Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a locally free sheaf of rank $r$ on a smooth projective surface $S$. The Quot scheme $\mathrm{Quot}^{l}_{S}(\mathcal{E})$ of length $l$ coherent sheaf quotients of $\mathcal{E}$ is a natural higher rank generalization of the Hilbert scheme of $l$ points of $S$. We study the virtual intersection theory of this scheme. If $C\subset S$ is a smooth canonical curve, we use cosection localization to show that the virtual fundamental class of $\mathrm{Quot}^{l}_{S}(\mathcal{E})$ is $(-1)^{l}$ times the fundamental class of the smooth subscheme $\mathrm{Quot}^{l}_{C}(\mathcal{E}\vert_{C})\subset\mathrm{Quot}^{l}_{S}(\mathcal{E})$. We then prove a structure theorem for virtual tautological integrals over $\mathrm{Quot}^{l}_{S}(\mathcal{E})$. From this we deduce, among other things, the equality of virtual Euler characteristics $χ^{\mathrm{vir}}(\mathrm{Quot}^{l}_{S}(\mathcal{E}))=χ^{\mathrm{vir}}(\mathrm{Quot}^{l}_{S}(\mathcal{O}^{\oplus r}))$.
Recently Oh-Thomas constructed a virtual cycle $[X]^{\mathrm{vir}}\in A_*(X)$ for a quasi-projective moduli space $X$ of stable sheaves or complexes over a Calabi-Yau 4-fold against which DT4 invariants may be defined as integrals of cohomology classes. In this paper, we prove that the virtual cycle localizes to the zero locus $X(σ)$ of an isotropic cosection $σ$ of the obstruction sheaf $Ob_X$ of $X$ and construct a localized virtual cycle $[X]^{\mathrm{vir}}_{\mathrm{loc}}\in A_*(X(σ))$. This is achieved by further localizing the Oh-Thomas class which localizes Edidin-Graham's square root Eu…
We compute tautological integrals over Quot schemes on curves and surfaces. After obtaining several explicit formulas over Quot schemes of dimension 0 quotients on curves (and finding a new symmetry), we apply the results to tautological integrals against the virtual fundamental classes of Quot schemes of dimension 0 and 1 quotients on surfaces (using also universality, torus localization, and cosection localization). The virtual Euler characteristics of Quot schemes of surfaces, a new theory parallel to the Vafa-Witten Euler characteristics of the moduli of bundles, is defined and studied. Co…
We consider the quot scheme $\mathrm{Quot}^d_{\mathcal F^r/ \mathbb P^1/ k}$ of locally free quotients of $\mathcal F^r:= \bigoplus ^{ r} \mathcal O_{\mathbb P^1 }$ with Hilbert polynomial $p(t)=d$. We prove that it is a smooth variety of dimension $dr$, locally isomorphic to $\mathbb A^{dr}$. We introduce a new notion of support for modules in $\mathrm{Quot}^d_{\mathcal F^r/ \mathbb P^1/ k}$, called Hilb-support that allows us to define a natural surjective morphism of schemes $ξ:\mathrm{Quot}^d_{\mathcal F^r/ \mathbb P^1/ k} \to \mathrm{Hilb}^d_{\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^1}} $ associating to eac…
In this note we prove that a conjectural formula for the class $λ_g \mathrm{DR}_g(a,-a)\in R^{2g}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,2})$ proposed recently by Buryak-Iglesias-Shadrin is true in the Gorenstein quotient of the ring $R^*(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,2})$. As a corollary we prove the strong $\mathrm{DR} \backslash \mathrm{DZ}$ equivalence conjecture for one-point correlators.

Let $C$ be a smooth curve over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$, and let $E$ be a locally free sheaf of rank $r$. We compute, for every $d>0$, the generating function of the motives $[\mathrm{Quot}_C(E,\boldsymbol{n} )] \in K_0(\mathrm{Var}_{\mathbf{k}})$, varying $\boldsymbol{n} = (0\leq n_1\leq\cdots\leq n_d)$, where $\mathrm{Quot}_C(E,\boldsymbol{n} )$ is the nested Quot scheme of points, parametrising $0$-dimensional subsequent quotients $E \twoheadrightarrow T_d \twoheadrightarrow \cdots \twoheadrightarrow T_1$ of fixed length $n_i = χ(T_i)$. The resulting series, obtained by ex…
To develop a constructive description of $\mathrm{Ext}$ in categories of coherent sheaves over certain schemes, we establish a binatural isomorphism between the $\mathrm{Ext}$-groups in Serre quotient categories $\mathcal{A}/\mathcal{C}$ and a direct limit of $\mathrm{Ext}$-groups in the ambient Abelian category $\mathcal{A}$. For $\mathrm{Ext}^1$ the isomorphism follows if the thick subcategory $\mathcal{C} \subset \mathcal{A}$ is localizing. For the higher extension groups we need further assumptions on $\mathcal{C}$. With these categories in mind we cannot assume $\mathcal{A}/\mathcal{C}$ t…
We prove that, given integers $m\geq 3$, $r\geq 1$ and $n\geq 0$, the moduli space of torsion free sheaves on $\mathbb P^m$ with Chern character $(r,0,\ldots,0,-n)$ that are trivial along a hyperplane $D \subset \mathbb P^m$ is isomorphic to the Quot scheme $\mathrm{Quot}_{\mathbb A^m}(\mathscr O^{\oplus r},n)$ of $0$-dimensional length $n$ quotients of the free sheaf $\mathscr O^{\oplus r}$ on $\mathbb A^m$.
Given a vector bundle $V$ over a curve $X$, we define and study a surjective rational map $\mathrm{Hilb}^d (\mathbb{P} V ) - \mathrm{Quot}^{0, d} ( V^* )$ generalising the natural map $\mathrm{Sym}^d X \to \mathrm{Quot}^{0, d} ({\mathcal O}_X)$. We then give a generalisation of the geometric Riemann--Roch theorem to vector bundles of higher rank over $X$. We use this to give a geometric description of the tangent cone to the Brill--Noether locus $B^r_{r, d}$ at a suitable bundle $E$ with $h^0 (E) = r+n$. This gives a generalisation of the Riemann--Kempf singularity theorem. As a corollary, we …
For a smooth projective variety $X$, we study analogs of Quot functors in hearts of non-standard $t$-structures of $D^b(\mathrm{Coh}(X))$. The technical framework is that of families of $t$-structures, as studied in arXiv:1902.08184. We provide several examples and suggest possible directions of further investigation, as we reinterpret moduli spaces of stable pairs, in the sense of Thaddeus (arXiv:alg-geom/9210007) and Huybrechts-Lehn (arXiv:alg-geom/9211001), as instances of Quot schemes.
Given a prime $\ell\geq 3$ and a positive integer $k \le \ell-2$, one can define a matrix $D_{k,\ell}$, the so-called Demjanenko matrix, whose rank is equal to the dimension of the Hodge group of the Jacobian ${\mathrm Jac}({\mathcal C}_{k,\ell})$ of a certain quotient of the Fermat curve of exponent $\ell$. For a fixed $\ell$, the existence of $k$ for which $D_{k,\ell}$ is singular (equivalently, for which the rank of the Hodge group of ${\mathrm Jac}({\mathcal C}_{k,\ell})$ is not maximal) has been extensively studied in the literature. We provide an asymptotic formula for the number of such…
We consider the analogue of Hurwitz curves, smooth projective curves $C$ of genus $g \ge 2$ that realize equality in the Hurwitz bound $|\mathrm{Aut}(C)| \le 84 (g - 1)$, to smooth compact quotients $S$ of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^2$. When $S$ is arithmetic, we show that $|\mathrm{Aut}(S)| \le 288 e(S)$, where $e(S)$ is the (topological) Euler characteristic, and in the case of equality show that $S$ is a regular cover of a particular Deligne--Mostow orbifold. We conjecture that this inequality holds independent of arithmeticity, and note that work of Xiao makes progress on this conjecture…
Let $S$ be a scheme and let $π: \mathcal{G} \to S$ be a $\mathbb{G}_{m,S}$-gerbe corresponding to a torsion class $[\mathcal{G}]$ in the cohomological Brauer group $\mathrm{Br}'(S)$ of $S$. We show that the cohomological Brauer group $\mathrm{Br}'(\mathcal{G})$ of $\mathcal{G}$ is isomorphic to the quotient of $\mathrm{Br}'(S)$ by the subgroup generated by the class $[\mathcal{G}]$. This is analogous to a theorem proved by Gabber for Brauer-Severi schemes.
In this paper we study Schlichting's K-theory groups of the Buchweitz-Orlov singularity category $\mathcal{D}^{sg}(X)$ of a quasi-projective algebraic scheme $X/k$ with applications to Algebraic K-theory. We prove that for isolated quotient singularities $\mathrm{K}_0(\mathcal{D}^{sg}(X))$ is finite torsion, and that $\mathrm{K}_1(\mathcal{D}^{sg}(X)) = 0$. One of the main applications is that algebraic varieties with isolated quotient singularities satisfy rational Poincare duality on the level of the Grothendieck group; this allows computing the Grothendieck group of such varieties in terms …
For a finite subgroup $Γ\subset {\mathrm{SL}}(2,\mathbb{C})$, we identify fine moduli spaces of certain cornered quiver algebras, defined in earlier work, with orbifold Quot schemes for the Kleinian orbifold $[\mathbb{C}^2/Γ]$. We also describe the reduced schemes underlying these Quot schemes as Nakajima quiver varieties for the framed McKay quiver of $Γ$, taken at specific non-generic stability parameters. These schemes are therefore irreducible, normal and admit symplectic resolutions. Our results generalise our previous work on the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ$; we present a…
This paper studies residual finiteness of lattices in the universal cover of $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$ and applications to the existence of smooth projective varieties with fundamental group a cocompact lattice in $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$ or a finite covering of it. First, we prove that certain lattices in the universal cover of $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$ are residually finite. To our knowledge, these are the first such examples. We then use residually finite central extensions of torsion-free lattices in $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$ to construct smooth projective surfaces that are not birationally equivalent to a smooth co…
