Excited states in 13O were investigated using inelastic scattering of an E/A=69.5-MeV 13O beam off of a 9Be target. The excited states were identified in the invariant-mass spectra of the decay products. Both single proton and sequential two-proton decays of the excited states were examined. For a number of the excited states, the protons were emitted with strong anisotropy where emissions transverse to the beam axis are favored. The measured proton-decay angular distributions were compared to predictions from distorted-wave born-approximation (DWBA) calculations of the spin alignment which was shown to be largely independent of the excitation mechanism. The deduced $^{13}$O level scheme is compared to ab initio no-core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) predictions. The lowest-energy excited states decay isotropically consistent with predictions of strong proton 1s1/2 structure. Above these states in the level scheme, we observed a number of higher-spin states not predicted within the model. Possibly these are associated with rotational bands built on deformed cluster configurations predicted by antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) calculations. The spin alignment mechanism is shown to be useful for making spin assignments and may have widespread use.
The spin and parity ($J^π$) assignments in even-even nuclei were reviewed across the nuclear chart using the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF). The prevalence of 2$^+_1$ first or lowest excited states is confirmed. The properties of 0$^+_2$, 1$^-_1$, and 3$^-_1$ lowest excited states were reexamined using the ENSDF data evaluation procedures. The $J^π$ systematic trends and correlations between level quantum numbers and nuclear physics phenomena are discussed.
Excited states in $^{14}$O have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally, these states were produced via neutron-knockout reactions with a fast $^{15}$O beam and the invariant-mass technique was employed to isolate the 1$p$ and 2$p$ decay channels and determine their branching ratios. The spectrum of excited states was also calculated with the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum that treats bound and scattering states in a unified model. By comparing energies, widths and decay branching patterns, spin and parity assignments for all experimentally observed level…
Background: Level structure of the most neutron deficient nucleon-bound carbon isotope, 9C, is not well known. Definitive spin-parity assignments are only available for two excited states. No positive parity states have been conclusively identified so far and the location of the sd-shell in A=9 T=3/2 isospin quadruplet is not known. Purpose: We have studied the level structure of exotic nucleus 9C at excitation energies below 6.4 MeV. Methods: Excited states in 9C were populated in 8B+p resonance elastic scattering and excitation functions were measured using active target approach. Results: T…
The excitation spectra in the deformed nucleus 232U have been studied by means of the (p,t) reaction, using the Q3D spectrograph facility at the Munich Tandem accelerator. The angular distributions of tritons were measured for 162 excitations seen in the triton spectra up to 3.25 MeV. 0+ assignments are made for 13 excited states by comparison of experimental angular distributions with the calculated ones using the CHUCK3 code. Assignments up to spin 6+ are made for other states. Sequences of states are selected which can be treated as rotational bands. Moments of inertia have been derived fro…
Neutron transfer reactions with fast secondary beams of $^{17}$Ne, $^{15}$O, and $^9$C have been studied with the HiRA and CAESAR arrays. Excited states of $^{18}$Ne, $^{16}$O, and $^{10}$C in the continuum have been identified using invariant-mass spectroscopy. The best experimental resolution of these states is achieved by selecting events where the decay fragments are emitted transverse to the beam direction. We have confirmed a number of spin assignments made in previous works for the negative-parity states of $^{18}$Ne. In addition we have found new higher-lying excited states in $^{16}$O…
Background: Discrepancies exist between the observed abundances of argon and calcium in oxygen-neon nova ejecta and those predicted by nova models. An improved characterization of the $^{38}$K($p, γ$)$^{39}$Ca reaction rate over the nova temperature regime ($\sim$ 0.1 -- 0.4 GK), and thus the nuclear structure of $^{39}$Ca above the proton threshold (5770.92(63) keV), is necessary to resolve these contradictions. Purpose: The present study was performed to search for low-spin proton resonances in the $^{38}$K $+$ $p$ system, and to improve the uncertainties in energies of the known astrophysic…
The even cadmium isotopes near the neutron midshell have long been considered good examples of vibrational nuclei. However, the vibrational nature of these nuclei has been questioned based on E2 transition rates that are not consistent with vibrational excitations. In the neighbouring odd-mass nuclei, the g factors of the low-excitation collective states have been shown to be more consistent with a deformed rotational core than a vibrational core. Beyond the comparison of vibrational versus rotational models, recent advances in computational power have made shell-model calculations feasible fo…
Study of the $^{11}$B($^{3}$He,d)$^{12}$C reaction at incident $^{3}$He energy E$_{lab}$ = 25 MeV has been performed at the K-130 cyclotron at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Differential cross sections have been measured for the 13.35 MeV state and for the states with excitation energy around 20 MeV. The data were analyzed with the DWBA method. A tentative assignment, 4$^{-}$, is given for the state at 13.35 MeV. For the state at 20.98 MeV, the spin-parity 3$^{-}$ and the isospin T = 0 are assigned for the first time. Our model description of the broad state at 21.6 MeV is consistent wi…
A high-precision branching ratio measurement for the superallowed Fermi $β^{+}$ emitter $^{62}$Ga was performed with the Gamma-Ray Infrastructure for Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei (GRIFFIN) spectrometer at the Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) radioactive ion beam facility at TRIUMF. The high efficiency of the GRIFFIN spectrometer allowed 63 $γ$-ray transitions, with intensities down to $\approx$1 part per million (ppm) per $^{62}$Ga $β^{+}$ decay, to be placed in the level scheme of the daughter nucleus $^{62}$Zn, establishing the superallowed $β$ branching ratio for $^{62}$Ga d…
Spectroscopy of doubly magic $^{132}_{50}$Sn$_{82}$ has been performed with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC following the $β$ decay of $^{132}_{49}$In$_{83}$. The analysis has allowed for the placement of a total of 70 transitions and 29 excited states in $^{132}$Sn. Detailed spectroscopy has also been performed on $^{131}$Sb, resulting from the $β$ decay of $^{131}$Sn, produced from the $β$-delayed neutron decay of $^{132}$In. Measurement of $γ$-rays in both $^{131}$Sn and $^{131}$Sb has led to the determination of the $β$-delayed neutron emission probability, $P_{n}$, from $^{132}$In…
A high-resolution $(p,t)$ experiment at $E_{p}$= 24 MeV was performed to populate low-spin states in the actinide nucleus ${}^{240}$Pu. The Q3D magnetic spectrograph of the Maier-Leibnitz Laboratory (MLL) in Munich (Germany) was used to identify the ejected tritons via $dE/E$ particle identification with its focal-plane detection system. Angular distributions were measured at nine different Q3D angles to assign spin and parity to the excited states based on a comparison with coupled-channels DWBA calculations. In total, 209 states have been excited in $^{240}$Pu up to an excitation energy of 3…
Background: The $^{136}$Ba isotope is the daughter nucleus in $^{136}$Xe $ββ$ decay. It also lies in a shape transitional region of the nuclear chart, making it a suitable candidate to test a variety of nuclear models. Purpose: To obtain spectroscopic information on states in $^{136}$Ba, which will allow a better understanding of its low-lying structure. These data may prove useful to constrain future $^{136}$Xe $\to$ $^{136}$Ba neutrinoless $ββ$ decay matrix element calculations. Methods: A $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}(p,t)$ reaction was used to populate states in $^{136}$Ba up to approximately 4.6 MeV…
Excited states in the $T_z=-1$ nucleus $^{70}$Kr have been populated using inelastic scattering of a radioactive $^{70}$Kr beam as well as one- and two-neutron removal reactions from $^{71,72}$Kr at intermediate beam energies. The level scheme of $^{70}$Kr was constructed from the observed $γ$-ray transitions and coincidences. Tentative spin and parity assignments were made based on comparison with the mirror nucleus $^{70}$Se. A second $2^+$ state and a candidate for the corresponding $4^+_2$ state suggest shape coexistence in $^{70}$Kr.
Background: In the "island of inversion", ground states of neutron-rich $sd$-shell nuclei exhibit strong admixtures of intruder configurations from the $fp$ shell. The nucleus $^{30}$Mg, located at the boundary of the island of inversion, serves as a cornerstone to track the structural evolution as one approaches this region. Purpose: Spin-parity assignments for excited states in $^{30}$Mg, especially negative-parity levels, have yet to be established. In the present work, the nuclear structure of $^{30}$Mg was investigated by in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy mainly focusing on firm spin-parity de…
