The Sinc-Nyström method is a high-order numerical method based on Sinc basis functions for discretizing evolutionary differential equations in time. But in this method we have to solve all the time steps in one-shot (i.e. all-at-once), which results in a large-scale nonsymmetric dense system that is expensive to handle. In this paper, we propose and analyze preconditioner for such dense system arising from both the parabolic and hyperbolic PDEs. The proposed preconditioner is a low-rank perturbation of the original matrix and has two advantages. First, we show that the eigenvalues of the preconditioned system are highly clustered with some uniform bounds which are independent of the mesh parameters. Second, the preconditioner can be used parallel for all the Sinc time points via a block diagonalization procedure. Such a parallel potential owes to the fact that the eigenvector matrix of the diagonalization is well conditioned. In particular, we show that the condition number of the eigenvector matrix only mildly grows as the number of Sinc time points increases, and thus the roundoff error arising from the diagonalization procedure is controllable. The effectiveness of our proposed PinT preconditioners is verified by the observed mesh-independent convergence rates of the preconditioned GMRES in reported numerical examples.
Randomized methods are becoming increasingly popular in numerical linear algebra. However, few attempts have been made to use them in developing preconditioners. Our interest lies in solving large-scale sparse symmetric positive definite linear systems of equations where the system matrix is preordered to doubly bordered block diagonal form (for example, using a nested dissection ordering). We investigate the use of randomized methods to construct high quality preconditioners. In particular, we propose a new and efficient approach that employs Nyström's method for computing low rank approximat…
We generalize previous work by Mardal, Nilssen, and Staff (2007, SIAM J. Sci. Comp. v. 29, pp. 361-375) and Rana, Howle, Long, Meek, and Milestone (2021, SIAM J. Sci. Comp. v. 43, p. 475-495) on order-optimal preconditioners for parabolic PDEs to a larger class of differential equations and methods. The problems considered are those of the forms $u_{t}=-\mathcal{K}u+g$ and $u_{tt}=-\mathcal{K}u+g$, where the operator $\mathcal{K}$ is defined by $\mathcal{K}u:=-\nabla\cdot\left(α\nabla u\right)+βu$ and the functions $α$ and $β$ are restricted so that $α>0$, and $β\ge0$. The methods considered a…
This paper introduces the Nyström PCG algorithm for solving a symmetric positive-definite linear system. The algorithm applies the randomized Nyström method to form a low-rank approximation of the matrix, which leads to an efficient preconditioner that can be deployed with the conjugate gradient algorithm. Theoretical analysis shows that preconditioned system has constant condition number as soon as the rank of the approximation is comparable with the number of effective degrees of freedom in the matrix. The paper also develops adaptive methods that provably achieve similar performance without…
A Sinc-collocation method has been proposed by Stenger, and he also gave theoretical analysis of the method in the case of a `scalar' equation. This paper extends the theoretical results to the case of a `system' of equations. Furthermore, this paper proposes more efficient method by replacing the variable transformation employed in Stenger's method. The efficiency is confirmed by both of theoretical analysis and numerical experiments. In addition to the existing and newly-proposed Sinc-collocation methods, this paper also gives similar theoretical results for Sinc-Nyström methods proposed by …
A Sinc-Nyström method for Volterra integro-differential equations was developed by Zarebnia in 2010. The method is quite efficient in the sense that exponential convergence can be obtained even if the given problem has endpoint singularity. However, its exponential convergence has not been proved theoretically. In addition, to implement the method, the regularity of the solution is required, although the solution is an unknown function in practice. This paper reinforces the method by presenting two theoretical results: 1) the regularity of the solution is analyzed, and 2) its convergence rate …
Time-harmonic solutions to the wave equation can be computed in the frequency or in the time domain. In the frequency domain, one solves a discretized Helmholtz equation, while in the time domain, the periodic solutions to a discretized wave equation are sought, e.g. by simulating for a long time with a time-harmonic forcing term. Disadvantages of the time-domain method are that the solutions are affected by temporal discretization errors and that the spatial discretization cannot be freely chosen, since it is inherited from the time-domain scheme. In this work we address these issues. Given a…
We propose a preconditioner for the Helmholtz exterior problems on multi-screens. For this, we combine quotient-space BEM and operator preconditioning. For a class of multi-screens (which we dub \emph{type A} multi-screens), we show that this approach leads to block diagonal Calderón preconditioners and results in a spectral condition number that grows only logarithmically with $h$, just as in the case of simple screens. Since the resulting scheme contains many more DoFs than strictly required, we also present strategies to remove almost all redundancy without significant loss of effectiveness…
Numerical climate- and weather-prediction requires the fast solution of the equations of fluid dynamics. Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretisations have several advantageous properties. They can be used for arbitrary domains and support a structured data layout, which is important on modern chip architectures. For smooth solutions, higher order approximations can be particularly efficient since errors decrease exponentially in the polynomial degree. Due to the wide separation of timescales in atmospheric dynamics, semi-implicit time integrators are highly efficient, since the implicit treatme…
Preconditioning of a linear system obtained from spectral discretization of time-dependent PDEs often results in a full matrix which is expensive to compute and store specially when the problem size increases. A matrix-free implementation is usually applied to resolve this issue. In this framework, preconditioning is typically challenging since the entries of the matrix are not explicitly available. In this short note, we propose a statistical approach to gradually create a preconditioner matrix by collecting the information obtained from matrix-vector product in the Arnoldi loop of an unpreco…
Due to the wide separation of time scales in geophysical fluid dynamics, semi-implicit time integrators are commonly used in operational atmospheric forecast models. They guarantee the stable treatment of fast (acoustic and gravity) waves, while not suffering from severe restrictions on the timestep size. To propagate the state of the atmosphere forward in time, a non-linear equation for the prognostic variables has to be solved at every timestep. Since the nonlinearity is typically weak, this is done with a small number of Newton- or Picard- iterations, which in turn require the efficient sol…

An accurate residual--time (AccuRT) restarting for computing matrix exponential actions of nonsymmetric matrices by the shift-and-invert (SAI) Krylov subspace method is proposed. The proposed restarting method is an extension of the recently proposed RT (residual--time) restarting and it is designed to avoid a possible accuracy loss in the conventional RT restarting. An expensive part of the SAI Krylov method is solution of linear systems with the shifted matrix. Since the AccuRT algorithm adjusts the shift value, we discuss how the proposed restarting can be implemented with just a single LU~…
We introduce the tensor numerical method for solution of the $d$-dimensional optimal control problems with fractional Laplacian type operators in constraints discretized on large $n^{\otimes d}$ tensor-product Cartesian grids. The approach is based on the rank-structured approximation of the matrix valued functions of the corresponding fractional finite difference Laplacian. We solve the equation for the control function, where the system matrix includes the sum of the fractional $d$-dimensional Laplacian and its inverse. The matrix valued functions of discrete Laplace operator on a tensor gri…
