We propose seven criteria to single out physically reasonable non-singular black-hole models and adopt them to four different spherically symmetric models with a regular center and their rotating counterparts. In general relativity, all such non-singular black holes are non-generic with a certain matter field including a class of nonlinear electromagnetic fields. According to a criterion that the effective energy-momentum tensor should satisfy all the standard energy conditions in asymptotically flat regions, the well-known Bardeen and Hayward black holes are discarded. In contrast, the Dymnikova and Fan-Wang black holes respect the dominant energy condition everywhere. Although the rotating Fan-Wang black hole contains a curvature singularity, the rotating Dymnikova black hole is free from scalar polynomial curvature singularities and closed timelike curves. In addition, the dominant energy condition is respected on and outside the event horizons in the latter case. The absence of parallelly propagated curvature singularities remains an open question.
We study in detail the moduli space of solutions discovered in LLM relaxing the constraint that guarantees the absence of singularities. The solutions fall into three classes, non-singular, null-singular and time machines with a time-like naked singularity. We study the general features of these metrics and prove that there are actually just two generic classes of space-times - those with null singularities are in the same class as the non-singular metrics. AdS/CFT seems to provide a dual description only for the first of these two types of space-time in terms of a unitary CFT indicating the p…
For the AdS/CFT duality, considerations of plane wave metric which is obtained as Penrose limit of $AdS_5 \times S^5$ proved to be quite useful and interesting. In this work, we obtain Penrose limit metrics for Lifshitz, Schrodinger, hyperscaling violating Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating Schrodinger geometries. These geometries usually contain singularities for certain range of parameters and we discuss how these singularities appear in the Penrose limit metric. For some cases, there are non-singular metrics possible for certain parameter values and the metric can be extended beyond the co…
We briefly review the problem of generating cosmological flows of matter in GR (the genesis of universes), analyze models' shortcomings and their basic assumptions yet to be justified in physical cosmology. We propose a paradigm of cosmogenesis based on the class of spherically symmetric solutions with {\it integrable} singularity $r=0$. They allow for geodesically complete geometries of black/white holes, which may comprise space-time regions with properties of cosmological flows.
We analyze the asymptotic solutions of Chiral Gravity (Topologically Massive Gravity at μl = 1 with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions) focusing on non-Einstein metrics. A class of such solutions admits curvature singularities in the interior which are reflected as singularities or infinite bulk energy of the corresponding linear solutions. A non-linear solution is found exactly. The back-reaction induces a repulsion of geodesics and a shielding of the singularity by an event horizon but also introduces closed timelike curves.
A classical model for the extension of singular spacetime geometries across their singularities is presented. The regularization introduced by this model is based on the following observation. Among the geometries that satisfy Einstein's field equations there is a class of geometries, with certain singularities, where the components of the metric density and their partial derivatives remain finite in the limit where the singularity is approached. Here we exploit this regular behavior of the metric density and elevate its status to that of a fundamental variable -- from which the metric is cons…
We analyze the wave equation in families of pp-wave geometries developing strong localized scale-invariant singularities in certain limits. For both cases of well-localized pp-waves and the so-called null-cosmologies, we observe an intriguing discrete dependence of the existence of a singular limit on the normalization of the pp-wave profile. We also find restrictive matching conditions relating the geometries before and after the singularity (if a singular limit for the solutions of the wave equation with initial conditions specified away from the near-singular region is assumed to exist).
Admitting non-Riemannian geometries, Double Field Theory extends the notion of spacetime beyond the Riemannian paradigm. We identify a class of singular spacetimes known in General Relativity with regular non-Riemannian geometries. The former divergences merely correspond to coordinate singularities of the generalised metric for the latter. Computed in string frame, they feature an impenetrable non-Riemannian sphere outside of which geodesics are complete with no singular deviation. Approaching the non-Riemannian points, particles freeze and strings become (anti-)chiral.
We treat the problem of defining, and characterising in a practical way, an appropriate class of distinguished curves for Poincaré-Einstein manifolds, and other conformally singular geometries. These "generalised geodesics" agree with geodesics away from the conformal singularity set and are shown to satisfy natural "boundary conditions" at points where they meet or cross the metric singularity set. We also characterise when they coincide with conformal circles. In the case of (Poincaré-)Einstein manifolds, we are able to provide a very general theory of first integrals for these distinguished…

The black-hole information paradox provides one of the sharpest foci for the conflict between quantum mechanics and general relativity and has become the proving-ground of would-be theories of quantum gravity. String theory has made significant progress in resolving this paradox, and has led to the fuzzball and microstate geometry programs. The core principle of these programs is that horizons and singularities only arise if one tries to describe gravity using a theory that has too few degrees of freedom to resolve the physics. String theory has sufficiently many degrees of freedom and this na…
We study an alternative geometrical approach on the problem of classical cosmological singularity. It is based on a generalized function $f (x, y) = x^{2} + y^{2} = (1 - z)z^{n}$ which consists of a cusped coupled isosurface. Such a geometry is computed and discussed into the context of Friedmann singularity-free cosmology where a pre-big bang scenario is considered. Assuming that the mechanism of cusp formation is described by non-linear oscillations of a pre-big bang extended very high energy density field ($> 3 \times 10^{94} kg/m^{3} $), we show that the action under the gravitational fiel…
We construct the first family of microstate geometries of near-extremal black holes, by placing metastable supertubes inside certain scaling supersymmetric smooth microstate geometries. These fuzzballs differ from the classical black hole solution macroscopically at the horizon scale, and for certain probes the fluctuations between various fuzzballs will be visible as thermal noise far away from the horizon. We discuss whether these fuzzballs appear to infalling observers as fuzzballs of fuzz or as fuzzballs of fire. The existence of these solutions suggests that the singularity of non-extrema…

Penrose's singularity theorem implies that if a trapped region forms in a gravitational collapse, then a singularity must form as well within such region. However, it is widely expected that singularities should be generically avoided by quantum gravitational effects. Here we shall explore both the minimum requirements to avoid singularities in a gravitational collapse as well as discuss, without relying on a specific quantum gravity model, the possible regular spacetimes associated to such regularization of the spacetime fabric. In particular, we shall expose the intimate and quite subtle rel…
We investigate static and spherically symmetric solutions in a gravity theory that extends the standard Hilbert-Einstein action with a Lagrangian constructed from a three-form field $A_{αβγ}$, which is related to the field strength and a potential term. The field equations are derived from a variational principle and are obtained explicitly for a static and spherically symmetric geometry in vacuum. For the case of the vanishing three-form field potential the gravitational field equations can be solved exactly. However, for arbitrary potentials, due to their mathematical complexity, numerical a…
If one attempts to add momentum-carrying waves to a black string then the solution develops a singularity at the horizon; this is a manifestation of the 'no hair theorem' for black objects. However individual microstates of a black string do not have a horizon, and so the above theorem does not apply. We construct a perturbation that adds momentum to a family of microstates of the extremal D1-D5 string. This perturbation is analogous to the 'singleton' mode localized at the boundary of AdS; to leading order it is pure gauge in the AdS interior of the geometry.
The ``cosmic censorship conjecture'' asserts that all singularities arising from gravitational collapse are hidden within black holes. We investigate this conjecture in a setup of interest for tests of General Relativity: black hole solutions which are parametrically small deviations away from the Kerr solution. These solutions have an upper bound on rotation, beyond which a naked singularity is visible to outside observers. We study whether these (generic) spacetimes can be spun-up past extremality with point particles or accretion disks. Our results show that cosmic censorship is preserved f…
We construct the first family of horizonless supergravity solutions that have the same mass, charges and angular momenta as general supersymmetric rotating D1-D5-P black holes in five dimensions. This family includes solutions with arbitrarily small angular momenta, deep within the regime of quantum numbers and couplings for which a large classical black hole exists. These geometries are well-approximated by the black-hole solution, and in particular exhibit the same near-horizon throat. Deep in this throat, the black-hole singularity is resolved into a smooth cap. We also identify the hologra…
In this work we construct several black hole metrics which are consistent with the generalized uncertainty principle logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula. After preserving the event horizon at the usual position, a singularity at the Planck scale is found. Finally, these geometries are shown to be realized by certain model of nonlinear electrodynamics, which resembles previously studied regular black hole solutions.
An approach to computing, withing the framework of distribution theory, the distributional valued energy-momentum tensor for the Schwarzschild spacetime is disscused. This approach avoids the problems associated with the regularization of singularities in the curvature tensors and shares common features with the by now standard treatment of discontinuities in General Relativity. Finally, the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime is also considered using the same approach.
Due to quantum fluctuations, a black hole of mass $M$ represents an average over an ensemble of black hole geometries with angular momentum. This observation is apparently at odds with the fact that the curvature singularity inside a rotating black hole is timelike, while the one inside a non-rotating black hole is spacelike. Is the average of timelike singularities really spacelike? We use the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula to introduce a microcanonical ensemble for spin fluctuations and show that the onset of quantum gravity is always spacelike. We discuss the impact of this result on si…

We construct the first smooth bubbling geometries using the Weyl formalism. The solutions are obtained from Einstein theory coupled to a two-form gauge field in six dimensions with two compact directions. We classify the charged Weyl solutions in this framework. Smooth solutions consist of a chain of Kaluza-Klein bubbles that can be neutral or wrapped by electromagnetic fluxes, and are free of curvature and conical singularities. We discuss how such topological structures are prevented from gravitational collapse without struts. When embedded in type IIB, the class of solutions describes D1-D5…
The gravitational collapse of an infinite cylindrical thin shell of generic matter in an otherwise empty spacetime is considered. We show that geometries admitting two hypersurface orthogonal Killing vectors cannot contain trapped surfaces in the vacuum portion of spacetime causally available to geodesic timelike observers. At asymptotic future null infinity, however, congruences of outgoing radial null geodesics become marginally trapped, due to convergence induced by shear caused by the interaction of a transverse wave component with the geodesics. The matter shell itself is shown to be alwa…
Generalizing the Lie derivative of smooth tensor fields to distribution-valued tensors, we examine the Killing symmetries and the collineations of the curvature tensors of some distributional domain wall geometries. The chosen geometries are rigorously the distributional thin wall limit of self gravitating scalar field configurations representing thick domain walls and the permanence and/or the rising of symmetries in the limit process is studied. We show that, for all the thin wall spacetimes considered, the symmetries of the distributional curvature tensors turns out to be the Killing symmet…
The 1965 Penrose singularity theorem demonstrates the utterly inevitable and unavoidable formation of spacetime singularities under physically reasonable assumptions, and it remains one of the main results in our understanding of black holes. It is standard lore that quantum gravitational effects will always tame these singularities in black hole interiors. However, the Penrose's theorem provides no clue as to the possible (non-singular) geometries that may be realized in theories beyond general relativity as the result of singularity regularization. In this paper we analyze this problem in sp…
We examine the solution of the constraints in spherically symmetric general relativity when spacetime has a flat spatial hypersurface. We demonstrate explicitly that given one flat slice, a foliation by flat slices can be consistently evolved. We show that when the sources are finite these slices do not admit singularities and we provide an explicit bound on the maximum value assumed by the extrinsic curvature. If the dominant energy condition is satisfied, the projection of the extrinsic curvature orthogonal to the radial direction possesses a definite sign. We provide both necessary and suff…
