We theoretically study the magnon spin thermal transport using a strong coupling approach in pyrochlore iridate trilayer thin films grown along the [111] direction. As a result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), the spin configuration of the ground state is an all-in/all-out ordering on neighboring tetrahedra of the pyrochlore lattice. In such a state, the system has an inversion symmetry and a Nernst-type thermal spin current response is well defined. We calculate the temperature dependence of the magnon Nernst response with respect to the magnon band topology controlled by the spin-orbit coupling parameters and observe topologically protected chiral edge modes over a range of parameters. Our study complements prior work on the magnon thermal Hall effect in thin-film pyrochlore iridates and suggests that the [111] grown thin-film pyrochlore iridates are a promising candidate for thermal spin transport and spin caloritronic devices.
Pyrochlore oxides possessing "all-in-all-out" spin ordering have attracted burgeoning interest as a rich ground of emergent states. This ordering has two distinct types of magnetic domains (all-in-all-out or all-out-all-in) with broken time-reversal symmetry, and a non-trivial metallic surface state has been theoretically demonstrated to appear at their domain wall. Here, we report on observation of this metallic conduction at the single all-in-all-out/all-out-all-in magnetic domain wall formed at the heterointerface of two pyrochlore iridates. By utilizing different magnetoresponses of them w…
Using density functional theory and LDA+U method, we investigate magnetic and electronic structure of Y$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and rare-earth based pyrochlore iridates. Our study reveals that the ground state is a non-collinear magnetic insulating state. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling in Ir 5\textit{d}, there is an unusual correlation between the bands near Fermi level and the magnetization direction, resulting in a possibility of insulator-to-metal transition under applied magnetic field. This makes pyrochlore iridates a good candidate for possible magnetoressitance and magnetooptical applic…
While pyrochlore iridate thin films are theoretically predicted to possess a variety of emergent topological properties, experimental verification of these predictions can be obstructed by the challenge in thin film growth. Here we report on the pulsed laser deposition and characterization of thin films of a representative pyrochlore compound Bi2Ir2O7. The films were epitaxially grown on yttria-stabilized zirconia substrates and have lattice constants that are a few percent larger than that of the bulk single crystals. The film composition shows a strong dependence on the oxygen partial pressu…
We report the systematic study of structural, magnetic and electrical transport properties of $Y_{2-x}Bi_xIr_2O_7$ (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) pyrochlore iridates. The chemical doping enhances electrical conductivity and antiferromagnetic correlation substantially. The replacement of non-magnetic $Y^{3+}$ ion with non-magnetic $Bi^{3+}$ in $Y_2Ir_2O_7$ tends to reduce the octahedral distortion thus enhancing the antiferromagnetic correlation. Raman spectroscopy shows that the $Ir-O$ bond contract slightly and the $R-O'$ bond turn longer as disorder and phononic oscillation are reduced with $Bi$ d…
We study the finite temperature and magnetic field phase diagram of electrons on the pyrochlore lattice subject to a local repulsion as a model for the pyrochlore iridates. We provide the most general symmetry-allowed Hamiltonian, including next-nearest neighbour hopping, and relate it to a Slater-Koster based Hamiltonian for the iridates. It captures Lifshitz and/or thermal transitions between several phases such as metals, semimetals, topological insulators and Weyl semimetals, and gapped antiferromagnets with different orders. Our results on the charge conductivity, both DC and optical, Hal…
We report the low temperature properties of a new series of pyrochlore iridates R2Ir2O7 (R = rare-earth elements). We found that the compounds with R = Pr, Sm, Nd, and Eu exhibit metallic conductivity, whereas those with smaller rare-earth ions are nonmetallic. Such metal-nonmetal changeover is attributable to the importance of electron correlation among the Ir 5d electrons. Reflecting the geometrical frustration in the pyrochlore lattice, the rare-earth moments do not exhibit magnetic ordering to temperatures well below the antiferromagnetic Weiss temperature. We have not found any sign of su…
We point out the emergence of magnetism from the interplay of electron quasi-itinerancy and quantum order by disorder in pyrochlore iridates. Like other Mott insulating iridates, the Ir$^{4+}$ ion in pyrochlore iridates develops an effective ${J=1/2}$ moment from the on-site spin-orbit coupling. We consider the generic symmetry-allowed exchange between these local moments on a pyrochlore lattice and obtain the mean-field phase diagram. Assuming the superexchange is mediated by direct and/or indirect electron hopping via intermediate oxygens, we derive the exchange interactions in the strong co…
Pyrochlore iridates have attracted growing attention because of a theoretical prediction of a possible topological semimetal phase originating from all-in-all-out spin ordering. Related to the topological band structure, recent findings of the magnetic domain wall conduction have stimulated investigations of magnetic domain distribution in this system. Here, we investigate the size of magnetic domains in Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ single crystalline thin films by magnetoresistance (MR) using microscale Hall bars. Two distinct magnetic domains of the all-in-all-out spin structure are known to exhibit li…
We report the structural, magnetic and electrical transport properties of Y$_2$Ir$_{2-x}$Cr$_x$O$_7$ pyrochlore iridates. The chemical doping leads to order of magnitude enhancement of electrical conductivity. The introduction of Cr3+ at Ir4+ site tends to distort the Ir-O6 octahedra and suppresses antiferromagnetic correlation. The X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements suggest the coexistence of Ir4+ and Ir5+ valence states in the Y$_2$Ir$_{2-x}$Cr$_x$O$_7$ compounds. The concentration of Ir5+ is enhanced with Cr doping, leading to weak ferromagnetism and enhanced electrical conductiv…
Metal-insulator transitions in pyrochlore iridates (A2Ir2O7) are believed to occur due to subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, geometric frustration, and electron interactions. In particular, the nature of magnetic ordering of iridium ions in the insulating phase is crucial for understanding of several exotic phases recently proposed for these materials. We study the spectrum of magnetic excitations in the intermediate-coupling regime for the so-called all-in/all-out magnetic state in pyrochlore iridates with non-magnetic A-site ions (A=Eu,Y), which is found to be preferred in previous the…
A new class of materials termed topological insulators have been intensively investigated due to their unique Dirac surface state carrying dissipationless edge spin currents. Recently, it has been theoretically proposed that the three dimensional analogue of this type of band structure, the Weyl Semimetal phase, is materialized in pyrochlore oxides with strong spin-orbit coupling, accompanied by all-in-all-out spin ordering. Here, we report on the fabrication and magnetotransport of Eu2Ir2O7 single crystalline thin films. We reveal that one of the two degenerate all-in-all-out domain structure…
Pyrochlore iridates have recently attracted growing interest in condensed matter physics because of their potential for realizing new topological states. In order to achieve such quantum states, it is essential to understand themagnetic properties of these compounds, as their electronic structures are strongly coupled with theirmagnetic ground states. In this work, we report a systematic study of the magnetic properties of pyrochlore Y2Ir2O7 and its hole-doped compounds by performing magnetic, electron spin resonance, electrical transport, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement…
Neutron powder diffraction and inelastic measurements were performed examining the 5d pyrochlore Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Temperature dependent measurements were performed between 3.4 K and 290 K, spanning the magnetic transition at 155 K. No sign of any structural or disorder induced phase transition was observed over the entire temperature range. In addition, no sign of magnetic long-range order was observed to within the sensitivity of the instrumentation. These measurements do not rule out long range magnetic order, but the neutron powder diffraction structural refinements do put an upper bound f…
Topological phases have attracted much interest in recent years. While there are a number of three-dimensional materials exhibiting topological properties, there are relatively few two-dimensional examples aside from the well-known quantum Hall systems. Here we make materials-specific predictions for topological phases using density functional theory combined with Hartree-Fock theory that includes the full orbital structure of the relevant iridum $d$-orbitals and the strong but finite spin-orbit coupling strength. We find Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ bilayer and trilayer films grown along the [111] direct…
In the search for topological phases in correlated electron systems, iridium-based pyrochlores A2Ir2O7 -- materials with 5d transition-metal ions -- provide fertile grounds. Several novel topological states have been predicted but the actual realization of such states is believed to critically depend on the strength of local potentials arising from distortions of IrO6-cages. We test this hypothesis by measuring with resonant x-ray scattering the electronic level splittings in the A= Y, Eu systems, which we show to agree very well with ab initio electronic structure calculations. We find, howev…
Motivated by the recent experimental observation of anomalous magneto-transport properties near the Mott quantum critical point (QCP) of pyrochlore iridates, we study the generic topological band structure near QCP in the presence of magnetic field. We have found that the competition between different energy scales can generate various topological semi-metal phases near QCP. Here the central role is played by the presence of a quadratic band crossing (QBC) with four-fold degeneracy in the paramagnetic band structure. Due to the large band degeneracy and strong spin-orbit coupling, the degenera…
Two quintessential ingredients governing the topological invariant of a system are the dimensionality and the symmetry of the system. Due to the recent development of thin film and artificial superstructure growth technique, it is possible to control the dimensionality of the system, smoothly between the two-dimensions (2D) and three-dimensions (3D). In this work we unveil the dimensional crossover of emergent topological phenomena in correlated topological materials. In particular, by focusing on the thin film of pyrochlore iridate antiferromagnets grown along the [111] direction, we demonstr…
Nonequilibrium many-body dynamics is becoming one of the central topics of modern condensed matter physics. Floquet topological states were suggested to emerge in photodressed band structures in the presence of periodic laser driving. Here we propose a viable nonequilibrium route without requiring coherent Floquet states to reach the elusive magnetic Weyl semimetallic phase in pyrochlore iridates by ultrafast modification of the effective electron-electron interaction with short laser pulses. Combining \textit{ab initio} calculations for a time-dependent self-consistent reduced Hubbard $U$ con…
We report on the evolution of the thermal metal-insulator transition in polycrystalline samples of Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ upon hole-doping via substitution of Ca$^{2+}$ for Nd$^{3+}$. Ca substitution mediates a filling-controlled Mott-like transition with minimal resolvable structural changes and without altering site symmetry. Local structure confirms that Ca substitution does not result in local chemical phase separation, and absorption spectroscopy establishes that Ir cations maintain a spin-orbit entangled electronic configuration. The metal-insulator transition coincides with antiferromagnetic…
Eu2Ir2O7, a candidate Weyl semimetal, shows an insulator-to-metal transition as a function of Bi substitution at the Eu site. In this work, we investigate the (Eu_1-xBi_x)2Ir2O7 series via Hard X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (HAXPES), where substitution of larger Bi3+ for Eu3+ is reported to result in an anomalous lattice contraction (20 %) for low Bi doping (3.5 %). Using HAXPES, we confirm that all the cations retain their nominal valence state throughout the series. The asymmetric nature of Bi core-level spectra for compositions in the metallic region indicates that Bi contributes to the …
Optical conductivity of the metallic pyrochlore iridate Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$: Influence of spin-orbit coupling and electronic correlations on the electronic structure
Insulating magnetic rare-earth pyrochlores related to spin ice host emergent bosonic monopolar spinons, which obey a magnetic analogue of quantum electrodynamics and may open a route to a magnetic analogue of electronics. However, the energy scales of the interactions among rare-earth moments are so low as 1 K that the possible quantum coherence can only be achieved at a sub-Kelvin. Here, we desgin high-temperature quantum spin ice materials from first principles. It is shown that the A-site deintercalated spinel iridate Ir2O4, which has been experimentally grown as epitaxial thin films, is a …
We investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) effect of the pyrochlore oxide Nd2Ir2O7, which shows a metal-insulator transition at T_MI =33 K. A small positive MR effect was observed in the metallic state above T_MI, while a large negative MR effect was observed in the insulating state below T_MI . MR effects exceeding 3000% were found at 1 K at a field of 9 T. As a result, we confirmed the crossover from the insulating state to a state with a small or partial band gap in a field up to 56 T. Furthermore, from the MR effect in Eu2Ir2O7 (T_MI = 120 K) and Gd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (T_MI = 127 K), we reveal…
We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electronic structure of the three-dimensional pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7 through its magnetic metal-insulator transition. Our data reveal that metallic Nd2Ir2O7 has a quadratic band, touching the Fermi level at the Gamma point, similarly to that of Pr2Ir2O7. The Fermi node state is, therefore, a common feature of the metallic phase of the pyrochlore iridates. Upon cooling below the transition temperature, this compound exhibits a gap opening with an energy shift of quasiparticle peaks like a band gap insulator. The quasiparticle peaks ar…
We study the band structure topology and engineering from the interplay between local moments and itinerant electrons in the context of pyrochlore iridates. For the metallic iridate Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, the Ir $5d$ conduction electrons interact with the Pr $4f$ local moments via the $f$-$d$ exchange. While the Ir electrons form a Luttinger semimetal, the Pr moments can be tuned into an ordered spin ice with a finite ordering wavevector, dubbed "Melko-Hertog-Gingras" state, by varying Ir and O contents. We point out that the ordered spin ice of the Pr local moments generates an internal magnetic …
In situ growth of pyrochlore iridate thin films has been a long-standing challenge due to the low reactivity of Ir at low temperatures and the vaporization of volatile gas species such as IrO3(g) and IrO2(g) at high temperatures and high oxygen partial pressures. To address this challenge, we combine thermodynamic analysis of the Pr-Ir-O2 system with experimental results from the conventional physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique of co-sputtering. Our results indicate that only high growth temperatures yield films with crystallinity sufficient for utilizing and tailoring the desired topolo…
The frustrated pyrochlore iridate Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ was proposed as a metallic quantum spin liquid located at a zero-field quantum critical point. Here we present the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on the Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ single crystals to detect possible exotic excitations. In zero field, the thermal conductivity shows a dramatic suppression above a characteristic temperature $T_s \approx$ 0.12 K. With increasing field, $T_s$ increases and the thermal conductivity tends to saturate above $H$ = 5 T. The Wiedemann-Franz law is verified at high fields and inferred at ze…
Rare earth pyrochlore Iridates (RE2Ir2O7) consist of two interpenetrating cation sublattices, the RE with highly-frustrated magnetic moments, and the Iridium with extended conduction orbitals significantly mixed by spin-orbit interactions. The coexistence and coupling of these two sublattices create a landscape for discovery and manipulation of quantum phenomena such as the topological Hall effect, massless conduction bands, and quantum criticality. Thin films allow extended control of the material system via symmetry-lowering effects such as strain. While bulk Pr2Ir2O7 shows a spontaneous hys…
