The H1 photonic crystal cavity supports two degenerate dipole modes of orthogonal linear polarization which could give rise to circularly polarized fields when driven with a $π$/$2$ phase difference. However, fabrication errors tend to break the symmetry of the cavity which lifts the degeneracy of the modes, rendering the cavity unsuitable for supporting circular polarization. We demonstrate numerically, a scheme that induces chirality in the cavity modes, thereby achieving a cavity that supports intrinsic circular polarization. By selectively modifying two air holes around the cavity, the dipole modes could interact via asymmetric coherent backscattering which is a non-Hermitian process. With suitable air hole parameters, the cavity modes approach the exceptional point, coalescing in frequencies and linewidths as well as giving rise to significant circular polarization close to unity. The handedness of the chirality can be selected depending on the choice of the modified air holes. Our results highlight the prospect of using the H1 photonic crystal cavity for chiral-light matter coupling in applications such as valleytronics, spin-photon interfaces and the generation of single photons with well-defined spins.
The parity-time symmetry (PT symmetry) breaking phenomenon is investigated in a coupled nanobeam cavity system. An exceptional point is observed during the tuning of the relation of the gain/loss and coupling strength of the closely placed nanobeam pairs. The PT symmetry concept can be applied to realize unidirectional light propagation and single mode operation lasers, which may allow for a new way to harness the optical signal in photonic integrated circuits. Otherwise, operating at this particular exceptional point, sensitivity of tiny perturbation detection can be enhanced greatly compared…
We derive analytical formulas quantifying radiative emission from subwavelength emitters embedded in triply resonant nonlinear $χ^{(2)}$ cavities supporting exceptional points (EP) made of dark and leaky modes. We show that the up-converted radiation rate in such a system can be greatly enhanced---by up to two orders of magnitude---compared to typical Purcell factors achievable in non-degenerate cavities, for both monochromatic and broadband emitters. We provide a proof-of-concept demonstration by studying an inverse-designed 2D photonic-crystal slab that supports an EP formed out of a Dirac c…
We introduce a class of unidirectional lasing modes associated with the frozen mode regime of non-reciprocal slow-wave structures. Such asymmetric modes can only exist in cavities with broken time-reversal and space inversion symmetries. Their lasing frequency coincides with a spectral stationary inflection point of the underlying passive structure and is virtually independent of its size. These unidirectional lasers can be indispensable components of photonic integrated circuitry.
We investigate the rich physics of photonic molecule lasers using a non-Hermitian dimer model. We show that several interesting features, predicted recently using a rigorous steady state ab-initio laser theory (SALT), can be captured by this toy model. In particular, we demonstrate the central role played by exceptional points in both pump-selective lasing and laser self-terminations phenomena. Due to its transparent mathematical structure, our model provides a lucid understanding for how different physical parameters (optical loss, modal coupling between microcavities and pump profiles) affec…
In a non-Hermitian optical system with loss and gain, an exceptional point (EP) will arise under specific parameters where the eigenvalues and eigenstates exhibit simultaneous coalescence. Here we report a dynamical switching of lasing behavior in a non-Hermitian system composed of coupled microcavities by modulating the EPs. Utilizing the effect of gain, loss and coupling on the eigenstates of coupled microcavities, the evolution path of the eigenvalues related to the laser emission characteristics can be modulated. As a result, the lasing emission property of the coupled cavities exhibits an…
The optical resonance problem is similar to but different from time-steady Schrödinger equation. One big challenge is that the eigenfunctions in resonance problem is exponentially growing. We give physical explanation to this boundary condition and introduce perfectly matched layer (PML) method to transform eigenfunctions from exponential-growth to exponential-decay. Based on the complex stretching technique, we construct a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for the optical resonance problem. We successfully validate the effectiveness of the Hamiltonian by calculate its eigenvalues in the circular cavi…
We investigate a photonic device consisting of two coupled optical cavities possessing Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, TE-TM splitting, and linear polarisation splitting that opens a tuneable energy gap at the diabolic points of the photon dispersion; giving rise to an actively addressable local Berry curvature. The proposed architecture stems from recent advancements in the design of artificial photonic gauge fields in liquid crystal cavities [K. Rechcińska et al., Science 366, 727 (2019)]. Our study opens new perspectives for topological photonics, room-temperature spinoptronics, and…
Dynamically encircling an exceptional point (EP) in parity-time (PT) symmetric systems shows an interesting chiral dynamics, leading to asymmetric mode switching in which the output modes are different when the encircling direction is reversed. Here we show that the dynamical encircling of an EP in anti-PT-symmetric systems can also result in chiral dynamics if the starting/end point lies in the PT-broken phase, in contrast to PT-symmetric systems where chiral dynamics emerges if the starting/end point lies in the PT-unbroken phase. For many applications, such as signal processing using wavegu…
Controlling gain and loss of coupled optical cavities can induce non-Hermitian degeneracies of eigenstates, called exceptional points (EPs). Various unconventional phenomena around EPs have been reported, and expected to incorporate extra functionalities into photonic devices. The eigenmode exactly under the EP degeneracy is also predicted to exhibit enhanced radiation. However, such responses have yet to be observed in on-chip lasers, because of both the limited controllability of their gain and loss and the lifting of degeneracy by pump-induced cavity detuning. Here, we report the first non-…
Exceptional point (EP) degeneracies in coupled cavities with gain and loss provide on-chip photonic devices with unconventional features and performance. However, such systems with realistic structures often miss the exact EPs even in simulation, and the mechanism of this EP disruption has yet to be thoroughly identified. Here, we extend the coupled-mode theory of one-dimensional non-Hermitian resonator arrays to study the effects of the imaginary part of the inter-cavity coupling, which is a second-order term and attributed to material amplification, absorption, and radiation. By taking an ap…
We present a systematic analysis of the stationary regimes of nonlinear parity-time(PT) symmetric laser composed of two coupled fiber cavities. We find that power-dependent nonlinear phase shifters broaden regions of existence of both PT-symmetric and PT-broken modes, and can facilitate transitions between modes of different types. We show the existence of non-stationary regimes and demonstrate an ambiguity of the transition process for some of the unstable states. We also identify the presence of higher-order stationary modes, which return to the initial state periodically after a certain num…
We study theoretically the dissipative Bose-Hubbard model describing array of tunneling-coupled cavities with non-conservative photon-photon interaction. Our calculation of the complex energy spectrum for the photon pairs reveals exceptional points where the two-photon states bound by nonlinear dissipation are formed. This improves fundamental understanding of the interplay of non-Hermiticity and interactions in the quantum structures and can be potentially used for on-demand nonlinear light generation in photonic lattices.
We propose two non-Hermitian arrays consisting of $N=2l+1$ waveguides and exhibiting parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) or anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry for investigating light transfer dynamics based on $N$th-order exceptional points (EPs). The $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric array supports two $N$th-order EPs separating an unbroken and a broken phase with real and imaginary eignvalues, respectively. Light transfer dynamics in this array exhibits radically different behaviors, i.e. a unidirectional oscillation behavior in the unbroken phase, an edge-towards localization behavior in the broken phase, and a …
Propagation Maps, Maradona Exceptional Points, and Pele Singularities in Anisotropic, Tellegen, Chiral, Moving-Medium, Omega and Other Isotropy-Broken Materials
Planar microcavities allow the control and manipulation of spin-polarization, manifested in phenomena like the optical spin Hall effect due to the intrinsic polarization mode splitting. Here, we study a transparent microcavity with broken rotational symmetry, realized by aligning the optical axis of a uniaxial cavity material in the cavity plane. We demonstrate that the in-plane optical anisotropy gives rise to exceptional points in the dispersion relation, which occur pair-wise, are circularly polarized, and are cores of polarization vortices. These exceptional points are a result of the non-…
A laser consisting of two independently-pumped resonators can exhibit mode bifurcations that evolve out of the exceptional points (EPs) of the linear system at threshold. The EPs are non-Hermitian degeneracies occurring at the parity/time-reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry breaking points of the threshold system. Above threshold, the EPs become bifurcations of the nonlinear zero-detuned laser modes, which can be most easily observed by making the gain saturation intensities in the two resonators substantially different. Small pump variations can then switch abruptly between different laser beh…
We propose an optomechanical nano-gravimeter based on exceptional points. The system is a coupled cavity optomechanical system, in which the gain and loss are applied by driving the cavities with a blue detuned and red detuned electromagnetic field, respectively. When the gain and loss reach a balance, the system will show the degeneracy of exceptional points, and any perturbation will cause an eigenfrequencies split, which is proportional to the square root of the perturbation strength. Compared with the traditional optomechanical sensors, the sensitivity is greatly enhanced. This work paves …
$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is a unique platform for light manipulation and versatile use in unidirectional invisibility, lasing, sensing, etc. Broken and unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric states in non-Hermitian open systems are described by scattering matrices. A multilayer structure, as a simplest example of the open system, has no certain definition of the scattering matrix, since the output ports can be permuted. The uncertainty in definition of the exceptional points bordering $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-broken states poses an important problem, because the exception…
Recently a type of robust exceptional points was found that is insensitive to the coupling disorder in the bulk. Here we show that a disparity emerges when the number of coupled cavities in this one-dimensional array changes from even to odd. The robust exceptional point only exists in the former case, whereas the location of the exceptional point in the latter depends inversely on the size of the cavity array and is subjected to coupling disorder in the bulk. We further show that the exceptional points in these two cases are second and third order, respectively. We elucidate the origin of the…
Exceptional points are a ubiquitous concept widely present in driven-dissipative coupled systems described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. It is characterized by the degeneracy of the Hamiltonian's eigenvalues and coalescence of corresponding eigenvectors. Recent developments demonstrated that exceptional points can play an important role in photonics. However, to date, exceptional points have been extensively examined in the systems supporting only a few optical modes, thereby leaving the observation of collective (multimode) effects outside of the scope of study. In the present paper, we ana…
The interaction between light and mechanical vibrations in a cavity is often exploited to produce higher order sidebands (HOS) /combs, which are used in optical communication networks, spectroscopy, and others. Although a considerable study of optomechanically induced HOS has been done, its proper control and manipulation using only continuous wave (CW) laser drive are still to be explored. Here, we employed mechanical Parity-Time (PT) Symmetric structure with optically induced gain and loss. It has allowed us to manipulate the flow of mechanical energies (phonons) between the cavities, which …
Parity-time (PT) symmetric optical sensors operating around exceptional points have recently gained much attraction, offering an unparalleled high sensitivity in measuring small perturbations. In the past, most of the PT-symmetric sensors have been based on tracking the mode-splitting that arises due to a perturbation-induced change in coupling strength between two subcavities of the PT-symmetric system. We design a linear fiber Fabry-Pérot and coupled cavities sensor, tailored to operate in the broken PT-symmetric region. We explore a new sensing metric-that is, the mode's linewidth change as…
Optically-coupled semiconductor laser arrays are described by coupled rate equations. The coupled mode equations and carrier densities are included in the analysis, which inherently incorporate the carrier-induced nonlinearities including spatial hole burning and amplitude-phase coupling. We solve the steady-state coupled rate equations and consider the cavity frequency detuning and the individual laser pump rates as the experimentally controlled variables. We show that the carrier-induced nonlinearities play a critical role in the mode control, and we identify gain contrast induced by cavity …
We present a transmission line theory of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) in coupled-mode guiding structures, i.e., a theory that illustrates the characteristics of coupled electromagnetic modes under a special dispersion degeneracy condition, yet unexplored in the contest of gain and loss. We demonstrate the concept of Parity-Time ($\cal{PT}$)-symmetry in coupled uniform waveguides with balanced and symmetric gain and loss and how this condition is associated with a second order EPD. We show that by introducing gain into naturally lossy structures provides for the conditions whereby exc…
We consider particle-hole symmetric photonic graphene with balanced gain and loss. We show that edge states with purely imaginary eigenvalues appear along the zigzag edge. We propose an idea that these edge states are protected by spontaneously broken particle-hole symmetry. We discuss that the edge states are topological in the sense that the exceptional rings are robust against symmetry protecting disorder. If the disorder is too strong to restore the spontaneously broken particle-hole symmetry, then such protection of the edge states is lost.
Exceptional points, that are spectral degeneracies in the parameter space of non-Hermitian systems, have evoked a massive interest in the optical domain owing to their striking consequences on optical behavior of commonly known systems. Through careful engineering of gain and loss, exceptional points have been demonstrated in a variety of photonic systems ranging from optical fibers to chaotic cavities, exhibiting extra-ordinary phenomena and augmented functionalities. However, in the domain of disordered systems, there are still no realizations of exceptional points even though mode-coupling …
Parity-time (PT) symmetric systems have two distinguished phases, e.g., one with real energy eigenvalues and the other with complex conjugate eigenvalues. To enter one phase from the other, it is believed that the system must pass through an exceptional point, which is a non-Hermitian degenerate point with coalesced eigenvalues and eigenvectors. In this letter we reveal an anomalous PT transition that takes place away from an exceptional point in a nonlinear system: as the nonlinearity increases, the original linear system evolves along two distinct PT-symmetric trajectories, each of which can…
Asymmetric microcavities supporting Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) are of great significance for on-chip optical information processing. We define asymmetric microcavities on topologically curved surfaces, where the geodesic light trajectories completely reconstruct the cavity mode features. The quality factors of the lossy chaotic and island modes in flat cavities can be increased by up to ~200 times by the space curvature. Strong and weak coupling between modes of very different origins occur when the space curvature brings them into resonance, leading to a fine tailoring of the cavity phot…
Optomechanical cavities have proven to be an exceptional tool to explore fundamental and technological aspects of the interaction between mechanical and optical waves. Such interactions strongly benefit from cavities with large optomechanical coupling, high mechanical and optical quality factors, and mechanical frequencies larger than the optical mode linewidth, the so called resolved sideband limit. Here we demonstrate a novel optomechanical cavity based on a disk with a radial mechanical bandgap. This design confines light and mechanical waves through distinct physical mechanisms which allow…
Exceptional points are degeneracies in non-Hermitian systems. A two-state system with parity-time (PT) symmetry usually has only one exceptional point beyond which the eigenmodes are PT-symmetry broken. The so-called symmetry recovery, i.e., eigenmodes become PT-symmetric again, typically occurs in multi-state systems. Here we show that a two-state ferromagnetic waveguide system can have an exceptional point and a subsequent symmetry recovery due to the presence of accidental degeneracy points when the system is lossless. By introducing a parameter space where both exceptional points reside, w…
We demonstrate for the first time the occurrence of a sixth order exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) in a realistic multimode optical photonic structure by using a modified periodic coupled resonators optical waveguide (CROW), at the optical wavelength ${λ_e} = 1550 nm$. The 6th order EPD is obtained in a CROW without the need of loss or gain and such an EPD corresponds to a very special band edge of the periodic photonic structure where six eigenmode coalesce, so we refer to it as the 6th order degenerate band edge (6DBE). Moreover, we report a new scaling law of the quality factor Q of an…
We demonstrate the existence of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) of periodic eigenstates in non-Hermitian coupled chains of dipolar scatterers. Guided modes supported by these structures can exhibit an EPD in their dispersion diagram at which two or more Bloch eigenstates coalesce, in both their eigenvectors and eigenvalues. We show a second-order modal EPD associated with the parity-time ($\cal{PT}$) symmetry condition, at which each particle pair in the double chain exhibits balanced gain and loss. Furthermore, we also demonstrate a fourth-order EPD occurring at the band edge. Such deg…
We propose a class of spectral singularities that are sensitive to the direction of excitation and are arising in nonlinear systems with broken parity symmetry. These spectral singularities are sensitive to the direction of the incident beam and result in diverging transmission and reflection for the left (right) incident while the transmission and reflection of the right (left) side of the system remain finite. For pedagogical reason first, we review the scattering formalism in nonlinear systems using an abstract delta-function model. Then using a parity symmetry broken nonlinear system consi…
We engineer mechanical gain (loss) in system formed by two optomechanical cavities (OMCs), that are mechanically coupled. The gain (loss) is controlled by driving the resonator with laser that is blue (red) detuned. We predict analytically the existence of multiple exceptional points (EPs), a form of degeneracy where the eigenvalues of the system coalesce. At each EP, phase transition occurs, and the system switches from weak to strong coupling regimes and vice versa. In the weak coupling regime, the system locks on an intermediate frequency, resulting from coalescence at the EP. In strong cou…

We study state conversion in parity-time (PT) symmetry broken non-Hermitian two level system. We construct a theory and explain underlying mechanism for state conversion and define adiabatic evolutions in non-Hermitian systems. The adiabatic theorem can be used if initial state is an instantaneous eigenstate in Hermitian systems. We show that the system can adiabatically follow the modulationally stable instantaneous eigenstate sooner or later, regardless of initial state if the system parameters are varied slowly in non-Hermitian systems. We discuss the topological feature of dynamical circli…
We discuss the optical forces exerted on parity-time (PT) symmetric heterostructures under normal incidence of a single and two counter-propagating plane waves. The underlying strategy is through generalized parametric space, stemming from consideration of PT-symmetry condition and Lorentz reciprocity theorem. In such a generalized parametric space, we are able to not only exhaustively indicate various PT phases and extraordinary wave phenomena, but also deduce the directionality and magnitudes of optical forces. We find that when the system is illuminated by a normally incident wave, it can e…
Higher-order exceptional points (EPs), which appear as multifold degeneracies in the spectra of non-Hermitian systems, are garnering extensive attention in various multidisciplinary fields. However, constructing higher-order EPs still remains as a challenge due to the strict requirement of the system symmetries. Here we demonstrate that higher-order EPs can be judiciously fabricated in PT -symmetric staggered rhombic lattices by introducing not only on-site gain/loss but also nonHermitian couplings. Zero-energy flatbands persist and symmetry-protected third-order EPs (EP3) arise in these syste…
We investigate a parity-time (PT) symmetric system that consists of two symmetrically coupled asymmetric dimers. The enclosed magnetic flux controls the PT phase transition. The system can reenter the exact PT-symmetric phase from a broken PT-symmetric phase with large non-Hermiticity. Two-state coalescence may have one or two defective eigenstates. The topology of exceptional points is reflected by the magnetic flux independent phase rigidity scaling exponents. The topology changes when exceptional points coincide. The geometric phases accumulate when encircling the exceptional points and var…
