Rapid development of topological concepts in photonics unveils exotic phenomena such as unidirectional propagation of electromagnetic waves resilient to backscattering at sharp bends and disorder-immune localization of light at stable frequencies. Recently introduced higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) bring in additional degrees of control over light confinement and steering. However, designs of photonic HOTIs reported so far are solely exploiting lattice geometries which are hard to reconfigure thus limiting tunability. Here, we elaborate a conceptually new mechanism to engineer higher-order topological phases which relies on the dual nature of electromagnetic field and exploits both electric and magnetic responses of the meta-atoms. Hybridization between these responses gives rise to the difference in the effective coupling which is controlled by the meta-atoms mutual orientations. This feature facilitates us to tailor photonic band topology exclusively via particle alignment and to flexibly reconfigure the topological phase. Focusing on the kagome array of split-ring resonators, we experimentally demonstrate topological edge and corner states in the microwave domain. Our findings provide a new promising route to induce and control higher-order topological phases and states.
We consider phase separated states in magnetic oxides (MO) thin films. We show that these states have a non-zero electric polarization. Moreover, the polarization is intimately related to a spatial distribution of magnetization in the film. Polarized states with opposite polarization and opposite magnetic configuration are degenerate. An external electric field removes the degeneracy and allows to switch between the two states. So, one can control electric polarization and magnetic configuration of the phase separated MO thin film with the external electric field.
A composite multiferroic chain with an interfacial linear magneto-electric coupling is used to study the magnetic and electric responses to an external magnetic or electric field. The simulation uses continuous spin dynamics through the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations of the magnetic spin and the electric pseudo-spin. The results demonstrate an accurate description of the distribution of the magnetisation and polarisation are induced by applied electric and magnetic field, respectively.
We develop a theory of the magneto-optical and magneto-electric properties of a topological insulator thin film in the presence of a quantizing external magnetic field. We find that low-frequency magneto-optical properties depend only on the sum of top and bottom surface Dirac-cone filling factors $ν_{\mathrm{T}}$ and $ν_{\mathrm{B}}$, whereas the low-frequency magneto-electric response depends only on the difference. The Faraday rotation is quantized in integer multiples of the fine structure constant and the Kerr effect exhibits a $π/2$ rotation. Strongly enhanced cyclotron-resonance feature…
We show that the magneto-electric coupling in 3D (strong) topological insulators is related to a second derivative of the bulk magnetization. The formula we derive is the non-linear response analog of the Streda formula for Hall conductivity (P. Streda, J. Phys. C: Solid State Physics, 15, 22 (1982)), which relates the Hall conductivity to the derivative of the magnetization with respect to chemical potential. Our finding allows one to extract the magneto-electric coefficient by measuring the magnetization, while varying the chemical potential and one more perturbing field. Such an experimenta…
Magneto-elastic (or "straintronic") switching has emerged as an extremely energy-efficient mechanism for switching the magnetization of magnetostrictive nanomagnets in magnetic memory, logic and non-Boolean circuits. Here, we investigate the ultrafast magneto-dynamics associated with straintronic switching in a single quasi-elliptical magnetostrictive Co nanomagnet deposited on a piezoelectric PMN-PT substrate using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) measurements. The pulsed laser pump beam in the TR-MOKE plays a dual role: it causes precession of the nanomagnet's magnetizatio…
We show that bilayer graphene exhibits magneto-electric effects that are formally similar to those commonly seen in band insulators with broken inversion and time-reversal symmetries. Three unusual features characterize the magneto-electric responses exhibited by bilayer graphene: (i) unlike most other magneto-electric media, bilayer graphene is a conductor, (ii) bilayer graphene has a non-quantized magneto-electric coupling even though its electronic structure does not break parity and time-reversal symmetry, and (iii) the magnitude of the magneto-electric coupling in bilayer graphene is dete…
Zigzag graphene nanoribbons can have magnetic ground states with ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, or canted configurations, depending on carrier density. We show that an electric field directed across the ribbon alters the magnetic state, favoring antiferromagnetic configurations. This property can be used to prepare ribbons with a prescribed spin-orientation on a given edge.
We unravel the underlying near-field mechanism of the enhancement of the magneto-optical activity of bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet films (Bi:YIG) loaded with gold nanoparticles. The experimental results show that the embedded gold nanoparticles lead to a broadband enhancement of the magneto-optical activity with respect to the activity of the bare Bi:YIG films. Full vectorial near- and far-field simulations demonstrate that this broadband enhancement is the result of a magneto-optically enabled cross-talking of orthogonal localized plasmon resonances. Our results pave the way to the …
Magnetoelectric coupling between magnetic and electric dipoles is one of the cornerstones of modern physics towards developing the most energy-efficient magnetic data storage. Conventionally, magnetoelectric coupling is achieved in single-phase multiferroics or in magnetoelectric composite nanostructures consisting of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric/piezoelectric materials. Here, we demonstrate an electric-field-induced strain-mediated magnetoelectric effect in ultrathin CoFeB/MgO magnetic tunnel junction employing non-piezoelectric material, which is a vitally important structure for spintron…
Magneto-electric effect in a multiferroic heterostructure film, i.e. a coupled ferromagnetic-ferroelectric thin film, has been investigated through the use of the Metropolis algorithm in Monte Carlo simulations. A classical Heisenberg model describes the energy stored in the ferromagnetic film, and we use a pseudo-spin model with a transverse Ising Hamiltonian to characterise the energy of electric dipoles in the ferroelectric film. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the dynamic response of polarisation is driven by an external magnetic field, when there is a linear magneto-electric…
We demonstrate stable and reversible current induced switching of large-area ($> 100\;μm^2$) antiferromagnetic domains in NiO/Pt by performing concurrent transport and magneto-optical imaging measurements in an adapted Kerr microscope. By correlating the magnetic images of the antiferromagnetic domain changes and magneto-transport signal response in these current-induced switching experiments, we disentangle magnetic and non-magnetic contributions to the transport signal. Our table-top approach establishes a robust procedure to subtract the non-magnetic contributions in the transport signal an…
We propose an all-electric implementation of a precessionally switched perpendicular magnetic anisotropy magneto-tunneling-junction (p-MTJ) based toggle memory cell where data is written with voltage-controlled-magnetic-anisotropy (VCMA) without requiring an in-plane magnetic field. The soft layer of the MTJ is a two-phase (magnetostrictive/piezoelectric) multiferroic which is electrically stressed to produce an effective in-plane magnetic field around which the magnetization precesses to complete a flip when the VCMA voltage pulse duration and the stress duration are independently adjusted to…
The valleys in hexagonal two-dimensional systems with broken inversion symmetry carry an intrinsic orbital magnetic moment. Despite this, such systems possess zero net magnetization unless additional symmetries are broken, since the contributions from both valleys cancel. A nonzero net magnetization can be induced through applying both uniaxial strain to break the rotational symmetry of the lattice and an in-plane electric field to break time-reversal symmetry owing to the resulting current. This creates a magnetoelectric effect whose strength is characterized by a magnetoelectric susceptibili…
We theoretically investigate a new kind of nonlinear magnetoresistance on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs). At variance with the unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) effect in magnetic bilayers, this nonlinear magnetoresistance does not rely on a conducting ferromagnetic layer and scales linearly with both the applied electric and magnetic fields; for this reason, we name it bilinear magneto-electric resistance (BMER). We show that the sign and the magnitude of the BMER depends sensitively on the orientation of the current with respect to the magnetic field as we…
We study theoretically the role of quenched magnetic disorder at the surface of a topological insulator by numerical simulation and scaling analysis. It is found that all the surface states are localized while the transverse conductivity is quantized to be $\pm {{e^2} \over {2 h}}$ as long as the Fermi energy is within the bulk gap. This greatly facilitates the realization of the topological magnetoelectric effect proposed by Qi {\it et al.} (Phys. Rev. B\textbf{78}, 195424 (2008)) with the surface magnetization direction being controlled by the simultaneous application of magnetic and electri…
We study a Josephson junction made with a spin-textured bridge, when both Rashba and Zeeman interactions combine to generate a magneto-electric coupling between the superconducting current and the in-plane magnetic texture in the normal region. In particular, we unambiguously obtain the so-called anomalous current-phase relation $j=j_{c}\sinφ+j_{a}\cosφ$ in a two-dimensional ballistic Josephson junction close to the critical temperature of the heterostructure, when an anomalous current $j_{a}\neq0$ subsists even at zero phase-difference between the superconductors, and is responsible for the c…
We report observation of magneto-electric photocurrent generated via direct inter-band transitions in an InGaAs/InAlAs two-dimensional electron gas excited by a linearly polarized incident light. The electric current is proportional to the in-plane magnetic field which unbalances the velocities of the photoexcited carriers with opposite spins and consequently generates electric current from a spin photocurrent. The observed light polarization dependence of the electric current is explained microscopically by taking into account of the anisotropy of the photoexcited carrier density in wave vecto…
The magneto-optical spectra of ABC-stacked trilayer graphene are enriched by the electric field. A lot of prominent absorption peaks, which arise from the inter- Lnadau-level transitions, gradually change from the twin-peak structures into the double-peak ones with the increasing electric-field strength. This comes from the de- struction in mirror symmetry of xy-plane and the non-equivalence for two sublattices with the identical projections. Specially, a single threshold peak becomes a double- peak structure, owing to the Fermi-Dirac distribution. The absorption frequencies continuously grow …
Stimulated by recent studies of quantum phases with broken local inversion symmetry, we study the magnetoelectric effect in locally noncentrosymmetric metals. We consider three-dimensional (3D) coupled zigzag chains and demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic moment is induced by the electric current through a staggered antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. This current-induced magnetism is much larger than that in globally noncentrosymmetric metals. We provide an intuitive understanding of the current-induced antiferromagnetic moment by showing the inverse magnetoelectric effect, that is, the fer…
A large negative magnetoresistance is anticipated in topological semimetals in the parallel magnetic and electric field configuration as a consequence of the nontrivial topological properties. The negative magnetoresistance is believed to demonstrate the chiral anomaly, a long-sought high-energy physics effect, in solid-state systems. Recent experiments reveal that Cd3As2, a Dirac topological semimetal, has the record-high mobility and exhibits positive linear magnetoresistance in the orthogonal magnetic and electric field configuration. However, the negative magnetoresistance in the parallel …
We study coupling between the ferroelectric polarization and magnetization of granular ferromagnetic film using a phenomenological model of combined multiferroic system consisting of granular ferromagnetic film placed above the ferroelectric (FE) layer. The coupling is due to screening of Coulomb interaction in the granular film by the FE layer. Below the FE Curie temperature the magnetization has hysteresis as a function of electric field. Below the magnetic ordering temperature the polarization has hysteresis as a function of magnetic field. We study the magneto-electric coupling for weak an…
We present a detailed quantitative magneto-optical imaging study of several superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid structures, including Nb deposited on top of thermomagnetically patterned NdFeB, and permalloy/niobium with erasable and tailored magnetic landscapes imprinted in the permalloy layer. The magneto-optical imaging data is complemented with and compared to scanning Hall probe microscopy measurements. Comprehensive protocols have been developed for calibrating, testing, and converting Faraday rotation data to magnetic field maps. Applied to the acquired data, they reveal the comparatively …
We consider a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling placed in a perpendicular magnetic field and calculate the magnitude and direction of the electric-field-induced spin polarization. We find that in strong magnetic fields the polarization becomes an oscillatory function of the magnetic field and that the amplitude of these oscillations is parametrically larger than the polarization at zero magnetic field. We show that the enhanced amplitude of the polarization is a consequence of strong electron-hole asymmetry in a quantizing magnetic field.
While the application of out-of-plane magnetic fields was, so far, believed to be detrimental for the formation of Majorana phases in artificially engineered hybrid superconducting-semiconducting junctions, several recent theoretical studies have found it indeed useful in establishing such topological phases 1-5. Majorana phases emerge as quantized plateaus in the magnetoconductance of the hybrid junctions based on two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG) under fully out-of-plane magnetic fields. The large transverse Rashba spin-orbit interaction in 2DEG, together with a strong magneto-orbital ef…
