2}). The first approach is the Stochastic Collocation Method (SCM) with Clenshaw-Curtis sparse grids. The concl…
When a jet of gas impinges vertically on a granular bed and forms a crater, the grains may be moved by several different mechanisms: viscous erosion, diffused gas eruption, bearing capacity failure, and/or diffusion-driven shearing. The relative importance of these mechanisms depends upon the flow regime of the gas, the mechanical state of the granular material, and other physical parameters. Here we report research in two specific regimes: viscous erosion forming scour holes as a function of particle size and gravity; and bearing capacity failure forming deep transient craters as a function o…
We model the resonance mechanism underpinning generation of A1 and A2 screech tones in an under-expanded supersonic jet. Starting from the resonance model recently proposed by \cite{mancinelli2019screech}, where the upstream-travelling wave is a neutrally-stable guided jet mode, we here present a more complete linear-stability-based model for screech prediction. We study temperature and shear-layer thickness effects and show that, in order to accurately describe the experimental data, the effect of the finite thickness of the shear layer must be incorporated in the jet-dynamics model. We then …
We present a two-point model to investigate the underlying source mechanisms for broadband shock-associated noise (BBSAN) in shock-containing supersonic jets. In the model presented, the generation of BBSAN is assumed to arise from the non-linear interaction between downstream-propagating coherent structures with the quasi-periodic shock cells in the jet plume. The turbulent perturbations are represented as axially-extended wavepackets and the shock cells are modelled as a set of stationary waveguide modes. Unlike previous BBSAN models, the physical parameters describing the hydrodynamic compo…
Noise measurements of heated axisymmetric jets at fixed supersonic acoustic Mach number indicate that the acoustic spectrum reduces when the temperature ratio increases. The `spectral quietening' effect has been observed both experimentally and computationally using Large Eddy Simulations (LES). It was explained by Afsar {\it et al}. (M. Z. Afsar and M. E. Goldstein $\&$ A. M. Fagan AIAAJ., Vol. 49, p. 2522, 2011) through the cancellation introduced by enthalpy flux/momentum flux coupling term using the generalized acoustic analogy formulation. But the parallel flow assumption is known to give…
In the classical survey (Chapter 16.2, {\it Mathematics in industrial problem}, Vol. 24, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1989), A. Friedman proposed an open problem on the collision of two incompressible jets emerging from two axially symmetric nozzles. In this paper, we concerned with the mathematical theory on this collision problem, and establish the well-posedness theory on hydrodynamic impinging outgoing jets issuing from two coaxial axially symmetric nozzles. More precisely, we showed that for any given mass fluxes $M_1>0$ and $M_2<0$ in two nozzles respectively, that there exists an incompre…
A combined analytical and numerical study is conducted to investigate the asymmetric cap-shock non-uniform Mach Reflection (csMR) phenomenon outside of an over-expanded supersonic jet. Prior analytical works have only considered the wedge-induced steady symmetric and asymmetric Mach reflection (MR) configurations, as well as symmetric MR in an open jet. However, there is another structure occurring in nozzle flow fields known as a non-uniformity induced cap-shock pattern. We derive a new analytical model to predict the wave structure of the asymmetric csMR in the absence of internal shocks by …

In this paper, we report experimental investigation to improve the shape of a supersonic nozzle for rarefied flows to generate high axial density at extended distances from the nozzle. The reported work is significant for molecular jet/beam applications that require high center-line density and narrow jet profile. We investigate a parabolic nozzle whose profile is generated using the virtual source model of free expansion and compare its performance with a set of conical nozzles having different cone angles using simulations as well as experiments. All nozzles are made by additive manufacturin…
A novel jet-stirred combustion chamber is designed to study turbulent premixed flames. In the new approach, multiple impinging turbulent jets are used to stir the mixture. It is well known that pair of counterflowing turbulent jets produces nearly a constant intensity along the jet axes. In this study, different numbers of impinging jets in various configurations are used to produce isotropic turbulence intensity. FLUENT simulations have been conducted to assess the viability of the proposed chamber. In order to be able to compare different configurations, three different non dimensional indic…
Several physical mechanisms are involved in excavating granular materials beneath a vertical jet of gas. These occur, for example, beneath the exhaust plume of a rocket landing on the soil of the Moon or Mars. A series of experiments and simulations have been performed to provide a detailed view of the complex gas/soil interactions. Measurements have also been taken from the Apollo lunar landing videos and from photographs of the resulting terrain, and these help to demonstrate how the interactions extrapolate into the lunar environment. It is important to understand these processes at a funda…
In present work, we report an experimental setup that has been developed to characterize highly under-expanded helium and nitrogen jets confined in a vacuum chamber. The evolution of Zone of Silence (ZOS) is studied and found that experimentally measured ZOS for helium and nitrogen jets are in agreement with empirical relation and mathematical model. The velocity of the jet inside ZOS is measured using a developed time of flight (TOF) probe without using a skimmer. We are able to measures the velocity of the gas jet itself compared to a skimmer-based method which measures the velocity of gas t…

Current design constraints have encouraged the studies of aeroacoustics fields around compressible jet flows. The present work addresses the numerical study of subgrid scale modeling for unsteady turbulent jet flows as a preliminary step for future aeroacoustic analyses of main engine rocket plumes. An in-house large eddy simulation (LES) tool is developed in order to reproduce high fidelity results of compressible jet flows. In the present study, perfectly expanded jets are considered because the authors want to emphasize the effects of the jet mixing phenomena. The large eddy simulation form…
Mixing characteristics of a supersonic jet influenced by a Downstream Microjet Fluidic Injection (DMFI) system are numerically investigated. The DMFI system is built on the observation of a previous experimental study that utilized transverse fluidic injection from four equally spaced injection ports placed on an injection tube at a distance downstream of a 1.5 Mach number nozzle. The measurements from these previous experiments demonstrated thickening and mixing enhancement of the jet shear layer as a result of fluidic injection. The current numerical study examines the underlying physics of …
Supersonic gas jets produced by converging-diverging (C-D) nozzles are commonly used as targets for laser-plasma acceleration (LPA) experiments. A major point of interest for these targets is the gas density at the region of interaction where the laser ionizes the gas plume to create a plasma, providing the acceleration structure. Tuning the density profiles at this interaction region is crucial to LPA optimization. A "flat-top" density profile is desired at this line of interaction to control laser propagation and high energy electron acceleration, while a short high-density profile is often …
The present work is concerned with a study of large eddy simulations (LES) of unsteady turbulent jet flows. In particular, the present analysis is focused on the effects of the subgrid-scale modeling used when a second-order spatial discretization methodology is employed for the numerical simulations. The present effort addresses perfectly expanded supersonic jets, because the authors want to emphasize the effects of the jet mixing phenomena. The LES formulation is discretized using the finite difference approach, after the equations are rewritten in a generalized coordinate system. Both space…
Shocks in supersonic flows offer both a high-density and sharp density gradients that can be used, for instance, for gradient injection in laser-plasma accelerators. We report on a parametric study of oblique shocks created by inserting a straight axisymmetric section at the end of a supersonic "de Laval" nozzle. The impact of different parameters such as throat diameter and straight section length is studied through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Experimental characterizations of a shocked nozzle are compared to CFD simulations and found to be in good agreement. We then introd…
Motivated by the aero-acoustic feedback loop phenomenon in high speed free jets and impinging jets, a thorough examination of a POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition)-Galerkin method to determine the average convection velocity of coherent structures in the shear layer is presented in this paper. The technique is shown to be applicable to both time resolved as well as time unresolved data, if the data set meets certain requirements. Using a detailed sensitivity analysis on a synthetic data set, a quantitative estimate on the required time resolution for the technique has been found, which can b…
Response modes computed via linear resolvent analysis of a turbulent mean-flow field have been shown to qualitatively capture characteristics of the observed turbulent coherent structures in both wall-bounded and free shear flows. To make such resolvent models predictive, the nonlinear forcing term must be closed. Strategies to do so include imposing self-consistent sets of triadic interactions, proposing various source models, or through turbulence modelling. For the latter, several investigators have proposed using the mean-field eddy viscosity acting linearly on the fluctuation field. In th…
The turbulent dynamo may explain the origin of cosmic magnetism. While the exponential amplification of magnetic fields has been studied for incompressible gases, little is known about dynamo action in highly-compressible, supersonic plasmas, such as the interstellar medium of galaxies and the early Universe. Here we perform the first quantitative comparison of theoretical models of the dynamo growth rate and saturation level with three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations of supersonic turbulence with grid resolutions of up to 1024^3 cells. We obtain numerical convergence and find th…
